Barbaro Cavernario declared he would beat Caristico for his NWA World Historic Middleweight title on 1/20/2020. The Dinamitas get a win in their series, as preview to the National Trios title match that same day.

On the heels of the death of La Parka yesterday (the second one in AAA, not the one from WCW, who’s now LA Park), it’s been reported that Kazuo Sakurada has passed away at age 71, following complications from a pacemaker malfunction.

Beginning his career as a middling sumo wrestler (where he met Genichiro Tenryu), Sakurada began his pro wrestling career in 1971, in the dying days of the Japan Pro Wrestling Alliance. There, he infamously would shoot on rookie Tsutomo Oshio on 3/8/1973, as Oshio was rumored to be joining New Japan along with Seiji Sakaguchi & Kengo Kimura. Once the JWA finally died, he joined All Japan Pro Wrestling, and from there would go on to make tours in North America, particularly in Continental, and Stampede, where he was cited as one of Bret Hart’s most significant trainers.

It was during his time at Continental that he would adopt the Kendo Nagasaki persona, but taking a different tack than Peter Thornley, the British wrestler who first had this gimmick. Here, he would often be teamed with Black Ninja, who was of course Keiji Muto prior to becoming The Great Muta. During his time in Continental, he even once beat Jerry Lawler for a title.

Despite shooting on a poor rookie for going to NJPW, he himself would end up in NJPW off and on between 1985-1989, but never really doing anything of note. His final NJPW match was a victory at Wrestling World in Tokyo Dome 1997, the 1/4/1997 Tokyo Dome show, beating Tatsutoshi Goto.

In addition to working in WAR, FMW, IWA Japan and WING in the early 1990s, Sakurada would also be a co-founder, along with Great Kojika, of Big Japan Pro Wrestling, working there between 1995-1999. However, he was near the end by then, and his final match would be on 7/20/2000, on the losing end of an 8-man No Rope Barbed Wire Street Fight Deathmatch in Onita Pro. His formal retirement came in 2001.

JJ Dillon and Kendo Nagasaki [1982]

Wrestling fans worldwide recall JJ Dillon as the manager of The Four Horsemen, but he was known to have managed several wrestlers. Among them, in the early 1980s, was Kendo Nagasaki. One of eight men to portray the gimmick, Kazuo Sakurada was the man under the mask and facepaint, and wrestled against the likes of Chavo Guerrero, Barry Windham, Brian Blair, Butch Reed, and Dusty Rhodes in a Texas Death Match. This version of Kendo Nagasaki wrestled in CWF, the AWA, WWC in Puero Rico, and CWF before wrestling in WCW where he was known as The Dragonmaster.

Another popular version of Kendo Nagasaki was portrayed by Peter Thornley in England's World Of Sport, which lasted from 1971 until 1977 (pictured below).

A Collaboration Between Studio IMA and Anniversary Unites Distant Design Languages

This past February, Studio IMA and Anniversary teamed up during Mexico City’s Art Week for a showcase that reframes contrasting design disciplines in an inviting apartment setting. On view until Fall 2020, the exhibition is a clever take on the power of aesthetics and instinctive perception, putting the distinct Mexican and Japanese cultures in dialogue.

In organizing the show, Bettina Kiehnle of Studio IMA collaborated with Alex Lesage and Emanuelle Roque of Anniversary to dress the gallery’s rooms in a unique manner, displaying the chosen alongside existing pieces from various local and international artists, to create a somewhat mystifying atmosphere that blurs origins and reveals an intriguing homogenous entity.

The newly reimagined space discerningly shapes an encounter between the two rich cultures, juxtaposing their unique traits and highlighting their common threads. With thoughtful and contemplative installations in each room, the intuitive selection of works presents a refined expose of both design aesthetics that aims to enlighten and pique curiosities and perhaps present a new narrative in and of itself. 

Studio IMA sits inside a modernist apartment building in the Roma Norte neighbourhood of Mexico City. The renowned interior design studio, design gallery and boutique was a natural setting for a showcase that juxtaposes Mexican and Japanese art and design works; IMA, an acronym that stands for ‘in my apartment’, is also a Japanese word meaning ‘the present’. Founded and curated by Bettina Kiehnle, IMA is both home and studio, offering discerning art & design lovers an exciting contemporary pivot on the classic gallery.

There is a sense of voyeurism for visitors as they idly stroll between the rooms that make up the apartment. Its pared-down aesthetic, infused with stillness and subtle inconsistencies, delicately combines Bettina’s love for Mexican earth tones, Nordic sensibilities and Japanese plays on light and shadow.

Peppered with whimsical fragments from nature and interwoven with existing gallery works, the deft varied palette of works on display, celebrates the intercultural connections originating from parallel traditions all while embracing sharp differences and overlapping variations. Characteristic elements of Japanese artistic technique based on the appreciation of transient beauty, imperfection and sometimes decay smoothly blend with a Mexican aesthetic that celebrates impermanence, the rustic and the natural world. In the altered rooms, the salient differences quiet down, leading to a delightful mixup as to the origin of the works on display.

As well, the show with its diverse mix of contemporary works, design pieces and found objects, covers the divide between works considered design pieces and those that identify as visual art. The compelling mise-en-scène softens the time and again argued division between the artistic forms rendering their differences vague and in turn accentuates their common philosophies and traits.

Ultimately, building a bridge between Mexico and Japan in an intimate setting serves to highlight cultural sensibilities, celebrate cross-overs and various forms of artistic expression, and embrace new thinking.

Kazuo: Okaaay… whew! Okay, I think I got it now. I should be okay for the exam now with all this in mind. Kazuo: Hey, thanks again for helping me with this history review session, Riddle! Kazuo: I know I’m not in your dorm, but I doubt Leona would have wanted to help me with this. It really means a lot that you could do this for me.

Riddle: Of course. You’re a fast learner, Kazuo, and it pleases me to see my fellow classmates doing what they can to naturally excel in their academics. Riddle: It matters little to me which dorm you originated from. I understand that some dorms struggle with their leadership, so I’m glad that you reached out to me.

Kazuo: Well I’m glad you made the time for me! Memorization is something I struggle with sometimes, so having quick review before our history exams is exactly what I needed. Kazuo: Especially with the Queen of Hearts stuff… sometimes the history around her time is so murky and abstract, it’s hard to really internalize what happened as “real”, if that makes sense.

Riddle: Really? That’s the first time I’ve ever heard someone describe her history as such. Honestly, I find it quite simple, I fail to see it as “abstract” in any way. Riddle: That reminds me… have you ever attended one of our Unbirthday Parties, Kazuo?

Kazuo: Unbirthday Parties? Heheh, can’t say I have, but I’ve heard of them though! Through, uh, my friends and stuff, ya know?

Riddle: To be expected that someone like yourself was well connected, you’re quite personable and well spoken. Riddle: Well, if you’re interested in learning more of the history of the Queen of Hearts, there would be no better opportunity to learn than to attend one and experience her history firsthand. Riddle: We’ll be hosting one this coming Friday at 4:00 sharp. If you’d like to come, we’d be happy to have you.

Kazuo: Oh, really? I’d love to be there! It’ll be okay for me to be there even if I’m not part of your dorm though, right?

Riddle: Certainly. There’s no issues with outside guests attending an Unbirthday Party, so long as they mind their manners and follow all the rules of attendance. Riddle: You need not worry, I’ll be sure to teach you strict and proper Unbirthday etiquette. All you must do is follow my leadership, and you’ll be alright.

Kazuo: Awesome~ I’ll totally be there, then! I’ll make a note of it so I won’t forget.

