Mob Rule: Broodmate Dragon
Tumblr media
My name is Mowu, and I hate rules. As a Gruul, anyone telling me what to do is just trying to distract me from smashing them. I will smash them anyways! However, if there is a rule that lets me ignore the other rules, perhaps I can get behind that.
Welcome to Mob Rule, a blogpost/article series about Rule Zero commanders, a unique(ly bad) deck tech around them, and what legendary creatures to substitute for them if the lawmages get too much on our backs.
But first, what makes a good Rule Zero commander?
Tumblr media
Of course, a Rule Zero commander can be whatever the fire in your heart tells you to follow, but just because we're rioters doesn't mean we're stupid. Since Rule Zero requires everyone else at the table to accept your leader, we ideally don't want to follow someone too scary, as much fun as blinking Magister Sphinx a few times may be. We also want someone of actual interest to build around, and one that isn't too easily replicated by an 'official' commander.
For the preliminary search, I looked at either legends that can turn into creatures (like Vehicles or Genju), three-color creatures, or legendary acorn creatures, and pulled out a dozen or so that I could work on. Of them, though, only one really sparked my color-bending frenzy, which is the one I'll be talking about today.
A Province Burns
Tumblr media
A Dragon with a juicy ETB? Now that's something! As my later Scryfall searches proved, the Dragon tribe certainly isn't sleeping on ETB effects, ranging from 'good value engine' to 'downright game-winning', as Dragons tend to do. However, there's only a half-dozen or so Dragons like this, and six cards does not a deck make. We could go full-sale into the Dragon tribe and end up with a fairly standard Jund deck, or... we could get weird with it.
The Big Bad Beast is Back Again...
Tumblr media
Black affords us some flicker-esque options, namely 'sacrificing a creature to return another one'--or in Blood for Bone's case, return the same creature to the field. Now Broodmate Dragon can get herself a whole polycule! And, y'know, make a fairly good wage in Treasure with Ganax or Rapacious Dragon, or dive waist-deep in dungeons with Stirring Bard, what have you. The death triggers won't matter so much in this build, but they'll occasionally get an extra ETB with Boneyard Scourge and Bladewing's Thrall.
There are a few solid options for colorless flicker-for-real as well, namely in Voyager Staff, Conjurer's Closet, Golden Argussy Argosy, and Sword of Hearth and Home.
...And She Won't Be Denied
Tumblr media
Generic ETB support comes to Jund in spades, even when excluding most of the 'deal 1 damage' options. We'll get a good chunk of cards out of Elemental Bond and Garruk's Uprising, some extra mana from Gyre Sage and Mana Echoes, and keep the board tidy with Frontier Sage.
We'll be packing our fair share of removal spells, ramp, generic Dragon support, et cetera, but nothing much is notable there beyond a focus on creatures when possible to pump that ETB number up.
On Wings of Tyranny
Tumblr media
We all know that a dragon cannot be ruled, but if we had to choose one, there's a good handful of Jund Dragon commanders. Darigaaz II may never leave the field for good, and Prossh may bring his own bevy of extra creatures, but I ultimately decided on Karrthus to be second-in-command. Part of it is certainly my hipster blood, but granting all our Dragons haste is very handy when they're summoning sick from those flickers, and the pseudovigilance isn't bad either.
The full decklist can be found at https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/mob-rule-broodmate-dragon/ . Until next time, stay untamed!

The mtg market is wild. You can pay $40 for a Karrthus foil OR pay $4 for that same foil but with a little planeswalker stamp in the bottom left corner.

I've been trying to get back into playing magic the gathering since I have a fuckton of cards and I'm trying to expand my hobbies to something not entirely computer-based, plus maybe give me a chance to reconnect with people/a way to connect with new people.
So far I've updated 3 decks, started making a new one, and gathering cards to update a 4th deck. My friend group almost only plays Commander decks, so all my decks are in that style. The decks I've worked on are as follows:
Karrthus Tyrant of Jund (the dragon deck) - first actually synergistic deck I've ever made and remains THE BEST deck I've ever made. Also is very scary and an utter delight to play. It's meant to cheat out enough dragons for me to win, because I was tired of losing every single time I played with my friends. The update to this included adding a few new dragons and another, faster way to cheat out dragons.
Monoblack Sacrifice deck (Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire) - the deck I've been wanting to rework for over 2 years and finally did it. This deck has gone through 3 different commanders and I think the current one works the best. I think it's actually synergistic now, but idk how well it performs yet cuz the only other deck I have to play it against is the dragons and uh... the sac deck barely has fliers so it doesn't go well.
Ghired (pre-made) deck - currently updating this one. I do not play token decks or R/W/G decks, but I think it's better now. I'm gonna play it against the sac deck to compare. Also doesn't have fliers, so I'm not even gonna try with the dragons.
White Enchantment deck - I wanted to make an enchantment deck. I do not have a wide selection of white cards because I do not ever play it, unless it's a pre-release because that keeps happening. I have like 150 cards set aside with no idea what my commander is. This is more a challenge for myself than an actual deck i think will work.
It's been pretty fun going through my cards and seeing what I can do. It also helps like, work my brain cuz it takes a lot of effort to put together something that works and works well, but I like these kinds of challenges. I want to also try another deck building challenge where I make a commander deck with absolutely no rares or mythic rares!

