SAINTS OF THE DAY (September 2)

The September Martyrs are a group of 191 faithful Christians who were martyred at the hands of the French Revolution on 2 - 3 September 1792.

After refusing to take an oath in support of the civil consititution of the clergy, an act condemned by the Vatican which placed Catholic priests under the authority and control of the state, these priests and religious brothers and sisters were imprisoned in a Carmelite convent and then massacred in the space of two days by bloodthirsty revolutionary mobs.

They were beatified on 17 October 1926 by Pope Pius XI.

Among the martyrs were Louis and Francis de la Rochefoucauld, the bishops of Saintes and Beauvais respectively, Apollinaris of Posat, John Francis Burte, Charles de la Calmette, Augustine Ambrose Chevreux, Andre Grasset de Saint Sauveur, John Mary de Lau, Severin Girault, Julian Massey, and Louis Barreau de la Touche.

The backgrounds were painted by John Calmette. They were designed by Jeff Starling, Jairo Lizarazu, Spencer Davis, and Maurice Edwards, under the direction of Eung Hwan Oh.

美國電影的發展形式是個頗有趣的問題。初期大多是攝影機固定

一處，自始至終，只攝製一個場面。後來攝影機改良，以及自歐洲

傳入各種攝影新技巧，和電影編輯的蒙太奇概念，使電影煥然一新。

如自法國傳入 G . Melies 發明的「幻術攝影」（Trick），英國傳入

蒙太奇概念。開創美國影片成為獨立的表現形式，而建立以後發展

基礎的第一位功臣，那是 彼泰，他對電影對表現最重要的編輯問題，

有最早的確定，成為日後導演們學習的模範。

1902年 彼泰 參觀魔術電影的影片製作場，獲得用數個場面連接起來

展開故事的新知識，就是分段拍攝的數個場面，依照劇情發展的順序

下連接，可以得到連續的印象。這個影片場景排列和編輯原則，就是

蒙太奇概念的起源。此外，還有兩件事就是1 . 特寫（close － up）

的利用。2 . 過去都是拍一個場景，現在改為三個場景連合構成。 ──

明星制度的產生早期的電影，並不重視演員。這個習慣被打破，最早

的是法國電影公司於 1908攝製的 L’Assassinat du Due de Guise，

將參加影片的全部工作人人員姓名，均印在影片卷首，之後被普遍

採用。有的還加上外號，如「捲髮女郎」、「癡女郎」、「有悲哀

眼睛的男人」以吸引觀眾，增加影片票房。這個人就是為反對影業

托拉斯，而成立的 IMPC（Independent Motion Picture Co .） 的

主持人 萊莫雷。 ──

Hitchcock 幼時愛好旅行，夢想出海航行世界各地，及長入倫敦大學

學習電機工程，之後家道中落，轉入廣告業，而和電影界發生關係，

因為寫得一手美術字體，進入倫敦製片廠字幕部任職。之後，轉任

美術導演，同時編寫劇本，再升任導演。

Hitchcock 用構圖和畫面明暗度的方法萊釀成氣氛和緊張的情緒。他

用縱、橫、仰角、鳥瞰等方式拍攝畫面中的人物，產生縱錯的構圖，

這構圖造成心理上的特殊效果。

John Calmette and Eric Radomski background paintings for Batman: The Animated Series (1992–1995)

In "Batman & Superman Magazine" #3 there's preview of Mask of the Phantasm that includes early sketches by artist Todd Winter of what would become the movie poster.

One of those sketches would go on to become the cover of the novelization.

There are some INCREDIBLE paintings included in that magazine. These are always credited to Kevin Altieri online, but I don't think that's the case.

For one thing, it says "Painting by Todd Winter" right there on the pages. The "A" signature seems to be out of place, but it's also on the novel cover. The credits on the table-of-contents reads:

Magazine credits are so messy. It's tiny and sideways on the page. It credits an Atom cover inset that isn't in Magazine. The Altieri/Calmette credit is for the cover which Altieri did pencils for and Calmette did the painting. They did multiple together.

This has all be an excuse for me to scan a bunch of art. As a bonus, here's a detail shot of the novel cover.
