Clerks #3: "Leonardo is Caught in the Grip of an Outbreak of Randal's Imagination and Patrick Swayze Either Does or Doesn't Work in the New Pet Store" | ‎February 20, 2001 (DVD) | Unaired

Due to a misunderstanding involving a chimp at a nearby pet store and some rancid burritos that Randal is irresponsible about, the US government orders Leonardo be locked down. They believe an outbreak, similar to the one in the motion picture Outbreak has occurred. So it's up to Dante and Randal to advance the plot and eventually save the day. For some reason, it ends with Dante being browbeat into saying he's gay on the news.

It's funny to think about what qualified as edgy around this time. The show opens with a fourth-wall-break where Dante and Randal address the audience. They condescend to various women writing in (including a "Jennifer Schwalbach", shout out to Kevin's wife!!!) to complain that there are no women on the show. They do address the fact that there are no black people on the show and introduce Lando. Lando is seen throughout the episode in various fake-outs, where you think he might impact the plot or have a line but doesn't. It's funny, but man, it would not play the same way today.

This one features Gilbert Gotfried as Patrick Swayze, who seems to be working at the pet store but acts like he's studying for a role. Word has it they tried to get Swayze to portray himself and they were told by his people that he wouldn't do it and has no sense of humor about himself. And now he's dead!!! This is sorta evocative of James Woods on the Simpsons, working at the Apu Store. Hey speaking of Woods, he's in this. Like the gags about inclusion, he also plays differently today.

Lots of inspired jokes in this one. A gag involving Dustin Hoffman's likeness being portrayed by Al Pachino to avoid a lawsuit, the reveal that Alec Baldwin's Odd-Job-like assistant is secretly a robot, the gag about the mayor being stuck in a Mayor McCheese costume (and the police chief being Big Mac, delivering the memorable line "Nothing can kill the Grimace"), and the inside joke involving a photo of Leonardo Leonardo at Studio 54. This is apparently based on a real photo; the tall man is respected comedy writer Ian Maxtone-Graham who was a friend of Dave "Thanks for Watching!" Mandel. Dave ran across this photo in a book about Studio 54 of Ian Maxtone-Graham hanging out with Andy Warhol. I did a cursory google and I'm not sure if this photo is readily available online.

This one also ends with an educational segment where Jay & Silent Bob brutally wallop Charles Barkley for trying to host the segment himself. This whole thing is a shot-for-shot parody of a scene from The Godfather. There's also an eyebrow raising joke in this where the little girl seems to be discussing prostituting herself for 20 dollars. There was another gag like this in the last episode I didn't bother to highlight, where it's implied she wanted to film a porn movie with her little boy friend.

Askew connections: The pet store being named Gerbils Gerbils Gerbils is from Mallrats. The offscreen "kid in the helmet" would later appear in a deleted scene in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back.

The text comes just after Beth gives Tatiana lunch; a shark shaped miniature quesadilla, apple and cucumber slices, a glass of orange juice. It works out that the little girl has a nut allergy, as Beth cannot cope with peanut butter and claims to have a similar frailty. She brushes a kiss to her brow and offers her a smile as the little girl giggles. Beth is about to pour herself coffee when his specific ringtone catches her attention. She scoops up the device, and at first it's the image that gets her attention and for a split second, Beth thinks that maybe this is some kind of weird flirtation, a suggestive pose. But then the words hit her like a ton of bricks. Fear doesn't factor into the widening of her eyes; no, what she feels is a pure rush of rage that would shock even her aquatic kin. A hidden snarl shows her sharp teeth a little too clearly as she swipes out of the message, and to another name on her contacts list. {Text: Al Pachino} Jay- 911. Tatiana is here. Almost instantly, the reply comes: {Konachino} Anything for you babe. BRT. A few seconds later, there's a knock at the door before her hanai-sister comes walking into her house. The two women hug for an instant. They have been friends since Jay's freshman year, but they are family and a call is never ignored. Beth peels away, takes Tati's place and leads the little girl into the living-room, putting Matilda on for her before returning to the kitchen. That's when Jay gets debriefed about the situation, and knows exactly why Beth called. "Kid, you know I've always got your back." No questions truly asked. "Now do you want me to retrieve him, or babysit?" Beth flashes her a very particular smile. "Oh, I t'ink it time t' catch up on my own gardenin' yeah?" Jay nods. "But also...Tati is 'llergic t' all sorts of nuts, so dere's an epi-pen on da fridge, one in upstairs guest bat'room an' if all dat get used up...well. You know wha' f' do. I may be gonna few hours, but she can help ya pick out supper if it comes t' dat."

Christmas at the Candy Cane Confectionary has been bringing joy and delicacies to the community for over 50 years. When, Jerry (Eric Keenleyside, “Martha’s Vineyard Mysteries”), the owner, suddenly passes away, his granddaughter Clara (DeLoach) and her mother Bonnie (Sherry Miller, “The Virgin Suicides”) are faced with their first Christmas without him. Clara wishes for five more minutes with the grandfather who always helped her through tough times. Clara’s wish is answered in unexpected ways when a journal from her grandfather’s past turns up in the store and a young man named Jay (Alexander Jones, “The Christmas Doctor”) answers a help wanted post. Through her grandfather’s journal, Clara discovers his first great love from the past as she faces her feelings about her own first love in the present day with Logan (Haydn-Jones), while Bonnie may have the chance to love again.

Artist: Famous Dex Project: Read About It Rating: 2/10

I don’t know what this nigga was thinking dropping this tbh. I’m gonna let y'all know that I’m not a Dex fan at all, but after Pick It Up ft. A$AP Rocky, I was kinda interested in what he had stored up. Turns out my man’s just needed a laxative, cause he had straight BULLSHIT stored up. The intro track is like a family scrapbook of a bunch of Dex’s songs. It’s not technically a song, so I’m not gonna count it against the tape. Moving on, Up ft. Ski Mask and Random nigga #1 is underwhelming. I like Ski, but his verse felt lowkey lazy. Also, Dexter and Ski love themselves some ad-libs, so bringing them together felt like the track had about 8, people on it. The other dude, Reggie Mills sounded like an auto tuned messed. Idk why he was even on the track, his verse was garbage. Dex was trash too. The next track, Revenge, had a 🔥🔥🔥 ass beat, but Dex didn’t do it any justice. His flow was aight, but I didn’t feel HYPED. That’s pretty much the whole tape. Good beats with trash ass performances. A Must had a weak hook from Trippie Redd, who clearly saved all his good hooks for his own shit lmao Dex got stiffed. Spam had an annoying ass Rich the Kid feature, but Jay Critch did a pretty good job and Dex had a good flow. Made Up and Stop It are both boring as fuck. Like not even Dex wanted to make ‘em. Only If is the only song that is held back by the beat. The beat is mellow throughout the whole track, even though you expect a heavy drop somewhere. Dex and Pachino do an aight job, but they needed a better beat. Remember Days I Was Broke and Checking You Out showcases Dexter singing. Dexter should never sing. Hating Need To Stop anticipated this review lmao and he called me out proper. Made me feel like a real bitch for hating on him from my room while he stacks paper to the ceiling and rides around on 24in. chrome…….sike nah, this song trash too. Fuck this tape lmao 2/10
