Introduction: Released in 1967, “Miles Smiles” is widely regarded as a landmark recording by Miles Davis and his Second Great Quintet, featuring saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Tony Williams. This album marked the quintet’s evolution into more experimental and abstract forms of jazz, blending traditional post-bop elements with avant-garde…

A Sweet Treat: Heath Brother’s Interview MAWSB #11
In my previous blogs, I talked briefly about the famed Philadelphian Jazz siblings the Heath brothers. I brought up sax great Jimmy Heath and his bassist brother Percy. Albert Heath, who we have not previously mentioned, was the third prominent jazz sibling of the clan (Condit, 2003, p.43). Albert rose to prominence playing with the previously mentioned Benny Golson and got even more acclaim playing with the John Coltrane quartet (Condit, 2003, p.43). Jazz educator and saxophonist Rick Condit was lucky enough to interview the three brothers during a stint at the famed Iridium, which some jazz/guitar fans might know was Les Paul’s haunt in his later years (Condit, 2003, p.43). In Condit’s 2003 Journal article “The Heath Brothers: Giants of Jazz” we learn the brothers' influences, their history, the jazz circuit at the time, and the jazz scene of Philadelphia in the forties and fifties (Condit, 2003, p.45). Bassist Percy Heath recalls how his mother would take him to the Lincoln Center, which was part of the “chitlin circuit”, the same circuit that gave Jimi Hendrix and Little Richard prominence, at the young age of eight (Condit, 2003, p.45). The Lincoln Center, which still plays jazz concerts today in Philadelphia, had Percy experience greats such as Louis Armstrong, Willie Bryant, and Cab Calloway, at a very young age (Condit, 2003, p.45). Rick Condit asked the brothers, “What made Philadelphia Jazz different?” and “Why did artists come to Philadelphia to play Jazz?” (Condit, 2003, p.45). As mentioned in the other blogs I have written, saxophonist Jimmy Heath brings up the subject of the second-string bebop players in Philadelphia in the forties (Condit, 2003, p.45). In Jimmy’s words, he said, "Philadelphia being only 90 miles from New York, all the groups would come to Philly and perform. So we were in on the ground floor of the bebop generation.” (Condit, 2003, p.45). This statement that he said gives credence to the idea that the city of Philadelphia was partly responsible for shaping the sound of bebop jazz, which ultimately permutated to the style of hardbop jazz. What Jimmy is saying, is that since Philadelphia was in relatively proximity to New York, a jazz musician could get extra playing gigs, as well as scope out the scene happening in Philadelphia (Condit, 2003, p.45). Jimmy stated that not only big greats like Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker would come play shows at the bigger venues at Philadelphia, but that smaller talented local bands would regularly play at the clubs in the local jazz scene (Condit, 2003, p.45). Jimmy Heath said that the local Philly Jazz scene was “flourishing” so the whole jazz scene fed off one another (Condit, 2003, p.45). You could see upcomers one night at a small club, or a big name act one night at a bigger venue. Percy Heath states “Philadelphia was like a stopover because it was cheaper to be in Philly than to be in New York. So, all these guys could develop their skills and then hit New York when they got straight.” (Condit, 2003, p.45).
This article contributes greatly to my research, as I now understand, thanks to both Rick Condit and the Heath brothers, why Philadelphia was so important to the jazz scene. It appears that initially in the 1920’s and 1930s big band jazz players would play Philadelphia as a stopover gap to the much bigger payday of Manhattan. It appears that both Manhattan and Philadelphia were creating a new form of jazz from the early 1940s to mid-1950s the style of bebop. The big names of bebop of Manhattan were influencing the second-line beboppers, up-and-coming young guns of the scene. Since these younger players were younger and more brash in Philadelphia and were largely playing for themselves and each other, and not for a bandleader quite yet, this allowed them to be way more experimental with their playing. Because of this, Philadelphia created the style of hardbop jazz from these experimental second-line beboppers, which in turn ushered in a new jazz age of the mid-1950s to late 1960s, before fusion started coming into shape. We all know Philadelphia is a big city, but, strangely, we always seem to be in the shadow of New York. However, it goes to show, that because of Philadelphia, jazz was able to thrive and give shape to its hottest players, along with shaping the genre.
For production day unfortunately I did not get to join Zoom as I had work during that time. I would like to see if there is time with Professor Zaylea, or perhaps fellow cohort Joelle Delprete to go over the GH5 camera. I have a classmate of mine who, while not part of my cohort, could be a resource. His name is Robb Koncyzk, and while I don’t think he has spent much time with the GH5, is very familiar with Canon DSLR cameras, and would imagine, it would not be a far stretch from the GH5. Maybe I can set aside time to meet with any one of these individuals, if they have free time, I know this semester has been hectic, to learn some of the basics. There are two classmates of mine Tison Whitten and Tyler Loughery who seem to know a good deal about framing, as I have seen both of their work. Maybe, if they were willing, I could ask them how to get good shots and prepare. That being said, with the T.V. News Practicum class, I have been doing packages learning how to use the T.V. camera, microphone, tripod, and shotgun mic. For work at the University of Penn, I have been learning and doing recordings using a Panasonic camera mounted on a tripod connected to a Zoom recorder. For the T.V. News Practicum, Advanced Video Editing, and for my A.V. job at Penn, I have been utilizing both Adobe Audition and Premiere for editing both audio and video. For one assignment for Advanced Video Editing, I had trouble using the Blue Snowball mic. I finally found a certain setup to get good results from it, without feedback, hiss, or other weird effects that were happening. Two weeks ago, I used the T.V. Kit Camera and Rode shotgun mic to record voiceovers. I was having trouble getting a decent sound, as all my initial attempts sounded distorted. With the help of producer Maggie Przywara, I learned that the gain was set high on the camera, which led to voice-overs being recorded and distorted. Adjusting the gain helped get a cleaner signal and cleaner recording for the voiceovers. I hope to get some time to test the GH5 this week, and to meet with someone who can show me the basics of it.

