SHSL Taiko Expert: (girl) 丸太多希 Maruta Taki; this one phonetically comes out to "round drumming", with the surname meaning "log" and the kanji for the first name meaning "many hopes"

SHSL Roomba Hacker: (boy) 土井尻清作 Doijiri Seisaku; for the last name I wanted something with "ijiri" in it to indicate fiddling with machines, and I think that "earth well butt" conveys a sense of what needs to be cleaned, while the first name, which phonetically evokes creating things, uses kanji meaning "purification making"

SHSL Barista: (nonbinary) 美濃淹 Mino Ireru; this is the only one where I deviate from a real name you could legally have in Japan--the last name is a real one, which means "beautiful and dark" (濃い is usually used to mean food or drink that is dark in color and/or rich in flavor), whereas the first name is the word meaning "to brew" but just as its initial kanji character

OK...I think I'll stick with both pairings from Open Heart 🤭 (Apologize in advance; this got long... thanks to the 1 person who may read this! lol)

Tobias / Casey-land

Casey: In general, she tries to be friendly, and she has the ability to tell someone to fuck off and make them walk away smiling after she has, so most people tend to like her. But everyone has their enemies out there don't we know that shit here on Tumblr... 🍵 and Casey's no exception.

The first one that comes to mind is Landry - he detests that she went on to be so successful and that she is held in such high esteem by his idol, Ethan. Then, he goes to Kenmore and tries sucking up to Tobias, and ho and behold, Casey ends up being the love of his life. While I don't HC the same level of bitterness between Landry/MC that others do, and I imagine that if he sees her, he tries to be polite and professional (and she does the same). But deep down, he loathes her. His entitlement can't let him past the fact that he feels she is where he deserves to be.

For a brief period of time, Tobias's brother Jordan (M!OC) doesn't like her. He was a little concerned that Casey was a gold digger, but that was just some projection on his part, and they did makeup pretty quickly when he realized he was being a putz.

Her ex-girlfriend Jess's wife (still working on her name!) wasn't very fond of her initially. It was based on envy and differing personalities. Casey & Jess's split was situational, not necessarily anything either woman wanted, and they remained good friends for life. So initially, she felt a bit threatened by her. After realizing that wasn't anything to worry about, she warmed to Casey a little. But where Casey tends to be light-hearted and fun, Jess's Mrs. is a bit more professional and off-standish. She tolerates Casey but often has an "I don't see what you ever saw in her" attitude. Fortunately, they don't see each other much lol .

Lastly... a whole lot of Tobias's former conquests dislike her... it's the "What does she have that I didn't have" attitude (babes, the list is long lol). But these people are inconsequential in their lives.

Tobias: Well, when he came into Casey's life, Ethan would be the top contender. The two of them had their shared history/rivalry, and after their falling out, Ethan was decidedly not a fan. When Tobias started dating Casey after Casey broke up with Ethan yeah, Dr. Ramsey was not pleased. But after the chemical attack, they were able to bridge their differences and end up becoming good friends again.

Several of his relatives on his late father's side of the family. Tobias's Dad died when he was in Med School, and while not fully estranged, they were not on the best of terms when he died (something Tobias struggles with for the rest of his life.) To hear this group of relatives talk, that is the reason, but that's bullshit. For what it's worth, these are the family members his father didn't get on well with either. Truth is, they tend to be racist and always looked at Tobias and his brother as lesser than them (one of the reasons his father disliked them). They're not too fond of Casey, who has put them in their place on more than one occasion (so they don't like her either lol).

Several of his exes... but... only one (maybe two?) that he was remotely serious with. He was really a dick to his college girlfriend, Kara, who went on to be a prominent lawyer in DC, and while she doesn't think of him often, she never looks at him favorably. After the Hopkin's mess, his ex (and Ethan's ex) Vincenza really didn't think highly of either of them, but in time she forgave them both in time. His ex-long-term-situationship Audrey really disliked him for a while after he began dating Casey... as did a bevy of others who had hoped for more, but he swore that was never going to be his life... and now there he was. So there was some bitterness and a lot of talking shit, but they weren't much of an issue. (And Audrey eventually came around. lol)

Ethan / Kaycee land:

Kaycee: Her situation with Landry is pretty much the same as Casey's above, though I feel like there is a little less detesting on Landry's part. Why? Because he still idolized Ethan, and in some way, I think he figured if she was with Ethan, she couldn't have been that bad. Of course, Ethan thought he was a dick, but that didn't matter lol

I'm sure there are some staff at Edenbrook who dislike her because they are envious of her position and/or relationship with Ethan, but they tend to keep that to themselves because they don't want to deal with Ethan's ire.

