Jesse Treece
Jesse Treece, a collage artist based in Seattle, crafts simple but complex reflections of everyday life. Using just scissors, glue, and ancient magazines and books, he merges the mundane with the extraordinary, the beautiful with the terrifying.
César Domela-Nieuwenhuis
César Domela, a Dutch artist who died in 1992, left behind an output that was both extensive and diverse. A portion of it was passed down to his daughters, Lie Tugayé-Domela Nieuwenhuis and Anne Dutter-Domela Nieuwenhuis. His work was favourably accepted, and it was featured in the exhibition Cubism and Abstract Art at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1936.

Whether is analogue or digital, the art of collage challenges the imagination and can be interpreted in numerous ways.
I came across this great article on the history and meaning of collage art.
“Realism or Surrealism? Not all collage art is a mirror of the world as we know it. Sometimes artists appropriate and distort aspects of reality to create parallel universes which—being both recognisable and unfamiliar to us at the same time—challenge our perception of reality.”
I’ve selected five collage works from five of my favourite collage artists.

FAS3000: Sketchbook layout pages (part 6)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For these pages, I’ve added my final pieces that didn’t end up on the board as they all reflected my past samples and techniques. I’ve made sure to incorporate every technique that I enjoyed or thought to be relevant with my narrative in these samples to visually communicate the coexistence of plants and buildings. Techniques such as free running stitch machine embroidery (Alice Kettle, Corrine Young and Gillian Bates), solufleece (Alice Kettle), weaving (Peggy Osterkamp, Kazuhito Takadoi and Katherine Swailes) disperse dye (Marie- Therese Wisnioski), and digital print (Jesse Treece and Peter Blake), along with wadding stuffing to illustrate the tight structure of the building and the flowy and free growth of the plants, which contrast with each other using techniques and colours to show juxtaposition and their coexistence. I like how the threads are use to reflect the freeness of the plants, which juxtaposes the rigid and tight structure of the building by the straight lines and shapes used. I also like how I incorporated my previous samples to makes these using their images to show their techniques and to replicate my primary images to communicate the relationship between the plants and buildings. However, an improvement to these pieces would be to add and mix different techniques for each sample/piece to show diversity in visually communicating my narrative, instead of mostly using the same techniques for each samples. Different techniques such as pin tucking, pleating (to show the straight structure of the building), screen printing (to illustrate the shapes of the plants and building) and etc.
