Chapter 1- The Age of Chivalry

~~~~~~~
October 1943
It was never a good idea to mix a single female with a Company of deprived men in the Army...but here you are. You found out you were assigned to Easy Company 2nd Battalion 101st Airborne Division in Fall 1943 when they lost one of their medics to an injury. Although you trained separately from the males at Toccoa in the Divisional medical unit and were one of very few females allowed to work alongside men, you got along quite well with most of the guys. You held your own never asking for special treatment or never played the ‘damsel in distress’ card, so Easy Company learned rather quickly that you can keep up.
~~~~~~~
You remember the day you arrived at Aldbourne, England to make contact with the boys of Easy Company. With your reassignment order in hand, you approach a group of soldiers sitting at a picnic bench outside a building. All of them looking a bit rough, but nonetheless smoking and joking with eachother. They take a pause as they notice you approaching them. Some of them sizing you up and down as you carry your duffel full of medical supplies and wearing fatigues that have yet to see the battlefields like theirs have.
“Hey, you lost there, lady?” Private Roy Cobb called out to you, sizing you up again as you continued to walk towards them without faltering.
You shoot the mouthy Private a look of disdain before responding.
“I’m looking for Corporal Roe. I was told to make contact with him as soon I arrived.” You speak to the group as a whole.
They all exchanged looks and a few whispers.
Corporal George Luz stood up.
“Why, I’m Eugene Roe. But around here they call me, ‘Doc.’” He declared confidently with a cocky grin.
The others started to snicker. One laid a heavy pat on his shoulder showing his appreciation of the joke.
You rolled your eyes, releasing an exasperated sigh.
Sergeant Denver Randleman stood from the bench, then walked towards you pushing Luz aside shaking his head as he passed him. He was a larger man. Like a bear. Never removing the cigar hanging out of the corner of his mouth as he spoke to you.
“He’s across the way this way, I’ll take ya to him.” He said, motioning you along in the opposite direction.
“Thank you, Sergeant.” You reply.
“No problem. And it’s just ‘Bull,’ ma’am.” He said politely in his thick Southern accent as he passed you leading the way.
You turn on your heel and proceed to follow Bull, ignoring the distant whistles you heard from some of the men you just met behind you.
~~~~~~~
“I hope the guys haven’t given you too much trouble so far?” stated the actual Eugene ‘Doc’ Roe when you crossed into the designated aid station.
“Nothing I haven’t dealt with before, Doc.” You say with conviction.
Bull chuckled, finding your response amusing.
“Yeah, I bet.” Doc replied before continuing.
“Well, let’s get you in processed here, and squared away. Thanks for bringing her here, Bull. I’m sure those other idiots would’ve just sent her to their barracks.” he said with a roll of his eyes.
Bull nodded with a small wave.
“See you at chow, L/N.” Bull called back to you before he left.
When Bull returned to where the others were still gathered, they bombarded him with questions.
“Did you catch her name??” Sergeant (Sgt) Don Malarkey prodded.
“-is she coming to Easy Company??” Sgt Bill Guarnere interrupted before Bull could answer.
“-did she say anything about me?” Luz questioned.
As the interrogation got heavier, he threw his hands up and removed the cigar from his mouth.
“GUYS!! Take it easy, will ya? You’ll see her later at chow, just don’t attack her with all of these questions right away, k? We don’t want to scare her off now, do we?” He explained as he replaced his cigar and walked away.
They all swapped looks of excitement.
“Well, I don’t know about you guys, but I’m going to have me a shower before dinner this evening.” Corporal Joe Liebgott stated while flicking his cigarette butt, rising from the picnic bench, shouldering his rifle.
Tumblr media
“Ok, Liebgott, like you have a shot.” Malarkey teased.
Liebgott turned to him.
“Oh contrare, I feel you underestimate me, Don.” He shot back at Malarkey while walking backwards, then turning back around.
The group scoffed at him collectively.
~~~~~~~
You got to chow early before any of the other men started to show up. You tucked yourself way in the back at a long table in the corner. You made sure to keep your head down, hanging over a tray trying to swallow some of the Army’s finest slop.
“Should’ve just stuck to a dinner roll with margarine.” You whispered to yourself as you grimaced from the last mouthful of mystery meat from your plate.
“Not exactly a high-end dish from The Ritz, now, is it?” Sgt Carwood Lipton joked as he sat down across from you with his own serving of slop.
“Yeah, not quite.” You respond while poking at a hard, clay-like mound on your plate that was supposed to be mashed potatoes.
“You’ll get used to it.” Bull stated as he sat next to you with his tray.
You ‘psh-ed’ at Bull’s statement.
“I highly doubt that. But I’ll make do.” You convinced yourself. “Surprisingly not the worst food I’ve had.” You added.
“Really, there’s something out there worse than this?” Lipton asked astonished as he stirred his cold soup that looked like ketchup and water.
“Oh yeah! Pixley and Ehler’s Diner on Clark Street in Chicago has some questionable selections.” You explained.
“Is that where you’re from?” Corporal Frank Perconte queried as he sat next to Lipton.
“I am.” You replied with pride.
“You Italian then?” Guarnere asked, inviting himself to the conversation, sitting next to Perconte.
“Italian and Irish.” You clarified.
“Ssshh, a goddam Mick-Deigo.” Guarnere sneered crinkling his nose in disgust.
“Leave’er alone, Gonorrhea.” Liebgott interjected sitting next to Bull.
“I’m guessing you're Italian?” You directed at Guarnere.
“Sicilian, actually.” He retorted.
“Hm, you know that Sicilians aren’t real Italians, right? Sicily is just like Australia. All the criminals of Britain were shipped there to be ostracized from the mainland. Sicily is just an island of Italy’s delinquents.” You taunted.
The others “ooooo-ed” in unison. Even Perconte who was the other Italian of Easy company.
“She got you there, Guarnere.” Bull teased.
Everyone laughed. Except Guarnere.
“You think you’re funny?” Guarnere challenged.
You sighed and looked at him deadpan in the face without an ounce of fear to show.
“Come on, Guarnere, she was only dishing out what you gave her.” Perconte defended.
“Shut your trap, Perconte, you should be on my side!” he said slamming a fist onto the surface of the table then pointing at him.
The rest of the table filled up with remaining members of Easy Company that could fit that wanted to see the fight unfold.
You folded your arms in front of you on top of the table and leaned forward, making sure you got Guarnere’s attention, then spoke with distinct fire in your voice.
“You think I’m some dame just showing up here straight out of basic training not knowing how to handle myself with soldiers? I’ve been whistled at, barked at, howled at, catcalled, pinched, ass slapped, and manhandled by the worst of them, pal. You labeling me because of my heritage ain’t gonna do shit to me. But I’ll be damned you disrespect me like I haven’t earned the right to be respected. Just remember, I’m the one that’s going to be tending to you if you get shot in the field, sergeant.”
You glare at him, then rise harshly from your seat, leaving the rest of the table in a state of awe and shock.
“Good job, Gonorrhea. You pissed her off now.” Liebgott pointed out with an audible tsk.
“Fuck her.” Guarnere spit back.
~~~~~~~
As soon as you left the chow hall, you found a spot out of sight to catch your breath and slow your heart rate. You leaned against a post looking up towards the night sky taking deep controlled breaths.
“Corporal L/N?” You’re startled by the voice of Lieutenant (LT) Richard Winters. You snap to attention ready to render a salute, but he waves you down.
“As you were. Are you alright?” He asked as you relaxed your stance.
“Yessir, just getting some fresh air.” You reassured.
He looked at you with skepticism, not believing you were telling him the entire truth.
You continued.
“A room full of men who haven’t showered in a few days can make a gal lightheaded.” You joked.
The corner of LT Winters’ mouth started to curl into a slight grin, trying his best not to laugh outloud at your quick wit.
“I see, L/N. Well rest up, we’ll need you to be ready when we move out for the next mission.” He explained.
“Yes, sir. Have a good night.” You replied.
Winters gave a nod and entered the chow hall.
LT Winters bee lined for his company’s table. His men all greeted him cheerfully as he approached the table.
“Lieutenant, got a seat open right here.” Bull called out, gesturing to your vacant spot.
“No thanks, Bull, I’ve eaten already.” Winters responded. He paused before he continued.
“Just ran into Corporal L/N on the way in-” He paused again to assess the men’s reaction.
Some continued eating, pretending like they hadn’t really heard. Lipton, Bull and Liebgott looked up at Winters waiting for him to continue.
“She seemed somewhat troubled.” Winters finished. He waited for anyone to speak up, looking at the group expectantly.
“Maybe her panties got all up in a twist, sir.” Guarnere offered up sarcastically.
Some of the men chortled in response.
Winters, Bull, Lipton, and Liebgott weren’t amused.
“Well, she only said a room full of foul-smelling males made her dizzy and she needed fresh air.” Winters relayed, while looking at Guarnere suspiciously.
Tumblr media
The men all started to smell their armpits self-consciously.
“Corporal Liebgott.” Winters called out.
“Sir?”
“Get out there and escort L/N to her tent.” Winters instructed.
“Yes, sir.” Liebgott acknowledged.
“L/N will not walk around alone at night, gentlemen. I don’t care who goes with her, but make sure she always has a battle buddy in the hours of darkness. Tracking?” Winters asked, raising his voice authoritatively.
The table responded “yes, sir” simultaneously.
Liebgott rushed out excitedly and hustled down the street to catch you before you got too far.
~~~~~~~
You were aways a bit ahead before Liebgott found you.
“Hey, L/N! Wait up!” He called after you.
You turned around looking for the voice calling your name.
You stopped walking, waiting for Liebgott trotting over to catch up to you.
“Can I help you?” You asked with a little more harshness in your voice than you intended.
“As a matter of fact, I’m here to help you. I have the honor of accompanying you to your barracks.” He responded with enthusiasm and a smile.
You were taken aback. You raised an eyebrow at him.
“Oh?” You questioned before continuing. “That’s quite unexpectedly chivalrous of you.”
“Well, you have Winters to thank for that, it was his idea.” He responded quite bluntly.
You rolled your eyes.
“Hm, I see.” You reply briskly.
Liebgott realized he sounded like an asshole right then.
“Of course, if you approve, I’ll appoint myself your permanent battle buddy from now on.” He extended with his signature smirk as you resumed walking together.
You felt your face heat up. You averted your eyes to the ground so he wouldn’t see you blush. But Joseph Liebgott doesn’t miss a thing. He grinned wider.
“If those are the LT’s orders, then have at it, Liebgott.” You replied coldly.
“Nah, that last part was my idea.” He stated proudly.
You shot him a confused expression, then he winked at you.
You laughed nervously, looking away quickly to break the awkwardness you felt in the pit of your stomach.
He smiled at you affectionately.
“And call me Joe.” He added.
“Y/N.” You reply looking up at him through your lashes.
“Look, sorry if I’m making it weird. And don’t listen to Gonorrhea. He’s just a jackass with a height deficiency. The kid always has some stupid shit to say.” He explained.
You nod trying to suppress a giggle.
“This is me.” You announce as you approach the entrance to your sleeping quarters. You turn to face Joe. “Thank you for the chat, and the company, Liebgott…I mean Joe.” You say dotingly.
“Forget it. So?” He asked.
You were genuinely confused.
“Sooo?” You reply.
“Am I your permanent evening escort?” he asked with a grin and a wink.
This time you laugh outwardly at his attempt at a flirty sexual inuendo.
“If by ‘evening escort’ you mean my nightly walk to and from one location to another, I’d have to say....I’ll think about it.” You respond flirtatiously with a wink in return.
His face lit up.
“Well alright then. We’ll take another test run tomorrow night.” He proposed.
You shook your head smiling, astounded by the level of confidence this man had.
“Good night, Joe.” You finalized as you disappear beyond the threshold of the tent entrance.

Shifty Powers x OFC
Chapter Three: Brother in Three Languages
Taglist: @latibvles @liebgotts-lovergirl
Summary: Routine may be her downfall after all.
Warnings: mentions of improper chest binding and menstruation, mentions of sickness, and like one cuss word
A/N: *cracks knuckles* Okay folks, settle in for a caveat.
If you've read my one shots in the past, then you know that I'm simply here for a good time, not a 100% historically accurate time. I've never seen a specific mention of exactly which tribe Shifty's family was from, but based on the area that he's from, and the fact that there are people on the Miller Roll with his father's last name and his mother's maiden name, we're gonna make an educated guess and say that they were from the Cherokee tribe for the purposes of this story :)
Also when I tell you that this is a slow burn, I mean sloooooow, so buckle up for miscommunications and all the other fun stuff that comes from having an emotionally illiterate MC
Besides that, as per the usual, this is based on the fictional depictions of from the show - no disrespect to the real life veterans! 💕🕊️

Toccoa, 1942
Finding someone like her was not something that Zenie expected when she imagined running away and joining up. Keeping her distance from the others, maintaining a few polite relations so that she didn’t stick out too much, doing well in her training, but not too well – that had been the plan. Becoming friends with an NCO and his close circle of friends had been a welcome surprise. And befriending Shifty is the kind of surprise that sends a little thrill through her chest. Which has never happened before, but she’s so shocked that she found someone like her – someone who gets it – that she starts to enjoy the way that the sight of him entering a room makes her heart speed up and the way that she can smile so easily around him.
For a plan that relied so much on acting, Zenie feels nothing but natural when she and Shifty spend time together. And considering that so much of her plan relied on lying, most of what she tells Shifty about her life is the truth.
No one has ever understood her in this way before. Not even Bobby, and especially not Beckie. Zenie tells him about her father, the stern son of Irish immigrants, and Mama, the beautiful Cherokee woman who gave Zenie her dark hair and eyes. Then there’s Matthew, who, even though he was adopted, was the best older brother she could have asked for, and Marilyn, the fashionable older sister. It’s nice to talk to someone who knows what her family is like. Comforting, even. Especially when their conversations turn towards the mountains and what it’s like to grow up in the hollows of Appalachia.
Someone finally feels the way that Zenie does about so many things. All those times that she spent feeling lonely in her room, feeling as if her own life were suffocating her, wondering if there was more to the world, and if there was a place where she belonged in it – they all feel like a distant memory now. Since arriving in Toccoa, she has never asked herself those same forlorn questions and has never felt that hollow ache in her chest. She doesn’t have to, because her questions have been answered.
There is a place where she feels like she belongs. There are people who understand her. There is more to life than working at the diner and cleaning the house.
But that life is for Thomas. Would it still be open to her if she had entered this new world as Zenie?
Tumblr media
Time flies by with only occasional letters from Bobby to remind her of the life she left behind and the turning of the leaves to signal the change in season. Most of Toccoa’s days are marked with memories – funny things that Luz has said, runs where she beats Toye up Currahee on their runs.
Of course, Zenie has changed, just like the leaves. Mentally, yes, but physically too as she grows stronger, her muscles more toned, faster. She likes these changes. Aside from the extra weight on her chest, she feels like she has nothing to hide – if not for her carefully bound breasts, she would be free to show of her physique like her friends. And certain other changes have certainly come in handy; she finds herself thanking a God that she’s not sure she believes in when her menstrual cycle ceases due to the rigorous training and stress of life at Camp Toccoa.
The health sponges she managed to shove into her mattress to avoid detection during inspections become one less thing to worry about. Every other aspect of maintaining her identity still causes a fresh wave of panic to roll over her at a moment’s notice, though.
Routine, she thought when she first arrived at the camp, would be her savior. She manages to shower after everyone else. She finds excuses to visit the latrine at different times. She tries not to stiffen when her friends give her a slap on the back after running Currahee, hoping that they won’t feel the bandages beneath her PT clothes, and that they’ll attribute her labored breathing to her shorter legs making her work harder to keep up with them, instead of the fabric pinching her ribs suffocating her. In the mornings, she’s up bright and early to sneak off, bandage her chest, and change clothes before anyone can notice that anything is amiss.
Except people are noticing.
“You performance shy or somethin’?”
Zenie pauses, the door of the barracks half closed behind her, allowing a slat of early morning sunlight to cut through the long room, helping to wake the rest of Easy Company as they slide out of their bunks and begin their day. She clicks the door shut before turning to the man standing by one of the first bunks, staring at her with curious eyes that she could swear see right through her disguise.
“What?”
Joseph Liebgott only shrugs. Brown eyes flick up and down over her, like a light switch flipping. “You’re up before everyone else, and you never change in the barracks. Not sure I’ve ever seen you in the showers, but you’re always clean . . .”
Zenie lets out a half-hearted laugh, feeling like she’s choking on it as more men turn their attention to her. “Why are you lookin’ for me in the showers, Lieb?”
A few snorts from those nearby and a blush running across Liebgott’s face allow Zenie to escape relatively unscathed. Routine may be her downfall after all.
She tries to be careful – even more careful – after that. The only other time that someone gives her so much as a raised eyebrow or a questioning glance comes from Shifty, of all people.
It happens on a Saturday. He, Zenie, and Bill are sprawled between the beds and the small tables between them, abandoning their half-hearted game of cards to reminisce about their past lives and rant about Sobel – who’s the entire reason they’re even in the barracks instead of out on the town with everyone else. Damned weekend passes.
At some point in the conversation, they realize that they all have a real talent for languages. Bill knows Italian, and Shifty and Zenie both speak Cherokee. The languages of their ancestors start to pepper themselves into the conversation as they talk about home – that natural association between home as a place and language as the thing that makes it feel like home to begin with.
Bill is convinced that being able to speak to each other in combat without other people being able to understand them could be helpful at some point. Their own secret code. When it happens, he’s trying to teach them Italian, and they’re trying to teach him Cherokee.
He flips a card between his fingers. “Here’s a good one: Fratellino.” He gestures towards Zenie when he says it. When she raises her eyebrows and shakes her head, he taps the card against the table. “Little brother. Tu sei il mio fratellino.”
“You are my little brother,” she guesses. She should have been able to guess that one, based on how often Bill refers to her as the little brother of the group. One time after PT when they were roughhousing, she overheard Lieutenant Nixon tell Lieutenant Winters that he was going to start calling her Thomas Guarnere because of how close she stuck to her friend.
“You got a brother, don’t ya?” Bill tilts his head. “You don’t talk about home as much as the rest of us. Or as fondly, at least.”
She nods, a lump in her throat and words from one of Bobby’s letters flashing across her memory. Saw your parents yesterday. Your brother was home on leave – first time since you left. He seemed real worried about you.
“Yeah. Matthew.”
“How would you say that he’s your brother?”
“In Tsalagi or Italian?”
He shrugs. “Either one.”
“Matthew è mio fratello, for you. But I would say Matthew agido’i.”
It happens so quickly that she can’t even be sure it actually occurred. Later, she’s convinced that she imagined it, but she could swear that Shifty stiffens beside her, that his eyebrows furrow slightly as he throws her a confused glance. Before anything more can happen, Bill smiles at her.
“Matteo, in Italian, but you’re right! Geez Tommy, you’re good at this. Maybe we outta send you into intelligence with Lieutenant Nixon.”
Whatever reason for pause that she gave Shifty, Bill doesn’t seem to notice it. Shifty never brings it up, never casts her another curious look, so she doesn’t press the issue. And she tries not to question why her friend’s glance makes her feel like there are butterflies in her chest.
Tumblr media
It all happens so unexpectedly that she thinks she now knows how Icarus felt the minute that the wax melted off his wings and he started to plummet back to Earth.
“You know, next time I see the dear ol’ Captain, I may just have to fall at his feet and thank him,” Luz chirps over the sounds of the crowded mess hall.
“That’s probably just what he wants,” Toye says. “Maybe he finally got the hint that nobody likes him. He’s just trying to get on our good sides.”
Luz pushes his garlic bread through the spaghetti sauce on his plate, his usual smile even brighter than usual. “Spaghetti and afternoon lectures indoors? I would say that it’s working, my friend.”
It’s clever, actually. Sobel can’t appeal to them sensitively like Lieutenant Winters can, so he’s decided to appeal to them through their appetites instead. After all, everyone knows that the fastest way to men’s hearts is through their stomachs.
Maybe the same can be said for Zenie. The sounds of silverware scraping against plates and laughter come together to form a symphony of camaraderie that elevates the spirits of the mess hall. She’s half focused on her spaghetti, and half focused on casually knocking against Toye every so often as they jokingly fight over a piece of extra garlic bread. Still, something holds her back from fully releasing herself to the good mood that everyone else is swept up in. In her world, benevolent acts from tyrants usually aren’t without some sort of price. Even if Sobel isn’t intentionally expecting them to pay some sort of price for today’s uncharacteristically kind gesture – which she seriously doubts – she wouldn’t be surprised if they all somehow unintentionally got food poisoning, just so the universe could balance out the score once more.
A forkful of noodles is halfway to her mouth when Guarnere jostles her from behind as he takes a seat at the next table, squeezing in beside Perconte as the other Italian comments on the quality of the food.
“Oh come on, Gonorrhea! As a fellow Italian, you should know that callin’ this crap spaghetti is a mortal sin!” Perconte insists above the din.
A few people down the bench from her, another paratrooper turns and makes a grab for Perconte’s plate. “If you don’t want it, I’ll have it.”
“No, no, no, I’m eatin’ here!” A sharp elbow to the ribs nudges the paratrooper back into his seat.
Bill jabs his own elbow at him. “Hey, get outta here!”
All the jostling is just enough to loosen Zenie’s grip on her garlic bread. Toye laughs as he takes it, shoving it into his mouth before she can protest. On both the old instinct of being the youngest sibling and her new instinct of reacting the way a boy would, she’s about to shove him and call him a dirty name, but the shrill scream of a whistle cuts her off.
Loud footsteps and long strides usher Captain Sobel into the mess hall. “Orders have changed! Get up!”
Silverware clatters and all the joking voices from a moment before fizzle out, like water dropped on hot cement – there one second, gone without a trace the next.
“Lectures are cancelled!” Captain Sobel bellows as he strides down the path between the tables. “Easy Company is running up Currahee!” Everyone collectively hangs their heads or grimaces, but no one dares make even so much as an audible sigh.  “Move! Move!”
The sudden orders leave no room for routines or careful planning. They leave her absolutely nowhere to hide. Her stomach has turned into an ocean caught in the middle of a hurricane – the kind of storm that takes people’s livelihoods and leaves no survivors. Never in all her time at Toccoa has Zenie felt genuine fear course through her veins. Not during combat training. Not during her interactions with the other men. Not the thought of jumping out of a plane. But there’s a first time for everything.
Captain Sobel’s cries of “Three miles up! Three miles down! Hi ho Silver!” feel like taunts aimed directly at her.
Luckily, Zenie is wearing her white PT shirt under her ODs. Everyone is in such a rush that she hopes the rest of the company will change and be out the door before her. She can always catch up to them as they head to the base of the mountain. But her friends are determined that no man should be left behind.
“Come on Tommy!” Guarnere urges as Zenie steps behind her bunk and faces the wall, trying to slide into her shorts as quickly as she can. People are rushing by her so quickly that no one seems to notice that her proportions are different than their own.
The next thing that she knows, she and her friends are packed together, elbows knocking into each other as they join the rest of the company. Usually there’s more space to run, but everyone seems determined to stick close together, not wanting to risk being left behind.
Despite how close they all are, Sobel somehow manages to squeeze in between them, throwing taunts and insults at them between the sounds of all the retching, wheezing, and puke splattering on the trail.
“You’re a washout Private Hoobler! Looks like Gordon’s gone! Aren’t you Gordon?” Zenie feels his presence over her shoulder just as a wave of nausea rolls over her, causing her to stumble slightly as her stomach jolts. Stars dance across her vision as the bandages pinch her ribs, never letting her lungs expand enough to get the air they so desperately crave. “Private Driver is too short to keep up on a good day, and look at him now! If you struggle this much in Georgia, how do you expect to keep up in Germany?”
Just like some of the other men, she could puke. If she times it correctly, maybe she could make sure it hits Sobel’s shoes. That would teach him a lesson.
A few men ahead of her, Luz’s voice rings out. “We fall upon the risers, we fall upon the grass!”
“We never land upon our feet, we always hit our ass!” The rest of the company joins in. It’s not like the good time crowd back in the mess hall only moments ago, but it’s amazing how one can feel the spirit of camaraderie unite them as they join in the song, pumping their arms and legs with renewed vigor as they scale the mountain.
Zenie chokes down bile and joins in as she pushes past Sobel. “Heidy deidy, Christ Almighty, who the hell are we?”
By some miracle, the song carries her the rest of the way up Currahee, and then another miracle brings her back down the mountain without losing her lunch or falling on her face – both things that she has to concentrate on harder than ever. Everyone is so exhausted by the time they reach the base of the mountain that no one notices Zenie as she stumbles off towards the latrine.
She doesn’t quite make it. Instead, her legs give out behind one of the bunk houses and she collapses there, balancing on her knees and one hand and she tries to loosen her bandages through her shirt. The wood of the building is surprisingly cool as she leans her forehead against it, hiding herself away from the rest of the world of men as she works through her own body betraying her.
A few times, late at night while staring at the ceiling, she finds herself worrying about being shot and the medics and nurses discovering her secret as they try to save her. She didn’t expect to find herself feeling like death while still in camp – and she definitely doesn’t expect the soft hand on her back that starts to rub soothing circles as she tries to catch her breath.
She recoils from the touch, but there’s no way that whoever has appeared behind her hasn’t noticed the bandages. There’s nothing she can do about that, except maybe try to explain it away when she manages to breathe without seeing entire constellations again. What’s one more lie at this point?
The person behind her continues rubbing circles on her back. “Here,” a soft voice says, gently pressing something familiar into one of her hands. “Will this help?”
Between her gasps and the churning sensation in her stomach, Zenie feels hot tears prick at her eyes as she accepts what he hands her without a fight.
That’s the moment that she knows she’s been found out: the minute she realizes that someone has just handed her a health sponge.

