Sickening Realization
Quine paced back and forth, deep in thought.
They, admittedly, weren't sure what to think. All of the evidence had been presented to them, everything made sense, but was it that easy? Was everything Quine feared really true?
There had to be something that was out of place. Something that didn't align correctly, that a little digging would reveal the whole thing was a farce.
But nothing came up. Everything was airtight.
Quine may be stubborn, but they weren't unreasonable. Tears gathered in their eyes as they realized the true weight of what they had done. Quine sat down on their bed, staring at the floor.
They were just like them. They'd shot, killed, and mangled an innocent person. Fox hadn't done anything to them, they'd been looking after Mercury when Quine couldn't, they'd had a family and kids. Quine had forced Fox into making a deal with a God, just like the U.N.S.C. had.
And worst of all, Fox wasn't even angry at them. They just accepted it. Another horrible thing to happen in an ever-growing list of horrible things.
Quine wasn't even angry anymore. Everything was always easier when they were angry, they didn't have to think about their actions or the consequences that came after. They just acted. But now that the storm cleared and the Sun was out, Quine was left with nothing but their thoughts.
A spark of anger ignited in their chest when they remembered how Elijah looked during their talk. He wasn't speaking, and was barely aware of what was happening. He'd been tortured. He'd been tortured and Quine couldn't help him. That stupid idiot had tried taking the fall for them.
After a moment, Quine snuffed out that spark before it could grow. Elijah was safe, now. He was in the other room, being checked over by King. Everyone was okay. Kennedy was out on watch, Finn was with Eli, and Auburn was out on a supply run.
Quine breathed out slowly, leaning back against the headboard. They needed to do something to get out their restless energy, but they were exhausted.
Fortunately, there was a knock at the door to bring them away from their thoughts. Quine waved a hand and the door opened.
"Hey, blueberry. How are you holding up?" King asked, coming in and sitting next to them on their bed. The door clicked shut.
In lieu of an answer, they leaned up against the medic, pushing their aura onto him.
"Not good, then," he said. They wrapped an arm around Quine, bringing them closer. "Elijah's doing fine. His mouth is already in working order," he chuckled, "He's already talking about how Mom needs to get a new radio, apparently the Freelancers' Secret Service has been tracking us this entire time."
Quine said nothing, but let the tears steadily tracking down their face talk for them. They wrapped their arms around King's stomach.
King continued talking, rubbing circles on Quine's back. "He said he doesn't want anyone going after the person who tortured him. Which I think is stupid, but I trust his judgement."
"King.. am I a bad person?" They mumbled, sniffling.
"What answer are you looking for right now?" He asked.
Quine buried their face in his side, holding them tight. They shrugged half-heartedly. King sighed.
"I don't think you're a good person," they said, "You've gotta be some brand of fucked up to fit in here. I mean, I like poisoning people for fun. Kennedy's a bit too trigger happy. Finn's a fucking idiot. Elijah just got tortured again and walked it off. Auburn didn't get her reputation as a space pirate just for kicking stones around." He paused, looking down at Quine with a smile. "None of us are good people, Qi. But we're family, and you're ours. That matters a hell of a lot more to me than whether or not you're a good person."
They nodded, a weak purr emanating from their throat. King brought his hand up and started playing with their hair.
"Any ideas of what you wanna do now?"
Quine let out a sob, shaking their head.
"That's okay, hermosa. You don't need to have everything figured out right now. We've got your six." King pat them on the head, scratching their scalp. Their purr grew in strength.
They may not know what to do now, but Quine was sure everything was going to be okay.
Everything was going to be okay..

Lou Reed - The Bottom Line Soundcheck, February 1983
Friends, I'm back on the Jokermen podcast this week to discuss Lou Reed's Robert Quine-assisted 1983 double LP Live In Italy. Listen in! Always a pleasure — hopefully my stabs at humor and/or profundity are not incredibly annoying. Initially only released across the pond, Live In Italy still feels like a bit of a hidden gem in the Louevre; not sure if Lou just forgot about it entirely or decided it wasn't something he wanted included in that big RCA box that came out a while back. If you haven't checked it out or need to revisit, it's a killer, definitely an essential chapter in the all-too-brief Reed/Quine saga. Easily accessible via streaming services, I think.
Less easily accessible is this Bottom Line tape of Lou, Quine, Fernando Saunders and Fred Maher warming up before their first live shows a few months before invading Italy. A cool document, with some interesting rarities and arrangements; songs like "The Day John Kennedy Died," "Vicious Circle" and "A Gift" wouldn't be played much (or at all) after '83. The energy level isn't quite as high as it would get with an actual audience present, but it's pretty high all the same. And even though Quine and Reed's relationship was already pretty fractured at this point, it doesn't stop Lou from praising his guitarist. "Damn!" he exclaims at the end of Quine's typically tortured "Waves of Fear" solo. You'll likely say the same thing when you hear it.

