Jack Fontan (Mar 27, 1927 - Nov 3, 2008) modeled frequently for photographer George Platt Lynes, often nude.
In 1949, Fontan was cast in the chorus of “South Pacific”. The story goes that he was given a pair of denim pants to wear for one scene. Director Joshua Logan thought they were too long so be personally cut them at the knees. Still too long, Logan kept cutting the pants until Jack's legs were bare right up to his crotch (better to display Fontan’s muscular legs).
Fontan generally didn’t wear underwear, so he went on stage just wearing the short-shorts. After a performance two women who had been sitting in the front row complained about the view. For the next performance the stage-manager told Fontan to wear jockeys under his costume.
When Logan heard about it, he vetoed the jockeys and told the box-office: “If they don't want to see his balls, they can have their money returned”.