"There you are! You piece of shit!" She was furious. "You! Get out of here! Now!" She talked to the girl.
"Mary, I understand what you feeling..." Lieb started to talk.
"Shut up! Shut the fuck up! I don't want to hear your fucking voice! I loved you. I was marry you, you little shit!"
Mary was screaming. It was in this moment that Bill arrived in the room.
"Mary please! I need you make silence. You are screaming and any officer can show up in here." He begged, looking at Lieb.
"She didn't deserve this. You cheated on her!" He said.
Winters and Nixon really appeared, and Lew knew that him needed to punish Mary, but Dick first met the girl paratrooper since Toccoa and then he asked to her not be punished.
Lew agreed and only Liebgott was punished. He accepted, but his major punishment was lose his fianceé, cause Mary broken up with him.
"The man who asked to me 'Mary Corleone, will you marry me?' " Mary said.
"Fucked Babe. I'd say to you. I'd talk with you..." Lieb tried explain himself.
"Fuck you! Never, never talk to me again!"

Mary and Bill approached during Bastogne, and lie watched from afar, without being able to do anything. The girl was in a foxhole with Floyd Talbert when she saw Bill Guarnere running in the snow.
"What the hell he's doing?! Bill! Stay in your foxhole!" She screamed, but it was in vain.
A few minutes later, Buck Compton was calling a medic and took off his helmet. Bill Guarnere and Joe Toye had lost each one of their legs.
Mary fell in her tears and ran away, clinging to the gurney that arrived Bill to the rescue.
"Bill, I told for you stay in there, in safe! Now you will go and you will left me alone!"
"Don't cry, sweetheart. You've all the Easy here with you. I'm fine."
And they said goodbye. Lieb saw Mary devastated and crying a lot, but he couldn't go there and comfort her. And he suffered to see her suffer, even from afar in silence.
And from afar, Leigh saw Bill Guarnere, whom she has always secretly loved, leave on that gurney.
~
Mary was talking with Floyd, Luz, Perconte, Chuck and Babe. She has received leave from Winters to go to see Bill, who was in a hospital in Scotland, and now she had returned with great news.
"Wow! It's our girl paratrooper, that had returned from her travel!" Grant saluted Mary.
"Chuck! I was missing you! Bill send greetings for you all and he said that him misses you!"
"And then? Are you finally going to assume what you feel from each other?" Johnny Martin approached.
"Johnny!" Mary hugged him. "And yes. I've news from everyone! Sit down, please."
They laughed cause they already imagined what would have happened. Mary leaned against the table and smiled.
"Bill asked me to marry him and I accepted. As soon as the war is over, we'll get married!"
There was a party among the boys. Suddenly someone knocked on the door.
"Excuse me. I'm Leigh Spencer, from I Company. Lt Speirs send me called Floyd Talbert."
"Go, Tab. Tell the news to Winters and Nixon!" She encouraged him.
As soon as they left the room, Leigh asked Talbert why he was so happy.
"Isn't that girl Bill Guarnere's girlfriend?"
"Yes! She went to see him in Scotland and he asked her to marry him. Soon we will have candies!"
Leigh felt heartbroken. She and Bill met as soon as the bot arrived in Toccoa, and when she didn't know how to shoot, he taught her.
Leigh saw Sobel push each of the paratrooper too far, pushing them to the limits of their strength.
Leigh felt sorry for Bill evert time she had weekends off and he stayed in there, running Currahee.
And now she could never tell him how much she loves him, cause Bill was get married.
Next chapter is coming soon. Currahee!
@msmercury84 Guess I heard of you that Bill went to a hospital in Scotland. Am I right?