Charade (Stanley Donen, 1963)
Cast: Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Walter Matthau, James Coburn, George Kennedy, Ned Glass, Dominique Minot, Jacques Marin. Screenplay: Peter Stone, Marc Behm. Cinematography: Charles Lang. Art direction: Jean d'Eaubonne. Film editing: Jim Clark. Music: Henry Mancini. Charade was dismissed in its day as a pleasant but derivative entertainment, with touches of Hitchcock and a bit of James Bond in the mix, a film that would be nothing without its star teaming of Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant. It would also inspire other star-teamed romantic adventures with one-word titles, like Warren Beatty and Susannah York in Kaleidoscope (Jack Smight, 1966) and Shirley MacLaine and Michael Caine in Gambit (Ronald Neame, 1966), and Charade's director, Stanley Donen, would even repeat the formula with Gregory Peck and Sophia Loren in Arabesque (1966). But Charade has survived today as a classic when the others have mostly been forgotten. The star teaming has a lot to do with it, of course: Who doesn't want to see the two most charming people in the world together? Owing to Grant's genetic gift for looking much younger than he was, even the 25-year age difference between Grant and Hepburn only slightly tests the limits of what one can accept in a romantic pairing.* But the film also makes sly references to the difference in their ages, and wisely makes Hepburn's character into the more active one in initiating a relationship. Charade also has an exceptionally witty screenplay, with Peter Stone largely responsible for the final script from the story he and Mark Behm had been unable to sell to the studios until they turned it into a novel that was serialized in Redbook magazine. It has a near-perfect supporting cast, including three actors at turning points in their careers: Walter Matthau, James Coburn, and George Kennedy. All of them would move out of television and into the movies after Charade, and all three would win Oscars for their work. And in  Donen it had a director whose lightness of touch had been honed in MGM musicals, including the greatest of them all, Singin' in the Rain (1952).
*Compare, for example, the similar age gap between James Stewart and Kim Novak in Bell, Book and Candle (Richard Quine, 1958). After that film, Stewart gave up playing romantic leads. Grant made much the same choice: Charade was his antepenultimate film: Although he would make one more, Father Goose (Ralph Nelson, 1964), that paired him with a younger actress, Leslie Caron, in his final film, Walk, Don't Run (Charles Walters, 1966), he was the older man who serves as matchmaker to young lovers -- a role that was based on the part played by Charles Coburn in The More the Merrier (George Stevens, 1943).

hi quin! how’s your day going? what kind of music have you been listening to lately??
hope you have a great day <3
My day’s improving - im usually up at 4:30, but I decided to nap until 5:30, and then my cat laid on top of me and I slept through my alarm and woke just before 8am 🙀
I really prefer to have some time to myself before work and alas I got none of that 😑 but I’m doing alright despite it xD
Music I’ve been into lately… below a cut cause I listed and linked a lot \o/
I’ve been working on an Ace x Reader multi chapter and have been listening to this almost on repeat:
Second to that, I LOVE this song for Crocodile x Reader stuff:
This is my favorite mood song for Eustass Kid stuff, honestly it’s a good vibe for the whole crew:
Idk why but I love this for Roronoa Zoro vibes:
I listen to music a lot, I’m really bad at remembering artist names and song titles, but give me a few notes and I’ll know if I know it xD I have mood playlists for all sort of writing assistance, but these are just some “if I had to pick a single song.” Picks

It’s day 2 of the #smarchvinylchallenge by @brandudesrecordvault: Flawless Victory: A Perfect Album. Lou Reed - The Blue Mask (RCA, 1972) Happy birthday, Lou Reed, born this day 81 years ago. Part of the fascination and charm of his solo career is that he was so willing to push his own process that is albums often have songs that don’t quite land. So finding a perfect album amongst his impressive discography is a bit of a challenge. But this one, which stunned me from first listen, is absolutely flawless. From the interplay between his and Robert Quine’s guitars to the creative rhythm section of Doane Perry and Fernando Saunders to the lyrics, which are poetic, funny, dark, and heartfelt. Reed conjures the ghost of his mentor, Delmore Schwartz, elegiacally describes the day John Kennedy died, enters the mind of a killer, and more. What a masterpiece! #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #marchvinylchallenge #records #smarch https://www.instagram.com/p/CpTsu9YryRw/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Quine's Story
Trigger Warnings: blood, body horror, gore(?), guns, slight possession, religious language (for a nonreal religion), and you know what probably codependency with Quine and Mercury
'+'
The last thing they remembered was the bombs going off.
Well, scratch that. They remembered Mercury's parents running around the house, Neptune being snatched from their grip and the bedroom door slamming shut.
They remembered the foot-soldiers kicking in the door. There was nowhere to hide. They were dragged out to the living room and shot, three bullets lodged in their chest.
Then they remembered seeing Mercury's horrified face under the couch, and their vision faded.
That was it…
Until, of course, Quine opened their eyes.