Riddle: Splendid. I’ll be sure to reserve you a seat. I look forward to seeing you then, Kazuo. Riddle: Ah-! Speaking of being late, look at the time. Since we’re finished, please excuse me. I must return to Heartslabyul immediately so I won’t be late for afternoon tea. Riddle: Remember, this coming Friday at 4:00 sharp. Do not be late under any circumstances, or it will be your head to pay.

(Riddle quickly departs from the hallway)

Kazuo: Take care, Riddle! Kazuo: Man this is gonna be awesome~ I’ve always wondered what it would be like to attend an Unbirthday Party in person! Kazuo: I should bring a thank you gift for attending! It’s what my mom would want me to do, I’m sure. Wonder if maybe the Mystery Shop has something appropriate for me to bring…

(Kaz walks away down the hall, departing from the College and walking toward Mr. S’s Mystery Shop)

(NRC: Outside of Mr. S’s Mystery Shop)

Kazuo: What does someone bring to an Unbirthday Party I wonder… Kazuo: Some roses, maybe? Maybe a weird teacup or silverware? Would they even need something like that? Kazuo: Wait, should I bring a hat? Would it be normal to wear a hat to one of these? Gah, there’s so many options-!

(Bump!)

Kalim: WAAH-!?

(The sound of items hitting the floor)

Kazuo: Oh-! Crap, sorry Kalim! I didn’t see you there!

Kalim: Ahh~ I couldn’t see either ‘cuz of how many bags I was carrying…! My bad, my bad! Kalim: Ack, I hope the banana chips didn’t get crushed when I dropped them!

Kazuo: Geez, you really had a lot on your hands. Here, lemmie help you carry some of those.

Kalim: Much appreciated! I’m just heading back to Scarabia if you wanna follow me there.

Kazuo: Sure! That’s no biggie at all. Kazuo: What are you carrying all these big bags for, anyway? This looks like a lotta foodstuffs to be needing all at once.

Kalim: Oh! We’re gonna have a big party in Scarabia this Friday, so Jamil sent me to pick up some things we’ll need in preparation! Kalim: Some of it’s for decorations and some of it is herbs, spices, and ingredients for the actual banquet. Every last thing in there’s important! It’s all what’ll make this party a real blast! Kalim: There’s gonna be music, dancing, and a big feast with lots of foods from the Scaling Sands! I’m excited already just thinking about it!

Kazuo: Oh, really? That sounds awesome! Kazuo: I’ve never been to a Scarabia party before, or had food from Scalding Sands that is. It sounds like it’d be something fun to experience!

Kalim: What, really?! That’s so sad! We have so many good things to eat back in Scalding Sands! Not to mention the music, and the performances…! Kalim: Ohh… I’m sad just thinking of all the things you’ve been missing out on. Alright, it’s settled then! Kaz, I want you to come to our party this Friday!

Kazuo: Huh?! Are you sure it’d be okay? I mean, you already bought all this food and everything, I don’t wanna impose and make you buy more.

Kalim: It’ll be alright! Jamil will know what to do to make everything work out alright, he always does, ah~haha! Kalim: Besides, if it’s something you wanna experience, I’d like to provide you with the best introduction you can get!

Kazuo: Well… alright! When’s the party going to be?

Kalim: 4:00 on Friday!

Kazuo: Sick! I don’t think I’ve got anything going on then, so I’ll be there!

Kalim: Great! I can’t wait to show you a good time Scarabia-style! Kalim: I’ll make sure Jamil helps make as many foods as possible, so you can really have the full experience! Just make sure to bring a big appetite, haha!

Kazuo: I’ve got enough of one already with all the athletics I have to do, so that won’t be a problem at all!

(More time passes…)

(NRC: Main Street)

Kazuo: Phew! That was a pretty long walk with all those bags! Kazuo: Now, back to what I was doing… um… Kazuo: Wait, what was I doing? I went to the Mystery Shop for a reason, but now I can’t remember what I was going there for…

(Footsteps approach from the distance)

Matt: I thought I heard his voice o’er here. Hey, Kaz!

Kazuo: Eh-? Oh, hey Matt! Hey Marcus! What’s up, guys?

Marcus: Don’t you remember? The signups for the Ignihyde LAN tournament end today. Marcus: I couldn’t find you earlier, so I went and just put both of our names on the signup sheet for us.

Matt: I won’t be there though, cuz Heartslabyul has a thing goin’ on that day.

Kazuo: Oh yeah! I totally forgot we were doing that today, my bad! Kazuo: I feel like there’s been so many things happening today, I’ve completely lost track of time~

Marcus: Oh yeah? What’ve you been up to?

Kazuo: Well earlier I was hanging out with Riddle, and he invited me to the Unbirthday Party that’s gonna be on Friday! I’m stoked to be there and experience one in person~ Kazuo: Then I- oh, I remember now, I was going to the Mystery Shop to see if I could find something to bring as a thank you present, but then I bumped into Kalim while I was there. Kazuo: He had a lot of food that he was carrying back to his dorm, so I thought I’d lend him a hand since he had so much with him. He said they’re gonna be having a party at Scarabia, and invited me to come too!

Marcus: Oh, really? That’s cool. When’d he say it was gonna be?

Kazuo: Oh, he said it was on uh... Wait. Kazuo: Ah, crap! I told both of them I was gonna be there, and both of their parties are this Friday…! At the same time, too!

Marcus: Wait, are you serious? They’re both on Friday?

Kazuo: Yes! God, I can’t believe I forgot… Kalim got me so distracted I completely forgot that the Unbirthday Party was also at the same time…!

Marcus: Uh, Kaz? I have even worse news for you.

Kazuo: What is it…?

Marcus: The LAN party is on Friday too.

Kazuo: What!? You can’t be serious, how did I forget that too?!

Marcus: Bro… you didn’t just double book yourself, you triple booked yourself to three different events. You really didn’t think this through, did you?

Kazuo: Uuugghhh, nooooo…. What am I gonna do, I can’t be in three places at once…! Kazuo: Riddle will be so mad if I don’t come, and Kalim will be so sad…! And the Ignihydes-! Well, they probably won’t care, but I wanna go to that too so badly! Kazuo: What am I gonna do, what am I gonna do…?

Marcus: Haahh… Kaz, just talk to them, alright? Nobody’s going to be mad at you as long as you just communicate, okay?

Kazuo: You think so…?

Matt: Think of it like this- the Unbirthday Parties are once a month, every month. Kalim throws parties every other weekend at minimum ‘cuz that’s jus’ how he is. Matt: We never really know when the LAN parties are ‘cuz Ignihyde jus’ plans ‘em whenever they feel like havin’ one.

Kazuo: I mean that’s true, but… you’re gonna be at the Unbirthday Party, right? It’d be fun to go with somebody I know.

Matt: I’m only goin’ cuz Riddle gave me shit about it when I was ditchin’ last year. ‘s not like it’s high on my agenda.

Kazuo: Yeah, but still…

Marcus: Ugh… Look, I won’t tell you what do to, but consider this: if you cancel with Riddle, then I can also go next month with the both of you.

Kazuo: Really?! You mean it?!

Marcus: E-Eh… I-I mean sure, yeah, I guess. Marcus: I don’t really like parties all that much, but if there’s free food and drink, then I guess I can come.

Kazuo: That would be awesome! Alright, I’ll just tell Riddle I’ll come next time! I’m sure he’ll understand~ Kazuo: Then that just leaves Kalim… I don’t really wanna break his heart, but knowing him he might just plan another party just for me if I tell him why I can’t come.