I was born in Chicago. My mother was born in Groningen, Netherlands, and my father in Antwerp, Belgium. I was the oldest child, and after me, my parents had five others. Despite having six kids, we were all taught Dutch and German from a young age. The sole reason I was accepted into the military was because of me being trilingual, I’ll forever be grateful to my parents for teaching me their languages.
February 9, 1945
Easy Company was on its way to France. We were stationed in Haguenau, which had been taken by the Allies in December. Honestly speaking, I didn’t really know what to expect when we got there. I was sitting in the back of a truck, squished between Babe and Liebgott. Joe had become a close friend way back in Toccoa when he’d fallen running up Currahee, and I stopped and helped him up. We both had our 48-hour weekend passes revoked, but we made the most of it that weekend together. After that, we’d spend our weekend passes together and hang out.
I was leaning against Joe as I’d been almost the whole ride, his arm slung around my shoulders as I read a book that I had found when we invaded Foy. It seemed the Krauts enjoyed good literature as I was reading For Whom the Bell Tolls in German. I was a translator for Easy Company, being able to speak English, German and Dutch, I was a heavy asset to the team. It was a beautifully told story about the Civil War that had some romance aspects while also being brutal. I finished the book twice, and now I was reading it a third time.
“Jesus doll, I think I’ve seen you read that damn book about forty times now. How good can it be?” Joe said when he noticed my attention had strayed.
“Oh it’s a beautifully told story, Joe. Although, I don’t think you could read anything that didn’t have pictures.” I replied jokingly to him, looking up at him from where I was leaning against him. I could hear Babe and Malarkey laughing, and a young soldier, Jackson watching intently.
“How can you read that, (L/n)?” A quiet voice asked in front of me. It’d been from Jackson. He lied on his documents so that made him 20 right now while I, at 23, was considered young.
“I can speak and read German. Although my mother is a Dutch immigrant, my father was a Belgium immigrant.” I spoke honestly. Picking up languages was a bit of a gift for me. I’d always been good at remembering and learning languages, probably since I was taught three languages at once from a young age.
“(Y/n)! I’ve read that book! It’s so beautifully written.” A new voice spoke from the opening in the back of the truck, I quickly jolted from Joe’s shoulder, as he groaned from lack of contact, to see who the familiar voice belonged to.
“David Webster? Where the hell have you been?” I interrogated, while simultaneously giving him a toothy smile. He blushed slightly while asking Jackson for a hand to get up on the truck and suddenly Joe spoke up sharply,
“The hospital. Must’ve liked that hospital Webster, cause uh, we left Holland four months ago.” After saying that he gave Web a dismissive look while tightening his hold on my shoulders. Suddenly, I felt very awkward, and slightly bad for Web - the war was tough and it was understandable to be afraid, it just wasn’t fair that some men snuck out only to get killed or injured more severely than the first time. They started going back and forth, jabbing at Webster passively, although it didn’t seem to be because they didn’t like him, they were just tired and upset. I gave Web a smile before getting off the truck, following Joe close behind.
“Y’know, you didn’t have to be so mean to Web.” I said calmly, making sure to not seem mad at Joe as to not have him get defensive.
“I guess, but it’s bullshit that we had men come back just to get killed.” He said quickly. When he said that, I saw Lieutenant Lipton sluggishly walking towards a building. The poor man had a bad case of Pneumonia, so I ran over and put his arm under my shoulders to help him. As I did that, explosions rang over our head and fell a little farther than we were. He gave me a smile and I helped him into the building he was walking towards. It was pretty on the inside, Luz and Captain Speirs were in the room along with Webster walking in.
“Hey look who it is. Nice digs, huh, Lip? (Y/n)?” Luz said to me and Lipton as I helped Lipton situate himself on the couch.
“Yeah.” Lipton called back, unenthusiastically and coughed slightly after.
George came over with a blanket and put it on Lipton. He had a lit cigarette in his mouth, so I took it out and took a long drag from it.
“Hey what gives (Y/n). Just ‘cause you’re a pretty dame with a nice rack doesn’t mean you can steal my cigs.” He said while laughing, only partly joking. I gave him a look and replied,
“You’re just mad, this is all you get to see of my ‘nice’ rack.”
He laughed and replied with a ‘you bet’. As he said that, a new voice spoke up, mock confident.
“Ahem. Is this the company CP for Easy?” He asked, looking at me and Luz weirdly before I went to get Lip a cup of hot coffee.
From the kitchen, I could vaguely hear that he called himself Lieutenant Jones and that he was asking for Captain Speirs. I came out with a coffee for Lipton as Speirs was drilling him about going to the back to sack out and rest. I noticed Jones had stood up when Speirs walked in.
“Christ Captain, give him a break. He’s got Pneumonia!” I told Speirs as I handed Lipton his coffee and gave him a squeeze on his shoulder. Lipton thanked me with a small smile as the new guy looked at me with an expression I couldn’t decipher.
“Hello to you Ms. (L/n). If he doesn’t rest up though, that Pneumonia won’t go away.” He said pointedly at Lipton.
“I’m sorry, are you a field nurse? I didn’t think they let field nurses come this close to action.” Jones asked me, even though he wasn’t asking with any malicious intent, and it was all curiosity, I still got upset.
“Why d’ya think I’m a field nurse? I’m literally in uniform.” I deadpanned at him while giving him a little attitude for automatically assuming I’d be a field nurse just because I was a woman.
“Oh. I’m sorry, truly I was just curious. I didn't mean any offense, I just didn’t know they let women become paratroopers.” He said quickly, face turning slightly red.
“They don’t. (Y/n) here has some insane stamina, and she’s a helluva shot!” Webster spoke up for me, and I threw him a smile.
“Oh gee, Shifty’s got a better shot than I’d ever dream of having.” I replied, giving credit to Shifty, as he did have a better shot and he was just the sweetest man alive. At that, Winters walked in and told us he’d need fifteen of us on a patrol tonight to capture prisoners. When he said he’d need a translator, I instantly knew it’d be me or Joe as we were the only two in Second Platoon who could speak German. Webster could as well, but we didn’t know which Platoon he’d be in.
After Nixon and Winters left, Speirs began talking to Lipton about who should lead, and who he could take for the patrol. During this, Jones asked to be on the patrol, which Speirs answered quickly and easily with a no, that he hadn’t any experience.
“Lipton, how many prisoners do you think there’ll be?” Speirs asked the man in question.
“Honestly, sir, I’m not quite sure, anywhere between three to forty it seems.” He said in reply.
“(L/n).” Speirs called for me as I was sitting in a chair reading.
“Ya want me to be a translator, that it?” I asked, knowing that’s what he was about to ask me.
“Yes ma’am.”
“Alright.”
When Webster and Lieutenant Jones left for OP two, I decided to get going as well. I knew Liebgott would be there so that was a good enough reason for me.
“Web, I’m comin’ with. Joe’s probably there right now.” I said to David, although slightly talking to Jones as well, to let him know I’d be going to.
“Yeah, no problem. Say when you’re finished with that book, d’ya mind if I reread it?” He asked me as all three of us walked down the street.
“Awh hell Web, I’ve read this thing three times now, you can go ahead and read it now.” I said while throwing him the book, silently noting how quiet Lieutenant Jones was behind us. The two men were running around crouching behind a little garden wall as I stood up, not seeing why they were doing that. When I heard the door open, Sergeant Kiehn came out, greeting me and Web and telling us where OP two was at. Before anymore words could get exchanged, bombs and mortars started raining down on us and we started running and ducking to take cover. We sat against the wall of a building before a man shouted out that it was all clear. After that, we quickly got to the building where OP two was located. Once inside, I immediately went upstairs and sat down on Joe’s bunk and plopped my stuff down.
“Hey doll, where’d you run off to?” Joe asked while wrapping his arms around me as a way to annoy me.
“Went to help Lip, where’d you go?” I asked while laughing at him.
“Came here.” He replied while digging his face into my stomach and faking sleep. Web and Lieutenant Jones came up not too long after I had, and when Jones saw me and Liebgott he immediately stiffened and gave me and Joe a weird look.
“This spot taken?” Webster asked.
“Nah it’s all yours.” Joe said to him while turning his face away from my stomach, my hands went down to card through his hair and he took notice of Jones’ look.
“Fuck are you staring at?” Joe asked him while sitting up and giving him his own glare.
“I’m sorry?” The Lieutenant asked, offended.
“You got a starin’ problem? Why you lookin’ at me and (Y/n) like that?” He challenged him.
“Alright, alright. Quit fighting, we’ve got news.” Webster said, breaking up the fight.
“Dummer, zimperlicher Junge, der dich so ansieht. (Stupid, prissy boy, lookin at you like that)” Joe mumbled to me in German, only loud enough for only me to hear.
“Er ist einfach sauer, weil du mich berührst und nicht er. (He's just mad because you're touching me and not him)” I said back laughing.
Me and Joe got up to go talk to a bunch of men in the corner laughing and smoking, while Webster and Jones went to talk to Malark. When Joe heard them talk about the patrol he pulled Web aside and I went and sat next to Babe to listen to what he was going to say.
“What do you know about this patrol thing?” Joe asked Web quietly.
“Uh, nothing.” Web said while nodding his head.
“Oh, come on, Web. You gotta know something.” Ramirez interrogated.
“I don’t” He replied adamantly
` “Bullshit.”
Web and everyone went back and forth and soon more people sat down to listen. I knew Web wouldn’t give anything up, so I decided to. My head was starting to hurt and I wanted to lay down before the patrol knowing I’d be on it at 0100.
“Speirs is picking fifteen men, Jonesy boy wants to be one of ‘em.” I said while yawning. Joe looked down at me and said,
“I say let the kid go, he could use the experience.” He smiled then Ramirez perked up,
“And I bet they could find fourteen other replacements to help him out.” while smirking.
“Nope.” I said, popping the p. “Babe, McClung, Ramirez and I are going out there.” I said dismissively.
“(Y/n)!” Web hissed at me.
“What?” I asked, confused. Then proceeded with,
“Pssh, I’ll just say it was you who said it, Joe and Babe’ll back me up, won’t you boys.” I asked, smiling up at Joe then at Babe.
“Course we will, doll.” Joe replied and Babe grunted. Webster deadpanned me and sat down when Malarkey started telling us about the patrol.
When the phone rang, and the PX supplies came in, I was ecstatic. New shoes and a shower? Felt like late Christmas. On our way out, the Krauts started to bomb us. We ran down the stairs and I threw myself under a table with Joe. When we had made it outside, we heard there was a casualty, Bill Kiehn. He was a Toccoa man. It was upsetting and it was unfair that he’d gotten through Bastogne only to die like this. I hadn’t known him too well, but the fact that I’d been talking to him 30 minutes prior made me feel like throwing up. Instead of staying to watch, me and the rest of the second platoon went over to the showers to pick up our new ODs.
Arriving at the showers, we went to go pick up our new ODs, and anything else they’d dropped for us. Nixon was standing by the depot and was holding a box with my name on it. Being the only woman paratrooper here meant I’d need a different size uniform and boots. I thanked Nixon and grabbed the box, opening it. Inside there was a uniform my size, boots, and women’s sanitary needs, a new bra set, and a few new pairs of panties.
“Well ain’t you a lucky gal, getting new undergarments while we’re stuck with the same briefs.” A voice came from behind me. Getting ready to yell at whoever was looking over my shoulder, I turned and realized it was Joe.
“Aww, poor baby has to wear the same briefs.” I replied, feigning upset and then laughing when I saw his disgruntled expression.
 Before I could run off to take a much needed shower, Malarkey called for us to let us know who’d be going on the patrol.
Heffron, McClung, Ramirez, me, Liebgott, Grant, Wynn, Jackson, Shifty and Webster. When we heard how many second platoon men were going, you could practically feel the rage flowing from us.
We’d all been pissed, wanting to complain but knowing it’d do us no good. Malarkey went off towards the showers and told us to as well. There were men standing at the entrance, undressing and some coming out wet. I didn’t want to undress, even if it was only down to my bra and panties. I’d been behind Joe when I took my first few layers of my tops off. Down to my black bra and army-issued pants was when Webster came up to talk to Joe, effectively, scaring the shit out of me.
“Jesus, Web, you came outta nowhere.” I said, holding my hand to my chest to calm down.
“Oops, sorry (Y/n).” He said while rubbing the back of his neck nervously. I’d noticed his face had turned a bright shade of red, but I thought it was because he was embarrassed that he’d scared me. A hand shot out to grab my arm and turn me around when I noticed it was Joe.
“What’s the matter?” I asked curiously.
“Do you not see everyone lookin’ at you like they’re starving men looking at their last meal?” He asked bewildered. Suddenly, I became hyper aware of most of the men's eyes on me, waiting for me to finish undressing. Before I could respond Joe spoke up again.
“Nevermind that, just finish and we can go in together.” Quickly I went to undo my belt, and I realized Joe was already down to his briefs, waiting on me. I felt bad to make him wait, but he didn’t have to if he didn’t want to. I took this time to really look at Joe. Sure he was cute, and I’d definitely thought about him like this before, but would he really want me? I tried not to let my hopes get up, and as I slipped my pants down my legs, I forced myself to look away from his bare chest.
Having a hot shower was probably the best thing I’d had in a long time. Quickly scrubbing my body and hair down and then rinsing off, I stepped outside in a towel and grabbed my new uniform, and new undergarments.
Joe had finished showering, so I grabbed him by the arm and dragged him to a random building to change, and do my hair. When we got in, there was nobody there, probably all in the showers, so I took Joe to the first mirror I found in a bedroom and made him sit down. He had no obligations and I told him I’d be back after changing. Once I finished, I brought out my old undergarments and towel and hung them out to dry.
There was a vanity on the opposite side of a bed, with a little cushion seat, and some old, dusty hair products. I quickly got to work using them and braiding up my hair.
“Why’d you pull me away doll? Want me that bad huh?” He questioned while smirking at me and drawing a cigarette from his front pocket.
“Yeah, you wish. I wanted someone to talk to.” I joked back before replying honestly and looking at him through the mirror. I finished doing my last braid as Joe was telling me about one of his comics he found that he enjoyed. Standing up, I walked over to stand in front of him, looking down on him as he was sitting on the bed. He stopped talking and we made eye contact. He looked as handsome as ever sitting in his new ODs, with a fresh shower.
“Well don’t you look handsome in your new uniform with your hair combed.” I said to him in a sweet voice running my hands through his wet hair. His eyes darkened as his hands went to hold onto my hips.
“Jesus, (Y/n). We’ve been through hell and back and you’re still the most gorgeous woman I’d ever seen.” He said confidently. I could feel my face getting hot, he’d said things like this before, but this time, it felt different. Stronger almost.
“Oh, Joe. You’re the most handsome man I’ve ever met.” I whispered to him, and he looked up at my lips, silently asking me. I slowly closed my eyes and let my hands fall from his hair down to his face, I slowly leaned down as he looked up and closed my eyes. As our lips were less than a centimeter apart, someone awkwardly coughed.
We sprung away from each other, embarrassed that we got caught. Looking at who it was, some random replacement apologized and said he left something in here and it was his room.
When he left, I started laughing and grabbed Joe by the arm to pull him up.
“Come on, I bet everyone is wondering where we went.”
“Goddammit Johnny, you’re breaking my heart.” Luz said.
“Come on, George, just give me, I don’t know, ten, fifteen bars?” Martin pressured him
“Juicy fruit, happy?”
Johnny and Cobb had been pestering George to give them Hershey bars. I knew there wasn’t enough, and that it wasn’t fair so I just stayed quiet the whole time. Cobb began badgering George again and when George went to defend himself, a whole group of men walked in.
“Whoa, Hershey bars!” Joe exclaimed, coming up behind me to rest his hands on my shoulders from where I was sitting in front of the table of candy and treats.
“Jesus Christ.” Poor George just couldn’t catch a break.
“Wait your turn, Liebgott.” Cobb said, pissing me off. I never really liked Cobb and he didn’t like me.
“Yeah, who they for?” Liebgott asked George.
“Not you, Lieb.”
“Oh come on George, one bar!” Joe pestered, wanting to get that bar.
“Y’know who they’re for? People who don’t interrogate me. Here, (Y/n), have a bar!” George replied while looking Joe in the eye.
“Oh George! Thank you!” I exclaimed excitedly. I hadn’t known the last time I’d gotten chocolate.
“Christ, you’re only giving it to her because she’s a woman and you wanna get on her good side in case the opportunity arises to fuck her!” Cobb said angrily as I turned around, glaring, ready to hit him.
“That sounds more like something you’d do, knowing you couldn’t get a woman to sleep with you willingly if your life depended on it!” I yelled back at him which caused him to call me a slur of colorful words. After that, Joe yelled at him and I ignored him.
“Hey big mouth! Give Lieb a Hershey bar, huh?” Perconte asked.
When I heard his voice, I jumped up, running up to him to give him a hug.
“Perco! Your back!” I exclaimed as he hugged me back.
“You gotta be shittin’ me! Look who it is!” George laughed and said.
“How ya feeling?” Joe then asked him, smiling.
“As long as you keep your hands off my ass, I’ll be fine.” Perconte replied, laughing.
“Have a Hershey’s!” Luz threw one at Perconte.
“Hey he gets a fuckin Hershey bar?” Joe asked, offended as I came to sit down next to him, opening up my Hershey’s.
“Ask ya girlfriend to french ya when she’s done eating it.” George joked as I took a bite into my bar and broke it in half.
“I’ll do you one better, Joe.” I said after I swallowed and handed him the half I didn’t bite into. He took it with thanks.
“That’s not one better, he’d rather you kiss him (L/n)!” Luz said while laughing right after. Joe pushed him backwards while also laughing
At 1700, there was a briefing about the house we’d be going into. I was next to Shifty, talking with him. Every now and again me and Joe would make eye contact, until the other looked away. Winters, and Martin walked in which caused Joe to look away first. Winters explained Johnny would be going in Malarkey's place, and that made everyone slightly more comfortable. I was on Johnny’s team, along with Webster. I walked out and Liebgott was waiting for me, he left with me and as we passed Speirs, he told Joe he didn’t have to go on the patrol.
We’d been all stationed in the basement for now before the patrol. Having to eat slop and we couldn’t have our helmets. I sat with Shifty as I ate.
“Youse gonna be out there with a gun?” Shifty asked me in a sweet voice, I knew what he was talking about. He was asking if I’d be helping shoot.
“Nah, well obviously I’ll have a gun, but I’m mainly a translator.” I smiled at him and he smiled back.
“I don’ understand why they never let you shoot with me. You’re a helluva sniper.” Shifty told me, making me giggle at him.
“Oh Shift, you know how to make a woman feel good about herself.” I replied, happy that I got to talk to him before the patrol. He always knew how to make someone happy, even during nerve-wracking times.
At 0100, we were getting into those rubber boats, and setting sail on a short trip across the river. Before the fourth boat could even get far, it flipped and we were down three men. I wasn’t too nervous, knowing that I’d been through worse. When we got to the other side, Martin had someone cut the fence and me and Web, being translators, meant that we had to be up front in case we found any Germans.
So far, we’d gotten up to the steps of the house we’d need to get prisoners from. Johnny had shot into the window, and Jackson went up to throw his grenade, except, instead of waiting for it to finish detonating, Jackson didn’t stop and immediately went into the house, getting hit straight in the face with his grenade. As we ran in, me and Web were yelling at the men in German. We started to split the three men up when I heard a small cry in the corner of the room. I stopped to turn to go towards the sound.
“(L/n)! What are you doing?” Johnny yelled at me.
“Sir! There’s a child!” I shouted, confused. When I got down eye level with the little girl, I noticed she was only in a thin, white nightgown, with no shoes. She looked malnourished, hurt and mostly scared.
“Alsjeblieft! Alsjeblieft! (Please! Please!)” The little girl cried in Dutch, shrinking away from me when I went to get her.
“Het is goed schat! Rustig maar, ik ben hier om te helpen! (Its okay dear! Relax, I'm here to help!)” I replied to her in Dutch. What had a little Dutch girl been doing here? I didn’t have time to continue to calm the little girl before Johnny started yelling about getting on the boats and leaving.
“Klein meisje, ik ga je ophalen. (Little girl, I'm going to pick you up.)” I warned her before grabbing her bridal style and running with her out of the house and covering her eyes to make sure she didn’t see what was happening around her with Jackson. Pushing everyone into the boats, the girl I was holding onto kept crying and crying. The poor little girl couldn’t have been more than four years old.
“Het is goed schat. Het is goed schat. (It’s alright baby. It’s alright baby.)” I kept repeating to the small frightened girl. When Webster jumped into the boat behind me, we started going back to our side. He had his head ducked, as the Krauts kept shooting at the back boat. He had his arms around me when he realized I was shielding a child.
“(Y/n)! What the hell? Why do you have a child?” He yelled out over the gun fire.
“I don’t know! She was in the corner, she’s Dutch!” I replied, still confused as to how she got here and why she wasn’t in the Netherlands. We all ran downstairs, I was still holding onto the little girl, she had come from the Germans territory so I had to stay with her by the other prisoners. Nobody had come up to me about the girl yet so I took this as a time to try to get information so she wasn’t bombarded when adrenaline wore off.
“Wat is je naam? (What’s your name?)” I asked her calmly. She looked up at me with teary dark blue eyes. “Tineke.” She responded in a quiet voice. I was sitting on the floor and I held her so she was only facing me. I could feel someone watching me, but for now I didn’t care.
“Mooie naam! De mijne is (Y/n)! (Beautiful name! Mine is (Y/n)!)” I replied while smiling at her and gently carding my hand through her dark brown strands. Her skin was deathly pale and it was obvious she hadn’t drank or eaten anything in a long time. I gave her my canteen and she took it wearily. She wouldn’t drink it because she was scared of what could be in it. I took it back and took a small sip and gave it back. When she noticed I was okay, she started drinking out of it rapidly.
When she finished drinking, I asked her more questions.
“Spreek je Engels? (Can you speak English?)” I asked her. “Little bit.” She replied hesitantly.
“Very good, mijn liefje! (My love!)” She seemed to smile a little at the name I’d given her.
“Where is your mommy?” I asked slowly. She started to get upset at the mention of her mother but she replied anyway.
“She die. The Duits kill her. I am Joods. They take her and kill my mammie in de camps for Jodens. Then they keep me. (The Germans kill her. I am Jewish. My mommy. Camps for Jews.)” She told me in a somber tone. When she couldn’t think of the right word, she’d just say it in Dutch. I thought about bringing her to Joe later knowing he was Jewish, she might feel comfortable with him.
“You’re safe now, liefje.” I told her while bringing her close to my chest. She ended up falling asleep not even ten minutes later. It gave me time to think about what she had said. She never mentioned a last name which made me believe she didn’t know it. The camp she was talking about was also weird. What did she mean by a camp for Jewish people?
Jackson had died. That boy who’d just turned twenty, had died. He had his whole life ahead and he died in a stupid war. I hadn’t even known him too well, but he just died in front of me, in front of everyone. I was thankful Tineke was asleep as she’d already seen enough.
A day had passed since the patrol. The Germans were taken away and Tineke wouldn’t talk to anyone except me, and occasionally Joe. When Winters had found out about her, he had to ask her questions. I had come with because she couldn’t speak English very well and she refused to go anywhere if I wasn’t with her. The poor girl had been traumatized and it seemed like she’d been like that for a while.
While asking her questions, we found out her family was Jewish, and when the Germans found out, they took her and her family out of their homes to be sent to a camp. She didn’t know much, just that her mother and her got away and when they were found by the two Germans, her mother tried to fight against them resulting in her getting shot. Tineke was then taken as a hostage.
Doc Roe came in to see how she was and it turned out she had been malnourished, and if I hadn’t found her when I did she would’ve been dead. Later that day I took her to the building where the second platoon was located to introduce her.
I walked in and held onto Tine and went upstairs.
“Guys, this is Tineke. She was found in the house with the other POWs and she’s Dutch. She can speak some English, but don’t bombard her.” I spoke when I went upstairs and saw everyone. They all looked at us, and one by one I walked around with her and had her say hi to everyone. When I got to the last person, Joe, I sat down on the bunk with him and had her greet him.
“Tine, why don’t you tell Joe what you are.” I reminded her. I had told her to tell him she was Jewish before we went upstairs.
“Jewish.” Was all she said, nervous and not knowing too much English, she turned her face away into my chest. I rubbed my hand down her knotted, dirty hair realizing she needed a bath.
“Ain’t that cool! I’m Jewish too!” Joe responded in a sweet voice, smiling down at her when she slightly turned her head towards him. Before any more words could get exchanged, Webster came in to break the news that we were to go on another patrol that night and there would be another meeting at 1800. It was currently 1530 so I decided to bring Tineke down to the kitchen sink where I could give her a makeshift bath. I remembered how my mom would do that for me and my siblings when we were little and there were no baths in any of the houses.
I grabbed some soap and put it in her hair while I’d tell her stories to pass the time.
“A long time ago, there were two moons. It was said one of them, named houden got too close to the sun, and out came thousands of dragons.” I told her a story my mother used to tell me all the time.
“Houden? To hold?” She asked as I began rinsing out her hair.
“That’s right. That’s how dragons were born.” I told her. As I finished saying that, another voice piped up from behind me.
“I didn’t know dragons were born from the moon.” Joe came up behind me and waved at Tineke, who brought her hand up slightly.
“That’s because I never told you that.” I said while smiling up at him. He moved to have his arms around my waist and laid his head on my shoulder. I finished rinsing Tine off then I grabbed a towel and wrapped her in it. Nixon had got clothes small enough to fit her from one of his sources. It was a small, black dress with a dark brown fluffy shawl. She also had stockings and tiny boots. When I finished dressing her, I braided up her hair and put on a hat.
At 1800 we all went down to the basement to await Winter’s meeting he called.
“Whatcha lookin’ at Webster.” A drunk Cobb said. I put one of my hands on Web’s shoulder, holding Tineke to my chest as she slept on me, and he turned to give me a smile.
“That’s what I thought, college boy.” Cobb said while swaying lightly on his feet. I gave Cobb a glare and squeezed the hand I had on Web’s shoulder.
“Are you drunk, trooper?” Lieutenant Jones asked him, angrily.
“Leave me alone.” Cobb replied, looking away.
“Answer the question.” Jones said firmly.
“Yes, sir, I am drunk, sir.” Cobb said sassily before adding, “Drunk, and sick and tired of fucking patrols. Taking orders-”
“Hey Cobb, shut up. It’s boring, okay.” Martin cut him off before he could finish what he was saying.
“Taking his side, Johnny?” “Yeah, I am.”
After that shit show I went and sat by Joe, wanting to make sure I wouldn’t be in Cobb’s line of fire in case he decided to throw something.
Winters came in to not only tell us that we didn’t have to go on that patrol, but that we’d also be off the line tomorrow. After he left, everyone started talking, which woke up Tine, who had no idea what was going on, but was happy because everyone else was.
When I went upstairs, Winters was waiting for me.
“Hey, (Y/n).” He said, a bittersweet tone to his voice.
“Hello, sir. Anything I can help you with?” I asked, slightly nervous that he had waited for me.
“It turns out, we found one of Tineke’s family members. Her aunt and uncle. They’re set to come tonight.” He said quietly.
“Oh. Well that’s great!” I smiled slightly, feeling my heart get heavy at the fact that the young girl would be leaving.
“Tine, you hear that? Your aunt and uncle are coming to pick you up.” I told her, looking down at her. She perked up, looking between me and Winters and then she smiled. She smiled bigger than I’d ever seen her smile.
When her aunt and uncle arrived at 2100, Tineke ran up to them and they picked her up. They repeatedly thanked me and Winters and before they left, I gave Tineke a hug and kiss and turned around to walk away. As I did that, I noticed Joe was standing there waiting for me, smiling sweetly at me. We walked away, arm in arm to go back to the house together. The next day, we’d all been sent to the trucks to move to our new location. I was sitting next to Joe, my head on his shoulder as I slept.
We had made it to Germany. The Krauts surrendered and Hitler shot himself. We were finally able to stay in an actual house, with actual baths and actual beds. To us, life couldn’t get any better.
Me and Joe had been sharing a house with Perco and Luz. Frank and George went out to get eggs from a farmhouse a few blocks down so right now it was just me and Joe.
“You excited, doll?” He asked me from the table. I put down one of the wet dishes I was washing, and replied,
“For what Lieb?” “We got through the hard part!” Oh. I hadn’t really thought about that yet.
“Well, yeah, I guess. I’m just scared that I’ll have to go to the Pacific if this war finishes soon.” I replied genuinely.
“Oh don’t worry about that right now.” He said while standing up and coming behind me. I put down the last dish and pulled off the wet, yellow gloves I had on to wash the dishes in.
“Y’know, Perco and Luz just left.”
“I know Liebgott, I’ve got eyes.” I replied, smiling up at him while turning around to face him. He put his hands on the sink behind me and smiled down on me.
“Well if your eyes are any good, then you’ll be able to see how much of a hold ya got on me.” He spoke before closing the distance between us and closing the gap.
I immediately closed my eyes and kissed him back. We slowly pulled apart, and without another word he slammed his mouth into mine. This time, he was much more passionate. His hands wandered down to my waist, and mine went up to his neck and hair. I gasped as he bit my bottom lip, and he snuck his tongue into my mouth. I kissed him back with as much fervor as I could, slightly pulling on his hair without realizing. He moaned into my mouth and the vibrations caused heat to pool in my stomach.
His hands started to roam down my body, causing me to moan as well. He pulled me flush against him and then pulled me up the stairs into one of the rooms I was occupying. I gently sat down on the bed and his fingers went to my uniform top, unbuttoning my shirt.
Perconte and Luz were walking down the trail to the house they were sharing with (Y/n) and Joe, they had eggs to cook up for everyone. When they got inside, they expected to see (Y/n) and Joe downstairs, waiting for them like they had been before.
“Hey, where’d they go-”
“D’you hear that?” George cut Frank off when he heard what sounded like muffled banging from upstairs. The two men immediately smirked at each other, and Luz ran upstairs.
They stopped outside of the door getting ready to knock, when they heard moaning from the other side.
Before Frank could hold George back, he knocked on the door yelling,
“You two better hurry up before me and Perco eat all the eggs!” It was quiet for a moment before Joe shouted out towards the two men,
“Go ahead! I’m eating something way better!”

Summary: Turns out all Y/n needed to pour their heart out was a sleepless night by the fire in a lovely Austrian hotel.
• JOSEPH LIEBGOTT
You got me, I got you (a|os)
Summary; the European conflict seems to be coming to an end when Easy Company stumbles upon the true horrors of it. This terrible discovery shakes Liebgott to his core, forcing him to be pulled back by Y/n. Having some time alone with each other, their friendship appears to be reaching its culmination.
Handle the situation (a|os|?)
Request: Can I request an angsty lieb x reader fic in which the reader pushes alley away from the potato masher at crossroads and it hits her instead and like joe is literally dying inside cuz they had been fighting prior to that?
Poison in your coffee (f|os|?)
Request: got a request for you, Liebgott x reader with the prompt "+If I were your wife, I'd put poison in your tea/-If I were your husband, I'd drink it"?? Not too angsty.

• WILLIAM GUARNERE
Deserve better (f-a|os|?)
Request: Can request angst to fluff fic with bill guarnere x reader, where maybe they see each other after the war, when she comes to Philadelphia to see him but he's like, 'you should find someone better than me' y'know?

The boys reacting to their significant other being a great shot and having a high kill count. (Luz, Liebgott, Malarkey, Shifty)

How Different men from BoB and The Pacific would react to you being insecure
Part 2 (George Luz, Joseph Liebgott, and Ron Speirs):
Tiny warning: Speirs’ section is a tad bit suggestive but is not explicit or graphic in anyway
Tumblr media
George Luz:
• You wonder why George is with you,
• He’s so funny, witty, charming!
• And you’re…not.
• It’s not that people didn’t like you. Because they did.
• You just didn’t think your personality could hold a candle to George’s.
• George thought you were super funny, though.
• You didn’t try to be funny like he did, even though he was good at it. You were just naturally good at it without meaning to be.
• That’s one of the things that drew George to you. He thought it was amazing how you were so funny without even trying to be. You just made comments that came to you. And they were hilarious. (This isn’t you’re funny without meaning to in terms of, like, ignorance or stupidity, btw, like “Aw, cute, haha, you don’t know how to do this thing or you don’t know what this is and you should”)
• So he notices when you haven’t joked or even really talked that much one day.
• He sits next to you and asks you in all sincerity what’s wrong.
• And, of course, you reply that nothing is.
• Which earns you a frown. Because obviously something is wrong.
• So George asks you again.
• And you know the jig is up.
• You try to explain it to him.
• And he’s flabbergasted.
• “You mean…to tell me…that you don’t think you’re funny?”
• “That’s right.” You’re completely serious.
• George laughs.
• “What’s so funny?”
• “The fact that you don’t think you’re funny.”
• “I’m not.”
• “Yes you are! You just don’t try to be. You’re naturally funny.”
• “Not as much as you.”
• “I’m funny because I’m good at being funny. And I’m good at being funny because I want to be. I practice. I see what people do or don’t laugh at. And do the things that make them laugh. I do it for attention, mostly. But you don’t try and you’re funny.”
• “How so?”

