In the end Joël and Roy decide to meet for lunch at McDonalds. Joël’s been trying to avoid fast food but after having been to the gym three days in a row he reckons he deserves a cheat day, and it’s definitely a venue that’s toddler-friendly. He dresses Alice in her Llamas Onesie, a hand-me-down from Jared.

“Hey, is that the onesie I gave Jared?” says Roy. Alice squirms with delight and crams another nugget into her mouth. Joël shrugs, his mouth full of burger.

“Probably,” he finally manages to say.

“I can get you half a dozen brand new ones, you know,” says Roy. “No need for poor Alice to wear her big brother’s hand-me-downs.”

“She’s not poor Alice, and it’s fine,” says Joël. “We’ve got cupboards full of clothes. Anita never threw any baby clothes out. It was like she knew we were going to have another one.”  

“Well, I still can’t fully believe it,“ says Roy, shaking his head. “The fact that Neets got pregnant at fifty. It's practically unheard of. You do know how lucky you are, right?"

“Of course I know,” says Joël, irritated. “Why do you think I’m so keen on this stay-at-home Dad gig? Because I know exactly how miraculous it is that we have Alice. I’m going to be there for every milestone in my daughter’s life, dude, and all the other moments as well. All of them. “

Roy puts down his burger and fixes him with a sombre and narrow gaze.

“Never take time spent with your kids for granted, dude,” he says, in a voice that is uncharacteristically flat. “That’s all I’m trying to say.”

He lost his left forearm when he saved his twin brother's life at the start of the apocalypse. He knows how to use a handgun even with one arm, and regularly go out to scout. He is afraid that Alex's experiment might kill him, and is very overprotective of him since he got scarred because of one.

Ein Funksender für das iPhone von 2008 oder 2009

Vor ein paar Tagen kam mir in einer Tüte, die weit hinten in einem Regal in der Garage versteckt lag, ein kleines Teil entgegen, das so aussah:

Ich hatte es 2008 oder 2009 erworben. Es war von Griffin und hieß iTrip. Es war ein kleiner UKW Funksender, den man an das iPhone anschließen konnte.

Zu der Zeit wohnte ich noch weitab von der Arbeit und musste jeden Tag um die 80 km hin und zurück fahren. Und anstatt mir pfundweise Musik und Hörbücher auf CD zu brennen, um sie während der Fahrt zu hören, lud ich sie jetzt auf das Smartphone. Einen externen Anschluss gab es in meinem Wagen nicht, an den ich per Kabel den Audioausgang für Kopfhörer hätte anschließen können. Also kaufte ich diesen kleinen Zusatz. Es war jedoch ein friemeliges Teil, das eine sehr schwache Sendestärke hatte. Mit Strom wurde es aus der Batterie vom Smartphone versorgt. Es hatte einen Knopf, mit dem man eine Zufallsfrequenz einstellen konnte. Dann suchte man diese auf dem Radio mit dem Sendersuchlauf oder per Hand.Wenn die Zufallsfrequnez aber zu nah an einer Frequenz lag, auf der eine Radiostation sendete, gab es Störungen. Also musste man schon eine Reihe von Frequenzen durchprobieren, bis es passte. Das funktionierte auf langen Strecken nicht so besonders. Ich weiß noch, dass ich einmal von Luxemburg nach Köln fuhr und plötzlich waren die UKW Leerstellen in Luxemburg dann in Deutschland mit Radiostationen besetzt, was wieder zu Störungen führte.

Ich habe das Sendeteil lange benutzt, auch als das iPhone den Anschluss wechselte, weil es da einen Adapter gab. Als ich dann ein neues Auto bekam, das einen USB Anschluss am Radio hatte, wurde es überflüssig, weil ich alles dann über den USB Stick hören konnte.

Ich habe es übrigens eben an das Smartphone angeschlossen. Es geht immer noch!

"Where've Neets and Alice gone?" Roy says to Joël after he's finished skating. The triplets and Anya are still gliding around the ice, accompanied by a non-stop medley of up-tempo pop songs pounding from the wall speakers.

"They went to the coffee shop with Jared and Saffy," Joël says.

"Sweet. Did you see my forward spin, dude? Am I the fucking man or what?"

Joël shakes his head and shrugs dismissively.

"Liar," says Roy. "I know you've got a total jealousy boner right now. Hey, you want to sneak off to the bar and grab a beer? I need to tell you about something really freaky that happened to me last night at The Pony."

"You're still going to the Pony to see Crystal? Dude, what the actual-"

"Of course I am," says Roy. "Why wouldn't I be?"
