Transform Your Shower into a Self-Care Haven with the Power of Shower Steamers
Shower steamers are little tablets that dissolve in the water while you're in the shower, releasing natural ingredients and scented essential oils to give you a spa-like experience. They are made for the shower and are comparable to bath bombs. Bath shower steamers don't produce bubbles or froth as bath bombs do, but they do discharge a reviving perfume that fills your bathroom with a calming sensation.

y’all know what this is?!
it is a clump of jewelweed seedlings!
common jewelweed (impatiens capensis) is native to north america and likes to grow along waterways. in the summertime she grows lovely little orange flowers.
but my favorite thing about her is her sap! it’s great for topical use on irritated skin. i make salves out of it and other happy-skin plants every summer. AND anD if you apply the sap to an area of skin that’s been exposed to poison ivy, it can prevent the rash from developing.
OMG there’s a poison ivy preventative!? well. . . no. this is a more of a “i am in the middle of the woods and have no soap and water but i DO have this plant” situation.
the thing is, you have to have to apply the jewelweed sap almost immediately after exposure to urushiol (the itchy juice in poison ivy), and if you’ve been in contact with poison ivy for more than a few minutes – which most people are because they don’t recognize/notice it – then it’s DEF not going to work. urushiol is absorbed by the skin too fast.
it’s still a cool plant and it DOES reduce itchiness and irritation from dermatitis and bug bites. 🦟

Many herbalists also squeeze the juice into ice cube trays to make “jewelweed cubes” that can be used year round or thawed and used in lye water to make jewelweed soap. It is also easy to tincture jewelweed into high proof alcohol or into commercial witchhazel solution for later use.

Side effects may include
Not that anyone reading this really follows for my personal life, but I was clearing some brush in the backyard and got some poison ivy all up in my face and also arm despite my best precautions. (Turns out for the jewelweed/lye soap to work, you actually have to read the instructions.)
Anyway, because I was having tight throat and headache issues, the doc prescribed me prednisone, and said to me, unprompted: “so the most common side effects with this are seeing and hearing things, have you ever had any trouble with that?” And my low-blood pressure seeing-things-that-aren’t-physically-there-in-my-peripheral-vision ass was like “yes, yes I do.” I googled the side effects in detail, and they may include dizziness, skin rashes or acne (irony), and psychosis.
Only one dose so far, just a little dizzy. Headache and itching have subsided a bit, though. Let’s see how this goes.

Try This Quick Homemade Solution to Treat Poison Ivy Symptoms
Anyone who’s ever stepped in a patch of poison ivy knows it’s no fun – the itchy red bumps can ruin your whole day.
But there’s a simple, straightforward way to treat this nasty reaction so you don’t end up scratching at it for hours and causing further damage to your skin.
This home remedy is easy, safe, and effective, so keep it in mind the next time you’re out camping in the woods.
You never know when it might come in handy.
Homemade Treatment For Poison Ivy
To start with, you’ll need a few ingredients. These are:
Rubbing alcohol
Cool water
Soap
Hydrocortisone cream
Calamine lotion
Cotton balls
Menthol cream
and cool compresses.
Jewelweed sap is optional – many people swear that it works for treating poison ivy rashes, but the actual scientific evidence is conflicted on this point; some studies say it works(1) while others disagree(2).
Instructions
First, pour rubbing alcohol on the area that came into contact with poison ivy. It’s important to start this process as soon as you can to head off the outbreak.
Rinse the rubbing alcohol with cold water (not warm or hot water, which can cause the toxins to spread on your skin), then thoroughly wash the area with soap and water, being sure to scrub underneath your fingernails as well.
Remove any clothes that might have come into contact with the plant and wash them in hot water.
Next, keep an eye on the affected area. You may notice a rash developing – this can take the form of redness, bumps on the skin, or even blisters. You won’t be able to cure the rash itself – that will go away on its own – but you can mitigate the itchiness and make it more bearable in the meantime.
Once the rash has begun to form, use over-the-counter anti-itch creams like menthol cream, calamine lotion, and hydrocortisone cream on the area affected by the rash. These creams all have anti-inflammatory properties, which will help control your body’s response to the rash(3). You can also try jewelweed sap at this point, especially if you favor all-natural home remedies to over-the-counter medications.
Finally, apply cool compresses to the affected area, and take an oral antihistimine before bed to make you drowsy and help ease the symptoms.
Knowing When To See A Doctor
Most cases of poison ivy aren’t anything you need to see a doctor for – they’re an inconvenience, but they aren’t life threatening. However, you should seek medical attention if you start to notice any of the following symptoms: swelling of the mouth, throat, tongue or nose, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a high fever.
You should also check in with a doctor if the rash is all over your body, in your mouth, or on your genitals.
If the rash starts to ooze puss and hasn’t cleared up in a few weeks, that’s also a good reason to see a doctor – you may have caused a secondary infection by scratching too much.

New Englander Pine & Jewel’d Honey
Tumblr media
Another in our New Englander Series. Same base recipes, with a couple of changes - Local Honey from a neighboring farm and Jewelweed.  The combo of the Pine Resin and sweetness of Honey is wonderfully awakening! We've been wanting to make a soap representing a simple New England Life, how it might have been a hundred years ago.  Here is a soap with ingredients that can be found in the woods around you, your garden, or a local farm.  We've sourced local products when we could, and the rest, well, because of the shear bulk that we use, we purchased elsewhere, but the ingredients can be found here. A lovely scent that just reminds us of the "olden days".   A wonderful texture with ground organic oatmeal, and there is the added loveliness of Maple Syrup from a farm up the street from us.  The Pine resin has wonderful skin cleansing properties, and the other oils used to be used regularly long ago. New Englander - Pine & Jewel'd Honey MA Organically Fed Lard,  MA Organically Fed Goat Milk, Organic Sunflower Hi Oleic Oil, Lye (NaOH), MA Ghee, Pine Resin, MA Beeswax, MA Local Honey, Calendula EO, Organic or Wild Crafted Jewelweed, Juniper Berry EO, Lavender EO, Peppermint EO, Rosemary EO, Organic Cranberry Seed Oil Superfatted 14% Wrapped in biodegradable film which has random openings for milk soap to breathe #CalendulaEO #JuniperBerryEO #LavenderEO #MABeeswax #MAGhee #MALocalFarmedLard #MALocalHoney #MAOrganicallyFedGoatMilk #MAWildCraftedJewelweed #Organiccranberryseedoil #OrganicSunflowerHiOleicOil #PeppermintEO #PineResin #RosemaryEO Read the full article