Marcus: There you go, you got this. Marcus: Either way, Friday is two days away, so you have all day tomorrow to talk to everyone and get things sorted out.

Kazuo: Y-Yeah…! I just gotta talk to everyone tomorrow about it, it won’t be that hard!

Marcus: And next time, Kaz… maybe you should start writing things down on a planner or something so you won’t forget the plans you make with others. Marcus: If it’ll help you remember, then maybe it’s worth investing in.

Kazuo: Why would I do that when I’ve got friends like you two to remember things for me?

Marcus: Wha-! I’m not your personal calendar…!

Kazuo: Kidding! I’m just kidding~ Hehehe~

How do they see the prefect? Before or after the overblots of their dorms

Just for being so darn sweet to me you can have a bit of both, bestie 😘

How Do They See The Prefect?

(WARNING! The following post features spoilers for the endings of all seven major storyline chapters of TWST. Read on at your own risk!)

Matt is vaguely interested in the prefect, due to them being from another world and all, but he won't go out of his way to really interact with them of his own accord. If they come to him first he'll be friendly enough, but he doesn't care about them enough to seek them out otherwise. He thinks getting close to the prefect is a waste of time since in the end they'll likely never see each other again.

He respects their ability to survive the onslaught that was Riddle's overblot in Chapter 1, especially considering how powerful of a mage he is even by NRC standards. As he's usually hanging around by Marcus's side, you'll see the two of them in pairs more often than not. If Marcus chooses to gravitate towards you, Matt will follow shortly after.

Kaz thinks the prefect is interesting! To him, part of his time spent at Night Raven College is about making memories that he wouldn't get the chance to make anyways. Meet people he otherwise would never meet, try things he'd never get to try, and learn things he'd never get to learn. With the prefect however he sees things differently. He wonders if they will find a chance to leave, or if they'll stay in Twisted Wonderland forever, and what will happen to their relationship when the end finally comes.

He does worry a bit for their safety, especially after the events of Leona's overblot in Chapter 2. He starts to feel a bigger drive to look after them especially after these events, much like Marcus does. He hopes one day the two of them can see each other part ways amicably, but they'll have to live that long first before they do!

Marcus feels a fierce obligation to protect the prefect, purely because they're from another world. He would feel miserable if they would end up dying before getting the opportunity to return back to where they came, so he's very much interested in helping them find out how they got to Twisted Wonderland and how to make it back home. If they ever need a helping hand, he'll be glad to be that for them. Being the de-facto leader of his friend group, that also means they get the assistance of Matt and Kazuo as well.

His desire to protect the prefect and align with them only becomes stronger with each overblot. He's impressed by their ability to escape potential death and overcome the deadly challenges frequently being presented to them, but he knows that being magicless in a world full of magical assholes hellbent on destruction is a dangerous existence to live.

Nyx doesn't particularly care about the prefect in the slightest. He has more pressing things to be concerned about, like his schoolwork and his personal relationships. He's interested in the fact that they came from another world, but doesn't care enough to investigate it with them. In fact, he'd rather not get involved with them at all. He's usually too reserved to go out of his way to hold a proper conversation with them, and would rather just be left alone to his own friends and devices.

During the overblot of Chapter 4, he was the only person in his dorm that was able to escape Jamil's wrath by leaving NRC before he began to exact his plan. He heard about what happened in his dorm only after he got back, and was rather surprised to hear about them being able to stand up to Jamil despite everything. He seems more weary around them after this, and has made a mental note of their capabilities, especially with regards to plans he's making of his own before VDC is able to come into full swing across the school...

Stahli's rather neutral on his opinion of the prefect, but he's friendly to everybody so he's going to be friendly to them too! Rest assured, if they're ever in Pomefiore this skunkboy will be glad to see them. He will probably try and enlist them as a taste tester for whatever obscure recipe he's making this week, so hopefully they like the free food even if there's a 50/50 chance of it being something weird.

Chapter 5's overblot was something that took everyone by surprise, but significantly less so for Stahli. Perhaps it's his interest in fortune telling spoiling the future for him, but he seemed to know some kind of doom lingered in the future. Rather than fussing about it or being panicked, however, he would occasionally nudge the prefect in warning during the lead up to VDC to help guide them toward a path of greater safety.

Phobos doesn't give a shit about the prefect at all, but to be fair he doesn't give a shit about most people around him. He's not really interested in becoming closer to them, but he's not going to push them away if they stay low on his annoyance meter. He only offers to help them with anything if they pay him up front. He doesn't do any work for free unless he really likes you.

Phobos's interest in getting involved with S.T.Y.X. during the events of Chapter 6 are very minimal, but he can have a big role depending on how the prefect interacts with him. He can easily track down Idia's location even without Rook's help, and he's very much interested in learning more about the Isle of Woe as a whole. He doesn't actually care about helping bring anybody back from S.T.Y.X. though. You'd have to make it worth his while to keep helping you delve into the depths of Tartarus and fight against the freshly overblotted Idia and Ortho.

Vantablack is very interested in the prefect and wants to know everything about them. Who are they, exactly? Where did they come from? How did they get to Twisted Wonderland? Does the crushing fear of possibly losing everything connected to their old life haunt them? What was their homeworld like? Vantablack is going to bother them frequently, and as part of the first year squad they want it to be known that the prefect can rely on them for anything and everything. Whether or not you can actually trust them, however, is to your discretion.

Despite everything, if there's one thing you can always count on: it's that Vantablack HATES Malleus and would love nothing more than the chance to knock him down a couple pegs. They hate the fact that he's worshiped and revered so highly when they aren't, and wants desperately to beat him and become the next dorm head of Diasomnia. Needless to say, the prefect has their full support in helping stop Malleus's overblot during the events of Chapter 7.

Phobos: Finally… Thought today would never end. (Yawn…)

Jack: You hardly did anything and you’re yawning.

Phobos: I did enough. I don’t need to be running around for a whole hour to improve my time. Phobos: I’m takin’ off and takin’ a nap. Later.

(Phobos grabs his bag and departs from the group)

Jack: Abrasive as always… He really doesn’t change. Jack: Hm…? Isn’t that Kazuo out there at the edge of the field?

Deuce: Huh? Oh, you’re right, that does look like him. Deuce: That’s weird, he didn’t show up to club, but he’s still out here practicing? Wonder if something happened.

Jack: Beats me. Maybe he was feeling sick or something and only just now made it out.

Deuce: I know I’d feel embarrassed if I could only show up to the tail end of club… I don’t really blame him. Deuce: Maybe we should go check up on him, just to make sure he’s feeling okay.

Jack: It’s not a bad idea to make sure our upperclassmen are doing alright. Lemmie grab my bag and then we can head over.

(Jack and Deuce pause to pick up their gym bags and then walk across the field to meet with Kazuo at the furthest edge)

Kazuo: 27… 28… 29… 30! Kazuo: Whew…! Alright, time for a break~

Deuce: Hey Kaz!

Kazuo: Hm? Oh hey, Jack and Deuce! What’re you troublemakers up to?

Deuce: We just saw you out here from across the field, wondering what you were up to was all. Deuce: Are you feeling okay? You look like you’re out of breath.

Kazuo: Oh, haha! Yeah, I’m alright. I’m just out of breath ‘cuz I’m between reps. Kazuo: Today’s my upper body day! So I was using this tree’s low-hanging branch to do some pull-ups. It’s surprisingly really sturdy. Kazuo: You guys wanna join me? I was gonna do another set of pull-ups and then some push-ups after.

Jack: Hm… I’ve still got some energy left in me. Why not?

Deuce: I’ll join, too! I wouldn’t mind seeing just how far I can push myself to my limits.