Why the risen is not the best bladewing deck...
, I love “Bladewing The Risen”:
Tumblr media
From his original art that kicks some serious butts, to the classic feel he conveys. Pretty much like the first reanimator decks out there, no blue, just pure black and red goodness reanimating big creatures to aggro the opponent before he finds an answer to your big fatty.
Thing is, I’ve been trying for a while to make a good bladewing edh deck, but somethings aren’t just there. If you overload and put too many dragons, you end up being too clunky. Black and red often translates into a struggle between what do I want now? Control the board? Get ahead on card advantage and find my pieces? Just aggro you with flying lizards? And often you just get one, and even more often, the wrong end of it.
Of course you can fill in with tutors, and be somewhat close to tier 2 or even 1.5, but those shells, would be better served with other rakdos commanders if that’s your thing.
The challenge here is how to consistently make the 7 mana 4/4 the thing that wins you the game. And liking dragons, you miss so many of the greats withou bant colors. Keiga, the Tide Star, Yosei, the Morning Star, Silumgars, Broodmate Dragon, Niv-Mizzets, Crosis, Bolas, Atarka, Karrthus to name just a few. And the Ur Dragon and his Scion.
So here’s the deal, Scion is the latest, craziest fun idea I’ve came to design in a while.
Scion decks suffer often from the same thing, people try to put too much drag stuff, but rarelly end up using it, appart from the Ur Daddy himself, which pushes the opposite, Scion wants you to combine killer morphs, like a Swiss-knife of sorts, like birthing pod, with dragons...
Enter the best green spell ever printed:

It is so cool that you opened some solid Conspiracy 2 mythic legends! I was lucky and opened a couple of foil Karrthus in my box! I wish I had more variety though because with 121 potential cards per slot in the booster, I had many more duplicates than I would have imagined possible. Overall very happy with how they did this set! If you get the chance to draft it, probably not cause Pandemic is the game of the season, it is a real blast! Some things people pass is hard to understand.
i did get some duplicates but tbh the ones i did get my partner was also able to use so we were VERY happy with the box, i think we got around double what we paid in card value and we put almost every single rare to use. i think I'd be too afraid to draft this set, I'd pull only straight value and build a shitty deck 😅

So I really like my Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund Commander deck that I just finished. I think it would fall nto some kinda Heavy ramp control good stuff catagory.
There is still tweaking to do, I do think the Decent of Dragons combo with Karrthus is too cute and note realistic buuuuut we gonna try it for now

Three things on dragons. Modern has skred red which uses stormright dragon (the one with monstrous) as a maindeck wincon. Karthus is good based on meta since ur dragon is so popular. (Also descent of dragons + karthus is a hilarious wincon) Sarkhan the mad is a surprising good wincon in edh.
1) Stormbreath Dragon, and indeed Skred Red, are very rare. Though not entirely unheard of, Stormbreath is a very fringe card.
2) Okay, I’ll grant that Karrthus can be hilarious against enemy dragon decks, but commanders that hose specific other commander strategies don’t tend to be very good in a healthy meta.
3) Sarkhan the Mad IS great, and he’s another reason why Black/Red is a great combination for dragons. On a side note, there’s no Red/White Dragon, which is kind of weird to me. There’s Red/Blue, Red/Green, and plenty of Red/Black.

Have you heard of the world of Jund? Apparently, it’s so dangerous that goblins spend their life looking for the most magnificent beast to eat them. Especially dragons.
Poor dragons, they should complain with Karrthus about the abysmal quality on their food.