sooooo....
who do y'all think is the dark-haired movie star that jack has a picture of pinned up in his childhood bedroom? 👀
PERSONALLY, I think it's either James Dean or Ricky Nelson. I think the more realistic of the two options is Ricky Nelson, though. I'd love for it to have been James Dean just because a lot of people compare Heath as Ennis to James Dean as Jett Rink in Giant. I'm not so sure if that's based on the performance they give, or if it's based purely on their aesthetics alone, but like. Heath really did have that James Dean cool down as Ennis (if only a slighttt bit more awkward). And I mean...c'mon, look at this picture and tell me that Jack wouldn't, at least for a moment, see Ennis standing outside of Aguirre's office and think immediately of his boyhood crush

No wonder Jack was pulling at any excuse to eye him up lol!!
The only reason I don't think it could realistically be James is bc he was a dirty blond, just like Heath was c': and the short story specifically says it was a dark-haired movie star!
#i have never actually seen this get discussed on the old brokeback forums and i am eager to hear opinions#altho...i'm not sure how many ppl are familiar w hollywood starlets of the 50s and 60s lol 😭#brokeback mountain#ennis del mar#heath ledger#jack twist#jake gyllenhaal#james dean#yes jimmy you get your own tag on this post too...#still brokeback posting#anyways i have a whole like ficlet idea ive been playing w in my head surrounding the dark haired movie star photo besides jacks bed n#i just got curious

Week ending: 3rd December 1953
Well, here we are, our first Christmassy post. It' a festive bunch of songs, and normally I'd object to this in November, but I'm off to a month-early Christmas dinner, so for once, it' fine, mostly.
I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus - Jimmy Boyd (peaked at No. 3)
It's a song I know, but I don't think this is the standard version nowadays, and there's good reason for that. Jimmy Boyd first appeared on the tooth-upsetting Tell Me a Story, duetting with Frankie Laine, and this solo outing is very much a continuation of some similar trends.
Throughout, Jimmy is deliberately very "kidd-y". He was 13 when he recorded it, but the vibe is even younger, and there's little that I like less than deliberately cutesy kids. Kids are cute all the time without needing to deliberately "cutesy" it up.
It also doesn't help that his voice is particularly nasal, and done no favours by a version of this song that's a good clip slower than the version I'm familiar with.
It's a solid enough idea for a song, though - clever even! The kid doesn't know that dad's playing Santa, so he thinks (seemingly without any understanding of infidelity, which, fair, because kid) that he's caught his mother enjoying a moment with Santa. "What a laugh it would have been, if daddy had only seen!" indeed.
As a kid, I for whatever reason didn't pick up on the first part, but I did pick up on the infidelity thing, and even at quite a young age I just assumed the joke was that his mother was cheating on dad with Santa. Which... merry Christmas, I guess?
Apart from that little bit of mild wink-wink naughtiness, this version is actually quite sleepy, fitting for a song set apparently quite late at night on Christmas eve. There's some floaty organ, some steel guitar and some ghostly backing singers going "oooooh", plus that Christmas staple, some bells at the end.
I should like this more, really. It's just irritating, and a touch too slow. There will be better versions of this - heck, I can see one coming up again pretty soon!
Dragnet - Ted Heath & His Orchestra (9)
The title here immediately said theme tune to me - and some research told me I was right, this is a cover of the theme music to the eponymous US cop show, Dragnet.
In fact, it was apparently iconic enough that the "daaa-da-da-da' tune here became shorthand for "scene with cops" in various media ever since. Not sure if that still holds true today, but it is catchy and distinctive, combining stabbing, low brass with timpani and some clashy, discordant chords, before breaking into something very jazzy. It's menacing, and feels dangerous, but also cool.
It's good, dramatic music - I know this is a big band cover, but I hope the original is just as punchy. It's simple but effective, repeating the same four notes in different combinations ad nauseam and building to a big note finish, with some trumpets going "waah-waah-waah".
One bit also vaguely sounds like the string chase from the Doctor who theme, which I love. Accidental, but cool.
I don't know why people were going out and buying this as a single, that's my only question here. Did they want to re-enact their favourite TV show? Save the memory of the theme tune, in an era where TV wasn't readily repeatable? It's a banger, but I don't know, I'm not sure I would have gone out to buy it.
I think my favourite here has to be clear, despite my Christmassy mood. One song annoyed me. One I actually quite liked.
Favourite of the bunch: Dragnet

