SCY_0578 - Telephone Box and Lighthouse - Middle Town - St Agnes by John Luxton Via Flickr: A view towards St Agnes Lighthouse which dominates the heart of this Scillonian island. Today the lighthouse functions as a day mark having been replaced in 1911 by a new lighthouse at Peninnis on St Mary's. The lighthouse contrasts nicely with the GPO K6 phone box. Flickr: WMM007 - Cwmystwyth Mine - The Mill Cwmystwyth Mine is considered to be one of the most important mining sites in Wales. The site has a long history from prehistoric times through to final closure around 1950. Mining on any scale had ceased in the later 1920s and the majority of men were paid off around 1930 and only caretakers kept on to maintain machinery and buildings and to deter thefts. Use of the mill probably ceased at this time but had probably only been intermittent through much of the 1920s. Production during 1930s was spasmodic and small - it seems to have been confined to hand-picking ore off the dumps. Activity ended around the start of World War II. It is believed that the mill machinery was scrapped immediately after the war. The mine being officially abandoned in 1950 though no real activity had taken place since the start of the war. It seems that the mill machinery was scrapped immediately after the war. Staff House (the Barracks) was part converted to a house and the remainder simply decayed. The last resident of Staff House moved out around 1950 after which decay speeded up. I visited the site in May 1984 when the barracks and the main mill building were still standing. Unfortunately they were demolished a few years later. My greatest regret was that I didn't take more photographs on that day! The site is now being conserved by the Cymystwyth Mines Trust. For more details please go to: www.cambrianmines.co.uk/Cwmystwyth.htm I am grateful to "Garregfawr" on the Adit Now forum for providing with me with some additional information on this site. NGW0453 - Clogwyn Station - Snowdon Mountain Railway - 1994 by John Luxton Via Flickr: The Snowdon Mountain Railway is probably my least visited of the north Wales narrow gauge lines with only visits in 1966, 78, 94 and 2014 and as a consequence very photographs. However, with the line reopening to its full length in summer 2023 for the first time since 2019 it is on my list for a visit this year. In this view Hunslet 12 pauses at Clogwyn Station on April 30, 1994. On this early season operating day trains were only operating to Clogwyn as there was snow on the upper section of line leading to the summer station. In 1996 locomotive 12 was renamed GEORGE after the former Speaker of The House of Commons George Thomas, Viscount Tonypandy. This view looking up hill clearly shows the complex pointwork associated with the Abt Rack system. Camera: Contax RTSII + Carl Zeiss f1.7 50mm Planar lens For more Snowdon Mountain Railway Archive images please click here: www.jhluxton.com/The-35mm-Film-Archive/Railways/Snowdon-M...
