SCY_0578 - Telephone Box and Lighthouse - Middle Town - St Agnes by John Luxton Via Flickr: A view towards St Agnes Lighthouse which dominates the heart of this Scillonian island. Today the lighthouse functions as a day mark having been replaced in 1911 by a new lighthouse at Peninnis on St Mary's. The lighthouse contrasts nicely with the GPO K6 phone box. Camera: Contax RTSII + Carl Zeiss 50mm f1.7 Planar lens For more 35mm archive photographs of St Agnes - Isles of Scilly please click here: www.jhluxton.com/The-35mm-Film-Archive/Isles-of-Scilly/St...

Flickr: WMM007 - Cwmystwyth Mine - The Mill Cwmystwyth Mine is considered to be one of the most important mining sites in Wales. The site has a long history from prehistoric times through to final closure around 1950. Mining on any scale had ceased in the later 1920s and the majority of men were paid off around 1930 and only caretakers kept on to maintain machinery and buildings and to deter thefts. Use of the mill probably ceased at this time but had probably only been intermittent through much of the 1920s. Production during 1930s was spasmodic and small - it seems to have been confined to hand-picking ore off the dumps. Activity ended around the start of World War II. It is believed that the mill machinery was scrapped immediately after the war. The mine being officially abandoned in 1950 though no real activity had taken place since the start of the war. It seems that the mill machinery was scrapped immediately after the war. Staff House (the Barracks) was part converted to a house and the remainder simply decayed. The last resident of Staff House moved out around 1950 after which decay speeded up. I visited the site in May 1984 when the barracks and the main mill building were still standing. Unfortunately they were demolished a few years later. My greatest regret was that I didn't take more photographs on that day! The site is now being conserved by the Cymystwyth Mines Trust. L2019_3972 Charlestown, Cornwall by John Luxton Via Flickr: The harbour village of Charlestown near St. Austell was a Georgian 'new town', a port development created by local landowner Charles Rashleigh (after whom it was named) and developed from the village of West Polmear between 1790 and 1810 for the export of copper and china clay. For more photographs of Charlestown please click here: www.jhluxton.com/England/Cornwall/Charlestown/ In 1994 Charlestown was bought by the charter sailing ship operator Square Sail who provide sailing vessels for charter and who work closely with TV and Film production companies. In October 2015 it was announced that the Square Sail business had been acquired by Atlantic Productions Ltd and will trade as Square Sail Ventures. The port continued to export china clay until around 2000. However, china clay exports came to an end due to the difficult approach to the harbour which restricted the size of vessels. However, long before mineral exports ceased the port had been discovered by film and TV production companies and has featured in countless drama series from the 1970s through to the present day. Many scenes have been shot at Charlestown for TV dramas including “The Onedin Line”; “Poldark” (1970s and current series); “Diana”; “Dr Who” and “Frenchman’s Creek”. Charlestown’s movie credits include “The Eagle Has Landed” and “Two Men Went to War”. in August 2018 the port was acquired by Luxe Ltd who have plans to further develop the potential of the site.

L2018_3039 - Brian - The Station Cat - Manx Electric Railway by John Luxton Via Flickr: "Brian" does not appear to actually belong to anyone. However, he has appointed himself the unofficial Derby Castle Station Cat and has been hanging around the station for some years. He can usually be seen around Derby Castle Station - the interchange between the Manx Electric Railway and the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway. Here he is waiting for the attention of visitors at the Terminus Tavern which is within the station area.