Kazuo: Sweet! There’s another couple trees over here with some low-hanging branches you guys can use too! Let’s go!

(Some time passes, and the trio pause their training to take another break. The afternoon sun slowly starts to pass into sunset upon the field.)

Jack: So… you said you like to come out here to train? What goal are you training for?

Kazuo: Oh, nothing specific. I just want to stay in good shape for my job is all.

Deuce: Oh! I didn’t know you had a job, Kaz! What do you do?

Kazuo: Eheh, well… it’ll probably sound kind of made up considering our environment, but… I’m a Ghostbuster!

Deuce: A Ghostbuster…? You mean, like the movie?

Kazuo: Yeah! Exactly like the movie! I know it probably sounds fake, but it’s true! Kazuo: People call me out to the scene when they’re experiencing paranormal activity, and then I hunt down and exorcise the ghost or ghosts causing it.

Deuce: That’s really cool, actually! Why would that be weird?

Kazuo: Eh, well, I mean I haven’t been doing a lot of my job here because all the ghosts at the school are friendly… most of them even employed here.

Jack: That’s true. You’d get in serious trouble if you tried exorcising one of the staff ghosts on campus. Jack: There’s plenty of ghosts that are hostile and dangerous elsewhere, but here on campus pretty much all of them are friendly.

Kazuo: Yeah, exactly. Truth be told, I’m not used to being around so many friendly spirits. Kazuo: Most of the time when I get called out to investigate a haunting, the spirit’s either hostile or just clinging too hard to reality. Kazuo: Either way, they can’t stay in the realm of the living. It’s my job to catch them and send them back to where they belong. Kazuo: I call myself a “Ghostbuster” on paper ‘cuz it sounds more friendly, but really I’m more like a Grim Reaper in practice. Any spirit trapped in reality is a target for me, even if it’s freshly departed.

Deuce: So, what do you need to do all this training for? I wouldn’t think a job like that would be very physically taxing.

Kazuo: Haha! You might not think so, but honestly it’s a lot more draining than it sounds. Kazuo: Depending on the spirit, they can be either really easy to placate or extremely dangerous. I won’t know which it is until I’m on the scene, either. Kazuo: In practice, fighting a spirit isn’t any different than fighting a normal, living human. The only difference is that humans can’t use magic to fight back and evade your attacks. Kazuo: You know my friends Marcus and Matt, right? They’re kind of in the same business as me, they just hunt things other than ghosts. Kazuo: Since we’re all in the same boat together, I’ve been trying to get them to do training with me. But…

(Kaz recaps a flashback to a point in the past)

Marcus: Haah… Hahh… Alright, time out. Time out, time out. I need… I need a break.

Kazuo: What, already?! C’mon, bro, we just got started!

Marcus: I dunno how you keep doing this every day, Kaz. You have way too much energy.

Kazuo: Hey, I don’t do this every day, just every other day! On the days I don’t have track and field, I’m out here training! Kazuo: And how do I have too much energy?! This is easy mode!

Marcus: “Easy mode”, yeah speak for yourself on that one. I’m not a sports guy like you are, this is more than enough for me. I need to catch my breath…

Kazuo: Aren’t we in the same business? How do you even manage to do your job when you can barely do this much?

Marcus: Honestly, I usually I have adrenaline to keep me going. Marcus: Also, I’m not usually doing sit-ups, push-ups, and burpees when I’m running around like my life depends on it…!

Kazuo: You’d probably have to rely less on adrenaline if you trained like I did. C’mon, it’ll get easier when you do it more often! Kazuo: How you doin’ with it, Matt?

Matt: Ah, you don’t gotta worry ‘bout me none, I’m jus’ peachy~

Marcus: You don’t have any right to talk, you don’t have “normal” stamina to begin with.

Kazuo: Well, how ya feeling now? We still got another set of squats and burpees to do!

Marcus: I think I’m gonna throw up.

Matt: He’s exagguratin’.

Marcus: I’m gonna throw up on you specifically. Ugh…

(The flashback ends)

Deuce: Haha! I’m not surprised to hear that Marcus isn’t the most athletic of people. He certainly doesn’t look it.

Kazuo: And yet his job isn’t any different than mine! Can you believe that?! Kazuo: That guy’s gonna have a heart attack before he turns 30 if he keeps pushing himself like he does. Kazuo: I’ve been trying to get him to train with me so we can all stay fit together, but usually he says no and it’s just me on my own out here. I’m glad you guys could join me today, it’s nice to have some company every once in a while.

Jack: Hey… don’t mind me for asking, but you said that days that you don’t have Track and Field you’re usually out here doing supplementary training, right? Jack: Why’d you miss our club meeting today, then?

Kazuo: …Wait, what?

Deuce: Come to think of it, I feel like you’ve been missing a lot of club meetings lately. Whenever Vargas does roll call, I feel like I rarely hear you answer your name.

Kazuo: W-Wait, did I get my meeting days mixed up…?! I thought it was every Monday and Wednesday we had club!

Jack: Nope. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Kazuo: Damniiiiiiitttt…!! This whole time I thought I was just showing up early or club meetings got called off! Kazuo: God, I’m so stupid…! I’ve been doing all this training on my own for nothing!

Deuce: H-Hey, don’t take it too hard! It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve forgotten about something important and either showed up late or completely skipped on accident, either.

Kazuo: Yeah, but I hate that I’ve been tanking my attendance without even realizing…! That’s not gonna look good on my overall club standing…

Jack: Try not to beat yourself up too much about it. You’ve still been working hard, even if you haven’t got the marks to show it. Jack: Tell Vargas you’ve been doing solo training in your free time, and I’m sure he’ll forgive your absence. I’ll back you up on that, too.

Kazuo: Really…? You think so?

Deuce: Sure he will! I’ll be a witness for you, too, just to be sure.

Kazuo: Man… I’m still mad at myself for getting my dates mixed up like that, but I appreciate the help, guys.

Jack: Sure thing. Now you know, at least, so you can straighten up from here on out. Jack: We’re in the same dorm, so I can remind you before club starts to get ready if you need it.

Kazuo: Yeah, that’d be great. It’ll take me a minute to readjust my schedule for sure, I don’t wanna go on autopilot and forget again, after all. Kazuo: Speaking of time, it is getting pretty late now, huh? How ‘bout we stop by the Mystery Shop on the way back to the dorms and grab some snacks? Kazuo: It’ll be my treat, as thanks for helpin’ me figure this shitty situation out!

Kazuo: W-WHOAA-! (THUD) OOF! Kazuo: Damnit… Why are there so many things to trip over out here? Kazuo: C’mon Kaz, this is the last day to get this done. Just gotta stick it out for one more day and you’ll never have to hike out here again. Kazuo: But… ugh, I feel like I haven’t made any progress at all on finding that mushroom that Jade wants…! Kazuo: How the hell does Crewel expect us to collect these ingredients if we have to go through so much trouble to get them?! Only one guy on campus has them and he’ll only give them away for high-value trade?! Kazuo: I can’t imagine anyone else had luck either if I’m struggling this much… Maybe he'll give us a pass if we all came back empty-handed…

(Snap!)

Kazuo: -?!

(Kazuo immediately turns around and rears his bat back at the ready)

???: Whoa now! No need to be pointing your bat at me, I’m friendly~

(Vantablack emerges from the underbrush and comes into view)

Kazuo: Oh-! Hey Vanta! Sorry, I thought you were some kind of wild animal or something. Kazuo: How’s it going? And… why are you sneaking around in the woods?