Immediately their eyes were drawn to the vast void around them, twinkling with stars and ever-shifting shadows. The ground beneath their feet was lush with foliage, plants blowing in some unfelt breeze.
They looked at their hands, noticing the slight transparency of their form. The bullet wounds on their chest were healed miraculously, and no violet blood stained their clothes.
"Hello, little one." A booming whisper drew their attention, head snapping up in an instant. Quine's mouth fell open, and as soon as they processed who was in front of them, they knelt at Her feet.
The Ruler of the Star Kingdom laughed heartily. "No, my child. There is no need to bow. Come and greet me as a friend, Quine."
Following Her orders, Quine stood to their feet. The Ruler was a magnificent being, towering high above their head. Her skin was coal-black and spotless, the only blemishes being the white freckles dotting Her face. She wore long, white robes made out of pure light, and Her cloak shone with a trillion galaxies. Her hair was white as well, and it moved gracefully as if underwater. Her eyes were a brilliant violet, almost blindingly so, but Quine could not bring themself to look away.
Although The Ruler had no mouth, Her every word was clear as a bell.
"Welcome to Loscheda, Quine. I'm sorry you had to be here so soon. You had a long, wonderful life ahead of you." The Ruler traced a long, sharp finger down the side of Quine's face, tucking their hair behind their ear. At Her touch, Quine felt something inside of them stir.
"Mercury.." They whispered, eyes never leaving Hers. "Where's Mercury?"
The Ruler closed Her eyes and sighed, bringing Her hand away from Quine. "I'm afraid he will not be joining us today."
Instantly, Quine was overcome with fear. What had she done to not be allowed in Loscheda? Where were they? Was he safe?
"Relax, my dear." Her voice quelled their worries. "Your companion is alright. There are many trials ahead of her, but you may rest easy knowing they will be loved and cared for very soon."
"Mercury made it..?" They breathed out a laugh, hand coming up to their mouth. "Of course he did. That little lucky idiot made it out alive."
Quine got the impression that The Ruler was smiling. "Come now, little one. Let's join the others in song and dance, for you are finally home!"
They opened their mouth to agree…
"Quinnie… Quine. Quine, can you hear me?"
Mercury's voice. They felt phantom sensations of four-fingered, shaking hands.
"Merc..?" Quine's voice trembled, their hands coming up to hold him. They weren't there.
The Ruler tilted Her head curiously. "What's going on, child?"
Mercury's voice was muddled and Quine couldn't hear exact words but they felt their fear all the same.
"Mercury, darling, I'm right here!" Quine closed their eyes, reaching out for her. "It's okay, shanatua, I'm right here. I can hear you."
"Quine, what are you hearing?" She asked.
"Mercury's talking to me. I can hear him! Where are they?!"
The Ruler placed a gentle hand on their head. "Your body isn't at rest yet, little one. Some part of you still lingers."
Quine was beginning to become frantic. "Where's my Mercury?! H-how do I respond to her?! Mercury! Mercury, can you hear me?!"
"Quine, I'm scared. I don't know what to do. Loscheda help me, I'm lost. Where do I go? My home is a wasteland now. My people are dead. Our people are dead."
"I know this honey, and I'm sorry. I'm sorry I can't be there with you. Be strong, Mercury, don't give up, be the little stubborn bastard I fell in love with and live to spite them, please-"
"I don't know what to do. I-i'm sorry. I can't do this alone, Quine, you said we would get out of here together."
"It's okay, you're okay, my love. I thought we would have more time, we all did, we were so close darling-"
"Quine, you promised! You said we would get Neptune and Shad'r and find our own home, you said! But they left me! And you left me!"
Tears began to track steadily down Quine's cheeks. The phantom hands were clutching them as if trying to unscrew their head. It was rough, it was grounding, but it wasn't Mercury.
Quine had promised. They'd taken Mercury's trembling hands into their own and looked them dead in those gorgeous golden eyes and promised over and over again until they both were convinced they'd be okay but Quine had lied. Quine lied to Mercury and he was paying for it.
A part of them still lingered…
They turned heel and ran, ignoring Her voice as they tried navigating Loscheda. If they could find the way out, they could be with Mercury again. She wouldn't have to be alone, he wouldn't have been lied to, they could do this together.
"What's the point of being here if I'm not with you! Beinasku! Beinasku!"
"Stay with me Mercy, please!" They cried out, searching through the endless void for an exit.
Quine pushed themself harder, breaths coming in labored as oxygen came short.
"I'm almost.. there! Please.. stay!" Desperate for solutions, Quine reached out a blind hand to try and feel for something, anything.
"I need to go. I pray the Stars guide you safely to Loscheda, Quine. Beinasku."
Quine felt a hand over their eyes, and suddenly Loscheda looked brighter. The phantom hands moved towards their neck and slowly undid their tie.
"No! I want out of Loscheda Merc, that's my whole problem!" They grasped for Mercury's hands, to try and keep her there, but his hand pulled away. A single, soft trill graced their ears before Quine was bathed in silence.
