Angel Bat Dawid picks up the conversation from Edward O. Bland’s seminal 1959 documentary The Cry of Jazz, the Ina GRM director Kassel Jaeger returns to the Shelter Press with a seamless blend of micro-editing and asynchronous looping, summoning solar vessels through the limpid tremors of the Cristal Baschet, and on ‘To Remain/To Return’ the trio of Arooj Aftab, Vijay Iyer, and Shahzad Ismaily unfold a separation anxiety-induced fury, with the jazz innovator Iyer adding ‘I hear Shahzad and myself establishing these haunted cycles, then slowly transforming them, as Arooj glides across like a dark moon’. Plus tracks by Gerald Cleaver, CM von Hausswolff & Chandra Shukla, Dastardly Kids, Jon Iverson, and Me:You.

Nyokabi Kariuki offers a paean to healing, Molly Joyce links hands with the Open Arms Dance Project in Boise, and Christine Correa takes up the clarion calls and defiant tones of Abbey Lincoln, Max Roach, and Oscar Brown Jr. who at the turn of the sixties bore civil rights into the heart of the avant-garde. Plus Kassel Jaeger, James Bangura, Fatboi Sharif & Roper Williams, Sightless Pit, Crosslegged, Richard Dawson, and Cécile McLorin Salvant.