Vantablack: I’m not sneaking anywhere! I was just going for a little walk, getting some fresh air. You know, normal things.

Kazuo: Oh, fair enough! It is kinda nice out here… or well, it would be if I didn’t have this stupid assignment I had to focus on.

Vantablack: Oh yeah? What’s going on? Vantablack: Lemmie guess, you’re out here looking for something for an assignment? Alchemy, right?

Kazuo: Kind of- actually yeah, how’d you know? Kazuo: Are you… secretly a psychic?

Vantablack: Hah! Not exactly. Vantablack: Every time I’ve come out here for the last week there’s been people trudging around looking for alchemy ingredients. You haven’t been the first.

Kazuo: Oh, okay yeah, that makes more sense. Kazuo: Well… If you’re out here all that often, maybe you’ll know where I can find this ingredient I’m looking for.

Vantablack: Oh yeah? And what might that be?

Kazuo: Well… it’s kind of a long story, but…

(Fade cut while Kazuo recaps his tale to Vantablack)

Vantablack: So lemmie get this straight, you need this really rare mushroom to trade for another mushroom so you can take it back to your class? Vantablack: And since we don’t grow any on campus, your only luck is to find some either in the wild or get some from Jade, who’s holding it for ransom.

Kazuo: I wouldn’t call it ransom, more just a trade or an exchange. But yeah, that’s about it.

Vantablack: Heheh… sounds to me like you’ve been sent on a wild goose chase, Kaz.

Kazuo: What do you mean?

Vantablack: I mean, how do you even know this mushroom exists and Jade isn’t just making up excuses to not let you have any of what he has? I can see him doing that just for a good laugh.

Kazuo: Marcus said the same thing when I told him about it, but I just don’t think Jade’s that kind of person. I mean, he took the time to grow that really finicky mushroom all on his own, so he can’t be all that bad. Kazuo: I looked up that mushroom online just in case, and he was telling me the truth about it. I know it exists, I know what it looks like, and I know approximately where it’s supposed to grow. Kazuo: Now it’s just a matter of finding it, and I have until sundown to do it.

Vantablack: Sundown? Why sundown?

Kazuo: One of the things I read about the mushroom is that it’s really mobile. It, like, squishes back into the ground during the night, and pops back out again during the day. Kazuo: Once nightfall comes, I won’t be able to harvest it until the sun comes back up. Kazuo: Today is my last day to look for it too; that lab period for my class is tomorrow. I need to get some of that mushroom he has before then, or I’ll be letting my whole group down.

Vantablack: Sounds like you’ve really got your work cut out for you then. I won’t hold you back-

Kazuo: Wait! Actually, if you’re not busy, Vanta, maybe you could help me look for it?

Vantablack: Hmm? You want me to hunt mushrooms for you?

Kazuo: Not entirely! Just- help me keep an eye out for it! Kazuo: You’ve been through these woods probably a hundred times more than me. I’ve been hiking through here for a whole week and have come up completely empty-handed. Kazuo: Pleaaase? Just this one time? I could really use your help, Vanta!

Vantablack: Alright, alright! I’ll help, but only ‘cuz I think it’s cute that you begged. Vantablack: It’s been a while since I’ve hunted for something that’s actually a challenge to find, too. It’ll be good practice, so I don’t get rusty.

Kazuo: Awesome! Thank you so much!

Vantablack: Yeah yeah, so tell me about what this thing looks like.

Kazuo: So it’s a small mushroom with a thin stem, and it grows in little clusters like this. Kazuo: It’s dark purple on top, and its underside and stem are pale blue, and it kind of looks like it’s glowing when it gets hit by the light.

Vantablack: …That’s it? I thought you said these were supposed to be rare, I saw some growing earlier while I was trekking around.

Kazuo: REALLY?! Where?!

Vantablack: Back that way, sticking out of one of the trees. Vantablack: I’m pretty sure I remember where I saw it. Follow me, I’ll retrace my steps.

(Vantablack and Kazuo trudge through the underbrush, footsteps crunching on dirt and twigs as they walk)

Vantablack: See it? Riiiiight up there. It’s hanging off the trunk of this tree, maybe about 15-20ft above us. Vantablack: When I was walking around earlier, I saw a funny looking shadow on the ground. So I looked up and saw that mushroom waving around in the treetop. Vantablack: The light hitting it made the shadow turn purple. Pretty cool, but I didn’t need it for anything, so I just kept walking.

Kazuo: No way, there it actually is…! Vanta, you’re a hawk-eyed genius!

Vantablack: I know~

Kazuo: Man, no wonder I couldn’t see them before… I probably should get some new glasses when I get home. Kazuo: But, now that I know where it is all I have to do is grab it! Uhm… but how am I actually gonna do that…?

Vantablack: Just… climb up there and grab it? What’s the big deal?

Kazuo: Well, uh… I’ve never really climbed a tree before. I’m kinda afraid of heights, actually.

Vantablack: You’re gonna let that stop you? I thought you Savanaclaws were supposed to be more resilient than that.

Kazuo: I’m not gonna let it stop me! I just need to figure out how I’m gonna do this without getting hurt… Kazuo: I could try and use magic to get it down… but that might damage the mushroom, or worse yet it’ll send a whole branch tumbling down on top of my head. Kazuo: If I had a broom I could fly up there and grab it… but it’s already getting close to dark, if I went back to get one by the time I got back it’d probably already be too late.

Vantablack: Probably shoulda thought of that before you got out here.

Kazuo: I know! I was already so nervous about how close I was cutting it on this deadline, I just wasn’t thinking. Kazuo: The easiest way really is just climbing up and grabbing it myself, I think. I’m not looking forward to this…

Vantablack: Ah, it’ll be fine! If you fall, I’ll just catch you, how about that?

Kazuo: You sure that’ll be safe?

Vantablack: Brother, I can lift a full-grown man over my shoulder with one arm. Catching you would be like holding a handful of grapes~

Kazuo: Alright then… whew. Can you give me a boost to this lowest branch, then?

Vantablack: Sure thing.

(With a bit of shuffling, Vantablack helps hoist Kazuo up into the tree’s branches)

Vantablack: Uuuup you go!

Kazuo: W-Whoa… okay, this is immediately intimidating…!

Vantablack: Just keep moving! Find a momentum and put one hand over the other, you’ll be fine!

Kazuo: A-Alright…! Kazuo: One hand over the other, one hand over the other… don’t look down, just keep moving, one hand over the other… Kazuo: I-I think it’s working…! I can almost reach it now! Just a little bit further and…!

(Kazuo plucks the mushroom out from the trunk of the tree)

Kazuo: I-I got it…! I got it!!

Vantablack: Hah! And you didn’t even fall, how about that~

Kazuo: Oh god, that’s right, now I need to get back down. Uh… Kazuo: H-Hey Vanta? How do I get down, exactly?

Vantablack: Just climb down?

Kazuo: U-Uh… This is really high up. I don’t think I can…!

Vantablack: Just do what you did in reverse!

Kazuo: But the mushroom…!

Vantablack: Oh my god, just throw it down and I’ll catch it for you. Sheesh…

(After some scuffling, Kazuo finally manages to get down from the tree)

Kazuo: Y-You still have it, right?

Vantablack: It’s right here in my hand. See?

Kazuo: Okay, thank god. Kazuo: Hahaha… M-Man I can’t believe I just did that. My everything is still shaking.

Vantablack: Still got one last branch to go. Hop on down, you won’t get hurt from that height.