Protective
Various (Joe Liebgott, Bill Guarnere, Bull Randleman, Dick Winters) x Female!Medic!Reader (platonic)
Word count: ~1.3k
Key: Y/R = Your Rank (Private, Corporal, Sargent), Y/L/N = Your Last Name
Disclaimer: I do not own Band of Brothers. I do not own any characters or scenes. All credits go to the appropriate people.
Bit of a warning, I suppose: I am female. This character (reader) is female and is partially modeled after myself. I identify as bisexual. The female reader has no issue with a woman kissing her (on the cheek; and she kisses her on the cheek back). A man kisses her on the lips (another warning: it is forcibly and not consensual; this was not ok back then and isn’t ok today, just because I write something, it doesn’t mean I condone it). The woman kisses her just on the cheek. I’m not saying letting a woman kiss you on the cheek makes you a lesbian or bisexual. You can still be heterosexual, obviously. But it’s there and I’m just letting you know.
PS: Dialogue tags are hard, ok? And this ends like all of my other stuff, ok? Badly and abruptly.

They’re My Sanitary Pads, Sir
Various (Guarnere, Toye, Liebgott, Makarkey, and Winters) x Female!Medic!Reader (Platonic) (Medic isn’t a huge part of it, though, you can pretend that’s not there if you want)
Word Count: ~2.9k
Disclaimer: takes place at Toccoa, but story may have them being at Toccoa longer than they actually were. It just suits the story. The setting; Currahee. Also, maybe Sobel just did this once? And it was later? And he kicked someone out for stealing…Let’s just pretend he did it a couple of time or whatever, ok? Also, just kind of ignore the history of sanitary/menstrual pads a bit. It mostly works, but it’s a bit iffy. Also, Winters may be XO a little earlier than reality. Sobel being a Captain…should fit???
Just, the timeline/some details aren’t accurate, alright? Deal with it.
Also…I do not own Band of Brothers, or any scenes or characters from it. All credit goes to the appropriate owners.
Also, per usual, this did not go the way it did in my head.
Key: Y/N/N = Your Nickname (shortened version of your name or other nickname), Y/L/N = Your Last Name
Warning: menstruation is discussed. If you are uncomfortable with this topic, please do not read. Also, please don’t be weird or gross about this. It’s a natural body process. I am not comfortable with it being sexualized by people I do not know, so please don’t sexualize it.

My #1 post of 2022
If it’s considered perfectly ok for people to say they like sports when they watch other people play sports on TV despite not actually playing sports themselves, then it should be considered perfectly ok for me to say that I like certain video games if I watch people play them on YouTube despite not actually playing the games myself.

However, morale is low due to cold weather, constant shelling, zero relief, and numerous casualties to include a few of your closest friends as Easy pushes forward into Haguenau.