I picked up the dragon commander deck yesterday, and after contemplating the best way to merge it with my Karrthus deck, I ended up creating this deck.
I was torn between keeping the deck Jund and using Wasitora as my commander, or going full on 5 color Ur-Dragon. I was hesitant to leave Jund behind, in part because it is my single best mana base, and also because I already have a 5 color Tazri Allies deck. However, The Ur-Dragon proved too good to turn down. I did keep the deck primarily Jund, though, with only a few splashes into blue and white for good dragon tribal.

As an avid Rhada fan, I’m excited she’s got a new form. What returning commanders are you excited for!
So we get five characters who previously had cards getting new cards: Squee, Multani, Radha, Jhoira, and Darigaaz. I think Jhoira is the most exciting for Commander, but Darigaaz is the one that I’m for sure adding to a deck (Karrthus).

Alara Legends
The radio program Hearts of Space is a personal favorite. Their slogan is slow music for fast times, and that’s something I want out of this commentary. Lets slow down and take a look at some cool commanders for a little while.
Tumblr media
Kresh the Bloodbraided. Oh my god is that card cool. Amazing synergy with Ooze Flux (watch out, Retribution of the Ancients is a nonbo). Plague Wind and go to town on someone. Ion Storm is also sweet lifting counters for damage. There’s also some great Mazirek vibes here. The tech this interacts with is Devour, giving you value off your devour targets. If I remember right, Fleshbag Marauder is from this block fitting in nicely with Jund and Grixis. A devour powerhouse would be so interesting to make for Kresh. Thromok the Insatiable would be so many gosh darned counters.
Tumblr media
THE BIG DRAGON. I love him. Long ago I found a article about Jund Dragon devour focusing on goblin targets and there’s wonderful flavor here. Karrthus is the dominant dragon here and you’d be surprised how many cards hand out dragons. Death by Dragons curves nicely into Karrthus and Descent of Dragons can be an elaborate but effective boardwipe. If you run Savage Summoning you can flash Karrthus out for maximum overkill. The haste tag really makes Karrthus flexible as a first dragon or a last dragon with his ETB. Jund dragon tribal is stacked with Atarka, its worth a shot.
Tumblr media
We’re gonna get this one out of the way first. You just get spark elementals. We have Risen Reef so that’s something but unless you can Devour those for value or trigger ETB’s. Your elementals don’t exile or sac at end of turn, so untapping with Seedborn Muse seems ok. Still, its just a 3/1 haste.
That’s all for today. Jund can be pretty terrifying. Feel free to drop a comment or inbox me about any of these or the color Jund itself, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I was able to play in EDH Night tonight for the first time in a long while :,)
We were able to squeeze in 4 Games in 3 1/2 hours, and I was able to come out on top in two of them. They were all quite fun.
Game one I played my brand new Zacama Eldrazi deck. After a few turns of ramping, I had a Zacama+Ulamog+Kozilek+Traverse the Outlands turn, which put me ahead the rest of the game. Zacama having double strike to Duelist’s Heratige and Annihilator on my Eldrazi friend’s finished everyone off after I pulled so far ahead.
Game two consisted of 3 dragon decks (2 Ur-Dragons, and my Kynaios and Tiro build) I wasn’t really able to do a whole lot, and one of the Ur-Dragon decks pulled ahead, slammed a Karrthus, and shut the door on everyone.
Game three I played my Yeva Goodstuff deck, and while I didn’t stumble on mana, I wasn’t able to ramp hard enough to put up against the other Ur-Dragin deck who decided to stay in, who went off with Savage Ventmaw and Scion, copying Hellkite Charger. Unless I could find a way to stop the dragonhoarde, I was pretty dead then or later regardless.
Game four I decided that after losing twice I should play one of my babies, Inalla. I’ve tuned Inalla quite a bit over time, so it is this strange amalgam of Tribal Combo Control. Some days you draw wizards and out value your opponents. Other days you hard control the game into oblivion. Sometimes you draw Azami and Paradox Engine and go off. It’s all dependent on how the deck is feeling that day, and somehow it works.
I won tonight by being able to get four separate triggers on Dire Fleet Ravager, split between two separate instances, cutting eveyone’s life total from the forties to close to 5 after the dust settled. After some hard control, I was able to off one player. The next one scooped to the Zedruu player who had Form of the Dragon. I was able to bounce FotD with Silumgars Command (also targeting my own Rakdos Charm that I decided to counter in order to make this work), cast Viscera Seer, make a copy, and swing with Dire Fleet and the token to win for exactly 5 damage.
I really enjoyed being able to sit down and play out actual games tonight, it’s been a while since we’ve had a good group of good players together who can give each other a run for their money, and it was super enjoyable. Hopefully I’ll be able to do it again soon ☺️