"Mercury!" They shrieked, falling to their knees. Quine began sobbing, curling up on the ground. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry."
How long they had laid there for was unclear, but soon they felt a large hand on their side. Quine sniffled weakly and looked up.
"Hello, dear." The Ruler murmured, stroking their back comfortingly. "I have to admit, that was very brave of you. Nobody's ever sought to find a way out before." She chuckled, taking Quine into Her arms. "I'm impressed."
Quine curled into The Ruler, clutching pathetically at Her robes as tears cascaded down their face. The Ruler simply held them there, stroking their back like one would with a baby.
"There there, my child. Everything will be okay."
Quine found their voice again. "N-no it won't! My darling is down there all by herself, someone needs to take care of him! He- he's never been okay with being alone, I-"
The Ruler shushed them, scratching their scalp. "I know, Quine. They will have care in time. I can promise you that."
Quine screamed. "IN TIME ISN'T SOON ENOUGH! Let me go back there and help them, I made a promise and I'm not going to give it up! Do whatever you want to me- break me, twist me into an unrecognizable shape, curse me with every illness and shatter my soul like glass but don't hurt my Mercury!"
She sighed deeply, setting Quine back down on the ground. The Grea'esi stood as tall as they could and puffed out their chest, tail stood alert behind them.
"You're very stubborn, you know." The Ruler knelt down in front of Quine, a look of confusion crossing onto their face. "But I will not hurt you. I care for you too much to bring a single tear to your eye. I made you perfectly as you are my dear, and it brings me great sorrow to see you so upset." She wiped the tears off of Quine's face, Her long fingers buzzing with divine energy against their skin.
"So," She began, sparking hope in Quine. "I give you a choice. Listen carefully, Quine. I will only say this once."
They nodded aggressively, staring up at Her eagerly.
"You may stay here with your kin for all of eternity, being able to reunite with your love when his time comes," Quine would've scoffed if they hadn't been paying such close attention. "Or you may return to your body and search for her.."
They opened their mouth, but She closed it with Her finger.
"..but you will be in pain. You will suffer. You will not die until Mercury does, cursed to unending torture should you die before their time. And, of course, this decision comes with a price."
"What's the price?" They demanded. "Whatever it is, I'll give it."
The Ruler chuckled. "Such a spirit in you, my dear. If you should choose to remain in your flesh, you will be my champion. My vessel. A God cannot exist without a worshiper."
Once again, when Quine went to accept Her offer, they were silenced.
"You must understand what this entails for you. You will be imbued with a fraction of my power. It is not as cool as it sounds, believe me Quine. It is a burden. Your form is not suited for me. You will be in pain much of the time. Your emotions will run rampant. You will be exhausted and fatigued some of the time and crackling with divine energy the rest. Your appearance will be different from one day to the next. You'll have knowledge you have no way of knowing." She concluded, giving Quine a moment to think.
"What is your choice, my child?"
Quine paused, gathering up what courage they had left. Steeling their face, they spoke, "Merc has sacrificed so much for me. For our future. It's about time I got my head out of my ass and did the same. I'll be your vessel."
The Ruler's eyes crinkled up in a smile. "You really are something unique, Quine."
"I do try, ma'am." They quipped, doing their best to try and calm their nerves. Truth be told, Quine was scared out of their mind. A God inside them? It was unthinkable. It was impossible.
Yet it was going to happen now.
She leaned forward and pressed a delicate kiss to Quine's forehead. They gasped as that buzzing sensation not only returned but increased tenfold with each passing second.
It felt like hot magma was poured into their body. Each and every single one of their cells was vibrating and bursting with divine power, traversing through their veins and burning through their heart.
They fell to their knees screaming as horrid visions filled their mind. Quine saw everything that had ever been and nothing that ever was and so much of so little and inside the outside universe and stars, it burned.
Quine felt their body dying and reviving itself in an endless cycle, felt their skin cracking and bleeding violet and gold and silver until color didn't make sense anymore and their eardrums popped and their spine bent backwards and their skin was too tight and too loose and everything ached and hurt and the only thing keeping them above water was thinking about Mercury and how he wouldn't have to be alone anymore because finally Quine could do what they were made to do and save them from a fate worse than death and Quine would endure this torture a thousand times over for her for her for her-
Quine gasped.
Their chest felt sticky, violet with blood. They blinked a few times, staring at the ceiling above them. It was quiet. Almost too quiet.
Looking around themself, Quine realized they were back on Arieala. In Mercury's home.
M̶̺͕̯̰͊̂̚ͅͅͅȇ̷̲͇̮̉̐̐̏̽́̈̈̄r̷̜͕̈́́̃͗͆͗͝c̴̢̗̞̩̬̘̿ư̵̢̰͈̘̠̝̈̏̅͐̌͋̓ͅr̶̨̧̞̟͈̝͇̥͙̽͋͑̃̓̌̈́͜y̷̨̤͓̭̰̹̝̽̉͗̏̎́̏̑.