Kazuo: Yeah… yeah, you’re right. Kazuo: Thanks for helping me with that again, Vanta. I don’t think I coulda done it without your-

(Kazuo hops down from the tree, making an audible squish on impact)

Kazuo: Wha-? Aw man, what the hell did I just step on? I hope that wasn’t an animal turd or something… HUH?! Kazuo: YOU’RE KIDDING ME- A FROGDOSS MUSHROOM?!

Vantablack: Huh? What, that silly thing? Yeah, they’re all over the place around here.

Kazuo: This is-! That’s the mushroom I’ve been needing this whole time! You’re telling me I coulda been finding them all over the forest floor in here?! Kazuo: Damnit…! I’ve been so busy looking up in the treetops for the velvet-cap that I wasn’t looking down at my feet for the frogdoss! I really WAS sent on a wild goose chase!

Vantablack: Pff- Bahahaha! You spent this whole week looking for a stupid tree-mushroom when you coulda been done on day one if you just looked down?! Vantablack: Oh, that’s rich~ You really would have failed if you didn’t meet me here in the first place~

Kazuo: Man… Now I just feel stupid. I spent all this time looking for this super-rare mushroom, and now I have it and I don’t even need it anymore! It’s just gonna go to waste… Kazuo: …Wait. This is a super-rare mushroom. I might not need it, but maybe Crewel will give me extra credit if I bring it back to class! I bet nobody else in class found something as cool as this EVER! Kazuo: Though, I would feel bad if I didn’t give Jade some too… since he looked like he was really looking forward to getting some… Alright, that settles it! Kazuo: I’ll just tear up some of this squished frogdoss here by my feet and bring that back to class, take one of the velvet-cap back to Jade, and bring the other back to Crewel! Everybody wins!

Vantablack: Soooooo… are you gonna pay me for helping you out? My services aren’t exactly free, you know.

Kazuo: Huh? I mean I can, but I don’t have any money on me right now…

Vantablack: Hm… ya know what? I’ll just take one of these.

(Vantablack grabs one of the velvet-cap mushrooms from Kazuo’s hand)

Kazuo: Wha-! Hey!

Vantablack: What? You found three of them and only need two, right? So me taking one shouldn’t be that big of a deal.

Kazuo: I mean, I guess not, but-

Vantablack: Besides… I’m kinda interested to see what this tastes like~

Kazuo: Tastes…?! I mean… Okay, well, you have fun with it then, but are you sure you should be eating that? I don’t even know if it’s poisonous or not.

Vantablack: Ehh, it doesn’t matter. I’ll find out on the way back to Diasomnia~ Vantablack: Homph~

(Vantablack pops the mushroom into their mouth)

Vantablack: Oh! It’s sour! A little bitter… tastes like a weird, salted lemon rind. I kinda like it, actually~ Vantablack: Well, catch ya later, Kazzy~ I’ll see you in the medical ward if it turns out this is poisonous!

(Vantablack trudges away happily, leaving Kazuo alone in the forest)

Kazuo: Man, they’re a weird one alright, but at least they’re happy I guess? Kazuo: And ya know what, I’m happy too~ Today’s been one hell of an adventure! Extra credit, here I come!

(SR) Lab Coats (Part 1): "I Can’t Really Turn Back Now."

(NRC: Botanical Garden – Subtropical Zone)

Kazuo: Okaaay... So out of this list of ingredients I’m supposed to collect something called… “Frogdoss Mushroom Caps”. Kazuo: Let’s see… Frogdoss, frogdoss… what does frogdoss look like, exactly…? That’s not exactly a normal plant name… Kazuo: What do my notes say… “A mushroom named for its large, shiny caps, which grow in such a shape that its body resembles a squatting frog or toad. Usually a shade of green, brown, gold.” Kazuo: “Can often be found sprouting on or near rotting logs or in piles of dead leaves and foliage.” Kazuo: That sounds like it should be obvious, so… where is it…? Kazuo: Maybe under this tree…? It’s kinda damp under here, so maybe… Hey, that looks it right there! Kazuo: Lucky me, I found it right away! I’ll take some field sketches first before I go harvesting any, since they’ll be great for my notes~

(Jade approaches Kazuo from behind)

Jade: Good afternoon, Kazuo.

Kazuo: Oh, hey Jade! Sorry, am I in the way?

Jade: A little. I just need to move past you for a moment. I’m cultivating a specimen here under this tree.

Kazuo: A specimen…? Wait, is the frogdoss under here yours?

Jade: Indeed it is! Jade: Magnificent, isn’t it? It took me quite some time to get it grown to this state. Jade: Frogdoss is notoriously finicky to grow in captivity, so this is quite an achievement for me as a budding mycologist.

Jade: I was able to find some substrate that was perfect to create a starter for its mycelium to take root, and filled this log with it so it had plenty of room to grow. Jade: And now here it is. These large, luscious caps are proof of all my hard work and efforts.

Kazuo: It looks great! You did a really good job. Kazuo: Hey, uh, out of curiosity, do you know if there’s any more of it growing here in the botanical gardens?

Jade: Sadly, no. Most mushrooms grown here in the botanical gardens that I’ve been able to find have grown entirely by accident, and they’re usually removed before they can spread into a healthy cluster. Jade: It’s a shame, really. I’d like to advocate for more mushroom cultivation here in the gardens, but as far as I know the only ones we have are the ones I’ve been growing.

Kazuo: Oh, that’s… that kinda sucks, actually. Kazuo: Uh… This might seem kinda rude to ask, but I don’t suppose you’d be willing to part with some of your frogdoss, would you?

Jade: What do you mean?

Kazuo: Well, uh… how do I put this… Kazuo: See, I’m taking this advanced alchemical transmutation class, and we’re doing a group project that requires us to do some field work before our next lab assignment. Kazuo: Each group member is supposed to collect a different kind of ingredient, so we can make potions out of them next week. Kazuo: Our ingredients were silver hogweed, thorny whitefruit, and frogdoss caps. Frogdoss is the one that I picked.

Jade: I see… so you want to harvest some to bring back to your class.

Kazuo: Yeah, exactly!

Jade: Then I’m afraid I must decline.

Kazuo: Eh- Why not? I mean, there’s so much you’ve grown I figured maybe just a little…?

Jade: Perhaps so, but you see it’s more difficult than that. Jade: This is a very sensitive mushroom, and if I were to remove even one of the layers of the caps forming its distinctive shape... Jade: The removal process would likely damage the remaining caps, become infected, and then rot. Jade: I’m actually quite proud of my work in developing this fungus. It took me several months to cultivate, and then several weeks for its caps to grow to such an impressive size. Jade: Parting with such a treasure would be like separating me from my own child… I don’t think I’d very much have the heart to simply give it away on a whim.

Kazuo: O-Oh! No, that’s okay! I totally understand. Kazuo: I wouldn’t wanna ask something of you if it means that much to you… that’d be really mean. Kazuo: Though… I told my group that I’d find that specific ingredient, so I can’t really turn back now, it’d throw the whole plan into disorder… Kazuo: I’ll have to find some other way to get it, but… I don’t even know if it grows in here. What am I gonna do…?

Jade: Hm… what if we made an exchange?

Kazuo: Huh? What kind of exchange?

Jade: Parting with such a magnificent fungus is quite heartbreaking for me… but perhaps I’d be willing to part with at least one of its caps if you’d be willing to find me something worth its weight in exchange.

Kazuo: Oh, sure thing! That makes sense to me. What do you need me to get?

Jade: There’s a site just outside of campus where a very rare mushroom is said to grow, but its growth site is also very difficult to get to. Jade: If you could perhaps help me with collecting some of it, then I’d be more than willing to part with some of my beloved frogdoss caps.