Beginning 1x7 The Breaking Point then transitions into 1x8 The Last Patrol

~~~~~~~
January 5th, 1945
German artillery fired onto Easy Company from the town as Easy soldiers scattered to the nearest foxholes to take cover.
“INCOMING! TAKE COVER!” Lipton shouts to the men as he runs to the nearest foxhole.
Blasts coming from all directions causing trees to fall and dirt to fly made it difficult for the men to navigate safe passages to their holes. You had been separated from Joe before the attack started. You lay flat behind a pile of fallen trees for cover while you shield your face from the debris. You were too afraid to move, fearing you’d just get hit.
After what seemed like hours, the ambush came to a halt, and you suddenly heard a familiar call from the distance.
“MEDIC!”
You sprang from the ground and started running towards the cry for help then you ran into LT Buck Compton.
“Buck! Are you ok!?” you ask as you look him over frantically.
He had a distant look in his eyes.
“Sir? SIR??” you take him by the shoulders and shake him.
Buck finally looked at you, “...yeah.” he whispered.
“Did you see anyone else that was hurt? I heard someone call for a medic.”
His eyes began to gloss over. You tilted your head while you furrowed your eyebrows.
“Buck? Who needs help? Please, tell me!” you urge him.
He pointed to a path through the trees and uttered names that almost had you fainting at his feet.
“Bill...and Joe.”
You wasted no time dashing through the tree line where he had pointed to. The path lined by the woods seemed never ending. All you heard was the drumming of your heartbeat in your ears while your feet became heavier and heavier impeding your ability to get to Joe as fast as possible. Images of his lifeless body flashed before your eyes, causing tears to stream down, stinging your cheeks from the cold air.
You finally reach the clearing, stopping to assess the carnage of blood in front of you. You see Doc Roe already kneeling over a soldier lying on his back whose face you couldn’t see from where you had been standing. To the left you see Guarnere leaning against a pine, his right leg hanging on only by tendons and ligaments.
Two men rushed in with a litter.
“Bill, you go first.”
“Whatever you say, Doc.” Bill replied.
“Over here. Take this man.” Gene ordered pointing at Guarnere.
Guarnere was hoisted onto the stretcher, and carried off, not before a snappy exit comment,
“Hey, Joe, I told ya I'd beat ya back to the States.”
Tunnel vision sets in as the world starts to cave in on you. You fall to your knees as you attempt to pace your breathing so you won’t pass out.
Malarkey appeared from the path behind you.
“Y/F/N! Hey, you ok??” he asked concerned as he hooked you under the arm to help you up.
His voice was distant and muffled.
“I-I-” you stuttered, but words completely fail you when you see the right leg of the soldier that Doc was helping...more so the right leg that was completely missing. You gasp slapping your hand over your mouth in a desperate attempt to stop the scream of terror from escaping. You look at Malarkey with dread painted all over your face.
“It’s...Joe!?” you managed to say between panting as you start to hyperventilate.
Don looked over and understood what you were reacting to.
“Y/F/N, that’s Toye. Joe Toye.” he clarified slowly and deliberately so you could understand.
You stare back at him, progressively absorbing what he just said.
“Toye…” you echoed back.
Don nodded. You look back at Doc and Joe Toye, finally coming back down from your shock.
As Malarkey pulled you up, Doc turned around noticing you were there.
“Hey, Y/F/N, come over here and hold this so I can wrap it up.”
You swiftly go to help Eugene, seeing Toye’s pale face as you get closer.
“Hang in there, Toye.” you say in your best reassuring tone.
~~~~~~~
That night, Corporal Penkala and Sgt. Skip Muck's foxhole took a direct hit, killing them instantly, a moment witnessed by George Luz. A dud shell also landed next to Luz and Lipton's foxhole, fortunately sparing their lives.
The eventful day the Germans provided had you and Eugene running around like crazy, following the cries of ‘medic’ in every direction. Both of you were running on steam, and you had yet to see Joe Liebgott at all since this attack began.
When the bombardment finally calmed down, it was too dark to venture out to find him. You decided the safest bet was to stay put. You would’ve heard by now if Joe had been transferred to the aid station. Or at least you hoped.
The following day, the move on the town of Foy commenced, thankfully with LT Speirs in command. As Easy company rushed the field towards the town, a sniper effectively picks off the men as they approach. The sniper is eventually taken down by a mortar and the men quickly enter Foy. With the village filled with attacking Germans, Speirs makes a suicidal run through the German front line to make contact with I Company. However, the most fascinating thing about what Speirs did wasn't that he successfully connected with I Company, but that he ran back the same way he'd gone unscathed.
~~~~~~~
After taking the town of Rachamps a few weeks later, Easy takes a much-needed rest in the solace of a local convent. The Sisters have taken the liberty of bringing in their choir to sing for soldiers. Of the 145 men that entered Bastogne, only 63 remained. After you have tended to the wounds of the soldiers that were hurt during the assault, you wander amongst the men to find your Joe.
You find Lipton and Speirs conversating in one of the aisles.
“Hey, Y/L/N, good to see ya. You doin’ ok?” Lipton asks.
You nod, “Yes sir. You?”
“I’m just fine.” he responded softly.
You look at LT Speirs, “Sir?”
“I’m fine, Corporal.” he stated.
“You haven't seen Liebgott by chance, have you?” You ask, trying not to sound too distressed.
Lipton looked over the crowd of scattered soldiers.
“Yeah, he’s right over there. By the altar.”
You look where he had pointed and see Joe sitting on the floor against the stone wall by himself where dozens of lit candles stood on iron stands around him. You B line to him, picking up the pace to get to him as fast as you could. As you get within ear shot you call out to him.
Tumblr media
“Joe!” you manage to gasp.
Joe quickly looked up upon hearing your voice. His face lit up when he saw you, hastily standing up to meet you halfway. When you reached him, he enveloped you, lifting you up from the ground as he pressed you against his body.
You bury your face into the crook of his neck as happy tears began to cascade from your bloodshot eyes. Joe’s chest heaving from joy was electrifying, leaving you a melting mess in his arms while he lowered to your feet.
“I thought they got you.” you whispered through your sobs.
Joe scoffed, “Those Krauts ain’t gettin’ me.”
He pulled away to look at your face. He used his gloved thumb to wipe your tears.
“I’m right here, Gams.”
You throw your arms around his neck, pulling him into a desperate kiss. His arms snake around your waist, angling his head to intensify the lock he had on your lips. You unconsciously slack your jaw, allowing his tongue to slowly run along your lower lip. Although you both were lost in this magical moment, you suddenly became aware that you were ‘necking’ in a church and thought it best to behave before you both lost complete control.
You gently pull back as Joe’s disappointment clearly appeared across his face.
“We shouldn’t have done that here.” you admit.
Joe smiled at your properness.
“If God didn’t want it to happen in His house, He wouldn’t have let it.” Joe justified.
You raise an eyebrow and smirk at him.
“It’s inappropriate.” you countered.
“So, you’re saying if it had been right outside the church, it would’ve been fine?” he countered.
You giggle, “Perhaps.”
Joe laughed, “Well how about we find a place to rest, and we can just cuddle up?” he compromised.
“Yes.” you agree as he pulled you by the hand to where he was sitting.
The church had provided blankets to the men, which Joe had spread out on the floor picnic style. He sat against the wall, then offered his hand for you to hold as you lowered yourself down next to him. He folded his coat, placing it on his lap for you to lay your head on. You nuzzle into him, resting the side of your face onto the coat while he combed his finger softly through your mess of hair.
Before you drift off to sleep, over the choir singing in the background, you hear a low gravelly whisper:
“Ikh hab dir lib (y)(I love you).”
~~~~~~~
February 9th, 1945
The plan had been to relieve Easy Company and head to Mourmelon. The following morning, orders changed after Hitler launched a counteroffensive in Alsace, and you were all to help hold the line in the town of Haguenau.
As Easy began loading up on trucks for Haguenau, PVT David Webster is dropped off by a depot Jeep,
"Thanks for the lift." Webster tells the driver.
As he greeted his battered comrades, he received no welcoming glance from any of them. The air of disdain grew thick as he passed each truck. He had been sent to an aid station long before Bastogne, and their collective resentment stemmed from his long stay in the hospital and his making no effort to return quickly and rejoin the company.
You're seated next to Joe in the bed of a deuce truck, huddled into him trying to keep warm as Webster walked up.
"Hey guys, some lieutenant told me to report to 2nd." he stated gesturing with his thumb over his shoulder behind him.
He looked at one of the soldiers across from you and Liebgott.
"You're name's Jackson, right?
"That's right." Jackson replied dryly.
"Who's leading the platoon?" Webster queried.
"Sgt Malarkey is." Jackson responded.
"What? No officers?" Webster questioned.
"I guess you didn't hear." Liebgott began, "They're making Malarkey lieutenant. He's on the fast track now."
"Really? That's great." Webster noted.
"Yeah, ain't it?" Joe replied sarcastically.
"Hey, Jackson, help me up, will ya?" Webster said trhowing his gear bag up onto the bed of the truck as he hoisted himself up.
Webster sat on the bench next to Jackson, then noticed you half passed out on Joe's shoulder. He observed the medic brassard on your left arm.
"New medic?" he asked, motioning with his head towards you.
Joe looked down at you, shifting your face onto his chest as he wrapped his left arm around you to hold you steady when the truck picked up speed.
"No. She's been here since the beginning." he stated, shooting a cold glance at Webster.
Tumblr media
"So, you came from the hospital?" Jackson asked Webster.
"Yeah."
"Must've liked that hospital, cuz, uh, we left Holland four months ago." Joe sneered.
Webster felt the bitterness, “Well I wasn’t there the whole time. There was rehabilitation, then the replacement depot-“
“-Well I’m sure you tried to bust out and help us in Bastogne.” Joe interjected.
“Well, I don’t know how I would’ve done that.” Webster defended.
“That’s funny, because Popeye found a way. So did Alley, right? Back in Holland,” Joe illustrated to Babe who was sitting on your left, “And Guarnere--”
“Yeah, where is Guarnere? He still your platoon sergeant?” Webster asked obliviously.
“No. He got hit.” Jackson answered bitterly.
The trucks arrived at Haguenau then came to a hard stop. The men started to unload from the rear. Joe gently nudged you.
“Zeit zu gehen, Liebling (g)(Time to go, darling).” Joe whispered to you.
“She speaks German, too?” Webster probed.
You strain your eyes to look at him.
“Who’s this?” you ask Joe.
“Webster.” Joe answered plainly.
“Hm, don’t you look all bright eyed and bushy tailed.” You say through a yawn.
Joe scoffed, “Yeah, had a four month furrlow, now he’s ready for war.” Joe joked.
Joe jumped from the bed of the truck, then offered his hand to you to help you down which you accepted.
“Spread out. Hold along this line ‘til I figure out where we’re going.” Malarkey called out.
“Sarge? Sarge-“ Webster approached Malarkey.
An incoming shell soared over and hit a nearby building before Malarkey could respond. An unexpecting frightened Webster dove to the ground while LT Speirs spectated in the background like a child watching a fireworks display.
“What’s the matter there, Webster? A little nervous in the service?” Malarkey teased.
~~~~~~~
Later in one of the abandoned houses of the town, Captain Speirs and LT Lipton were setting the place up as Command Post. Lipton had been fighting off pneumonia since you left Rachamps and was looking rather rough. You and Eugene had been hounding him since to take it easy, but he has chosen to keep pushing through for the men.
“Sir, pneumonia has killed people with rest. You keep pushin’ yourself like this you’re gonna die.” You lecture him, “Luz, go grab the man a blanket, will ya?”
You call out to George as you guide him back down onto the couch.
“I’ll be alright, Y/L/N.” Lipton assurred.
“Sgt Lipton? Feeling all right?” Webster’s voice carried through the room.
You look up, slightly annoyed, “Look at him. He’s got pneumonia, does he look all right?” you hiss.
“Sorry to hear that.” Webster replied.
“What are you sorry about?” Luz said as he threw a wool blanket over Lipton, “He’s alive, he’s got a couch, a goddamn blanket. He’s snug as a bug.”
“Well, if the man would stay off his feet and keep warm...maybe eat something, he may actually recover.” You state firmly.
Lipton sighed, “I promise I will try harder to take it easy, Y/F/N.”
You hum is disbelief as you try to start a fire in the fireplace to heat some soup for him.
"You fuckin' Italians think you can solve everything with food." Luz said outloud.
You glare over your shoulder at him.
"Non vengo pagata abbastanza per essere tua madre (i)(I don't get paid enough to be your mother)." you mumble under your breath.
Luz's face twisted with confusion, "Huh?"
"Nothin'." you reply curtly.
“Have a seat Webster, I’ll help you get situated.” Lipton said pointing to the chair nearest to him.
Webster observed you by the fireplace.
“So, you Liebgott’s girl?” Webster inquired.
You start the fire and hang a tin cup with water and broth above it before you respond.
“What if I am?”
He stared back in shock.
“Just wonderin’.”
“You got a lot to say, don’tchya? A little advice, David Webster, quit asking these guys so many questions about who went where. Don’t make them relive all their losses so soon. Got it?” you say with spitfire behind your voice.
Webster’s jaw fell open while his eyes widened.
“Um, yeah. Got it.” He uttered.
You give him one last look over and leave the room.
Upon your return, a replacement officer arrived while Captain Speirs moved about the room shuffling through some papers he had snatched from Lipton’s hands.
“Listen, for chrissake, will ya go back in the back and sack out? There’s beds back there with fresh sheets.” Speirs ordered Lipton before he could say anything.
“THANK YOU, SIR.” You project across the room to the Captain, “I guess it takes a direct order from the CO to get you to do what me and Doc been askin' you to do for days.” You assert with exasperation.
Lipton shot you a frustrated expression, “I will, sir, I was just tryin’ to make myself useful, sir.”
Another abandoned building was designated as barracks for the companies occupying the town. Floors that were able to bare weight, had bunks lining the walls in each room. You had a single bed to yourself that was conveniently arranged where the headboard of your bed met Liebgott’s bottom bunk. You lay on Joe’s bed briefly to rest your eyes.
The new officer, LT Jones, entered the room to let Malarkey know that at 0100, a mission was to commence across the river to obtain POW’s for interrogation. After Jones took Malarkey aside to go over a few details, Liebgott took Webster to the bunks to get the information out of him.
“Hey, Web. Come here, I wanna talk to you for a second.”
“Why??” Webster asked alarmed.
“You want some coffee?”
“No.” Webster replied quickly, paranoid by Joe’s sudden act of kindness.
Joe looked at Jackson, “Fifteen.”
“Fifteen what?” Jackson asked.
“Looeys since D-Day,” Joe replied, “This kid out of high school yet?”
Joe asked looking at LT Jones talking to Malarkey by the window.
“West Point.” Webster replied.
“Isn’t that where Ike went?” Jackson asked.
“He actually graduated with his son.” Webster clarified.
“Shit. So, uh, what do you know about this patrol thing?” Joe interrogated Webster.
Tumblr media
You sat up from Joe’s bunk.
“Patrol?” you asked, somewhat panicked.
“Uh, nothing.” Webster lied.
“Oh, come on, I know you know something.” Ramirez pushed.
“I don’t!” Webster insisted.
Joe spit at the floor, “Bullshit. You were there, right? At the CP. This is a prisoner snatch, right? Come on, Webster. Spill it.” Joe pressured.
You shifted onto the side of the mattress to hear better.
“Capt Speirs is to pick fifteen men. LT Jones wants to be one of them.”
“I say let the kid go. He could use the experience.” Joe said with a cynical smile.
“Probably could find fourteen replacements to help him out.” Ramirez added.
“Who’s going?” You chime in, asking Webster, “I assume they need a translator and a medic.”
“I don’t know who.” he replied.
You roll your eyes at him.
“Why are you holding out on me? I know you know-” Joe accused Webster, “Who?”
Webster hesitated, “Well, if I tell you, you can’t let anyone know I let you know.”
“Your secret’s safe with me, Web. Who is it?” Joe urged.
Webster paused, “Heffron-“
“Oh, shit.” Babe huffed.
“-McClung, and Ramirez.” He ended.
“He want any other guys from any other platoon?” Joe asked.
“No. I don’t know. Not that I know of. That’s all I know, I’m sorry.”
~~~~~~~
“2nd Platoon, on me!” Malarkey called right outside the shower tents that were set up for the soldiers to finally have a proper hot shower.
The men form up around him.
“All right, I’m leading this patrol. CO wants Grant, Liebgott, Wynn, Jackson, Shifty from 3rd platoon, and Webster.” He relayed.
“They don’t want anyone from first?” Cobb asked.
“No.”
“Is there anyone they don’t want from 2nd Platoon? Jesus Christ-” Joe expressed sarcastically rolling his eyes, “It’s always 2nd Platoon. I swear to God, if we were down to three guys, they’d still want us for it.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Joe trudged off towards the showers.
You run after Malarkey, “Malark, they didn’t say anything about bringing a medic?”
“Those were the only names they gave me, Y/L/N.” he replied wryly.
“Maybe you can suggest I come with-“
“Y/F/N, those are the names. I’m sure there’s a reason they’re not sending you or Doc.” he barked.
You coward back slightly, trying not to push the subject any further.
He softened his demeanor realizing he was overreacting some, “I know you wanna be there, but we can’t afford to lose more people, let alone medics. Especially good ones. Get it?” he explained as warmly as he could muster.
“Ya, sarge, I understand.” You reply with a weak smile.
He gave you an encouraging nod and walked to the shower tent. You realized you were about to be surround by dozens of naked men and should probably head back to the bunks before you see too much.
~~~~~~~
Back at CP, Luz was unpacking what looked to be dozens of chocolate bars and candies sent from the Post Exchange from Stateside. His Easy Company brothers progressively encircling him like vultures trying to convince him to share as he counted them to record for inventory.
“Goddamn it, Johnny, you’re breaking my heart, I’m telling ya!” Luz started.
“Come on, George, just give me, I don’t know, 10, 15 bars.” Martin begged.
Luz slammed down a small pack of gum on the surface of the table, “Here, Juicy Fruit! Happy?”
Another soldier walked in behind Cobb and Martin, “Just got report of movement. 1st Sergeant Lipton wants you to lay a few bazooka rounds into a house across the river.”
“You’d think we’d get just one Hershey bar-“ Martin complained disregarding the soldier’s report.
“Come on, Luz, you’re 1st platoon at heart.” Cobb pushed.
“Jesus, Cobb, there’s not enough-“ Luz explained.
Liebgott entered the room with you right behind him. Webster and LT Jones entered not too long after you.
“Whoa, Hershey bars!!” Joe exclaimed.
“Where!?” you ask trying to look over Joe’s shoulder on your tiptoes.
Luz rolled his eyes, “Jesus Christ!”
“Wait your turn Liebgott, Y/L/N.” Cobb commanded.
“Yeah, yeah, who they for?” Liebgott dismissed.
“Not you! Not even for Y/F/N!” Luz established sternly.
You furrow your eyebrows at him, “I am offended, George! Have I not taken care of you when you needed it?”
“Yeah, and so has Doc but I don’t see him in here asking for handouts.” He replied.
“Oh, come on, George, one bar for me and Y/F/N, we’ll share one.” Joe pushed.
“No! There’s not enough to go around!” Luz claimed.
“Hey, big mouth, give the kid a Hershey bar.” A familiar voice projected across the room.
Everyone looked up and saw Frank Perconte back from the aid station after receiving a bullet by the Germans in his left buttocks.
The guys laughed collectively.
“You gotta be shittin’ me!” Luz said with a wide smile.
“Look who it is!” Joe added.
“What’s up guys? I like what you did with the place, George.” Perconte jested.
“Yeah, yeah, I did good. How you feelin’?”
“As long as you keep your hands off my ass, I’ll be fine.”
Luz chuckled, “Here have a Hershey.”
He tossed a candy bar across the room to Frank.
“He gets a fuckin’ Hershey bar?” Joe protested.
“Well, he got shot in the ass!” Luz retorted.
Martin walked over to Perconte, “Did I tell you to stick your big ass out in the wind?”
“No! But I expect a little sympathy from you, right?” Frank repsonded.
“Yeah, should I rub it for ya?” Martin teased trying to spank his left butt cheek.
Perconte quickly shuffled to the side, “Get the fuck outta here!”
“Can you believe this guy? I try to get him out of the fuckin’ war, he comes straight back!” Martin stated.
“Yeah, well, that’s not what I heard. I heard the Krauts are finished.” Frank said.
“Yeah, well, just to make sure, we gotta row across the fucking river tonight, grab a few, and ask them in person.” Joe explained.
Frank’s disappointment surfaced across his face.
“Ya kidding me?”
Joe shook his head, “Wish I was. Welcome back, Frank.”
~~~~~~~
At 1700 back at CP later that day, a briefing was to be held by Capt Winters about the upcoming patrol for that night. The soldiers listed on the roster to go sat around a long dining room oak table with LT Jones standing awkwardly off to the side.
With Capt Speirs’ and Lipton’s permission, you also attended the briefing, standing across the room where you had a clear view of Joe sitting at the head of the table. You could see the guys secretly whispering their opinions to eachother about LT Jones leading the mission instead of Malarkey.
“No way. Not on his first day.” Grant stated.
Joe rubbed his bottom lip thoughtfully, “Well, do you see any other officer here?”
Tumblr media
Webster, standing behind Joe’s chair, crossed his arms, then looked at Lt Jones sympatheticlly, knowing the frustrations of being doubted for being “the new guy.” Another handful of Easy soldiers entered the room.
“Who’s in charge of this bullshit?” one of them asked. He looked over his shoulder at LT Jones. “No he ain’t.” he determined outwardly.
“Well, if he ain’t, it’s you, Chuck. Or Shifty, or Mo.” Babe asserted.
“Well, that would be better.” Joe appended.
You feel your stomach twist into knots at his words. And as if he felt your anxiousness, he shifted his attention to you, meeting your gaze across the room. He gave you his signature infectious Liebgott grin, and you couldn't help but smile back.
“Ten-hut!” Jones called out to bring the room to attention as Captain Winters walked into the room.
“At ease.” Winters instructed the men.
Winters explained that they were to cross the river in four rubber boats with LT Jones, the ranking officer will go along as an observer. Sergeant Martin was to lead the patrol in Malarkey’s place. He assured the guys that the battalion will be covering their withdrawal with the POW’s, and were to utilize the whistles provided to signal to them to blast the outpost after they’ve safely returned to the boats.
“Remember, it’s about prisoners,” Winters reiterated firmly, “-Don’t pop the first thing that moves.”
Winters flashed a brief glance at Liebgott before continuing.
“Clear?”
The men mutually responded, “Yes, sir.”
“Good. Picked your assault team?” he asked Martin.
“McClung, Liebgott, Sisk, Cobb, Garcia, and Webster, as translator. The rest of you guys, a base of fire with Sergeant Grant. You speak German, right, Webster?”  Martin bellowed at Webster across the table.
“Yeah, a little bit.” Webster replied meekly.
Not before wishing his men good luck, Winters made his exit.
“A little German?” Joe began, “-his German’s as good as mine. And Y/F/N’s.”
Joe motioned with his head towards you. You look at the floor somewhat flattered, but also frustrated that two soldiers who speak German would be going on this mission when they really only needed one. This thought had you pushing down angry tears.
Coincidently, Webster had the same thoughts.
As you file outside with the guys out of CP, you immediately head back to the barracks so Joe wouldn't see you upset before he left. Webster approached Capt Winters, Capt Speirs, Martin, and LT Jones.
“Sir?”
“Yes?” Winters acknowledged.
“Liebgott and I, we both speak German. You said fifteen men, there’s sixteen of us, including two translators.” Webster elluded.
“Well, fine,” Speirs began, “Hey, Liebgott. You wanna sit this one out?”
Joe’s obvious elation displayed on his face, “Yes, sir,” he looked at Web, “Thanks, buddy!”

~~~~~~~
You weren’t the type to take being treated like a doormat. You were raised to find your place amongst others regardless of gender. You earned your respect because you did your job and you did it well, not because you were pretty and the guys wanted to bed you.
It was heavily frowned upon that women be on the front lines alongside men, but when nurses and medics started to get caught in the crossfire, they resorted to allowing females to do just about everything men did to fill the gaps. You had been assigned to Easy Company right after Toccoa, and most of them were less than receptive to say the least.
Eugene Roe was grateful to have an extra set of hands. Don Malarkey, Skip Muck, and George Luz were very taken with your sense of humor so they warmed up to you rather quickly. Joe Toye, Bill Guarnere, and Babe Roe took some time, but when you tackled Bill to avoid getting blown up by enemy artillery, their demeanor towards you made a complete 360.
Tumblr media
Easy accepted you as one of their own…except for one: Joseph Liebgott. He was the most ornery son of a bitch you ever met. He always found a reason to trash talk you, or find fault in anything you did. All because you were a ‘broad,’ as he referred to you. The guys tried to defend you but his opinion never changed about you.
You learned to just avoid him unless he needed medical attention. He did alright not getting hurt up until you guys posted in Schoonderlogt, Holland in October 1944. He had been on patrol late one night and returned with an angry gash on the right side of his neck. One of the other patrolmen they brought back, Alley, had been hit by German gunfire and needed immediate attention.
They set Alley onto a table for when Doc got there
"Boyle, get Doc." Winters instructed then looked at Liebgott, "Where?"
"Crossroads." Liebgott replied. You notice he took a dressing and pressed it against his neck.
"Well, if it wasn't for your loud mouth-" he started to accuse Joe.
"-Hey, you know what? Back off!" Liebgott shot back as Roe pushed through the gaggle.
"Get the boots off, elevate...Lieb use the sulfur... Doc directed but noticed Joe’s neck.
“Lieb, go see Y/L/N and get that checked out.” Doc added.
“Yeah, no thanks, Doc, I’m good.” Liebgott said all too quickly with disdain.
“Joe, I wasn’t askin’ ya. It needs to be cleaned and dressed properly, it can get infected then you’ll have a bigger problem to deal with that will take you off the line. Go. I ain’t got enough hands to help ya.” Doc said sternly.
Liebgott released an irritable huff before pushing through the group to find where you were.
You had already grabbed gauze, dressings and sanitizing fluid when you heard Doc scold Joe about getting his neck looked at. He sat on a bale of straw waiting for you to tend to him. You spread out the supplies and examine his neck wound. You reach out to gently move his head to the left to get more light on it and he dodged your touch.
“What the fuck are you doin’?” He asked harshly.
“I was moving your head where I had more light on the wound. Why are you so squirrely?” You ask.
“Oh, I don’t know, because I just got shot at by a bunch of fuckin’ Krauts!” He replied sarcastically as he glared at you.
“Ok well then let’s get this fixed, shall we?” You returned with as much calmness in your voice as you could muster.
You press the cloth with the antiseptic onto his laceration and he pulled back upon feeling the sting.
“Ack! THAT HURT!” He barked.
“If you’d hold still, it wouldn’t hurt as much!!”You bit back.
You were over his childish behavior towards you.
“Just get it over with.” He grumbled, finally maintaining his composure.
You made your hands busy on his neck, wrapping the dressing like a scarf around his neck after you cleaned it. Thank goodness you didn’t need to stitch it, that would’ve been hell for both of you with his attitude.
“There. You’re good.”
“Fantastic.” He replied without a thank you.
He stood up and trudged off to join the rest of Easy for the return to Crossroads to reclaim the position. The patrol had been gone all night into the following morning, but they had eventually took victory. That evening, Winters allowed the men an evening of enjoyment at a local pub in the town to boost morale.
The men had worn their dress uniforms, each looking handsome and ready to mingle with the local women and vice versa. You hadn’t dressed up since graduating Toccoa and even then, you hadn’t been with Easy Company then, so this would be the first time they ever saw you in dress uniform,
“Hey! Get a load of this!” Toye called out to the guys when you breezed through the front door.
Liebgott standing at the bar looked over his shoulder upon feeling the cold air on the back of his neck. His jaw dropped when his eyes landed on you. He scanned your figure from head to toe.
Hair clean and perfumed pulled back into a neat fashionable bun and a face with fresh make-up and painted lips. And those gams (legs) emerging from the pencil skirt and heels and of course a clean white medic brassard displaying the Red Cross around the left bicep. You almost had the entire room at a complete standstill when you walked in.
“…Woah.” Joe whispered to himself, unaware that Talbert was near by.
“Not bad, eh, Lieb?” Tab teased.
Tumblr media
He grimaced at Floyd and turned back to the bar to drink his beer.
The night was filled with laughter, darts, dancing, and liquor. Most of Easy had at least one dance around the room with you to favorites like Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, and The Andrew Sisters. You had just finished a dance with Toye sometime around midnight when a soldier from Dog Company had approached you.
“May I have this dance?” He asked politely with a slight bow.
Joe, standing with Buck, Luz, Babe, and Toye, watched with intensity from the dart boards.
“Maybe the next song.” You reply kindly, having just sat down for the first time in an hour.
“Come on, doll, ain’t no time like the present, right?” He insisted yanking you be the arm to the dance floor.
Liebgott’s clenched jaw and furrowed eye brows caught the attention of Toye.
“Hey, uh, you ok there, Lieb?”
Joe looked at Toye inquisitively.
“Yeah, why?”
“Well, you look a little…pissed.” Toye said plainly.
“Well, I ain’t.” Joe retorted.
He looked back at the dance floor to see where you were but was suddenly concerned he couldn’t find you right away. He saw the unknown soldier had taken you to the bar to get you a drink.
He handed you a pint and insisted you drink the whole thing.
“You said you could drink me under the table, so prove it!” He said.
“Fine, just this once.” You accepted.
You started to chug the pint, but when you started to lower the glass before it was empty, the soldier tilted the bottom up so you’d keep drinking. You finished and propped the glass open side down on the surface of the bar.
“Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go back to my-“ you started before the soldier grabbed your upper arm.
“Oh we ain’t done here, honey.” He declared.
You tried to pull yourself out of his grasp but he pulled you in by the waist to hold you close.
“Get your meat hooks off of me.” You warned through clenched teeth.
“Or what?” He mocked.
“Or you’ll have half of Easy raining down on you.”
You hear a gravelly voice behind the brute soldier. He turned and there stood Joe Liebgott squaring up to him. Behind him Toye, Malarkey, Guarnere, and Luz.
“Come on, guys, there’s enough ladies here to go around, why can’t I have a little fun with this one?”
“Because she don’t wanna have fun with you.” Joe shot back, “Let her go.”
The soldier released your arm, as Liebgott gently tugged you behind him by your wrist.
“Enjoy the rest of your evening.” Liebgott said to him as they all walked with you to the dart boards.
Suddenly you feel Joe’s hand on the small of your back, guiding you to a more secluded spot in the back of the pub.
“What the fuck is the matter with you??” He sneered at you, positioning you against the wall to talk to you.
“Excuse me?”
“You fuckin’ heard me. Why would you put yourself in a position like that? That guy could’ve walked out with you easily with as much as you drank tonight.” He lectured.
“How do you know how much I’ve been drinking? And what business is it of yours who I’m interacting with anyway?” You returned crossing your arms.
Joe took in a deep breath through his nose as his anger started to elevate in his chest.
“If I wasn’t watching out for you, you would’ve gotten yourself into some real shit.”
He leaned in placing a hand against the wall you leaned on. His face hovering centimeters from your own. You feel his breath on your face, and notice his pupils blown out from what you thought was hate and detestation for you.
Tumblr media
His eyes undressed you from your red lips down to your fitted blouse then looked into your eyes. Your breathe started to hasten, causing your chest to heave.
“You nervous?” Joe questioned.
Your breathe caught in your throat.
“-no.” You breathed.
He moved closer to you, pinning you against the wall as your chests touched. Your arms relaxed to your sides as your nails dug into the brick behind you. You were, indeed, very nervous. And he knew it.
The scowl Joe had slowly curled into a mischievous grin.
“I think you are.” He whispered confidently as his hand cupped your cheek.
Your eyelashes fluttered, “Wh-what are you doing?” You managed to ask.
His thumb stroked your cheek, “Admiring the view.”
You released an exhale after holding your breath for almost 5 minutes.
“I thought you hated me?”
He brushed his nose against yours, “No. As a matter of fact, I always liked ya.”
“Then why-“
Before you could finish your sentence, he closed the gap between you, locking onto your lips like it was his dying wish.
You snake your arms carefully around his neck as he pulled you into him by your waist. You slack you jaw open to allow his tongue to run along your lips. You nip his bottom lip playfully causing his hips to thrust into you.
You yanked at his jacket, pulling him into you again to feel his hard on against you. He groaned into your mouth.
“What are you doin’ doll?” He asked with a devilish grin.
“I really don’t know but-“ you pull him in again, bringing his earlobe gently between your teeth then whisper, “we can’t stop now.”
“Let’s get outta here.” Joe suggested ushering you out the back door.
~~~~~~~
You snuck off to one of the abandoned homes down the street from where you were and barely got through the door before you were undoing his belt. You kicked of your shoes into darkness then made your way up a flight of stairs leaving pieces of your uniforms trailing the steps as you ascended.
When you were down to your slip and him down to his briefs, you scamper off to an open bedroom hoping he’d chase you…which he did. You kneeled on the bed waiting for him to come to you. He approached standing at the bedside.
You seductively crawled over to the edge of the bed and suckled a trail of kisses from his collar bone all the way down the waistband of his underwear. Joe inhaled deeply through is nostrils as he closed his eyes in ecstasy. You nip and licked at the sensitive area above his pubic line.
“Quit teasin’.” Joe purred.
“Or what?” You ask looking up at him through your lashes.
A joker like smile appeared across his face as he swiftly pushed you onto you back then crawled over you, caging you between his arms.
“You asked for it, sweeheart.” He proclaimed before locking onto your mouth again.
His hardened cock grinding into you, you wrap your legs around his waist to feel as much of his friction as possible. He pulls back and began pulling your slip over your head then sat back on his heels to remove his underwear.
He gaped at you laying in front of him. He ran his hand from your stomach up to one breast, groping it then repeating on the other. He hovered over you, enveloping one of your peaked nipples in his mouth. His tongue swirling over the tip while sucking had you writing beneath him. Sensing your pleasure he switched to the other, taking the tip between his teeth.
“Please, Lieb.” You beg.
“Joe.” He corrected.
You look at him.
“I want to hear you scream my name a hundred times before the end of the night.” He growled.
You beam at him, “Please, Joe.”
He palmed himself, pumping a few times before he lined himself up with your drenched opening. He glazed his tip with your wetness, groaning at the amount of saturation.
“I really did a number on you, didn’t I?” He goaded.
All you could do was smile coyly.
He pushed into you deliciously slow. You whimper, both of you feeling every bit of your tightness around him. He embraced you instinctively until he bottomed out. He pulled back gradually, then snapped his hips forward against you with a grunt.
“Jesus Christ, Y/F/N.”
“Please, Joe.” You implore quietly in his ear.
This triggers him as he begins spearing into you roughly. He sits up, propping your legs up where he can hold you around the thighs as he drives into, hitting that perfect spot so deep inside. You push against the headboard to steady yourself onto his dick, feeling that tightening feeling in your stomach as he chased your orgasm.
He watched your face expressions purposefully, feeding off how they changed as he switched up his pace.
“Joe…” you’d moan, spurring him on to go harder.
“Yeah, sweetheart, say it again.”
“My God, Joe…”
He brought his fingers to your clit, using your slick to vigorously rub the vulnerable bud as he continued to plunge in and out of you. He loved watching you get overstimulated as you try to paw at him to pull him back into kiss.
“Right there, Joe…keep goin’.” You lament.
“Yeah? Let it go, baby.” He leered as he railed into you at a heart stopping rate.
“Oh…my GOD, JOE!” You wailed as you dig your nails into his shoulders.
He kept his pace, making sure you ride out your high until the guttural noises that emitted from him as his hips started to stutter and his load coated your insides.
He remained on top of you and inside of you, holding you like a life line with sweat dripping from everywhere. Both of your breathing in sync, each of you trying to steady your heart rates.
After a moment, you decided to break the silence.
“That was…wow.”
Joe chuckled then rolled off of you as he positioned your head on his chest.
“Couldn’t have said it better myself, sweetheart.”

Chapter 9-It Ain't Over
Tumblr media
Summary: Easy is tasked to dismantle German outposts across the river and were to return with prisoners for interrogation. The mission is successful but not without another loss. When the Colonel tried to send the men back in, Winters unconventionally goes against the grain, allowing the men a night of rest instead of risking more unnecessary deaths.

