Return to Rockvale Writers Colony
My desk I am at Rockvale Writers Colony again, working (as ever) on Medea on the Bayou.  I am in the Giles Hill room, which has a four poster bed with curtains, tasteful furnishings including a wonderful antique writing desk, and a huge bathroom and wardrobe. It has been a lovely quiet week, and I’ve gotten both writing and revising done.  Maybe not nearly as much as I would have liked (it always…

Best Books of 2023
I don’t know about anyone else, but I had a lot of trouble with concentration in 2023. This took me away from reading a lot. There was just so much going on in the world, both the world around me and the one that surrounds me, that I got lost in my own thoughts. The books that would pull me out of myself were the ones on this list. Normally, my Best Books list is a lot of fiction and perhaps one…

There Doesn't Seem To Be Any Great Rush For the Little Back Seat
July 21, 1907
All the Presidential hopefuls try to squeeze into the Presidency of the United States car's front seat; the Vice Presidency back seat is empty. The candidates include La Follette, Knox, Hughes, Taft, Cortelyou, Cannon, Shaw, Fairbanks, Bryan, and Johnson.
Several prominent members of both parties had shown interest in running for president in 1908.
See Also: John A. Johnson; William Jennings Bryan; William Howard Taft; Charles Evans Hughes; Joe Cannon

Never Changed
Another song-spo fic. Been feeling Knoxville heavy these past few days. Saw an edit by someone of tik tok of him during the Gumball Rally with this song…brain rot occurred.
WC 1.2K
Warnings: angst, flirting, semi-established on and off relationship, smoking, drinking, making out, groping etc. 18+
Song: Change (In the House of Flies) by the Deftones
I tried my best making the reader as body neutral as possible, still working on improving!
pabtsblueliving © 2023
You and Knox had been on and off for years.
It was cat and mouse for as long as you could remember.
You were a well known model, walking for Versace, Gucci, and Mugler since 2004. You somehow got roped into the Jackass crew when you had went to the first premier of the movie which was a backyard BBQ with celebrities left and right, playboy models and hustler girls walking around everywhere you looked.
Youd shown up with friends, Knoxville stealing you to say hi right after youd grabbed a drink.
“Big fan” He smiled, god that smile
“Likewise” you spoke, shaking his hand.
I watched you change, into a fly
I looked away, you were on fire.
It was breaking up and making up, every few months. Youd fuck, youd fight, youd see him in the tabloids with a new blonde the next day. Then after your declaration of finally being “done with him”...He’d show up backstage of your latest runway show.
I watched a change in you, It's like you never had wings
Now, you feel so alive, I've watched you change
Bam Margera had invited your best friend to come to the bar the Jackass Crew and himself were at in New York City. You knew he would be there, and you told yourself no…don't feel into his ego…don't show him, he still had you wrapped around his finger.
“Come on, Y/N, seriously…for me? You know ive been into Bam lately…And you know all those guys anyways! Who cares if Johnny will be there” Your friend, Melissa, had a big grin, batting her lashes at you.
You looked at her and let your head fall back as you sighed,
“Fine…Mel, alright I'll come. For. An. Hour” You pointed in her face, walking to your suitcase to pick out something to wear.
She landed a big kiss on your cheek, and you laughed.
“Y/N, holy shit I love you, I will totally owe you a drink at the bar!” She gleaned, running to put her shoes on.
You looked at yourself in the mirror, fluffing your hair. You'd thrown on your outfit Finishing the look with your harness motorcycle boots, and that one final…accessory.
His belt
God, you'd stolen that belt from him two years ago and he hasn't asked about it back since. The jewelry around your neckline and wrists clanged together as you reached for it.
It was black, some studs, and his old red Waylon Jennings belt buckle on it. You were wearing it, you had to. Mess with him a little, tease a little, maybe piss him off…who knows what wearing this belt would do to you.
I took you home, Set you on the glass
I pulled off your wings, Then I laughed
You and Melissa walked into the dive bar in Brooklyn. You had looked around, spotting Wee-man hand standing on the bar while also funneling a beer.
You and Melissa couldn't help but to groan while laughing, what the hell did we get ourselves into.
“Well, well, I knew you’d be here.” You hear a familiar, Pennsylvanian accent slur.
Melissa turned around, and smiled, giving him a hug. You still had no idea if he had said that to you, or his date who’d finally arrived.
Bam smiled and hugged Melissa, then looked up at you in their embrace, and spoke
“Yeah, I'm talking to you.” He laughed, and Melissa pulled away. “Good luck” He said, accent prominent, and pulling Melissa on his arm towards the other guys.
Melissa looked back and cringed, mouthing ‘Sorry’ as she continued to walk with Bam. A few minutes later, youre standing at the end of the bar, chin in your hand, waiting for your much needed gin and tonic.
“...So that’s where my belt has been, huh.” You heard that voice, his voice, shit, compose yourself a bit, dont turn around yet.
You kept yourself facing the bartender, feeling Johnny’s looming figure just inches behind you.
“Yeah, well…” You turned around, straw in your lips.
“I always thought it looked better on me, no?” You tossed your hair over your shoulder, taking another sip.
I watched a change in you, It's like you never had wings
Now, you feel so alive, I've watched you change
He looked down at you, and tilted his sunglasses down.
“I take it back…you look quite lovely tonight, Rabbit.” He said softly, taking off his sunglasses fully.
That nickname, he's playing a dangerous game, but he's playing it just right
“Starting already, Knox?” You couldn't help but to smile, you two were like magnets whenever you were five feet within the same space together.
“Whaaat, Y/N…you’re being mean tonight…are you breaking up with me?” He joked, smiling after his last few words.
“Don’t you wanna catch up?” His arms slapped against his thighs, grabbing his beer from the bar and taking a sip.
“What to hear about the next blonde youre seeing?” You rolled your eyes, “Dont think im too interested, Knox.
I look at the cross, then I look away
“Hey…come on now, that's over with…” He stepped closer, you're now trapped between him and the bar. “Come have a smoke with me…” He grinned, pulling a pack of cigarettes from his shirt pocket.
I'm in for it, and now I'm crossing a path that's near impossible to turn around on.
He lit your stick, then his. You had your back against the brick wall, him leaning on the wall on his side, on arm holding him up above his head.
You both took a drag, making eye contact, not breaking with the other. He exhaled his smoke, stepping closer, his hand with the cigarette stroking the side of your face, thumb going over your lip.
“I always forget how gorgeous you are, rabbit…” he pulled up your chin as you took another drag
“How do we,” You exhaled the smoke, “always end up like this, huh, John?”
Your mind was fuzzy, you had a buzz, desire.
“Maybe this is just…meant to be.” He took your cigarette and put it out, grabbing your waist and pulling you in for a smoldering kiss.
You gasped, usually you're able to fend him off for at least another hour. But, the inevitable is going to happen.
You pulled him in by his belt buckle, whining into the kiss. The feeling of his tongue shooting straight to your core. He tasted like beer and cigarettes, your favorite.
Give you the gun Blow me away
I watched a change in you It's like you never had wings
His right hand sneaked down, and grabbed a handful of your ass slowly, and he groaned. You took this opportunity to stick your tongue between his lips and grab a handful of his hair.
“PJ” You whined…taking a breath
“Baby, come on, baby, if you call me that you know this will be a long night…” He grabbed you by the chin.
You held his belt buckle, teasing the trail of hair leading down under his dickies.
“So let be long, Knox…” You smiled.

