John Mayer Predicts “Best Tour So Far” for Dead & Company

When Dead & Company take the Madison Square Garden stage tonight, it’ll mark the launch of what John Mayer “believe(s) in my heart will be the best tour so far” for the latest Grateful Dead offshoot.

”Something is definitely spinning up in the air around us,” Mayer said in a Facebook post this morning.

Spanning 16 shows through Dec. 8 - not counting the group’s Nov. 9 appearance at the Band Together benefit - this tour is Dead & Company’s fourth since forming two years ago with Mayer, living Dead men Bob Weir, Mickey Hart & Bill Kreutzmann, plus former Allman Brothers bassist Oteil Burbridge & longtime post-Grateful Dead associate Jeff Chimenti on keys.

Acknowledging that he - like Mark Karan, Steve Kimock, Jimmy Herring, Warren Haynes, John Kadlecik & Trey Anastasio before him - is simply “an interpreter of a master,” Mayer said Dead & Company has nevertheless “developed a soul all its own” & called playing in the band “the great ongoing privilege of my life.”

”I play in constant emotional, psychological & musical deference to Jerry Garcia,” Mayer said.

”I suppose I thought it would become easier each tour to stand on that stage & go reaching for that sound & those colors, but it in some ways it gets harder - the deeper I go into the music, the more I realize what it deserves. Just know that with every show we play, I’ll never forget why it is I’m standing there.”

TODD SNIDER'S NO. 3 DREAM: Todd Snider will release a new album, Cash Cabin Sessions, Vol. 3 on March 15, 2019, and tour to support it.

In announcing the LP and concert dates on Facebook, Snider called the record a folk-influenced departure from his recent forays into rock and said it was inspired "by a recurring dream (I) had involving Johnny Cash and was recorded at the legend's Cash Cabin Studios."

Pre-order details will be announced shortly and the first single is set to drop Jan. 11, 2019.

GHOSTS OF TREY: Trey Anastasio has a new band, Ghosts of the Forest, which finds him paired with Phish drummer Jon Fishman, Trey Anastasio Band bassist Tony Markellis, keyboardist Ray Paczkowski and singers Jennifer Hartwick and Celisse. The group will do a short series of concerts on the East Coast in April 2019.