February 1945/Night of POW Mission
American side of the river
Liebgott sits behind his M1919 Browning machine gun with his assistant gunner on a bombed-out landing at battalion headquarters right off the water, watching the rest of the platoon load into the boats on the riverbank. You sneak past the AG and sit next to Joe.
"Gams?? What the fuck are ya doin'?" he chided at you.
You roll your eyes, "Just checking on you two and seeing where the guys are." you respond quietly.
"Yeah, well, they ain't even crossed yet so get back downstairs, will ya? I don't want you out here if shit starts poppin' off." he scolded.
You sigh, "Fine, Joe, I just wanted to see you before anything happened, that's all."
You turned to leave but then hesitated. You looked over your shoulder at him with his back towards you. You return to him swiftly, grab his chin and plant a hasty peck on his cheek.
"Ich liebe dich, Joe Liebgott (g)(I love you, Joe Liebgott)." you say in a quick hush before you scamper off inside.
Joe grunted at you not knowing whether to be irritated or entertained,
"Du verdammte Füchsin (g)(You goddamn vixen)." he called after you before you could reach the stairs.
Basement of Battalion HQ
You and Doc sit together in the cellar of HQ, waiting and listening intensely for any gunfire exchange outside. Minutes feel like hours sitting there, as you sip on a tin cup of coffee.
Your leg is bouncing from anxiety, waiting for something to happen. Eugene reached across to you and grabbed your knee to stop your leg from jumping. You look up at him startled.
"You're too jittery. Lay off the coffee, Y/F/N." he said in his low soothing Cajun accent with a gentle smile.
You nod then smile back, placing your cup on the table next to you.
~~~~~~~
German side of the river
The patrol crosses the river in the inflatable boats. When they reach land, they strategically approach the building where German soldiers are posted. As Easy makes entry, Jackson rushes into the building too soon after throwing a grenade and is severely wounded.
Tumblr media
The rest of the guys then rush the building and captured three Germans. As they retreat with their prisoners, the remaining German forces open fire. One of the prisoners is hit and is left behind on the riverbank.
American side of the river
Joe sees his platoon scattering towards the boats as smoke and gunfire erupt from the German side. He shifts his line of fire, anxiously waiting to pull the trigger.
"Jesus Christ, come on. Blow the goddamn whistle!" he yelled.
Tumblr media
The sound of the whistle finally reaches Joe's ears. He lays heavy suppressive fire at the windows where he sees flashes from German MG-42s. He peppers the buildings back and forth, in hopes he's nailing each one dead center of their foreheads.
Basement of HQ
You and Doc hear an eruption of gunfire and shells dropping through the garden windows of the basement. You stand next to the little window listening hard for the yells and screams from your boys. Just then, you suddenly hear the faint call from the riverbank on the American side...
"WHERE'S THE MEDIC!?!?"
Alarmed, you look back at Eugene with wide, panicked eyes.
"No, Y/L/N." Doc said sternly.
He knew damn well what you were thinking, and he wasn't going to allow it. Not again.
You began to protest, "But they-"
"Y/F/N, NO!" he barked, "I'm not lettin' you run to danger again. Remember what happened in Ardennes?" He reminded you angrily.
Tumblr media
You look down shamefully at your boots. Suddenly the basement door abruptly swung open as the platoon started scrambling in.
"Wounded! We got wounded, come on!" Ramirez bellowed.
You swept papers and utensils off the nearest table to clear it for Jackson who was being carried in.
"Set him right here!" you call out.
Johnny Martin entered, "Get the Krauts back there, shake them down! Move! Move! McClung! Get on over to CP, let them know what we got!" he ordered.
Jackson lying flat on the table, his face bloody and raw from the neck up, began gagging on his own blood.
"Jesus, what the hell happened to him over there?!" you ask overwhelmed by the soldier’s appearance.
"Grenade went off right in front of him." Ramirez reported.
"Shit, his lungs are probably hemorrhaging. He can't breathe right." you confirm aloud.
Doc gently pushed you aside and lowered his ear to Jackson's mouth.
"Light. I need some light. Give me some light." Doc requested urgently.
Grant took his lighter and flipped it on. Doc held Jackson's mouth open by the chin, observing and listening for a few seconds as the poor soldier gurgled and whimpered.
"All right, look at the flame. Look at the flame. Ok, that's good." Doc instructed Jackson.
Tumblr media
The room became eerily quiet as they all watched Doc work.
"All right, let's get him outta here." Doc directed.
"I don't wanna die!" Jackson cried out.
He repeated these words tearfully over and over again as the platoon started to move him towards the door on a litter. Jackson started to grab at Doc, kicking off the surface as his choking worsened. The men set him down.
"He's gonna die!" one of the guys shrilled in horror.
"Hey, shut the hell up! You're upsetting him more!" You hiss over the sea of bellowing soldiers, while Jackson started to flail and kick in terror.
"Please help me, I don't wanna die!" He wallowed.
Doc tried to hold him steady on the stretcher, "Jackson, you're not gonna die! I need you to hang on!"
Jackson continued to bawl and throw an agonizing fit out of fear until the life drifted from his tearing eyes and his body fell limp. Doc sat up, dropping his helmet to his side with a huff of defeat leaving his mouth. He sat there, lost in his thoughts then looked up at you with frustration painted all over his face.
Tumblr media
You look around the room at rest of the guys until you see Martin. You shake your head, confirming he didn't make it. You take Babe's wool blanket he wrapped himself with and covered Jackson.
~~~~~~~
The following morning, the platoon hung out in the barracks, resting up after a long night. Webster entered the room with LT Jones.
"Jackson is dead." Webster announced.
Tumblr media
"Yeah, we heard." Joe replied from his bunk sitting above you.
"Yeah, well, they want another patrol tonight." Perconte added.
Joe shifted onto the mattress and laid against the pillow. You stood up angrily and walked out the room, down the stairs, and out the door to head to the basement back at HQ to be alone.
Tumblr media
With most of Easy at HQ later that day, Winters, Nixon and Speirs address the same patrol from the night before to discuss the next mission for that evening. You're in attendance once again, across the room where you can see Joe as you stood next to Eugene.
Winters opened the brief by stating how proud he was of the good work the platoon did last night then added that Col Sink was proud as well.
"-In fact, he's so proud he wants you to do another patrol across the river tonight."
The men remain resentfully silent. Joe lights a cigarette then shoots you an unamused glance as Winters continued.
"Any moment now, the outpost we hit last night will go up in flames. Means we have to venture farther into town this time. Captain Speirs, you have the map, please."
Speirs passes the map to Grant to display across the table.
"We have enemy movement here and here," Winters began as he pointed on the paper, "Which means this is our new house target here. We recovered all the boats. So, we'll be setting off from the same place we did last night."
"We're not changing the plan any, sir?" Martin spoke up.
"No. The plan is the same. It will be 0200 hours instead of 0100. Is that clear?" Winters asked.
The men shifted in discomfort, "Yes sir." they acknowledged collectively.
"Good, because I want you all to get a full night's sleep tonight. Which means in the morning, you will report to me that you made it across that river into German lines but were unable to secure any live prisoners-" he instructed as he looked around the room to see if the platoon was tracking what he was saying.
Everyone looked at him in disbelief. The man was really ordering you to disobey Col Sink’s orders.
"Understand?" he pushed cautiously as he scanned the room making eye contact with each of his men.
"Yes, sir." The men replied in unison. (Some of their responses sounding like a question, unsure this was actually happening).
"Good. Look sharp for tomorrow. We're moving off the line." Winters finalized as he left the room.
The guys all breathed their first sigh of relief since Holland. A few exchanged handshakes. Joe stood up from the table to rush over to you.
Tumblr media
"Did you just fucking hear that, Gams!?" His smile stretching from ear to ear revealing your favorite dimple on his left cheek.
You beam at him, "I did. He's a good man."
You wrap your arms around the back of Joe's neck, pulling him into a tight hug. He pressed you against him, burying his face into your neck. A couple of happy tears stream down your face.
"Can we just hold each other for the rest of our lives?" you utter softly in Joe's ear.
Joe chuckled, "That's my plan."
~~~~~~~
As the sun set that evening, Cobb distributed bottles of liquor he found in the cellar at HQ. Each man happily accepted the offer, taking hearty swigs from the bottles.
Luz hacked, pounding on his chest to soften the sting of what he just swallowed.
"Shit! *cough* What the hell is this Cobb?? Jesus Christ!" Luz choked.
"What's wrong, George? A little too strong for ya?" Cobb teased.
"This stuff will knock ya on your ass." Malarkey confirmed as he took another drink.
You walk into the room, and the entire platoon cheered. You stop in your tracks, almost alarmed by their response to you entering the room.
"What are you miscreants doing now?" you ask looking around the room at them.
"Nothin' we're just happy to see our songbird!" Babe yelled across the room.
"Hey, Y/F/N, sing us a little somethin' yeah??" Luz pleaded.
"No, George, I'm not-" you contested before all the men groaned and boo-ed expressing their disappointment.
"-I'm tired, guys! It's been a rough few days for all of us." you defended.
"Hey, Joe, come on. Get her to sing!" Babe resorted.
Liebgott hopped off the top bunk and approached you with his bottle. You deliver a look of skepticism to him as he closed in on you. He raised his eyebrow as he smiled mischievously at you.
"No, Joe." Is all you say.
"Gams, the boys just want you to sing a little lullaby so they can get a good night's sleep like the captain said." Joe justified.
"Winters never said anything about me singing you to sleep." you pointed out.
"True," Joe started, "but Webster didn't get to hear ya yet, and l’ve been tellin’ him how sweet my girl’s voice is. I wanna show you off."
You shake your head at him, "You're unbelievable."
"I know." Joe replied confidently.
You look around the room at all the expectant drunk faces of your boys.
"One song so you can sleep. Just one." you compromise.
"Don't get on a chair this time!" Luz called out.
You glare at him, then smile.
"Get comfortable you idiots." you say as you dim the lamps to set the mood.
"What are you gonna sing, Gams?" Joe whispered in your ear over your shoulder as he snaked his arms around your waist from behind.
"A piece from Laurel and Hardy's The Bohemian Girl. Thelma Todd was always one of my favorites.”
Joe hummed as he pecked your cheek. You smell the whiskey on his breath.
“Hm, ir hot aoykh a bisl shlogn di flash, tsi nit? (y)(Hm, you’ve been hitting the bottle a little, too, haven’t ya)?” You ask Joe, smiling at him skeptically.
Joe only grinned, his face glowing and his eyes droopy, sauced from drink, exhausted by the mission, and completely entranced by you.
“Ok, settle down, boys." you project through the room.
"Hey, Liebgott ain't in bed." Perconte protested.
You guide Joe to your bed and have him sit. You stand in the middle of the room so everyone can hear. Every pair of eyes and ears focus on you, waiting patiently for you to begin.
youtube
🎶 “I dreamt that I dwelt in marble halls,
With vassals and serfs at my side,
And of all who assembled within those walls,
That I was the hope and the pride.” 🎶
You serenade to your platoon, watching their heads lull and their eyes flutter. You make a round around the room to each soldier, touching a shoulder here or patting another on the head over there, making a personal connection to each one to bring a sense of comfort amongst them as you near the end of the song.
🎶 “And I dreamt that one of that noble host
Came forth my hand to claim.
But I also dreamt, which charmed me most,
That you lov'd me still the same...”🎶
You come back to Joe who is laying across your mattress zeroed in on you with adoration behind his eyes. He beamed up at you from your pillow when you start combing your fingers through his hair as you finish your song just for him.
🎶”That you lov'd me, you lov'd me still the same
That you lov'd me, you lov'd me still-“🎶
You seat yourself on the side of your bed next to him.
🎶”-the same.“🎶
The room is quiet, with the gentle snores and breathes of the guys sound asleep in their bunks. Joe took your free hand and started to pull you towards him as he sat up to meet you half way for a kiss-
“That was incredible, Y/L/N.” You hear Webster compliment from the bunk across from Liebgott’s.
You look over at him and smile, “Thanks, Web. Get some sleep, buddy.”
“Yeah, can’t you see we’re busy over here?” Joe sneered.
Webster chuckled and turned towards the wall to make his back face you.
You look back to Joe, whose face was a hair away from yours.
“That wasn’t very nice.” You giggled.
Joe nudged his nose against yours, “Any second I can get with my girl is precious, I don’t want to waste it.” He purred.
You lean forward, kissing his lips softly. Joe’s faultless ability to lock onto your lips as he tilts his head to deepen his kiss always left you craving for more. You try to pull back but he holds you in place so you don’t go too far.
“We should sleep, too, Joe.”
A devilish smirk appeared across his face, “One of these days, Gams-“ he started without finishing.
You smile coyly and laugh, “I don’t mean to get you riled up. But we’re not getting away with anything in a room full of people.”
Joe shook his head and sighed, “Komm her, du Füchsin (g)(Get over here, you vixen)."
You scoot onto the bed laying across his chest as he enveloped you in his arms. He kissed the top of your head as you nuzzle into him.
"Liebe dich sehr (g)(Love you so much)." Joe uttered to you.
"Liebe dich mehr (g)(Love you more)." you whisper back, squeezing him.
~~~~~~~
Adrennes Forest, Belgium
January 2, 1945
Easy company combed through the trees of the forest in the relentless cold near the target town of Foy.
Tumblr media
Eventually, Easy encountered sporadic machine-gun fire causing a few casualties. After Hoobler’s kill shot of a German on horseback, he finally gets a Lugar and comes back to the guys to show it off to them.
Tumblr media
LT Compton and Lipton are having a chat about where LT Dike has disappeared to while Malarkey and Shifty are digging a foxhole nearby.
“-I haven’t seen him all day. I didn't see him coming through the woods, and I have to figure out how we ended up with-”
Lipton respectfully interrupted Buck, “-Two wounded.”
“Who?” Buck asked concerned stopping in his tracks.
“Brown and Stevenson.”
 “Goddam it-” Buck looked away rolling his eyes, “Where’s Dike!? Where the hell does he ever go?”
Tumblr media
“-I don’t know, but I wish he’d stay the hell there.”  You chime in approaching the first sergeant and LT.
“Hey, Y/L/N.” Lipton greeted.
“Would be nice if he took LT Shames with him, too-” Malarkey added.
“-Shut up, guys.” Lip cautioned.
“Shutting up, Sarge.” Malarkey acknowledged.
You nod to Lip before addressing Buck, “Sir, Brown and Stevenson are stable. Me and Doc got them all patched up and ready for transport, they’re gonna be fine.” You report.
Buck gave you an approving nod, obviously relieved.
Suddenly a single gunshot sounded off too close for comfort and you all scrambled to the nearest half-dug foxhole with Malarkey, Shifty, Lip and Buck.
“Patrol?” Malarkey asked.
“No, we would’ve heard.” Lip replied.
“One man...maybe a sniper.” Buck added.
“That was no rifle.” Shifty confirmed.
“What do you see, Shift?” Buck asked.
“Nobody out there.” Shifty said.
“Are you sure?” Buck questioned.
“Uh-huh.”
One of the guys came running up. “Ah Jesus, it’s Hoob! He’s shot!” He yelled out.
“Sniper!?” Buck called back.
“Nah, nah, he—he shot himself. MEDIC!”
“Jesus Christ, I’m right here!” You shouted out over Lip’s shoulder as you leap out of the hole running.
You get to Hoobler with Perconte kneeling over him.
“It’s my fucking leg!” Hoobler cries out.
“What happened!?” Lip asked.
“What were you doing with a loaded gun in your pants!?” Buck asked Hoobler finding the Lugar next to him.
“It just went off! I wasn’t touchin’ it or nothin’! I wasn’t touchin’ it, I swear!” Hoobler responded panicked.
“Hoob, hold still dammit, I gotta cut the pants!” you bellowed at him as calmly as your voice allowed.
You lift the fabric away from Hoobler’s skin where blood soaked through his right thigh and began feverishly slicing through his uniform. It was clear by the color and saturation of the blood that he hit the main artery.
“It hurts like a son of a bitch!” Hoobler shrieked.
“We gotta pack this to make it stop.” you think outloud more so to yourself.
You pull off his belt in one fleeting motion and apply it above the wound as a tourniquet and start tightening it. Hoobler lets out a cry of pain and starts rocking side to side.
“Goddam it, hold him down! I can’t get this tight enough to stop the bleeding if he’s moving around like that!” you tell the other five men present.
You secure the belt, then dump your bag to get the sulfur and clean gauze to start packing the bullet wound.
“Keep him warm!” you tell them as you dash the sulfur onto the thigh and start stuffing with the dressing.
Doc rushed in sliding onto his knees next to you.
“Let me see it.” Doc said pushing Malarkey aside, “Y/L/N, let me get in there so I can get the bullet out.” he said noticing you were becoming fatigued.
Doc shifted over and started working Hoobler. Buck removed his coat and put it across Hoobler to keep him warm.
The guys started talking to him to keep him from passing out.
“How we doin’, Doc!?” Buck asked nervously.
“I can’t see a thing. We gotta get him back to an aid station.” Doc stated.
“Well let’s get ready to move him then!” you say with your voice shakier than you had intended.
Doc still frantically working on the leg, the rest of the boys suddenly fell silent.
“-Doc...Doc!” Buck barked.
Eugene looked up to see Hoobler laying lifeless.
Tumblr media
Lip and Doc stare in horror panting, trying to catch their breath. You stand over all of them with a blank stare, lost in your own thoughts over what had just occurred.
“Dead...all because of his ‘treasured’ fucking Lugar...’” you thought to yourself.
This revelation made you angry. Your emotions began to boil over as you voiced your recent thoughts outwardly.
“All because of a precious Lugar!” you roared.
The six men look at you startled. You met their shocked gazes with your eyes filled to the brim with tears. As they start to spill over, you continue.
Tumblr media
“Didn’t even need a fuckin’ Kraut to do it for him, did he!?” Your voice cracks as you ask them rhetorically, gesturing towards Hoobler.
The men all look down at the expired soldier.
You inhale loudly, tilting your head back and sniffling to try to keep the discharge from expelling from your nose. (Not very lady like).
“Malarkey,” you say sharply in a motherly tone, side eyeing him.
Don snaps his head up to look at you, jaw slightly slacked waiting for you to speak, “-if I fucking catch you risking your life looking for a Lugar after today, I will shoot you myself.” you stated harshly.
Don nodded and looked back down as you turned on your heel and stormed off.
~~~~~~~
Later, Lipton found you spaced out in a foxhole by yourself. He approached cautiously, recognizing the distant look on your face and not wanting to spook you. You sensed his presence and looked over at him with emptiness in your eyes.
“Hey, Y/F/N.” he began. Your face remains as you looked straight ahead again.
Lip sat on the edge of your foxhole, allowing his feet to dangle inside.
“You ok?” His voice was gentle and worried.
You only nod.
“Listen, uh, when you’re ready, I need you to come with me to Captain Winters to explain what happened. Just, whenever you’re ready, k?” he waited, “You know where to find me.”
It was only until he started to walk away you found whatever voice you had left.
“Sarge, we can go now.” you call out as you slowly make your way out of the hole.
As you stand before Winters and Nixon retelling the story, your voice begins to strain fighting back anger and choking down tears.
“Hoob had so many layers on him we couldn’t tell how bad the bleeding was, sir.” you pause and look down at your boots, “He was already gone by the time we got him to the aid station. The bullet went through the artery.” you finished.
“It wouldn’t have made a difference if you had known.” Nixon tried to assure.
You look at him perplexed; your face twisted up with that same rage beginning to rise in your chest.
“With all due respect, that’s where you’re wrong, sir.” you raise your voice, still trying to maintain your customs and courtesies towards him.
Winters, Nixon and Lipton shared wide eyed glances.
Tumblr media
“Y/F/N, maybe you should-” Lip began.
“-No! This was avoidable. If Hoobler hadn’t had that Lugar, he’d be alive now!” you stated bitterly. The men were speechless as you continued
“I hear the guys go around talking about what fucking trophies they’re going to bring home from this ‘Kraut’ or that ‘Jerry,’ and you know what, sir? It makes me sick to my stomach! Do you know Perconte hasover a dozen wrist watches from dead German soldiers he’s been collecting since Normandy!? At least!” you pause to look away, to shield the view of your tears.
You release along sigh, “And now, because of a stupid German handgun that he considered a “trophy” is the reason that Hoobler is dead. No trophy or treasure is worth that.” you concluded shaking your head.
You look back at the three men with your glossed over eyes, waiting for a tentative punishment for not asking for permission to speak freely before going off.
Winters, Nixon and Lipton exchanged concerned glances.
“Y/F/N,” Winters approached you, “I’ve been noticing for awhile that the weight of the war has been anchoring you down. It gets to all of us at some point, so it’s fine to get it off your chest. As long as you keep pushing forward and lean on the guys for support.”
Tumblr media
“Just make sure when you lose it that it’s only with us. I don’t think Sink would put up with that.” Nixon joked.
You scoffed flashing a weak smile at him.
“You’re doing good work with us. Nobody has any complaints.” Winters added.
You nod, “Thank you, sir, that means a lot coming from you.” you replied.
“In the meantime, go find Liebgott and stay with him until you’re smiling again. That kid always has something to say that makes the guys laugh.” Nixon said with a wink.
“Yes, sir.” you respond with a slight grin before leaving the three men under the tarp overhang.
~~~~~~~
Tumblr media
You didn’t go to Joe, though. You went back to your foxhole to be alone. As the sun was setting, the air became chillier, and you found yourself uncontrollably shivering. You started to regret not finding Joe to get some extra warmth from him in his foxhole.
And as if he heard you thinking about him, Joe appears crouching over your foxhole. He remained quiet for a minute to see if it was safe to join you, but you keep your face buried in your folded arms covered by your wool blanket. Joe thought he heard you either whimpering or crying, but as he leaned in closer, he discovered you were actually humming a song to yourself.
“Hey.” Joe said softly.
You look up at him with tired blood shot eyes, red nose and peeling chapped lips. You had been crying silently in that hole all afternoon and you knew Joe would know. You attempt a weak smile then rest your chin on your knees.
Joe hopped in and plopped down next to you. He studied you for a few seconds then nudged you with his elbow. You side eye him without any additional response.