Okay I read the Grandest Game.....
Spoiler warning
So I got the epub.
It was in one word... intense. So much going on so much tension yet it feels like nothing had happened and we only got the introduction.
LOVED
The OG characters, this book made me love them more. Like- Nash, Xander and Avery.
NASH n'Libby had BabieS ? Jaw drop movement.
The Game was truly grand. JLB fed us exactly what we wanted.
Esp, when the symbols unveiled and the infinity to eight movement (so many callbacks)
Tho I knew that Gray is a player, literal GoOseBumpS.
The callbacks, and how everything Jen posted- the cards, the sneak peaks and the book cover; they all just pieced together. It was lovely.
I am happy that Grayson is ready this time, he isn't that tortured person anymore, he is healing and admitting to his faults and flaws.
Lyra's POV was my fave
Rohan's grew on me a little late but it still did.
DID NOT LIKE
It got a little confusing at times I loved Gigi's chapter and by that I mean Gigi. But the Knox-Brady thing was a bit too much for me.
Idk if anyone will share this opinion, but
GRAY AND LYRA FELT RUSHED, IF ONLY A LITTLE BIT.
Like three phone calls and 12 hours together could just do it. This is Grayson, he had said he doesn't fall at first sight. The way Odette talked, 'twas like they were meant to be but how does she get to say that?
Lyra's POV was centred around the game and her trauma and she was really great but how fast she fell for Gray was a bit off putting for me. I felt a slow burn would have worked great. But in the end it's JLB's book and I'll still eat up her work.
The Cliffhangers,
Gigi being more involved with Eve and Slate, I predicted that. (Elated)
Sav- we knew that deep in our hearts didn't we?
Rohan, half a point to my prediction?
Odette Mora- Idk what to tell, admittingly, I do not quite understand whatheheck happened. Maybe more to be told in Games untold.