Kazuo: Really?! Sure thing! I’d love to help with that! Tell me about it, what does it look like?

Jade: It’s called a “Velvet-Cap Agaricus”. It’s a small mushroom, with a dark purple cap, and its stalk and gills are a pale blue. Jade: It's a parasitic fungus that grows in very high locations, like the tops of trees and on the sides of cliffs, and it can only grow in areas with very high magical density, like our school campus. Jade: I’ve been trying to locate some for a very long time, but as of now I’ve had no luck at all. Purchasing one is out of the question, too, as they’re very expensive due to being so rare.

Kazuo: Huh… and you’re sure there’s some outside of campus?

Jade: I know there must be, we're one of the few locations with prime growth conditions. It’s simply a matter of locating it and collecting it before somebody else does. Jade: If you manage to locate and harvest some of this precious mushroom, I’ll be happy to relinquish my ownership of my beloved frogdoss to you.

Kazuo: Well, I can’t really turn back now, since there’s not going to be any more here in the botanical gardens… I’ll see what I can do!

Jade: Excellent! It’s a deal then. I’ll be looking forward to seeing the fruits of your hard work, heheheh~ Jade: In the meantime, I should probably move my sprout here as soon as possible. Jade: If what you say about your class is true, then this is no longer a safe place to nurture it. Anyone could come by and steal it away without any care for its well-being.

(Jade picks up the log with the mushroom and walks away)

Kazuo: This definitely won’t be easy if even Jade doesn’t know where this mushroom is yet… but I have a week to figure out where this thing might be. Kazuo: I’m not exactly a mycologist, and I’m not all that good at finding things on hikes, but I’m gonna have to try. My good grade depends on it!

Who's the Best (and worst) Roommate?

1. Matt. Simply by virtue that he's... never around? He spends extremely long amounts of time away from his room (spending the nights with Marcus usually instead), which means when he was a 2nd year you'd get the whole room to yourself most days. The times he actually is in his home dorm he mostly keeps to himself and reads or listens to audio books. He does like to talk and make friendly conversation though, so if you initiate he'll perk right up from whatever he's doing to chat. The most bother you'll have from him is when him, Marcus, and Kaz get together for a group study session, but they're able to move if you need privacy.

2. Kaz. He's just a sweet boy! If a bit if a pushover sometimes. He likes to talk and get to know you better, but is understanding if you'd prefer to be alone. Any mess he makes he makes sure to keep to his side of the room, though he also gets antsy when the room is a mess he doesn't like to voice his concerns when it happens. If you're feeling under the weather he'll offer to get you something from Sam's to help you feel better. He spends a lot of time away from his room throughout the day and mostly just comes back to sleep late at night (though he tries to be quiet as possible when he comes back too late). Every week him, Marcus, and Matt will have group study sessions and alternate between each other hosting, but they can usually move to the lobby if you ask.

3. Stahli. Yet another sweet boy! He likes to talk about his day and your day, and might offer to make you some tea and a treat when he's making some for himself. Actually he might offer you food often, since he's always looking for a taste tester for his cooking experiments. He's a little bit of a neat freak though and might pester you to clean things up if you leave the room too unkempt for his taste. Also, he can't stand strong fragrances so he might complain if you want to burn a candle/incense with too strong a fragrance or if you use body spray/perfume.

4. Phobos. He's antisocial and doesn't like being bothered. Being his roommate is only nice if you don't want someone to talk to, cuz chances are he won't want to talk to you even if you try and initate conversation. It's possible to befriend him, but it will just take a bit of time. He stays up really late on his computer, so hopefully you can sleep through the clicking of his keyboard. He gets pissed off if you try to have company over, but can ignore them by playing on his computer with his headphones on.

5. Marcus. He keeps to himself for the most part, so you won't have to worry about him bothering you, however insomnia + night terrors will make sleeping in the same room as him a bit of a challenge. You might hear him wake up or make startled noises periodically through the night. Also his boyfriend Matt is usually hanging around the room with him and will often spend the night. Somehow he's even more nocturnal than Marcus is. Hopefully you'll get used to it. Other than that him, Matt, and Kaz will have group study sessions sometimes and he'll host it in his dorm room. He's understanding though if you want him to move somewhere else.

6. Nyx. Unfortunately staying with him would kind of suck unless you share a lot of characteristics with him. He spends a lot of time alone in his room when classes are out, so I hope you weren't hoping for privacy. Because of his low heat tolerance he requires special accommodations and keeps the room fairly cool, so hopefully you like cooler temperatures too. He often stays up late on his computer and does voice calls with his friends, and while he'll try and lower his voice he still isn't that good at monitoring his volume. There's also a slim chance of Spontaneous Eels knocking on your door at any given moment with no warning. No they won't go away either if you turn them away. He sleeps with a sound machine and a lava lamp cuz he can't stand the dark and quiet. Also he will absolutely get upset if you have too loud of company over, even if he doesn't say something. Hypocrite.

7. Vantablack. As if being around them for long periods of time wasn't unnerving or invasive enough, their side of the room is a godamn quarantine zone. They like to decorate their side of the room with bones and teeth strung up like string lights along their bed and there's a locked chest at the foot of their bed which you can only assume is full of human skulls. Weird sigils are painted on the walls around the window and by the doorway and they will NOT let you scrub them off, no matter how much they bother you. There's a weird smell of moss and lake water that permeates their side of the room at all times. You get the feeling they might have been rummaging through your things when you're not home but you have no proof. They're talkative and really want to get to know you better, but you get this weird feeling that they don't just want to get closer to you because they want to be friends...

(SR) Ceremony Robes (Part 2): “I Won’t Let You Down!”

(Savanaclaw Dorm: Leona’s Room)

Ruggie: Almost time for the Entrance Ceremony~ Leona, are you ready yet?

Leona: Yeah, yeah, I’m dressed. You don’t have to keep nagging me.

Ruggie: Sometimes I wonder if I have to nag you more, really. Feels like getting you up on time today was pulling teeth.

Leona: Speaking of pulling teeth, how’s preparations going for the banquet after the ceremony? Leona: After how much money you asked for, I’m expecting something real good to compensate.

Ruggie: Ah, it should be going fine… I think. Ruggie: I left most of the dirty work to Kaz, since he seemed so enthusiastic to help. All I did was wrestle in a couple of third years to be his extra hands.

Leona: Hoh? Well this should be interesting. I wouldn’t put my faith in any of their hands without someone guiding them every step of the way. Leona: Well, if dinner ends up sucking, at least I’ll get a show out of it.

Ruggie: That’s cold, Leona~ you don’t care at all about your poor underclassman at all, do you?

Leona: I’m not his caretaker. If he bit off more than he could chew and was so enthusiastic to do it, I’m not about to stop him. Leona: It’s getting close to the time to leave. Let’s head down.

Ruggie: ‘Kayyy~ Ruggie: Aaahh~ I wonder if Kaz is doin’ alright manning those third years all on his own. Ruggie: I told him I’d bring some muscle to help him out, but I didn’t say I’d be corralling them for him past that. Guess we’ll find out soon enough.

(Savanaclaw Dorm: Lounge)

(The sound of sizzling meat and busy bodies bustling is thick in the air)

Kazuo: Alright, looks like the pozole’s coming along pretty good. Now all it needs to do is simmer for the next couple hours. Kazuo: By the time the entrance ceremony’s done, it should be ready! This is perfect timing! Kazuo: Hey, tamale station! How’re things comin’ along over there?

Savanaclaw Mob A: We’re doin’ good! Almost done with this batch!

Savanaclaw Mob B: Hey, what are we supposed to do if we can’t tie the corn husks closed?