“I just talked to Lip-” he began.
You looked down.
“-He asked me if you had come to see me. Had to tell him no. He told me what happened, and that Nixon told you to come see me.” he continued.
You remained quiet, shifting from your chin to your cheek looking away from Joe.
Liebgott moved closer to you putting his arm across your shoulders. His closeness made you tremble. You wanted to lean into his chest to get warm, but you stayed put.
Joe tilted his head, “Why didn’t you come to me, Gams?” he asked, almost sounding offended.
His fingers gently gliding back and forth on your shoulder, he anxiously waits for you to answer him.
“I-I don’t know...” you muttered as you sniffled.
Joe reached for your shoulders to turn you towards him. You rotate entirely around as his hands guided your face to his. You finally look at him with tears cascading down your cheeks. Sensing how distraught you still were, he pulled you into him, embracing you tightly as he leaned against the dirt wall. You curl into him resting your head right over his chest.
“I gotchyu, doll-” he reassured then kissed the top of your head. “I’m right here.”
Joe held you, allowing you to soak his coat with your tears while you silently bawled as you wrap your arms around his torso, holding him like a lifeline. He didn’t know what else he could possibly do for you, so he occasionally planted a kiss on the side or top of your head while kneading your back or arms to give you any sort of relief.
This lasted for awhile until you were drained of tears to shed. You shifted upward to lay your head into the crook of Joe’s neck to be as close to him as possible.
“So,” Joe started, “did you really tell Malark that you’d shoot him?” he asked.
For the first time all day, you laughed. Your laughter is music to Joe’s ears as he embraces you tighter then kisses your forehead.
“I sure did.” you respond, your voice raspy and strained since you hardly said a complete sentence for hours.
“Pretty sure you scared him out of looking for that Lugar for his nephew.” Joe stated.
“Good.” you responded.
He rested his chin on top of your head.
“What were you singin’ anyway?” he asked.
You sighed, “Tu-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral.”
“Tu ra what?” Joe laughed trying to look at you.
You giggle, “By Bing Crosby? From the movie ‘Going My Way?’ You don’t know it?”
“Ah sure, I think I’ve heard it once or twice-” he responded while pulling you in closer, “-maybe you can refresh my memory?” he added.
“I don’t know, Joe, my voice is shit right now from crying.”
“Sing quietly then. Come on, for me?” he urged winking at you.
You couldn’t resist the man. You obliged him with a gentle grin.
🎶“Tu-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral-” you began subtly, “Tu-ra-loo-ra-li...”🎶
You softly serenade Joe the Irish lullaby until you drift off to sleep in his arms. He stayed with you overnight in your foxhole. His steady heartbeat and rhythmic breathing soothed your inner turmoil, allowing you the deepest sleep you’ve had in months.
~~~~~~~
You wake up sometime in the middle of the night, looking up to see Joe knocked out still holding onto you as he was before you fell asleep on him.
You move your head up and press your lips into his neck, gently placing a kiss right over the scar left behind from the wound at crossroads. He shuddered, then woke up alarmed, looking at you with hooded droopy eyes.
“Heeeeey now, Gams-” he cautioned flashing a half-concerned expression. “Whaddya tryin’ to do?” he said through a yawn with a nervous laugh while rubbing his neck where you had kissed him.
“What?” you respond partially entertained by his reaction.
He looked at you skeptically, “Come on, you know whatchyu did.” he rebuked, taking an opportunity to stretch.
You shrug at him with a coy smirk. He smiled at you cynically.
“You keep doing that shit and we’re going to have to find something to cover this foxhole, so nobody sees what I’d like to do you.” he stated, his voice gravelly and low.
You gasp as you back off him, “Joseph Liebgott!”
He chuckled, “Just giving you a fair warning, sweetheart. Don’t think I won’t.” he replied with a wink.
Tumblr media
You felt a wave of heat rush over your entire body as you stared at him in shock by his honesty.
You scoffed, “Noted. I’ll be more mindful where and when I put my kisses.”
“Mm-hm...” Joe hummed side eyeing you suspiciously.
You feel yourself blush as you bashfully smile back at him. He pulled you back onto him.
“Go back to sleep you little tsrus (troublemaker).” he whispered in Yiddish, then kissed your forehead.
~~~~~~~
October 1944
Easy Company set up in an abandoned barn as a headquarters and aid station in Schoonderlogt, Holland. Most of Easy Company had been inside awaiting the return of the reconnaissance patrol that left at sunset to see if any Germans were near the village. Liebgott leading the mission had been gone for several hours.
Eugene insisted you get some sleep, but you only sat in the bunk, your mind too busy to even close your eyes. Talbert with his newfound companion, Trigger (a German Shepard ironically), was a nice distraction while Joe was gone. As you were petting the dog, the barn door burst open alarming everyone and bringing everyone to their feet.
“Penetration!” one of the soldiers called out carrying another soldier injured.
“It’s Alley!” Talbert yelled.
“Alley’s hurt!” Liebgott shouted.
“Boyle, get Doc.” Winters instructed then looked at Liebgott, “Where?”
“Crossroads.” Liebgott replied. You notice he took a dressing and pressed it against his neck.
“Liebgott-” you called to him, but another soldier interrupted you.
“Well, if it wasn’t for your loud mouth-” he started to accuse Joe.
You tried again but louder, “Lieb-”
“-Hey, you know what? Back off!” Liebgott shot back as Roe pushed through the gaggle.
Tumblr media
“Get the boots off, elevate...Lieb use the sulfur...” Doc directed.
“JOE!” You barked over the commotion.
“Goddam it, WHAT?” He snarled back at you with a heavy look of annoyance.
“Get over here and let me look at your neck.” you directed sternly.
“It’s just a scratch.” He dismissed.
You huff audibly, losing your patience and giving him a side glance.
“Joe, let her take a look. We got this over here.” Doc insisted.
Liebgott sighed reluctantly rolling his eyes and made his way to you.
He stood tall in front you, refusing to look you in the eyes as you gently directed his head by the chin to his left to expose the injured site where he still held the dressing. You know he was trying to hide how bad it really was, so you decided to kill him with kindness to get him to do what you needed to do to help him.
Your voice sweet and subtle, “Joe...”
He hummed in response.
“Move your hand. Please?”
He quickly looked down at you, no smile or any real sign of emotion, just searching your eyes for something unknown to you. You feel your eyes widen as this unexpected attention from Joe unnerved you. It’s not a look that you experienced from him before. He almost looked like a ravenous animal.
You stood your ground, staring back at him expectantly waiting for him to remove his hand from his neck.
His hand slowly dropped without breaking eye contact.
You make your hands busy with the messy dressing on his neck and see an angry laceration, but not deep enough to make it life threating. You were less worried, but it still needed attention.
“You’re lucky.” You stated.
“Am I?” he replied curtly.
You ignored his cold response.
“It wasn’t deep enough to affect the artery, so you won’t bleed out, but I’m still going to dress it right so you don’t get an infection.” you explained.
“Great.” his tone unenthusiastic and sarcastic. Again, you chose to remain silent. You weren’t going to give him the satisfaction by taking his bait to argue.
“Ok, Joe, you’re good.” you tell him, running your thumb affectionately along his jawline.
He felt goosebumps rise on his skin from your soft touch and shot you a look of confusion. His eyebrows furrowed and his mouth slightly open, you thought he was going to say something. He thought he was going to say something too, but he stood there gaping at you, breathing heavy again searching your face for something unknown to either of you. You meet his perplexed look with one of your own and squint your eyes at him wondering what it was you did wrong to earn such a response from him.
His jaw tightened as he closed his mouth and softened his eyes. No smile, no sign of affection, he nods to you then turned on his heel to collect his gear when Winters announced they were heading to the crossroads to re-engage with the Germans there to gain control of that position.
You were utterly dumbfounded by how Joe treated you. You know he can get moody and explosive when his adrenaline races like that. He had a deep-rooted hatred for the Germans and was probably pissed he got nicked by one of them in the field, and now he was out for revenge. His anger clouded his judgement, and you suffered the blunt end of his attitude even though you had nothing to do with it.
And it had nothing to do with you. He felt terrible for not at least saying ‘thank you’ before he left. He turned his back on you after you cared for his wound so gently and attentively, and he hated himself for it after walking out of that barn. He had hurtling thoughts of doubt, regret...sentiment. He couldn’t turn back now, though. He was on his way to deal with the Krauts that had the audacity to attack him and his team that day.
~~~~~~~
Easy Company took victory at the crossroads the following morning. The Germans fled leaving dozens of their comrades killed or seriously wounded. Eleven of them are captured. The Americans on their side count one dead and 22 wounded.
Winters approaches an angry Liebgott taking potshots at the still-living Germans crawling over the bodies of their dead comrades, trying to escape the field.
“Joe?”
Liebgott continued to pick off Germans like a turkey shoot.    “-Joe, knock it off!” Winters ordered
“Goddam it, what?” Liebgott barked back.
Tumblr media
Winters noticed his neck bandages were saturated with his own blood.
“You’re bleeding.” Winters identified.
“Ah, it's nothin', Cap.” Liebgott replied bluntly.
“Take these prisoners to CP and get cleaned up.” Winters instructed.
Liebgott looked a little too eager, “Yes, sir. Come on, Kraut boys.”
Believing that a furious Liebgott can't be trusted, Winters orders him to drop all his ammo and removes all but one round from Joe's rifle telling him that killing one prisoner will prompt the others to attack and possibly kill him and escape.
“I want all prisoners alive.” Winters reminded.
Joe paused before replying, “Yes sir,” resentfully.
Tumblr media
~~~~~~~
Liebgott burst through the barn door, obviously still fuming he had to babysit German prisoners and not get any extra hits in. It was more than they deserved even if they did surrender.
You were finishing up some wound care on another soldier when Joe had come in. Even in his intimidating state, you were exhilarated to see him alive. You rush over to him and notice his neck bandages saturated in red. Your joy quickly turned to panic as you went to touch his arm.
He turned around viscously shrugging your hand off him and met your stare with horror after he realized he had almost hurt you. His chest heaving, and eyes wild, it took him a few seconds to regain his bearings.
You were actually frightened at first but didn’t back away too much from him since he still needed medical attention.
“Joe?” you ask cautiously.
He swallowed hard then softened his stance, “I was told to get this fixed up.” He replied as he gestured to his neck.
You nod, “Ok, Lieb, over here.”
You lead him over to a more secluded space in another part of the barn that you used to triage patients. After his little ‘floor show’ you decided he needed a safe space to decompress. He slumped down on the cot in the room with a huff and stared at his boots.
You went to the shelves with the supplies you needed, grabbing clean dressings, gauze, and peroxide. You sat yourself next to Joe and prepared everything to tend to his neck. He winced when you pulled the partially blood encrusted wrapping.
“I’m sorry.” You whispered. He only side eyed you as a response.
You soaked the gauze with the antiseptic, then pressed it to his wound. He hissed from the sting.
“Sorry, Joe. I have to make sure it’s clean.” you explained.
“Mmhm.” He hummed, “Just do it.” he added in a low voice.
You continued working on him quietly. The air was heavy in the room. You hoped he would open up to you. It was clear he had been bottling something up. He won’t even offer a glance to acknowledge you.
You unravel the new dressing placing the padded part to his wound, then lean in closer to loop the ends around his neck like a scarf to secure it in place. As you repeat this action, you were required to keep nearing his face with yours. Still refusing to look at you, he remained looking at his boots and you admired how long his lashes were as he looked down. You finish the wrap tucking the end in, and you couldn’t stop yourself,
“Joe, look at me.” you requested.
He sighs irritably, rolling his eyes and meets your concerned gaze.
You study his face, bringing your hand to his forehead to gently sweep away his hair. He looked you up and down skeptically, unsure what was happening. A new concoction of emotions simmered inside him when he felt your fingers combing his hair back out of his face.
Angst...elation...hunger...want...need...He had no idea what was happening with him. And it seemed to intensify while he was sitting there with you. Even in the midst of combat he doesn’t feel this level of fight or flight response. His breath hastened as his heart rate accelerated. He straightened up and faced you, bringing his hand to yours, softly grabs your wrist pulling it away from his hair not taking his eyes away from your face.
Your breath hitched in your chest as your heart pounded so hard you were sure he could hear it as well. Your eyes widened seeing his eyes dark and blown out from something deep beneath the surface unknown. The small space between you is intense and unnerving.
Joe’s POV
*“Look at her... Even after how I’ve treated her, she’s still being so good to me. I don’t deserve this...I don’t deserve her. Every time she touches me it's like electrical currents shocking my entire body. How does she do it? What I wouldn’t do for her to just grab my face and just lay one on me and never pull away. Jesus Christ get it together, Liebgott, she probably hates you now. But if I leave now, anything could happen and neither of us would know...anything. I won’t leave her until I know.”*
“Joe?” you wave your free hand he wasn’t holding in front of his face. He shook his head snapping out of his thoughts.
“You’re all cleaned up now. You can go back to the guys or take a few minutes and stay to regroup.” you suggest.
You stand to leave but Joe doesn’t release your hand. You furrow your brows confused.
“You need something else?” you ask.
Joe stood gripping your shoulders to face you square with him. His mouth curled into a slight grin. With intent behind his eyes and urgency in his touch, he finally speaks directly to you.
“Just you.” he purrs.
Your jaw slacked from shock. You look up at him through your lashes, your iris's doe-like and glistening. Words as well as breath failed to leave your mouth. You felt dizzy and faint, your entire sternum burning like you had just taken a swig of Vat 69. You feel Joe steady you as you slightly sway backward. He kneaded your arms affectionately making you a melting mess in his strong slender hands.
“-me?” you choked as you placed your hand over where your heart was ready to explode from.
He nodded deliberately and slowly, “-only you.”
Your skin and insides tingled causing you to tremble. You take a deep breath trying to regain your composure.
“Where is this coming from, Joe?” you finally ask.
He shrugged, “It’s always been there. Buried deep down and just grew bigger every day. I just can’t keep it down anymore, you know?” he explained.
You beam at him, partially lost in your own thoughts calculating the situation you found yourself in with him at that moment. You avert your eyes downward releasing a soft chuckle. You shake your head,
“Joe, I-”
“-Don’t tell me you don’t feel the same, Y/N.” he dared.
You meet his eager stare, “Of course I do, Joe,” you respond in a desperate breathy voice, “I have spent this past year worrying myself sick about you, and at first, I couldn’t figure out why! I have been fighting it every single day and I am exhausted from it. I lose sleep when you’re on patrol without me, and the few hours I can get, I have night terrors that you return to me maimed and bloody, scaring me wide awake! I swear I have more gray hair from this.”
You went off on this tangent, pacing back and forth in the small room not realizing how much you just confessed, but Joe once again remained silent just mesmerized by you absorbing every word you say.
“So, you do feel the same.” he confirmed standing taller with a gratifying smirk.
You turn to him, your eyes beginning to gloss over with tears, “Joe, *I have loved you for several hours now, and every second more. I thought an hour ago that I loved you more than any woman has ever loved a man, but a half hour after that I knew that what I felt before was nothing compared to what I felt then. It goes on and on, Joe. There is no room in my body for anything but you. *”
Each of you standing opposite the other, you're practically panting from the overwhelming flow of emotions and lack of breath you forgot to take. You await the next venture to unfold.
Without a word, Joe swiftly closed the gap between you, and before you could even gasp, he pulled you in by the back of your head locking his lips onto yours.

~~~~~~~
As you come up on Carentan, you’re met with heavy fire from German snipers hiding inside some of the buildings. Most of you take cover in the ditches on either side of the road but are just made easy targets for the Germans since everyone was still out in the open.
Winters shouted at the troops to move forward to get cover and started to physically lift each soldier he passed to get them moving.
“Get yourselves out of those trenches!”
After finally making entry into the town, American soldiers scatter to wherever they can to get cover from all of the gunfire coming from every direction.
Tumblr media
You and Doc on separate ends of the streets trying to keep low to tend to the wounded.
“MEDIC!!”
You race to two soldiers landing on your knees next to them, one on the ground with a trail of blood coming from his helmet, the other crouching over him.
“He’s still breathing, help me carry him!” You call out. You each grab an arm of the injured soldier and drag him behind a building.
While you’re working on the nameless soldier’s head wound, a drug store gets blasted by German artillery not far from where you were, the force from the explosion sending you sideways into the brick wall next to you.
Your ears intensely ringing, it’s all you can hear for a moment until you hear Liebgott’s voice.
“TIPPER! TIP! Answer me, Tip!” Joe calls out to his partner, Ed Tipper who sadly had been in the building when the blast occurred.
You shake your head vigorously in an attempt open your ears and regain your composure. When you finally snap out of it, you look up to see Tipper stumbling out of the destroyed storefront of the pharmacy, the left side of his face completely torn up from shrapnel, and his right thigh blown wide open, the artery clearly lacerated and bleeding out.
Liebgott running, stops dead in his tracks when he sees Tipper.
“Joe?? Is that you??” Tipper calls out trembling.
Liebgott stunned by Tipper’s bloody appearance, slowly approached him carefully setting down is rifle.
Tumblr media
“Lookin’ good, Tip.” Joe says reassuringly placing his rifle on the ground, “-lookin’ real good.”
Liebgott gently took Tipper by the arm, leading him out of the building.
“Come here, buddy, you gotta sit down. Come here...Come on...” He slowly helped Tipper to the ground, “Easy, easy...There you go...there you go.”
Liebgott crouched next to Tipper and gently guided his head to rest in the crook of his neck.
Tumblr media
Tipper’s breath became ragged and labored. As he started coughing up blood, Joe surveyed the rest of the damage on him. He discovers the right thigh wound, bleeding out and pulsating where the artery was hit, then the right foot exposed through the boot also drenched in red.
“Ah Jesus...” Liebgott whispered to himself stroking Tipper’s hair. “You hang in there, buddy. Okay, we're gonna get you fixed up. All right...okay. Guys, you wanna give me a hand here? Come on.”
Tumblr media
He started to lift Tipper as you approached. Before the other two soldiers could help Liebgott pick him up, you push through them grabbing Tipper’s right arm to bring it across the back of your shoulders and assist carrying him to safety.
“Over here, Lieb.” You direct.
You both rest Tipper against the wall as you grab a large dressing from your med bag, putting it directly over his thigh to apply pressure. You knew it would be to no avail since the artery needed to be held closed to keep the blood in and he’s lost so much blood already. Without plasma, you couldn’t do much.
“Tip, I’m right here.” You comfort him, putting your face in his line of sight so he can see you.
Liebgott staring stood up slowly, waiting for you to work your healing magic, but you already knew Tipper’s fate was sealed. You look up apologetically at Joe and shake your head.
~~~~~~~
After the dust finally settled, the town was now under American control. The time in Carentan was short lived, as orders came through for Easy to attack East towards the low ground. Easy went from the Western part of Carentan towards the South, near the village of Douville. You all are confronted with a major German resistance upon your arrival. The Germans launched a strong counter- attack with tanks and armored vehicles. Fortunately, Sherman tank reinforcements arrived, breaking the German lines of contact and shortly abandoned the hill.
A few days later, after a failed reconnaissance mission, Easy was removed from the front lines and sent back to Sainte-Mère-du-Monte to recover from the combat you all had endured. To Easy’s misfortune, Lipton announces you all are to return to combat in September. New orders state Easy is to drop into Holland to liberate the people from German tyranny.
But when Easy approaches Eindhoven, the locals commemorate your arrival with celebration in the streets with banners waving and cheers of appreciation. Women of the village kiss each soldier on the cheeks and mouths as they pass, while the men hug or shake their hands showing their gratitude.
It was chaotic. Everywhere you looked, people were dancing and shouting in the streets while music blared from a band off to the side. You were once again separated from Joe.
You hear Lipton yelling, “Keep moving!!” He repeated over and over amongst the crowd as he ushered the guys up the street.
This was an unusual change of pace for Easy Company. Instead of being met with gunshots and explosions, you’re welcomed with warm smiles and affection from the locals. Some of the guys took advantage of the situation getting in some extra kisses from the local women.
You wondered if Liebgott was kissing any of these women. Afterall, they seemed to be wearing some of their best dresses with make-up and here you were, having looked like a hag for nearly four months since you dropped on D-Day. Why wouldn’t he get his kisses in while he had the chance to get one from a lady looking like she had at least been bathing consistently?
This thought discouraged you. You hadn’t done yourself up since Toccoa. You release a sigh of frustration and continue pushing through the crowd.
~~~~~~~
That evening, Easy got together with some of the new Easy replacements in attendance at what seemed to be a barn made into an improvised pub. There was a dartboard on the wall, and multiple tables and chairs set up. A simple radio playing some popular tunes sat on the bar.
“Hey, Lieb, where’s Y/L/N?” Perconte asked.
