John Lloyd Young - Jukebox Hero With A Heart Of Soul
What is the best way to ring in a new decade?
You take a look back at the past decade with friends, give your all in the present moment, and give a taste of what’s ahead in the future.
John Lloyd Young did all of that at 54 Below - complete with special guests, vocal prowess, humor, style, and soul. And both the artists on stage and the members of the audience enjoyed every minute.
JLY started strong right out of the gate with “Lightning Strikes”...a song that would normally test anyone’s vocal abilities, yet he moved back and forth from baritone to falsetto several times effortlessly.  The second song, “Lady Willpower”, showed the strength of his voice and packs so much more emotion than the original, which was always a favorite.  JLY has that gift of making a song even better than before, giving it a fresh and current feel no matter when it originally came out. “Show and Tell” always feels new every time, and “Unchained Melody” has become so strong that the original doesn’t even compare to JLY’s version anymore - his stands on its own on a higher level.
He also includes a little bit of Broadway in this set, with “I Have Dreamed” from The King and I. It’s another special talent that he has - the ability to switch to different song styles and master all of them.  You can easily picture him back on Broadway, portraying any character he chooses, commanding the stage, and making the audience feel every emotion along with him.
Another gift that JLY possesses?  He really connects with his audience, through both the music and his stories. Both are essential qualities of a great cabaret performance - sharing your soul with people through both word and song.  And he also connects right from the stage, and when he goes around the room to sing “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me” and “Cara Mia”. There is no going through the motions or “phoning it in”, like some other performers do. No matter where you are sitting in the audience, you are involved in the show.
JLY also gives his award-winning musical director, Tommy Faragher, a chance to shine with a solo during each show, and Tommy rocked the house with “Bring It On Home”. And he also had some very special guests this week in NYC.
Renee Marino, who played Mary Delgado in the Jersey Boys movie, was JLY’s special guest for the entire run, and it was definitely special to have her on stage.  The two of them told stories about things that happened while they were working on set, with Clint Eastwood, with each other and the other actors, and more.  It was wonderful to get a glimpse of their lives while filming the movie.  They performed a duet together for us of “My Eyes Adored You”, and the true friendship they share shone through as they sang together.  Then Renee performed two solos - “You Don’t Own Me”, with just the right amounts of sweetness and sassiness, and “A House Is Not A Home”.  Many of us are used to hearing JLY perform the latter, which is also on his current CD.  Renee’s beautiful, wistful version of this song ranks right up there with his - both interpretations of this song make you feel every word and leave you near tears at the end.  Renee is also a powerful presence on stage, and I’m so glad we all got a chance to witness it. It was also wonderful to have Renee’s sweet family in the audience on the first evening I was there.
On the following evening, JLY and Renee were joined by another special guest - Johnny Cannizzaro, who played Tommy’s brother Nicky DeVito in the movie.  Johnny shared anecdotes from the set as well, and it was so much fun having all three of them on stage swapping stories with us.  Johnny also took Tommy’s seat at the piano for a few minutes, playing a little bit from Jesus Christ Superstar for us.  It was a nice surprise to learn of another one of his talents! Johnny’s mom was with him, and we all got to celebrate her birthday with her and sing to her.  Family is everything.
An original song was featured each night as well that JLY and Tommy wrote together.  Every night was a different song, and on the nights I was there, JLY performed “Till The Storm Is Done” and “Slow Dawn Calling”, respectively.  The first one has not been played often yet, but has evolved nicely over time with a more soulful feel.  The second is a favorite which is performed often at shows, and it also just keeps getting better.  We are all looking forward to hearing these songs on a new album, whenever it’s ready in the future.  And I can still definitely hear “Slow Dawn Calling” as a radio single.
JLY also performed some Jersey Boys songs for us, that he knows we love to hear.  “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” will always be a favorite, and nobody does it better.  He closed out the show with “Working My Way Back To You” and “Sherry”, leaving everyone on a high note.
This special set of shows was the perfect way to start 2020, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year - and the decade - bring.  I have faith that it will be as phenomenal as this beginning was.  Looking forward to what’s ahead!

I'm no Maya Angelou, but I wrote this back in 05. With the terrifying state of our world, it seems like an appropriate time to share & create something meaningful...Perhaps a small step in the right direction? The homeless on the sidewalk, they don’t get a second look. The hopeless souls with nothing but a holds on gods good book. The crime around the corner and the gangs that fill the streets. The poorest of the poor folk starving for a crumb to eat. We can save the homeless if our hearts will lead the way. We can save the hopeless by giving hope this very day. We can stop the violence if we give hate a reprieve. The poor will gain the riches if we help them to believe. Let’s hope for future kindness and peace throughout the land, And with our fellow brothers and sisters helping hand, We can take our daydreams and turn them into blue, A ocean full of visions, sights set for me and you. If we work together, just like a trusted team, We’ll see what we’ve accomplished was more then just a dream. Smiles on our faces, new outlooks on life's lease. Hearts are filled with warmness and universal peace. Peace and Love, the keys to life, to live in peace and not in strife. To love ourselves and love our own, To live as ONE, yet ne’er alone. To lift one up when one is down. To bring ones smile from ones frown. To spread ones love when least expected, And marvel at ones life affected. To give a little means so much, To people in the lives you'll touch. Not with money, bread or wine. A little kindness does just fine. With love, there is no greater force, To lead us this unsteady course. Then guide our spirits to the sky, And view it all from heavens eye. It’s time for peace to spread the land, Just lift your head and take my hand. Let your kindness overcome, It’s in us all, just join the humm. It’s time for peace to spread the land. From oceans shore to desert sand. From highest mountain, lowest plain, The deepest canyon, stop the pain. Let your kindness start the peace. Let your kindness never cease. We the people of this land will always pray for peace. This little flame of orange hue is the show of peace I give to you. To represent the hope we need, To let it burn till we succeed. It’s now your turn to stake your claim, To not get burned but spread the flame. And spread it far and spread it wide, and spread it like our fathers cried. Spread up and down and side to side, till evil and the hate subside. Let your kindness start the peace. Let your kindness never cease. We the people of this land will always pray for peace.

The first time I met Mr. Walken was while staging the Finale number in Jersey Boys. I was placed right next to him and got to watch his genius at work. He's such an interesting person who you could listen to and talk to for days. In the final scene, I have to open the car door for him and got to sit in the back of a 1957 Cadillac with him for close to an hour in between set ups. Definitely an experience I will not forget!

One of my scenes was day 1 of shooting and “Jersey Boys” was my first feature film! I was absolutely terrified but learned very quickly there was no time to be nervous when you’re working on a film of this caliber. CE moves very quickly, he knows what he wants and you’re expected to deliver. The most memorable moment for me was on that first day when he let Vincent, Michael, JLY and I improvise the hell out of the backstage dressing room scene. At one point, we even wrestled to the floor. I don’t know if any of it made the final cut but it was amazing to have that kind of freedom!