They sat up, wincing at the ache of their chest. The bullet wounds seemed to have closed up, most likely due to The Ruler's influence. And She was right, of course. Quine hurt badly.
Taking a few deep breaths, Quine hauled themself to their feet. Immediately they were hit with vertigo, stumbling forward and catching themself on the couch.
They noticed a piece of red fabric on the floor, and recognized it as a bowtie.
Right, they thought, Mercury took my tie. This must be theirs.
Quine bent down carefully and grabbed the tie, flipping it over to see the initials M.L. inscribed on it. They brought the tie to their mouth and kissed it, inhaling her scent deeply. Quine purred at the sensation.
They tied the bowtie around their wrist and hobbled out of the house. The chemical stench of warfare choked them, and they coughed as soon as it hit their nose.
"Mercury had to survive in this..?" They asked the air, feeling a deep sorrow in their chest. Tears filled their eyes, and that confused them. Normally they wouldn't have cried over such a simple observation but-
Remember what I said, my child.
The sudden rush of energy Quine got from the statement had them stumbling back.
"Ruler?"
Yes, Quine. Here, I'll talk a bit quieter so you can get used to my presence.
Quine still felt abuzz with power, and elected to begin their search. Their feet left the scorched terrain and they floated in a random direction.
They noticed droplets of purple blood, shaped suspiciously like footprints.
M̸̝͍͚̺̟͓̅̀̐͗͜ę̸̖̙̦͍̈́̑̂̔́̈́̕r̴̨̠͔̫̪̿̐̎̉͝c̶͇̎̃͒ỷ̷̡̰͙͛.̴̦̙̩̋́́͘.̵̩̣̈́̆.̵̝̜̮̮͎̪͍̘̅̃
Relax, Quine. Keep searching. They have not died.
"Well, can't you tell me where he is?" They huffed, beginning to follow the footprints.
Unfortunately I cannot, Quine. You are my last bastion of power in this world, and I can't reach her anymore. But I do know he is okay.
They sighed, but accepted it. With all of Her subjects in Loscheda, She didn't have as much power as She usually did.
Quine traversed a great distance, but still there was no sign of their beloved. They ignored their aches and pains in favor of focusing solely on finding Mercury.
'+'
It was official. Mercury was nowhere on Arieala. Quine had checked and double checked everywhere, and left notes telling them to stay there so he could be found.
Nothing.
Rue, as The Ruler had requested to be called, had no ideas either. As the foremost of Quine's newly divine energy wore off, they could only communicate to Rue through prayer and meditation.
Quine was angry. Those heathens stole their Mercury, they were sure of it. And Rue couldn't even argue. They must've been back when Quine wasn't looking.
They would find those army fucks and show them what a Star's power felt like.
But first, they needed a way off Arieala.
Thankfully, they didn't have to wait long as the first scavenger ships touched down, looking for any valuable resources.
Quine crouched behind a tree stump, watching the ship's crew moving around. Their tail flicked eagerly as they waited for their chance.
Their backs were turned. Now.
They ran towards the ship, almost reaching the cargo hold before someone shouted. It was in the barbarian tongue, because of course it was. They felt disgust flare up inside of them.
Someone restrained them easily, and Quine would've escaped were it not for the tranquilizer injected into their neck. But they sure put up a good fight.

Quine woke up inside the ship, on the floor. There was a person standing close by, using some sort of rectangular device. They quickly noticed Quine was awake and shouted for the rest of their crew.
The thrum of the engine gave away the fact they were flying through space. Quine scowled, as that would give up their means of escape. Not even they could survive in the vacuum of the void.
They breathed deeply, Rue's divine energy swirling in their chest. Quine would be able to survive this encounter. Although, wincing as their bullet wounds were aggravated, not without a lot of pain.
There was a human kneeling in front of them. Good, they thought with a sneer, they should be kneeling to Quine. After what they did it was a mercy they weren't struck down where they stood.
The human was babbling in that awful language, slowly and carefully as if talking to an infant. Mercury would have been better than Quine at this, she was always far more talented at Human than they were.
Instead of dignifying them with a response, Quine snarled at them, gnashing their blunt teeth together. The human flinched back, sending a shiver of pride up their spine.
Another one had a gun trained on Quine, but they didn't look like they would shoot. Their finger was slack on the trigger, as if it knew what Quine was capable of.
A human leaned down to the first one and muttered something. Quine caught the word "animal" and bristled. They didn't get to come to their home, slaughter their people and then call them animals.
Quine stood up sharply, sending the humans backwards. The Gun kept it's finger steady on the trigger.
"I am not a Stars-damned animal." Quine did their best to enunciate that horrible human word, which shocked the crew.
One of the beasts patted the Gun on the arm and told it something. It lowered the Gun suspiciously, and then put it back in a holster.