I don't think many dislike Kaycee, but I think she is more low-key (compared to Casey) and flies below a lot of people's radar. Her circle is smaller, so there may not be as many who are crazy about her, but the opposite is also true. There are fewer who actively dislike her.

Ethan: While I do HC that Ethan softens a bit because, let's face it, he was an asshole when we met him, he is still a bit short and acerbic, and that really rubs some people the wrong way. Again, when it comes to work, many may not let that be known.

I HC him to have at least one very "Seinfeld/Newman-like" relationship with a patron at Donahue's and at least one neighbor. They've rubbed each other the wrong way for over a decade, and their very existence irritates the other, but they're not close so that limits the damage here. (PS, I HC that the neighbor adores Kaycee, which just makes the "thing" between them and Ethan worse, lol.)

Declan. Declan will forever hate Ethan, and Ethan will forever hate Declan. That will never, ever change.

Several Board Members. They respect him and look at him as a necessary burden because of his skill and what he brings to the hospital, but they're not at all fond of him as a person, and the feeling is very, very mutual.

Wow, a whole week with no headverse stuff or new art, my bad. I picked up a big project, so that’s going to be my focus for a while. That said, i had some older sketches I finished coloring a few weeks ago, so I thought I’d use them to dig a bit more into my OCs for the setting: Blanca Hernandez and Inza Ben-Hassin. Like Vivian, they’re both trans*women, which is something of a recurring theme for headverse OCs lol (Aloysius notwithstanding)

So Blanca is actually based on the Green Lantern of Earth-D, Jose Hernandez, but with the future handle of Jessica Cruz from JL vs The Fatal Five. Headverse!Jess actually served as the previous Limelight, specifically as the GL equivalent for LexCorp’s Infinity Incorporated (an enterprise that absolutely collapsed when at least two other members ended up being moles for major superheroes and the Pemberton Estate successfully sued over rights to the name). Limelights in general are usually just Lanterns whose rings weren’t forged on Oa but still access the Green Emotional Spectrum, with Blanca getting hers in the era following the collapse of the famous “Four” lanterns (Stewart, Jordan, Rayner, Gardner) as 2814′s protectors, with Jo Mullein, Jess Cruz, Simon Baz, and others filling in the roles of cosmic protectors.

Inza is largely a composite character of Inza Kramer (the original Dr Fate’s girlfriend/eventual wife) and the Earth-2 Fate, Khalid Ben-Hassin. She’s a Kahndaqi-German folkorist and literally wrote the book on Black Adam, Aztar, Heggra, and even Nabu, which drew her into the orbit of med student Khalid Nassour, Nabu’s current host as Doctor Fate. I’ve gone back and forth with whether or not Inza ever becomes Fate herself, but she does become quite skilled in spellcasting and eventually takes on the name Northwind after incorporating Thanagarian mysticism into her arsenal.

Like I said, I might be slowing down with headverse stuff for a bit while I’m focused on other things, but I’ve got another major OC lined up soon. They’re a bit different in that they’re not a reworking of an existing character or concept at all, though they’re seeped in DC lore and take a lot of visual cues from an existing family of characters.

This will mostly be a relaxed environment but you will get kicked for inactivity, so at the very least talk in our general chat.

RE: MOIRA’S PERSONALITY AND GENERAL OUTLOOK Moira’s personality and her general methods of interacting with people change drastically between the years of her timeline verses. She’s not a constant malicious, evil, horrible person from birth even though she is 100% capable of being all those things in the present day.

But, honestly the fact that she’s able to hold a highly respected job within a city that uses fucking crime prediction future police bullshit without anyone catching wind of her involvement with Talon is somewhat proof that Moira is at least capable of two facing the hell out of situations.

Anyways, shit’s sorted by verse.

Pre-B.lackwatch

Starting off in her pre-B.lackwatch verse she’s relatively aloof, sarcastic, mildly egotistic and moderately snide, definitely seen as ‘strange’ in her mannerisms but not at all potentially threatening or really all that different from other young scientists who have the idea in their head that they’re going to personally change the world. That is, until the results of her experimentation and her research papers spread through the scientific community and she’s ejected from the research facility that was funding her research and, in being thoroughly condemned by O.verwatch, unable to acquire funding for at least a year before being contacted by B.lackwatch’s commander. At the earliest time allotted within the verse she’s young, age 25 and working towards her PhD and could be described as a pretty normal person outside of her special interests. At the latest she’s on the cusp of discoveries backed by unethical research on test animals and the start of dangerous self experimentation, and her behavior is a bit more erratic and self destructive in the long run.