Roll list of characters who were on the show in 2019:
- Nate's dead, killed by John
- Amy's dead in a limo crash and has left Matty a widow
- Leyla also died in the limo crash
- Vanessa is still around but her girlfriend died in the limo crash after kissing Rhona's mum
- Rhona and Marlon are married, Rhona acquired a baby just over a year ago and April ran away over Christmas while pregnant. The baby died and April is still struggling.
- Graham got killed a long time ago by Pierce.
- Ellis was recast and then disappeared again eventually, I can't remember why.
- Billy is now married to Dawn, but they've recently split up because Dawn wasn't in love with him anymore (aka she's been sleeping with Joe). They have a couple of adopted children and one biological child, Evan, who's been really ill for a while.
- Nicola and Jimmy are still married and happy.
- Brenda just left with Cathy on a cruise, Cathy's coming back but Brenda isn't.
- Heath died last year in a car crash caused by Angel, Cathy was accused of being behind the wheel and it was all very sad because Bob blamed her and she couldn't grieve properly while Angel stayed silent.
- Priya left a couple of years ago to be with Amba in London. Rishi died not long after, being killed by Jai's secret dad who he later ran out of town.
- Jai and Laurel split up last year. It was messy.
- Kim was widowed at christmas after Dawn's dad died of a heart attack while trying to screw her over. Joe watched, king behaviour.
- Sam and Lydia are still happy.
- Gabby has recently got with Mandy's son, Vinny, and has a child with Jamie Tate who was causing some friction, but they're now engaged I guess.
- Tracy has a child with Nate and is currently questioning why he fucked off to Scotland and hasn't been giving her child support.
- Eric is fine, he was with Brenda for a bit but then he ruined it by being Eric. He does have Parkinsons though.
- Faith died a few years ago, it was very sad and very Faith.
- Talking of, she had a secret son! Caleb, with Frank Tate. He's an absolute joy and sometimes fights with Cain but mostly has the best failmarriage in the show with Ruby, who he has two kids with. Steph will be relevant as she's on the show and is currently struggling with the revelation that her biological father is actually her grandad, as he abused Ruby and got her pregnant as a teen. Ruby killed him about it, and it's currently a big cover-up involving Caleb, Cain, John, Aaron, and Moira. Jai and Joe also know.
- Cain and Moira are still married, somehow. They've been their usual dramatic selves but I'd be here all day. Worth noting that Moira had a brain tumour over winter but is fine now.
- I'm sure everyone knows, but Liv died in a storm after being crushed by a caravan in 2022.
- Harriet also died in said storm.
- Charity and Vanessa are no longer together, she's now married to Moira's brother, Mackenzie. He and Aaron are really close and have a fab bond.
- Jacob is training to be a doctor and is a will they won't they with Sarah.
- Belle recently took over Take a Vow, she's not long out of an abusive marriage with Tom King.
- David left after Jacob got with Victoria, who David had previously been engaged to. They split up 5 minutes later so that strange storyline was pointless.
- Ross is back! He's with Steph for now, and mostly cracks jokes and fights with Joe.
- Ross revealed soon after he returned that Rebecca had died after complications following a routine surgery, and Seb ended up with an auntie in Liverpool. Robert knows, Ross visited him offscreen and told him. He gave his approval for the aunt to take Seb.
- Joe is also back, he's been very shady and has split up Dawn and Joe. Charity is suspicious of him, rightly. He needed a kidney transplant and his first one failed, so he returned to the village so he could take one from his family. He tried to get Noah's, but he was incompatible and Noah ended up drugged and stumbling onto a road which a limo swerved to avoid, hence the limo crash. He then decided to have Caleb stabbed and took his kidney, which was successful, God bless. Caleb now knows and it's chill.
- Chas is currently engaged to Dr Cavanagh (Liam), her marriage to Paddy broke down after he discovered she was sleeping with Billy and Ellis' dad (Al) and was planning to run away with him and Eve (Chas and Paddy's kid).
- Paddy is married to Mandy.
- Arthur is gay! But we never see him so.
- Manpreet split up with Charles a while ago. She had a lucky escape from Charles' awful mother, Claudette, really.
- Zak died last year, in a really heartbreaking week of episodes. Would recommend watching.
- Wendy only left the village a couple of months ago. Those two haven't watched since Robert left are. So. Lucky.
- Dan is in jail for manslaughter over punching a guy that was being creepy to Amelia
- Amelia is somewhere with Daz and her child she had with Samson
- Samson is also in jail! He was meant to be killed off but people somehow cared enough that the decision was reversed, and he just went down for perverting the course of justice instead.
- Kerry is still on the show. She had a secret daughter appear a few years ago, but thankfully, that didn't last long. She just kind of exists, really.
#i think that's everything?#emmerdale#robert sugden#< target audience#edit: i added dan amelia samson and kerry bc it was bugging me. not that i care about them.#edit: heath!!!