February 21st 2002 saw the all-Scots curling team won gold at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, watched by over 5 million TV viewers in the wee small hours of the morning.
In a thrilling finish the team of Rhona Martin, backed by Fiona MacDonald, Margaret Morton, Janice Rankin and Debbie Knox, needed nerves of steel to knock out a Swiss counting stone at the climax of the final, but the skip, Rhona managed to pull it off.
Her own stone then finished up close to the centre of the rink and that was enough to seal a 4-3 triumph.
Martin had earlier fired the team into a narrow 2-1 lead at the close of the fifth end with a double after successfully taking out a Swiss counting stone.
A mistake by the Swiss during end seven increased that advantage to 3-1 before they struck back to tie the scores with singles in ends eight and nine.
And we did it all again in 2022 at the Beijing,Winter Olympics, with a dominant performance against Japan in the final. Eve Muirhead's team led from the first end of the gold medal match, and continued that form throughout to win by a score of 10-3 and top the podium.
Skip Muirhead, who won bronze in 2014, expertly controlled affairs throughout and finally has a gold medal at her fourth Olympics after returning from hip surgery.
Teammates Vicky Wright, Jen Dodds, and Hailey Duff are champions at their first attempt.
“It’s a dream come true,” Muirhead, who shed a tear on the medal podium said “That was my third semi-final, and the two I lost were hard but I bounced back and here we are. We are Olympic champions. It’s such a special moment.”

the really funny part about this being primarily a manga blog is that like. I do in fact read comics Other Than Witch Hat I just became deeply obsessed with witch hat two years ago and haven’t returned to normal since.
ANYWAYS everyone should read Tiger tiger by Petra nordlund and on a sunbeam by Tillie Walden and Namesake by isameg and Nimona by Stevenson and vainglorious by kellysketches and Saint For Rent by Ru Xu and Strong Female Protagonist by Molly Knox Ostertag and Brennan Lee Mulligan.
ALSO. Sparrowhawk by Delilah s Dawson. incredible but it has faeries and I’m biased. Fence (CS Pacat and Joannathemad) is fun but the novelizations are not. The Prince and The Dressmaker (Jen Wang) is very sweet. Estranged (Ethan M Aldridge) is great, but again, faerie bias and I can’t resist changelings. I am CONSTANTLY recommending Taproot (Keezy Young) to people. It’s FUN it’s CUTE its got NECROMANCY. there’s Plants. More people should read it.

@softmalldrifting Jack had been invited to a ball for reasons that were still unclear. “It’s a Sentinel thing,” Knox had explained. “Some bullshit about us getting dressed up and showing off.” Jack had simply accepted the invitation and had invited Jen as his plus one.
He had thrown on a white button down, black slacks and coat. He’d put a black tie on because he’d forgotten to ask Jen what color her dress was. He sat down in the lobby of the hotel, waiting for her to get there before he went inside.

BIOGRAPHY --

Freya was nothing short of a surprise. Her parents, Diane and Paul, already had their hands full with Finn and Fletcher Knox. Having three under three was not going to be easy but Freya was here anyways.  She grew up on the shores of St. Pete Beach, spending her days running in the sand and jumping the waves. She'd flock after her brothers, organize her mother's store on the beach, and settle in her father's office as he taught classes. She'd remark that her childhood was pretty good. Her father loved her mother much like a romance movie. Kisses in the morning, flowers on his way home from work, dancing in the kitchen when they thought the kids went to bed. She compared them to a fairytale all the time. They taught Freya all she needed to know about love.
13 going on 30 (2004), dir. gary winick .•°☆.⋆。⋆☆•˚。⋆。˚•☆˚。⋆.☆•°.⋆
When Freya turned thirteen, her mother passed away in a car accident. It was quick, or at least that's what the police told her father when they showed up to their condo. It'd been raining, it was spring break, it was a red light. The words bled together, and the fabric that was there little family was ripped apart. She didn't remember what it was like to be completely honest. Her peaceful condo on the beach that she'd retreated to became dull, lifeless. Her father searched for his wife in every woman in town, Fletcher threw himself into his studies, and Finn threw himself into buying baggies on street corners. Freya threw herself into trying to keep her family together.
Her father paraded his girlfriends around their condo, but there was nothing like watching him smile at someone and realizing it was half the smile he used to give your mother. Freya called it the sort of heartbreak that the movies couldn't even begin to describe.
When she turned sixteen, her father met Johannah. She gave Freya her first job, and her first taste of the wedding planning industry. She was just as associate, helping Johannah out at the various wedding, and she fell in love with it. The love in the air, feeling the warmth and comfort, watching two people smile at eachother like they were the only two in the room. It reignited the idea that loved lived in every corner of the world, and she saw the sort of love her parents had when she looked hard enough.
.•°☆.⋆。⋆☆•˚。⋆。˚•☆˚。⋆.☆•°.⋆ 27 dresses (2008), dir. anne fletcher
When Freya was seventeen, Finn checked himself into rehab and Fletcher decided that his destiny led him outside of Florida. Johannah left shortly her father and Freya stayed behind to care for her dad. She worked her way up through Johannah's wedding planning business, eventually taking on the task of planning her own weddings and going to school nearby to get her degree in business. Finn bounced back and forth between rehab and home, and her father kept searching for his wife in flings.
She graduated from college, and continued to work for Johannah. She'd become a close confidant for Freya and was the first person to encourage Freya to leave, and find something new. Her mother would want that for her, Jo had pointed out. Jo had a friend in New York City who offered to hire Freya. And, well, Freya didn't want to be stuck in St. Petersburg forever so she told her father and her brothers when Fletcher was home for Christmas, and tried to ignore how fake her father's smile was at her.
Finn joked that the glue was moving. Freya wanted to be sick. Freya packed up her boxes, her cat Toad, and moved to New York City with promises to call often and to have her family visit her. all the best movies start this way, right?