B.lackwatch

Following the offer extended to her by Reyes to join B.lackwatch on the premise that she will be assisting him with undisclosed genetic issues in exchange for funding for her experiments, Moira in a way almost begrudgingly accepts the offer– truthfully uncomfortable with the idea of working under the organization that in reality attempted to silence her due to fears of her life’s work potential to be used maliciously. Overall, all throughout her involvement in B.lackwatch she has a very poor opinion of O.verwatch as a whole and of the scientists within that only endure the limits mindlessly put on research by the organization who has no idea how true scientific progress works– constantly aware of their hypocrisy in stating that her work was dangerous when they have no issue in allowing B.lackwatch to operate, in co-opting the fruits of her research into weapon development, and in the lengths they’ll go to to procure certain types of weapons / allies ( ie G.enji being turned into a living weapon instructed to assassinate his clan in exchange for his life ). There are few people within O.vewatch and it’s offshoot organizations that she actually holds at high esteem, which include Reyes himself and Dr Ziegler and a handful more that she is tolerable towards including G.enji and, surprisingly enough, Jesse.

In her B.lackwatch verse, Moira is not overtly malicious towards people unless she has a good reason to do so. Her involvement within B.lackwatch is seen as a means to an end for her at first, but she eventually grows to enjoy the work and the opportunities she later receives through it and typically would avoid acting out to ensure her position with in the covert ops group remains a constant. Moira is capable of being a decent person when she so desires, despite her outlook being drastically jaded by her experiences just years prior. She’s sarcastic, sometimes bitingly so and comes off as mean on more than a handful of occasions, persuasive, ambitious, methodological, overall enigmatic, and to just cut things short, her flaws are everything in italics in this post.

The assumption that she’s overtly dangerous and must not be trusted by other people in this specific area of time is typically backed by O.verwatch’s claims regarding the scope of her research and the potential for it to be used for malicious reasons ( and in fanon, the belief that she’s a double agent but until further canon developments I don’t at all subscribe to that in my interpretation of her. l o l ), yet her only documented test subjects ( at this point in time ) are rabbits ( unethically experimented on ), Reyes ( volunteered test subject ) and herself ( self experimentation that ruins her right arm and later gives her the ability to fade across distances ). Obviously other characters are allowed to feel how they want towards her, but she’s not out there ruining ppl’s lives all willy-nilly yet in this verse, unless she was instructed to by Reyes I guess since B.lackwatch has no problem with kidnapping, torturing, and murdering people as a means to an end.

Either way, she typically semi-enjoys? Or at least tolerates the company of a small handful of her teammates while on missions together despite her desire to never really leave the lab,even if they go sour considering the amount of banter and the type of some of it during the Retribution event. Naturally Moira does lean towards liking Reyes, obviously, and G.enji more than Jesse. l o l Obviously B.lackwatch OCs are on a get to know basis, but there’s some that she interacts with that she’s relatively friendly towards.

Talon / Oasis

As the years go by she increasingly grows more callous and destructive towards other people, this mostly starting in the aftermath following the Venice mission and her quick expulsion from B.lackwatch. This verse is where her skills of manipulation and persuasiveness shine, effectively able to secure multiple methods of funding to do whatever horrible stuff she pleases with on one end and on the other to actually achieve the goals she set out to do when she was still just a young adult fresh out of college.

Moira’s behavior is effectively split right down the middle depending on what role she’s acting in, from being a relatively ‘ changed ‘ person while under the public eye of Oasis to indulging in her darkness desires while working under Talon. She has little regard for the safety of others while involved in Talon endeavors and has been known to perform her experimentations on various mercenaries and general Talon outfitted troopers that were either unknowingly hired for such purposes or have outlived their usefulness on the field. While on the other hand, her work within Oasis adheres to all guidelines set out by the Ministers to ensure her position within the scientific community there remains as such.

Moira’s connection to Talon is something that is still only at best a rumor that seems no one has actually been able to prove and thus only a few people actually know of her involvement! These people being R.eaper, S.ombra, D.oomfist, W.idowmaker, and all the other various Talon higher ups and I would say they’re all people she gets along okay-ish with. She found a patron in Akande and she herself highly respects him ( even though she is in a way against his desire to start another war, pls don’t let him know that though l o l ), aaaaand I would say he’s one of two people she would get along relatively best with. The other being Reaper b/c canonically she’s known him at a personal level far longer than anyone else she’s currently working with. As for S.ombra, Moira respects her abilities and her technological know how but doesn’t really know much about her ( as it should be l o l ??? she def doesn’t know S.ombra’s actual name b/c why should she? ). W.idowmaker is a hat toss, I have no real opinion on if Moira helped make Widow or not, but I like to conform to the head canons about it of the Widows I interact with, I guess. Overally, Moira likes Widow’s efficiency and is not above instructing the scientists below her to periodically check the status of Widow’s condition along side occasionally making inquiries towards it herself.

