The first pic is of Blair McNaughton taking part in a curling 'Grand Match' of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club on Loch Leven, Kinross, 28th January 1959.
Also called The Bonspiel a Grand Match is the Mecca for all curlers who truly love the game and it's traditions. It is a contest between the curlers in the North of Scotland matched against their counterparts in the South, and is held out-doors when there is sufficient frost to give ice of adequate thickness and quality at the chosen venue. It has been described as the biggest team game in the world. Last held in 1979, it was played by 1200 curlers each side !
Pics are of curling through the ages
There's a wee clip of the 1959 Bonspiel at the link below.

"The Fastest Vehicles on Earth": Hudson River Ice Yachts
"The Fastest Vehicles on Earth": Hudson River Ice Yachts
Join Robert Wills of the Hudson River Ice Yacht Preservation Trust as he discusses the little-known history of ice yachting on the Hudson River -- from a utilitarian 17th century Dutch tradition, to the Hudson Valley Roosevelts and the storied races of the late 1800s, to the present day. Three historic ice yachts, once "the fastest vehicles on earth," were displayed in the Wallace Center at the FDR Presidential Library and Home in 2023/24.

A time honored tradition at the end of ski season at Blue Knob All Seasons Resort in Claysburg, PA is … weather permitting … pond skimming! At the base of a steep slope a broad shallow hole is dug, lined with a plastic liner, and filled with water creating a chilly lake. Then, after skiing or snow boarding down the slope the bravest among us hope our speed or athletic prowess will carry us across the water to the other side of the lake. Hence the term "Pond Skimming." In addition to the dangers of a chilly dunk, as you can see the skier or boarder may have to dodge a snow ball or two. Note the boarder's helmet cam … I bet his movie was awesome! At my webpage:

I’ve compiled a list of mid and long distance races - mostly those used to qualify for Iditarod and the Quest with a few extras - for the 2023 race season. If you have a race you think needs to be listed, send it my way! I’m always willing to add more.

February 21st 2002 saw the all-Scots curling team won gold at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, watched by over 5 million TV viewers in the wee small hours of the morning.
In a thrilling finish the team of Rhona Martin, backed by Fiona MacDonald, Margaret Morton, Janice Rankin and Debbie Knox, needed nerves of steel to knock out a Swiss counting stone at the climax of the final, but the skip, Rhona managed to pull it off.
Her own stone then finished up close to the centre of the rink and that was enough to seal a 4-3 triumph.
Martin had earlier fired the team into a narrow 2-1 lead at the close of the fifth end with a double after successfully taking out a Swiss counting stone.
A mistake by the Swiss during end seven increased that advantage to 3-1 before they struck back to tie the scores with singles in ends eight and nine.
And we did it all again in 2022 at the Beijing,Winter Olympics, with a dominant performance against Japan in the final. Eve Muirhead's team led from the first end of the gold medal match, and continued that form throughout to win by a score of 10-3 and top the podium.
Skip Muirhead, who won bronze in 2014, expertly controlled affairs throughout and finally has a gold medal at her fourth Olympics after returning from hip surgery.
Teammates Vicky Wright, Jen Dodds, and Hailey Duff are champions at their first attempt.
“It’s a dream come true,” Muirhead, who shed a tear on the medal podium said “That was my third semi-final, and the two I lost were hard but I bounced back and here we are. We are Olympic champions. It’s such a special moment.”

Exploring Backcountry Snowboarding: Thrills and Precautions
Tumblr media
When it comes to snowboarding, hitting the slopes at a resort can be a thrilling experience. But for those seeking a more adventurous and uncharted path, backcountry snowboarding offers a unique and exhilarating experience. However, venturing into the backcountry also comes with its own set of challenges and risks. In this article, we'll explore the thrills and precautions associated with backcountry snowboarding, making it accessible to a broader audience.
Thrills of Backcountry Snowboarding
Untouched Terrain: Backcountry snowboarding takes you away from the groomed runs of ski resorts into untouched, pristine snow. This means you get to carve your own lines through nature's canvas.
Serenity and Solitude: If you're seeking solitude and a deeper connection with nature, backcountry snowboarding can be a spiritual experience. The quietude of the wilderness combined with the snow beneath your board is a unique sensation.
Challenge and Adventure: Backcountry terrain is often more challenging than resort slopes. It demands advanced riding skills and offers the chance to conquer steep lines, deep powder, and natural features like cliffs and trees.
No Lift Lines: Say goodbye to lift lines and crowded slopes. In the backcountry, it's just you, your friends, and the mountains. You can set your own pace and take in the breathtaking scenery without interruption.
Precautions for Safe Backcountry Snowboarding
Avalanche Safety: Perhaps the most critical aspect of backcountry snowboarding is understanding and mitigating the risk of avalanches. Take avalanche safety courses, carry essential equipment like beacons, shovels, and probes, and learn how to read avalanche forecasts and terrain.
Terrain Knowledge: Knowing the terrain is crucial. Maps, GPS, and local knowledge can help you avoid hazards and navigate safely. Study topography and plan your routes in advance.
Weather Awareness: Weather conditions can change rapidly in the backcountry. Keep an eye on forecasts, and be prepared for sudden shifts in temperature, visibility, or snowfall. Dress in layers to stay warm and dry.
Group Dynamics: Riding with a group is recommended for safety. Ensure everyone in your group is on the same page regarding route choices, emergency procedures, and communication.
Fitness and Preparedness: Backcountry snowboarding can be physically demanding. Stay in good shape and carry essential supplies like food, water, and a first-aid kit. Always let someone know your plans and expected return time.
Respect Nature: Leave no trace. Respect the environment, wildlife, and other backcountry enthusiasts. Pack out all your trash and adhere to ethical guidelines for sustainable outdoor recreation.
Backcountry snowboarding is an incredible way to experience the beauty and thrill of nature in its raw form. However, it's essential to approach it with the right knowledge, gear, and mindset to ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure. By taking precautions and staying informed, you can carve unforgettable memories while riding the untouched slopes of the backcountry.