The human put their five-fingered hands up and slowly crept closer. Quine tensed, moving backwards.
"Not animal?" The human asked. Quine was offended, yet grateful, they used such simple words.
"Not animal." They growled. "Alive."
One of the other humans muttered, "It knows English?" but was silenced with a glare.
"It?" Quine seethed. "Not it."
"Not it." The closer human affirmed. "Alive."
Quine found themself nodding, relieved. They hated humans more than anything, but could this one not be so bad if they were willing to acknowledge Quine's sentience?
"Name?" They asked. Quine thought about how to say their name in Human- er, English, apparently.
"My name.. is.. Quine." They vaguely remembered human lessons back at school, the ones they'd only taken to have a shared class with Mercury. They were so damn thankful for that class right about now.
"Keen?" Gun questioned, face scrunched up with laughter.
"No, it's Quine, idiot." Another human replied. Quine smirked- they remembered that word.
"Idiot." They repeated, earning laughter from the crew.
"Why are you here, Quine?" Closer asked. The way the human said their name was funny.
"Look.. my.. Mer-cur-y." Quine hated how stupid they felt speaking English. Why can't they just say they were looking for Mercury, the light of their life and the only thing keeping them going?
"You're going to Mercury?" Gun sounded confused, but Quine had prepared for this.
"Haha, hey Merc!" Quine giggled, shoving a book onto Mercury's desk. Mercury sighed and looked at Quine.
"What, Quinnie?" As Quine pointed at the book, Mercury cracked a smile.
"One of Sun's planets is named after you! Mercury!"
"Not.. plan-net," they said, "Person. Mer-cur-y."
"I think she's looking for a person named Mercury." One of the others commented. They couldn't understand a few of the words, but got the impression the human understood.
"Hey, King, we don't know what Quine's pronouns are." Closer remarked. The human called 'King' looked sheepish.
"Ah, right." Quine didn't know what 'pronouns' were, and it set them on edge. Was it some sort of weapon? A disease? Did Quine have pronouns?
Closer looked back at Quine, baring their teeth at them. Quine almost reacted before remembering "smiling" was a thing.
"My name is Auburn, I'm the captain of this ship." They introduced themself, Quine not understanding the last half of the sentence.
"Cap..tin?" Quine repeated in question. They knew what a ship was, of course they did, but not what a "captain" was.
"I do many things here. I drive the ship. I tell people what to do." Auburn explained simply, still smiling at Quine.
Ah, a captain was the person in charge of everything.
Quine nodded, satisfied with the answer. As the conversation went on, they felt themself becoming more and more fatigued, the strain of non stop movement finally taking its toll on their body.
"You can stay here if you want, kid," Gun said. Quine blinked, apparently having missed part of the conversation. They took a moment to translate the sentence in their head before hesitantly nodding. They didn't trust this group, not one bit, but they had no other option.
"Awesome!" One of the others exclaimed. Quine remembered that word to be a display of happiness or awe. "My name is Elijah, it's nice to have you on board, Quine."
Elijah reached out and took them by the arm, startling Quine. The human paused, their face scrunching up. "Are you okay? You're.. buzzing."
Quine blinked, not understanding. They nodded anyway.
Seemingly satisfied with their response, Elijah led Quine further into the ship. It looked.. well it looked gray, the sleek metal walls not exactly as inviting as the crew wanted.
"Sorry about Kennedy, by the way. We didn't know if you were going to hurt us." Elijah continued, turning into another corridor. Kennedy must be the human with the gun. "She wouldn't hurt a fly, though. She might be a gun-wielding badass but she's just a little softie on the inside."
Quine struggled to try and translate everything, simply making a confused noise. Elijah seemed to realize their mistake.
"Oh, right. Sorry." They apologized, their face turning a bit pink with embarrassment. "You can't understand English."
"Not well." Quine agreed, starting to just want Elijah to let go of their arm.
"Don't worry about that, Quine. We'll teach you."
The human smiled warmly at them, finally stopping in front of a door. "This is your bedroom for now. It's not much, but we didn't know you would be staying."
Quine nodded, filling in the blanks with context. Their head was starting to hurt.
"In the morning you could meet the rest of the crew, but you looked tired." Elijah entered a passcode and the door slid open, revealing a nice, homey room. The walls were a cream color, with a dark carpet lining the floor and a bed in the far corner.
Quine turned to look at Elijah, pointing at the inside. "Stay here?"
Elijah smiled. "Yeah, you stay here."
They nodded, cautiously and slowly entering the room. Nothing seemed off, but there could be traps. Humans were very crafty creatures after all. Quine gave the room a thorough inspection but no traps or weapons were found.
Eventually they deemed the room safe, and turned back towards the door. Elijah was still standing there, watching them curiously.
"You okay?" They asked, leaning against the doorframe.
"Yes," Quine said, nodding again. "Goodbye, Elijah."