Do you have a favourite, or rather most often used character for your stories?

OMG OMG, thank you so much for being my first ask! And what a great question! The answer is going to be a little long and rambling, but I promise, there’s a point! So I don’t necessarily use the same OC multiple times now days. I do, however, catch myself using the same type of stock characters (I.e. Jesse Stone) that are furiously independent women that come from hardship backgrounds and don’t have a lot of family or close friends, because that’s my own background. Jesse is unique in the fact that she doesn’t want romantic interest- so if you look at her above the surface, she is a stark copy of current day feminist (but if you look below the surface, she is just extremely afraid of being hurt because of her past and doesn’t know how to connect because she never was socially allowed because of her circumstances) HOWEVER when I first started out I did this, and if you follow my blog you will see a lot of that in upcoming WIPs that I’ve been working on since I was in high school. I would create the same character and plant her in different worlds, a lot of the times based on characters I found on TV and fell in love with. Now, I was raised in the era where soap operas were the thing to do and I was a big fan of General Hospital. My favorite character was a young girl, now my age, named Georgie Jones. She was sweet, strongly independent and still believed furiously in love. Basically, in my eyes this has always been the ideal woman, especially in fiction because I found her so realistic and relatable. Now this was also the era where feminism was getting a big reboot, so this was the big sort of ideal female at the time and most of my fiction was based on Georgie and her partner, Dillon. Sadly, a lot of these have been lost.Shortly after this, I fell in love with Charmed. Which really got me into fantasy writing. So a lot of early works were based on Charmed, and in fact my WIP, witch Rising is quite largely and obviously based off Charmed (hopefully I’ll be publishing it soon).So there’s kind of a round about answer to your question. When I first started, yes I would use the same OC’s based on tv show characters. It was great for figuring out my writing style and how to write, but not so much in newer projects. I really like writing unique characters like Dr. Soni and Zack (The Stone Files), so you’ll see a lot of unique representations in newer pieces.Sorry it was such a long answer, but it was a really great question! Hello!!! I think you don't do this anymore but I'll ask just in case: if you had to come up with a japanese first name containing themes like "Heart" and "Freedom/wind/sky" what would you think would be good? I have no idea how Japanese works with names and the whole "oh this character means this/is used for this word" so pretty please help a girl out 🙏

Hi! I don't mind doing name generation from time to time still, I just don't always have time to answer asks, haha.

Assuming you want a girl's name, you could do Fuuko as 風心 (wind heart) or Yuuko as 由心 (free heart), which would be a common name with an uncommon kanji combination. If you wanted to be less realistic but more distinctive, you could do Kozora as 心空 (heart sky) or something. Not a real name, but kinda sounds like one.

For a boy's name, it's trickier, but you could possibly do Yuugo as 由心 (freedom heart). It'd be very uncommon and people would have to ask how to read it, but a legit name with kanji you're allowed to use!

*me bringing back the OC name generator* do you think Aragaki Homura (新垣 炎) could pass as a unisex name?

Hmmm... I've never heard of Homura as a unisex name before, only used for girls.

If you're going for a nonbinary character then I think the name works perfectly fine!

If you're using it for a male character and the setting isn't super realistic, then it can also work!

If you're using it for a male character and the setting is realistic, then you might want to include some confusion from other characters or something to denote that it's intentionally unconventional.

re: your kanji choices, I've seen both the family name choices in names before, I'm not 100% sure on 炎 though.

The first one that comes to mind is 砂糖鹿妻 (Sugar DeerWife) and honestly?

What do you think of Nanashino Gonbei (名無野 権兵衛) as a name of an SHSL Unknown? I did a little googling and I found out that Nanashi no Gonbei (名無し の 権兵衛) is the Japanese equivalent of John Doe, that was where the idea came from. Or should I use Himino Jondou (秘密野 如音憧) instead? The "Himi" part was taken from the word "himitsu" (秘密), and the Jondou is,,, well,,, John Doe xD

I feel like Nanashino Gonbei would be the DR version of the character, while the Himino Jondou would be the Gyakuten Saiban version.

Is the family name Yumekawa? 

I love it though, omg. As far as I know, Zousei isn’t a name, but it sounds enough like a name to fly under the radar.

Yes, Zousei would be the given name, and Yumekawa the family name (I guess putting them in diferent orders in romaji/kanji might've been confusing, whoops)