Kazuo: Oh, you don’t need to tie them shut! That’s just a bonus step. Here, I’ll show you how to fold them shut, so you don’t gotta worry about it~

Savanaclaw Mob B: Oh-! Thanks, man!

Ruggie: Whoa…! Everything’s actually working out alright in here!

Leona: Huh… color me impressed. Things might go better than expected tonight after all.

Kazuo: Oh! Hey, everyone! It’s Leona and Ruggie!

(All the Savanaclaw Mobs cheer at their arrival)

Ruggie: W-What the hell’s this enthusiasm about? He really got them all psyched up.

Kazuo: Hehe~ I’m guessing it’s about that time, right?

Leona: Just about. We’re gonna start heading over soon. Leona: If you want, you and your helpers over here can stay here and keep working. I’ll let the Headmaster know you got my approval.

Kazuo: Oh! I mean if that’s alright with you. I’ve got a few more dishes I wanted to work on at the last minute, so they’ll be hot and ready by the time the new first years get here.

Leona: Yeah, ‘s no problem at all.

Ruggie: I dunno how the hell you managed to keep all these third years in line, Kaz. Like, I can keep them managed sometimes, but you give them too much to work with and they all fall apart.

Kazuo: Oh, well that’s easy. Kazuo: Everyone in this dorm looks up to Leona with high respect. All I had to do was tell them was this was for him, and they all got enthused to help out.

Ruggie: And the workload?

Kazuo: Well managing that’s easy too. Every part of today’s meal is just a bunch of small tasks that come together to make something bigger. Kazuo: I broke everything down into the easiest steps possible. Chop the onions, put the onions in a pan, stir the onions constantly until they look brown. Kazuo: Grab some tamal dough and spread it on the corn husk, put some filling inside of it, fold it and tie it shut. Kazuo: Give someone too many tasks and they’ll get overwhelmed, but give them nothing to do and they’ll feel like they’re being left out. As long as someone has something easy to do, everyone will feel like a team!

Leona: That’s about the long and short of it. You could stand to take some notes, Ruggie. Otherwise when I graduate I’ll be leaving him in charge of Savanaclaw next.

Ruggie: That’s if you even graduate, Leona. With your grades, you might just be here forever.

Savanaclaw Mob C: Hey Kaz! Should we start barbequing the veggies yet?

Kazuo: Oh, not yet! We’ll do that when the ceremony’s over, that way they’ll still be hot when everybody gets back!

Savanaclaw Mob C: Got it! Good thinking!

Leona: Well, I’ll leave you all to it. Keep up the good work, Kaz.

Kazuo: Heheh~ Thanks, Leona. I won’t let you down!

Ruggie: Ngaaahhh, I can’t BELIEVE he left me with all this to figure out on my own. Ruggie: First I have to decide on what we’re even going to serve, and then I have to wrangle all the students needed to even make it happen. This is way too much for me to handle my myself~

Kazuo: Huh? What’s wrong, Ruggie? Did something happen?

Ruggie: Oh Kaz! Perfect timing~ Maybe you can help me with my little dilemma~ Ruggie: Leona strapped me with figuring out all the dining arrangements for the night of the entrance ceremony, and I don’t know what I’m gonna do for it at all. Ruggie: If you’d be willing to lend me a hand, it’d take a hell of a weight off my shoulders~

Kazuo: Oh! Well, sure, I can help with that! I don’t really have anything I need to do for the ceremony, and it sounds like it’ll be a lot of fun! Kazuo: So, where are you at with everything? Do we have any kind of menu limitations or a budget to stick to?

Ruggie: Not really to both. Leona just said, “Make a list of whatever you need, and I’ll get it for you. Just as long as it’s not something stupid or gross.” Ruggie: His pockets run pretty deep, so I doubt he’ll care what we get as long as we have enough food for everyone. Ruggie: Usually for special occasions we pull out the barbeques so we have plenty of cooking space to make things real fast, if that gives you any ideas for things we could be cooking.

Kazuo: Hmm… So we need a lot of food so that everyone can have something to eat, and a lotta guys in this dorm eat a lot too because they’re athletes that are constantly burning energy. Kazuo: …Oh! What if we made some tamales?

Ruggie: Tam-all-ehs? What’s that?

Kazuo: You don’t know what a tamale is? I woulda thought for sure that you would have! Kazuo: You make this paste - kind of like a dough - out of corn flour, stuff it with meat, cheese, or whatever else you want, and then wrap them up in corn husks and steam them in a big pot. Kazuo: They’re really good! But they’re super labor intensive, so we usually only make them for special occasions. Kazuo: The whole family gets involved with spreading the dough, stuffing it, then twisting it up in the husks and getting them ready to steam.

Ruggie: Ohh! We have something like that at home! We just call them something else~ Ruggie: Me and my grandma would make that too for special occasions, but only whenever we’re able to get our hands on the ingredients~

Kazuo: Oh, sweet! Then you understand how to make them too! Kazuo: I have a lot of recipes on my phone that my parents and grandparents taught me how to make. We can double or triple the recipes to make lots of food for everyone! Kazuo: I’m thinking tamales might be a good start, though if we’re gonna make a lot of them then we’ll need a lot of extra people to help with putting them together… Two people definitely won’t be enough for the whole dorm.

Ruggie: I can talk to some of the upperclassmen about helping out with that part, so that’s no biggie. But we’re gonna need more than just that to make everyone happy.

Kazuo: For sure, for sure. Hmm, what else… Ah, lemmie actually see what recipes I have written down on my phone. That’ll help give me some ideas... Kazuo: …Ah, what? I guess I forgot to write down some of my mom’s recipes, all I have is stuff from my dad and abuela. Dang it.

Ruggie: Ah, man. That sucks, but I guess that narrows things down, right?

Kazuo: Yeah… Oh! But I do have abuela’s recipe for pozole! It’s really good, so we can make a big batch of that too! Kazuo: Could maybe make some carne asada or some carnitas and have a big table where people could make some tacos or burritos, too. Then people can have something that lets them put whatever they want in it. Kazuo: Oh, and having some barbequed veggies might be nice too, so people that don’t eat meat can have stuff too. We could do some zucchini, maybe some skillet potatoes, asparagus… Kazuo: Hey, you don’t think this is too much, do you?

Ruggie: Nahh, the more the merrier! The more we make, the more likely we’ll get to have leftovers, too!

Kazuo: Oh, true that! Kazuo: Alright then, I think that should be enough! If we can double or triple some of these recipes I have written on my phone, I think we’ll be set. Kazuo: Now, the question is how are we gonna cook it all…? Not to put too little faith into our dormmates, but I don’t exactly trust most of the guys here with cooking at least half of these recipes, let alone handle a knife…

Ruggie: Leave all of that to me~ I know everyone in the dorm that knows their way around a kitchen, so I can throw everyone around, no problem. Ruggie: Sounds like you know your way around a kitchen, so you and I can handle the more intensive stuff.

Kazuo: Alright, sweet! Then all that’s left to do is get all our ingredients and get prepping. Kazuo: Some of this stuff is gonna need to marinate for at least a day, so the sooner we can get started on that, the better. Kazuo: You think anyone’s available to help us carry things back? With how much we’re gonna be getting, I don’t think the two of us are gonna be able to carry it all.

Ruggie: Dunno, but if nothing else we could always borrow a cart from the Magift field or something.

Kazuo: Good idea! Alright, then let’s go get what we need and get to work!

Ruggie: And now I don’t have to do all the heavy lifting on my own! You’re a lifesaver, Kaz~ Shishishishi~