The human cracked a smile, waving. "G'night, Quine! See you in the morning." Elijah left their spot and walked away, closing the door behind them as they went.
Nervousness coiled in Quine's gut, and they weren't sure what to do. Did they take advantage of the crew's hospitality or did they leave the first chance they got? Did they get the crew to help them find Mercury, or did they do it alone?
One thing was for certain, they needed to contact Rue.

Quine ended up staying with the crew of five humans aboard La Buscadora. At first they were wary of the crew, still fearful of what happened back home, but that quiet terror soon turned into a reluctant fondness.
Auburn Cabrera was the Captain and proud owner of the starship. She was a bit rough around the edges, but Quine liked her a lot. She had a steady aim, a biting voice, and a great love for her crew.
Elijah Kinsley was Captain Cabrera's second in command. He was bright and cheerful, but with a knack for getting into things he shouldn't. His lithe hands were made for pickpocketing and although he was small in stature he more than made up for it with his skill and ingenuity.
Kennedy Henderson was La Buscadora's sharpshooter. They were deadly, well versed in any sort of firearm given to them. Although quiet, their voice carried a distinct authority when paired with their obvious skill. But they were kind, often staying up late with Quine to teach them English.
Oliver "King" Bowman was the ship's medic. He was a loudmouth and rarely shied away from the truth. As much as he enjoyed helping and healing, they had a mean right-hook and they weren't afraid to cause serious pain if he needed to. Quine often went to them when their body ached so badly they could barely walk, and he would sit them down and stay with them as they rode out the worst of the pain. He was the one who gave Quine their hearing aids, since the explosions had damaged their ears in ways not even Rue could totally fix.
Last, but certainly not least, was Finnegan Socks. A suave smooth-talker to clients but a bumbling idiot to the crew, Finn was the businessman. He had contacts in almost every place they visited, and always knew just what to say. He'd saved their asses far too many times to count, and was often hailed as La Buscadora's good luck charm. Finn was clumsy, charismatic, and high on wisdom but low on intelligence.
And Quine Histledon-Lurks fit right in. They were brash and hot-headed one moment and quiet and serene the next. They had become the wild card of the crew, a sort of jack-of-all-trades. Quine learned to steal, to shoot, to get down and dirty, and much more.
The room they'd be given as a temporary stay had been formally assigned to them as they signed the papers saying Quine was now part of La Buscadora. Of course the papers weren't legal, nothing they did ever really was, but it did help Quine to feel more welcome.
Currently Quine was meditating in their room. They'd hung up their own decorations in the time they'd stayed here, and it really felt like home. Well, almost. It wouldn't be home until Mercury was here with them.
They frowned, shaking their head. Quine needed to be focused in order to properly commune with Rue, they couldn't be distracted by anything.
Greetings, my chi-
The door burst open, startling Quine out of their meditative state. Elijah held up a piece of paper excitedly.
"We've got a job to do, Quine!" He grinned, slapping the paper down in front of them. They picked it up and began looking it over. "A little supply run, just us! No bodyguards, no escorts, no secret assassins! Just La Buscadora's amazing crew!"
A wide grin overtook their face. "Well what are we waiting for, Blondie?! Let's go fucking steal shit!" They jumped up off the ground, pushing Elijah out of the room. "Go get changed you lazy sack of shit, you better not wear a cat onesie to a fuckin' mission."
Elijah stuck his tongue out and flicked up both of the onesie's ears with his fingers. "You just can't handle my cat-tastic meow-tfit."
Pressing the button to close the door, Quine shooed him away. "I will actually strangle you, Kinsley. Don't make me do it."
Elijah yelled something through the closed door, but Quine simply turned their hearing aids down.
Once they got dressed, Quine made their way down to La Buscadora's kitchen, otherwise known as the ship's official meeting place. It was cramped in there with all six members of the crew (and Entropy, the ship's cat).
Auburn slid the now wrinkled piece of paper across the table, grinning mischievously. Everyone leaned in close to see.
"Now mi amigos, I'm sure you've all seen this notice. Elijah wouldn't shut his ass up about it." Auburn gave a half-hearted glare to him, but Elijah paid it no mind. "But I've got a bit of information that Kinsley neglected to tell you."
"What, are we gonna blow some facility up again, Cap? No offense, but we get those all the time and I'm so goddamn bored." King huffed, a bit annoyed by the idea of another explosion job.
"If you would shut your trap and listen to me estúpido, you'd know we're actually going to a nice little jungle planet t-"
Groans all around.
"Auby, why are we going to the jungle? I hate the jungle. We all hate the jungle!" Finn complained, rousing agreement from the rest of the crew.
Auburn smirked and flipped over the paper. She leaned back in her chair and watched the rest of the crew gape.
"50,000 eddies..?" Kennedy whispered, astonished. "What's the catch?"
"Catch is that it's in the jungle. Nobody likes going to the jungle." Auburn scoffed, picking the piece of paper back up.