Liebgott shrugged. “Last I heard she went to one of the local women’s houses to get cleaned up.”
“Betchya we won’t even recognize her.” Guarnere joked.
The guys all laughed collectively. Malarkey pushed through the crowd trying to get everyone’s attention.
“Hey, guys! Get a look at the bird that just came in!” Malarkey pointed towards the entrance with a wide eager smile.
Everyone redirected their attention to the front of the room. Most of the men of Easy caught sight of an almost familiar woman wearing the standard female Army dress uniform complete with skirt, simple heels, and clean white medic brassard displaying the Red Cross around the left bicep. Hair clean and perfumed pulled back into a neat fashionable bun and a face with fresh make-up and painted lips. You almost had the entire room at a complete standstill when you walked in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Liebgott’s jaw dropped, (as did everyone’s).
“Who the hell is that?” Talbert asked.
“Floyd, you’re an idiot.” Guarnere asserted.
“It’s our little lady medic, boys.” Randleman pointed out affectionately.
Excited murmurs and whispers filtered across the room.
You start to make your way to Easy in the back. Of course, you’re approached by several other members from other companies there, but you kindly decline their advances so you can get to your own.
“Hey, fellas.” You greet as you near the group of Easy soldiers.
They all inaudibly respond with their own forms of welcome, then all fall silent leaving a heavy blanket of tension in the air between you and them. You look around suspiciously wondering why none of them were making eye contact with you or speaking. Some looked like they were even holding their breath.
“What’s wrong with you guys? It just Y/L/N! Quit acting like you never seen a woman before.” Nixon said addressing the men.
“Yeah, but that’s just it, sir, it’s Y/L/N...dolled up. She don’t normally look like this.” Guarnere explained.
Nixon laughed. “Then it would be gentlemanly of one of you to offer her a seat while I get her a drink. What will you have Y/L/N?” He called out to you.
“Thank you, sir, any beer will be just fine.” You replied with a relieved smile.
“You clean up nice, L/N!” Malarkey commended as he pulled you in for a one-armed hug.
“Thanks, Don.” You respond as your cheeks heat up.
The rest of the guys agree simultaneously, each voicing over the other how great you looked.
You laugh nervously, “Gee, guys, thanks.” Was all you could say.
You weren’t used to this kind of attention from the boys. As the awkwardness lifted and everyone started to resume socializing, your eyes eventually met Liebgott’s.
Tumblr media
You each smile at eachother.
“Here you go, L/N.” Nixon handed you a bottle with a wink.
“Thanks, sir. Cheers!” You raise your beer clinking it against his highball glass of Vat 69 whiskey on the rocks.
You finally go to stand with Liebgott.
When you reached him, he gently pulled you in by your waist and leaned in to whisper in your ear.
“You’re a knockout, sweetheart.” He professed with that Joe Liebgott smirk.
You felt his warm breath dance along your neck, making your spine shiver and the butterflies rise in your stomach.
Your breath caught in your chest, and you smiled shyly at him.
“Lookin’ dapper yourself, Joe.” You reply as you readjust his tie.
Your little moment was interrupted abruptly by Guarnere.
“Hey Joe, if you ain’t gonna have a dance with her, how ‘bout letting one of us take her once around the room?” He teased.
An upoar of laughter erupted from the group.
Joe looked at you and raised his eyebrows, “How about it, doll?” He asked.
“Oh, I don’t think I can dance in these shoes, Joe. I tripped twice outside on the way over here.” You admitted.
Tumblr media
Joe chuckled then Luz came up to you.
“Hey Y/F/N! Bull here says you got some pipes on ya? Can you sing us a little something?” He bid.
You direct a look of betrayal towards Randleman.
“You said you wouldn’t tell anyone, Bull.” You reminded him sharply.
“It would be a crime and shame to keep that voice a secret, lady.” Randleman declared.
Laughter fills the air.
“So, whaddya say? One song? For us?” Luz begged again.
You look around at all the eager faces of the men in Easy Company, and you smile.
“How about some Ella Fitzgerald?” You suggest.
The men cheered and ushered you over to the upright piano against the wall by the bar.
“Hey, we can’t see her!” One soldier shouted from the back.
“Give her something to stand on!” Another one called out.
Toye placed a chair next to the piano as Liebgott offered his hand to help you up.
When you came into view of the audience, all the men applauded, directing whistles and howls of admiration.
You grimace playfully shaking your head mouthing, “Knock it off!” as you wave them down.
A soldier from the crowd sat at the piano.
“You know, Goodnight, My Love?” You ask him.
The soldier nodded and began playing the selection from memory.
You serenade with all your heart and soul, immediately capturing the room. As you sing, you look from one awestruck face to another, making sure to smile as any good entertainer would do in the movies. You felt like a starlet.
The whole room leaning in listening intensively, some ogling at you from the tables, your eyes connect with Joe’s who’s standing along the front. He grins as he watches you admirably and you can’t help but return a smile.
At that moment on the last line of the song, you lost your balance.
🎶Sleep tight, my love, goodnight, my love
Remember that you’re my sweetheart--🎶
“GASP!”
All the air suddenly left your lungs as you feel your feet leaving the surface of the chair. It all seemed to happen in slow motion as Joe swiftly swooped in catching you bridal style before you can hit the floor. The room in unison choked with concern.
The world went still while Joe was holding you. Your faces so close, your cheeks reddened and once again your breath stuck in your throat somewhere.
 “Nice grab, Liebgott!” You hear Guarnere shout. The room laughed and applauded as Joe turned still carrying you, smiling mischievously from ear to ear.
“What a finale!” Compton called out.
“No more booze for her!” Luz teased. More laughter.
Liebgott set you on your feet.
“You good?” He asked. You nod.
“Thanks to you.” You beamed. You leaned in and kissed his cheek to show your gratitude for the rescue.
You heard some of the guys mockingly whistle at you and Liebgott for this little show of affection.
His astonishment had left his mouth slightly agape and his eyes wide making you giggle. He leered playfully at you.
“You missed, sweetheart.” He eluded as he tapped his lips with his finger winking at you.
You raised an eyebrow at him skeptically. With your fore and middle fingers together, you press them to your red lips, kiss the pads, then place them onto Joe’s waiting lips which he gladly kissed. A devilish grin stretched across his face.
“Maybe next time we can have that dance?” He suggested.
“Sure, Joe. At least I know I can depend on you to catch me if I fall again.” You proclaim with a wink and a coy smile.
“I’ll always be there to save you, sweetheart.”
“Y/L/N!” Winters shout whispers to you, waving you over to come to him.
You had landed in the middle of a field, tall grass quite overgrown, and dark as hell. You gather your chute to keep the wind from pulling you off, then hurry over to him.
“You ok, corporal?” Winters asked.
“Yes, sir.” You respond no louder than anyone but him to hear.
Although you say you’re physically ok, your internal activity is utter chaos. Your eyes were constantly on the move from left to right looking for German threats, your fellow jumpers...but most importantly for Liebgott.
During the flight, you were sitting directly across from him. You secretly wished to be next to him so you could land closer to eachother after the drop. Instead, you jumped right before LT Winters, whereas Liebgott jumped and probably landed long before you had left the plane.
Another soldier about ten feet away hustled over.
“Flash!” Winters called out.
“Shit!” The unknown soldier responded.
“I don't think that's the correct reply, trooper. I say 'flash,’ you say ‘thunder.’” Winters advised him.
“Yessir.” The soldier replied nervously.
The unfamiliar soldier was Private John Hall from Able Company. He was the radio man until he lost his radio in the jump. Nobody landed where they were supposed to, and it was clear that everyone was scattered.
Tumblr media
You remained to the rear of Hall and Winters to secure behind you in case any Germans approached from behind. The three of you make it to a tree line and enter the woods to get some proper concealment.
“We'll locate some landmarks to get our bearings. Keep your eyes peeled for buildings, farmhouses, bridges, roads, trees.” Winter instructed.
You hear a rustle in the thicket across the stream from where you had been walking. Winters motioned for you all to camouflage yourselves against the brush of some bushes. Winters takes his clicker, then signals to who he deduced were American soldiers by clicking twice. Four clicks in response confirmed they were Easy Company members.
“Lieutenant Winters, is that you?” Lipton questioned.
Sergeant Lipton along with two paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne crossed the stream and you all kneeled in a circle to figure out the next course of action.
“Sir, I saw a sign back that aways, said, ‘Sainte-Mère-Église.’” Lipton declared.
Winters pulled out a map, flashlight and small compass, while an 82nd troop threw a raincoat over him for light control so not to give away your position.
Tumblr media
Winters stated it was at least a four hour walk to the assembly point, so you all got walking. You run into Privates Malarkey and Rob “Popeye” Wynn, as well as Corporal Joe Toye.
Easy Company began greeting eachother, relieved to see that some of you made it safe to the ground. Toye gave you a few heavy pats on the back.
“Son of a bitch! You made it, doll!” Toye acknowledged, impressed by your gumption to survive such a vicious drop.
“Good to see you, L/N!” Malarkey was all smiles as he brought you in for a one-armed hug.
When you pulled away, his facial expression turned uneasy.
“Seen Joe?” He asked concerned.
You could only shake your head, too afraid to speak about it outloud so not to make the worst-case scenario a reality.
Malarkey put a hand on your shoulder giving you an encouraging squeeze.
“I’m sure he’s fine.” He whispered to you. You each exchange weak smiles.
You start the convoy following the train tracks to your next destination. As you’re walking you hear another rustle from behind.
“Flash!” Winters called.
“Thunder! LT Winters? Is that you? Malarkey?” A very familiar voice responded.
Fire and bile bubbled in the pit of your stomach...Guarnere. Just what you needed. You yearned for Liebgott to be here with you now that Guarnere had joined up with you guys.
“Hey, fellas!! Good to see ya, Lark! Toye!” Guarnere beamed.
As soon as he saw you, he grimaced, spit at the ground the turned around to face Winters.
“Guarnere, keep moving. You and Hall up front.” Winters directed.
After an unfortunate run in with a group of Germans, you push forward towards Sainte-Mère-Église.
It was the longest night ever but as daylight broke, you come upon what looks to be a small farm with several dead Germans lying under a dead paratrooper hanging by his parachute cords from a tree. The group scrounge any supplies left from the casualties, then continued the trek to the assembly point.
Finally, you see in the short distance where the rallying point is. A small town with bombed out buildings served as an assembly point for the Regiment to regroup. After you pass the cow carcasses made to be a makeshift check point at the entrance of the village, you inadvertently start trailing your team as you desperately scoured the main street for Liebgott.
Your heart began to sink into a whirlpool of despair. Your chest starts to tighten as tears begin to cloud your vision causing the world to close in on you. The voices of the men around you are muffled and distant. You wouldn’t even know or care if any of them were speaking directly to you because it felt like everything was crumbling around you. All because Joe was nowhere to be seen or heard.
Lost in your own underworld, ready to yield to what you thought was the inevitable, you clearly hear a single voice that heaves you from your sorrowful conviction.
“Easy Company!” You hear through the crowd.
Only Joe Liebgott’s voice could revive you from this morbid state.
“That has to be him!” You think to yourself.
Your breath hitched as you frantically searched for him. So many men wearing the same uniform made it almost impossible to tell one from the other. Your ability to speak was muted by distress, you couldn’t even bring yourself to call out to him. You almost thought you imagined hearing him at all, until at last, you look ahead up the road, and off to the side, you see him. A wave of relief rains onto you as you stand there stunned.
He shakes Guarnere’s hand.
“Bill! Good to see ya.” Liebgott gestured with a smile.
His expression shifted to concern when he didn’t see you right away. He started to push through the crowd in hopes of finding you. The guys parted a path for him to see you at the other end of the street, motionless as your eyes finally meet.
Tumblr media
Joe, excitement spreading across his face, hurried to you. Your legs fail you, bringing you to the ground on your hands and knees.
“Y/F/N!” Liebgott wailed as he broke into a full-on sprint towards you.
When he reached you, he threw himself to his knees in front of you scooping you into his arms.
“Y/N?? Look at me! Are you hurt?”
He brought his face level with yours, trying to look at you. When you finally look up, he held your head between his strong hands to keep your face straight towards his. Tear streaks stained your filthy cheeks. Puzzled, he tilted his head studying you. He took the sleeve of his uniform and gently wiped your face and with his other hand cradled your head. You bring your hands up and hold his hand that supported your head, leaning into his touch.
He looks you over, trying to find any signs of injury. He looks upon you fervently, affectionately running his thumb across your cheekbone. He’s waiting for you say something, anything to reassure him that you’re ok.
Your tears continue to flow, but you’re smiling.
Liebgott chuckled from confusion.
“Y/N, why the hell are you crying?” He asked you.
After a long pause, and a much-needed exhale after holding your breath for so long, you say,
“I thought I’d never see you again...”
He was pleasantly shocked by your response, not to mention absolutely elated. His smug grin surfaced as he gently helped you to your feet.
His hands gripped your shoulders keeping you stable while your hands rested on his chest. He tenderly shifted your head side to side by your chin to examine your face for any scratches or abrasions...or he wanted an excuse to look at you which was likely the case.
“Don’t worry, I ain’t goin’ nowhere.” He stated with that unmistakable confidence.
He smiled at you then winked, sending you into a flutter of euphoria.
“So, you missed me, huh?” He added.
You punch him in the shoulder then hug eachother like you’re not right in the middle of a gruesome invasion of Europe.
But you had missed him. You were afraid for him...terrified. Joe had an unshakable presence of rage that drove him straight to the center of danger with no regard for his own well-being. His love language was sarcasm and any form of banter, so if he ever did feel fear, it was never terribly noticeable.
It didn’t matter right now, though. You finally found Joe. Nothing or nobody else was more important.
Winters was told to select some men and lead an assault on a French estate called Brécourt, about 300 yards from where you all were rallied. The Germans have installed four 88mm antitank cannons that were firing directly on Utah Beach and inflicting heavy casualties. Easy Company’s objective was to flank the Germans from behind and demobilize them so American soldiers had safe passage onto the beachhead.
Only having 13 Easy Company members accounted for, this left them having to borrow men from other companies that they picked up on the way to the town after the drop.
Winters addressed the 13 troops that were selected to go on this next mission. This included Liebgott and yourself.
“The 88s we’ve been hearing have been spotted in a field down the road a ways. Major Strayer wants us to take them out.”
He had a sheet of blank paper with a map in the center of the circle of soldiers.
“There are two guns that we know of firing on Utah Beach.” Winters drew x’s on the paper signifying where they were located then continued.
“Plan on a third and fourth here and here.” He drew two more x’s before proceeding.
“The Germans are in the trenches with access to the entire battery. With machine gun covering the rear. We’ll establish a base of fire and move under it hard and fast with two squads of three.”
“How many Krauts they think we’re facing?” Guarnere interrupted.
Winters paused.
“No idea.” He responded.
“No idea?” Guarnere retorted while rolling his eyes.
Winters returned to the brief disregarding Guarnere’s passive attitude.
“We’ll take some TNT along with us. Despite the guns. Lipton, your responsibility.”
“Yes, sir.” Lipton replied.
“Liebgott, you’ll take the first machine gun, with Petty A-gunner.” Winters instructed. Liebgott only nodded.
Tumblr media
“Plesha, Hendrix, you take over the other. Who does that leave?” Winters asked collectively.
You, Malarkey, Toye, Guarnere, and Compton raise your hands.
“Okay. We’ll be making the main assault. Understood?” Winter added.
You collectively replied “Yes, sir.”
“Alright, let’s pack it up.” Winter ordered.
You all gather outside to prepare your gear. Winters approached you as you crouched organizing your med supplies.
“Y/L/N.”
“Sir?” You say standing quickly, facing Winters.
“I’ll need you more towards the rear, so we have the best chance of maintaining our medical assist in case anyone gets hurt.” Winters ordered.
“But, sir-” You began.
“Remain to the rear.” Winters repeated sternly before you could finish.
You look at him wanting to protest his order, but only sigh reluctantly.
“To the rear.” You confirmed.
You return to prepacking your gear begrudgingly. Liebgott watched you and chuckled.
“What?” You ask him.
He looked over to you.
“You’re cute when you're upset.” He admitted.
Unamused, you decide not to dignify with comment and keep packing your stuff.
“MEDIC!!” You hear from a distance after heavy gunfire and explosions unleash relentlessly onto Easy.
You run and duck, racing in the direction of the yelling, weaving and bobbing trying to avoid getting hit by any oncoming enemy fire. You couldn’t hear anything except your own heartbeat as you ran, but managed to find the spot where you were needed.
You jump feet first into the trench, finding Guarnere, Compton, and Lorraine, with ‘Popeye’ Wynn lying on his side crying out in pain.
“I’m sorry, sir!!” Wynn kept yelling.
“Where you hit, Pop?” You shouted.
“Right in the ass!” He yelped.
Compton, Guarnere, and Lorraine laid suppressive fire while you worked on Wynn.
“Lay on your stomach, Pop, I need to see!” You direct him helping turn over onto his front.
You cut through the hole on the seat Wynn’s pants where the bullet made contact, exposing the wound.
“Goddam it, I’m sorry, sir, I didn’t mean to fuck up!” Wynn called out to Compton.
“Pop, just stay still! You’re gonna be fine, buddy.” You tell him as you applied pressure to his wound reaching for your clot powder and bandages.
You project your voice to Wynn, but it’s calm and steady so not to alarm him. The slightest hint of terror in your voice only makes things worse for the wounded was something Doc Roe told you.
“You think you can make it back yourself?” Compton shouted out to you and Wynn.
You both look up at him.
“I think so, sir!” Wynn responded.
“I’m not goin’ anywhere, sir.” You declared.
Corporal Y/L/N, you’re going with Pop to make sure he gets back!” Compton ordered.
“With all due respect, sir, I’m needed here. I’m staying!” You argued as you helped Wynn to his feet to shove him out of the trench.
Compton grunted in frustration.
“He wasn’t asking ya, he was tellin’ ya.” Guarnere snapped at you.
“And I wasn’t talkin’ to you, Guarnere! You just hold the line while I do my job!” You returned with ice in your voice. You carefully crawl out of the trench to go find anyone else that might need your help.
Guarnere scoffed to himself amused by your response.
~~~~~~~
Easy Company along with Spiers’ Dog Company claimed victory at Brécourt, securing the beachhead.
As the two units walked back to the assembly point back at the town, Liebgott caught up with you.
“Hey, Y/N, you alright?” He asked right away. He looked you over and noticed blood stains on your uniform.
You sense his panic, “Don’t worry, it’s not mine. I’m fine, Joe.” You reassure.
He exhaled then gave your shoulder a gentle squeeze, smiling at you when you looked at him.
“Good.” He replied. “I’ll find you later, Gams.” He added with a wink, then rushed off ahead.
You laugh to yourself, a fuzzy feeling rising within you that only Joe could produce after such a horrific situation.
~~~~~~~
That night was spent recovering. The following day orders were given to maneuver to take Carentan where German soldiers were being sheltered. Carentan was the main crossroad between Cotentin and Calvados where the ally force’s tanks needed passage to attack the main objective, Cherbourg.
“Listen up!” LT Welsh shouted. “It'll be dark soon. I want light and noise discipline from here on. No talking, no smoking. And no playing grab-fanny with the man in front of you, Luz. We're taking Carentan. It's the only place where armor from Omaha and Utah Beach can link up and head inland. Until we take Carentan, they're stuck on the sand. General Taylor's sending the whole division.”
Some of the men begin to grumble under their breath. Everyone started to stir to gather their gear to begin the journey to Carentan.
Walking in a file formation on each side of the road to Carentan, Liebgott makes sure to keep you in his peripherals. You’re behind Toye, who’s talking to Guarnere in front of him.
“Heard Y/L/N gave you the business back at Brécourt, Bill.” Toye teased him.
“Ah shit, Toye, why?” You whispered to him, not thrilled about the instigation.
Guarnere was unusually quiet at first. Probably thinking of something snarky to say about you.
“She sure did, Joe.” He finally responded almost warmly.
Guarnere looked back at you giving you a small smirk before he added, “Ya did good out there, kid.” He complimented you.
You were surprised to say the least. You’ve earned Guarnere’s respect because you didn’t allow his indifference towards you to break you during combat. Not only did you not allow him to shake you, but you also dished some attitude in return, reminding him to keep his focus on the battle. Things were going to be different between you and ‘Wild Bill’ Guarnere.   ~~~~~~~
Joe Liebgott series update:
I’ve started my 10th and final chapter of my current Joe Liebgott series. It’s going to be a long one because I’m cramming Why We Fight and Points into this chapter.
Expect conflict, explosive feelings, soft sexual content, forever fluff and of course, (my favorite) angst 😈
Just wanted to give everyone a heads up who’s been waiting to read the next story because it’s been months since I posted for this series, so stay tuned! 🪖♠️🦅❤️
I started to rewatch BoB and discovered that the timelines in my stories are a complete train wreck on here.
I went back into Chapter 1-The Age of Chivalry & Chapter 2-The Talk and made quite a few corrections for the sake of being as accurate as possible to the series.
You’re more than welcome to revisit these stories to experience these updates (or not). I’ve provided them below for easy access.
*These stories may not fall entirely in accordance with the TV series timeline. I do not know the real soldiers the actors portray in this series, so please understand I show no disrespect. Some or most of historical events and character interactions in my fanfics are fabricated purely for the sake of the enjoyment of fiction*