Books I Read In 2023, Part One
In January I decided I wanted to track my reading, as I usually don't really have a sense of how much I read per month or year. I don't like things like Goodreads, so I just jotted down the books I read and what I thought of them in my notes app. Now that we're halfway through the year, I thought I might share what I've read, and then in December I can add part 2. So, without further ado,
January
The Girl From The Sea by Molly Knox Ostertag. 3 stars, a bit slow but generally sweet and fun.
Jackalope Wives And Other Stories by T Kingfisher. 5 stars, every story slapped. would highly recommend if you like dark fairytales with a sense of humour.
February
started Helen Of Troy by Margaret George. I still haven't finished it (she is LONG) but i'm really enjoying it!
I Was Born For This by Alice Oseman. 4.5 stars, it was entertaining and emotional like all of Alice Oseman's books but i have to deduct a half a star for the main character (who is from the south) briefly assuming with no basis that being from north = transphobic and the narrative treating this as a rational assumption and not super bigoted and classist, like what the hell was that about? also via this interaction Alice Oseman managed to find yet another way to mention Durham in her books but this time i couldn't even go "yay i'm from there!" because now have this sense that she thinks i'm predisposed to transphobia because of where i'm from. i cannot stress this enough: what the fuck.
The Prince And The Dressmaker by Jen Wang. 5 stars, so heartwarming and i loved the art! I'm trying to get one of my friends to read it because I just know he'll relate.
March
The Lives Of The Saints by Leigh Bardugo. 3 stars, not really my jam but it adds another layer to her other books, which I really enjoy.
Fun Home by Alison Bechdel. 3 stars, made my head hurt at times because it's kinda convoluted, but still super interesting. the musical is great too. and before you mention it, yes, i am reading Dykes To Watch Out For, but it's not on the list because I just started it, and I will probably read the bulk of it and finish it in July so it will fall under there.
April
Lies We Sing To The Sea by Sarah Underwood. 3.5 stars, i'll be honest, i read this out of morbid curiosity and spite. it was a pretty average for a YA book really, not worth all the drama it stirred up in the classics community, but the end surprised me so it gets an extra half star.
A Fatal Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum: Murder In Ancient Rome by Emma Southon. 4 stars, really interesting and quite funny at times but i just don't really like the author's vibe. she's weirdly defensive of Caligula, just as she was in her book on Agrippina that i read last year. like yeah people make fun of him and exaggerate stories about him but he literally killed people, maybe he deserves it.
May
Messalina: A Story Of Empire, Slander And Adultery by Honor Cargill-Martin. 5 stars, super interesting and engaging, i never wanted to put it down! Messalina really did just girlboss too close to the sun.
I travelled this month so didn't have time for any other books, but I bought my own weight in them and will try to work through them.

Rain Hare by Anna Barker. 4 stars, a collection of short stories so a mixed bag. I really liked most of them, some even made me cry (to be precise, How Do I Feel About Lentils?, which does an excellent job of blending past and present to help the reader get into the confused mind of the narrator, who has Alzheimer's, and Tunny, wherein the twist hit me like a sack of bricks and all I could do was break down) but there was just one i didn't really like (Sea Glass, i just don't really vibe with the mentally ill narrator dying at the end and this being presented as what she wanted.)
Through The Woods by Emily Carroll. 3.5 stars, good horror, the art was great and the stories interesting, but they all felt like they ended just a bit too soon and therefore lost some of their impact.
Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield. 6 stars, yes, i'm straight up giving this 6 out of 5 stars because it was so so good! i devoured it in one day flat and loved it. the horror was atmospheric and gripping, the romance made my chest ache, and the ending absolutely devastated me, but in a good way.
so yeah, hopefully i can continue to get through my massive TBR pile in the coming months! and if you've read any of these books, please let me know what you think, I would love to talk about them!!