"Well then what are we waiting for?!" King exclaimed, slapping their hands on the table. "50,000 eddies await us!"
"We're waiting until we get there, dipshit," Auburn said. "And get your damn hands off my table, it's mahogany."
King muttered an apology and took his damn hands off her table.
"Gracias. Now, if you hooligans would let me speak, I'd love to go over the nitty-gritty details of this little fetch quest." Auburn tapped the table twice, and the screen embedded in the table lit up, displaying a map. Quine reached out to touch it, but Kennedy slapped their hands out of the way.
Auburn pointed at a small clearing in the jungle, the coordinates popping up on the screen. "That's where we're gonna land," as she spoke, a little La Buscadora appeared on the screen, landing in the exact spot. "and we'll follow a path through the jungle to find a damaged cargo ship here," a dotted line trekked through the jungle, eventually stopping at a place in the middle of nowhere. "Our client has asked us to retrieve any intact cargo from it. It was shot down by a civilization not far from there, which is why el pequeño cobarde hired us to do the dangerous work."
Not fazed by the seemingly suicidal quest they'd been put on, Auburn gave the rest of the crew a smug look. "That just proves we're the best in the business, compañeros."
"Hell yeah we are, Cap!" Elijah cheered, soon joined in by the others.
Auburn chuckled at the display, waving her hand in dismissal. "Settle down, mi amigos. I'm not done yet."
Once the crew was sufficiently calm, Auburn continued. "You know, if a couple pieces of equipment just so happened to break while we were there, I'm sure the client wouldn't know the difference. It was a rough landing, after all."
Finn cackled, grinning madly. "I love where your head's at, Auby! What's the cargo?"
Auburn zoomed in on where the downed ship was, letting the information popping up on the screen speak for itself.
Finn's eyes went comically wide. "Holy balls.."
"I see why the client's paying 50 grand for us to get that." King spoke, his eyes also widened.
Quine slapped Finn squarely between his- a quick glance at her shirt for her pin- her shoulders, grinning. "Bet you're gonna have fun with those parts, aren't ya Socks?"
"Says there that there's also a couple crates of weapon parts." Kennedy remarked with a small smile.
"I'm glad you're excited for this job my friends, but we can't take much. If too little survived the crash, our little cliente may get suspicious of us," Auburn explained, "We don't exactly have the cleanest reputation either, so one wrong move may send us all to prison." She surveyed the crew, a keen eye sweeping over them. "You know the plan should that happen, si?"
When the crew nodded resolutely, Auburn smiled. "Muy bien. Just remember that we're to treat this as any other retrieval, understood? Until we return, this cargo has no value." She winked, turning the screen off. "Go get ready. Finn, I expect you not to wear bunny slippers to la jungla." Auburn pointed at Finn's pink bunny slipper clad feet. Finn rolled her eyes, standing up from her chair and saluting.
"Aye aye, Captain. I won't let you down." She marched away back to her room to go change out of her pajamas.
Auburn snickered. "Quine, Elijah. Good to see you're prepared."
"Oi, I'm dressed!" King snarked back, crossing their arms.
"Uh huh, and where's your shirt at?" Quine pointed out. King was very clearly still in his pajamas, the only non-pajama item of clothing being the holster strapped to their hips.
"Piss off, blueberry. Don't you got ankles to bite or something?"
Quine kicked him in the shin. "Cállate antes de que te patee el trasero."
Auburn nodded approvingly. "¡Esa es mi chica!"
King gasped in offense. "You're ganging up on me! I'll have you know I graduated top of my class!"
"You sure don't act like it, King." Elijah remarked, sneering at them. Kennedy barked out a laugh.
"Alright, alright, that's enough you two. Kennedy, King, go get ready. Elijah, go get supplies ready, we might be there a bit." Auburn turned to the cat perched on the kitchen counter, watching the conversation. "Entropy, be a good kitty. Quine, I want to talk to you for a moment."
Quine blinked in surprise, but remained in their seat. The others quickly left the room to do their assigned tasks, leaving just the two of them alone.
"Those idiots.." Auburn sighed fondly, shaking her head before focusing on Quine. "You alright, hija?"
They gave the Captain a small smile. "I'm doing okay, mamá. I haven't overexerted myself, I should be okay for a job." Still seeing Auburn was worried, Quine continued. "I got clearance from King, too. I've been resting as much as I can, and I will after this job, okay?"
Auburn sighed, seemingly placated. "If you say so, Quine. But you tell me if you're in any pain, that's an order."
Knowing they wouldn't be able to convince her otherwise, Quine nodded in agreement. "Yes, ma'am."
Smiling, Auburn dismissed them with a flick of her hand. "Go and see if Elijah needs any help. Te amo, hija."
Quine stood up, walking away from the table to go find Elijah. They called out, "¡Yo también te amo!" as they left.
'+'
Auburn clapped loudly, gaining the crew's attention.
"Alright gang, we're here for a lost cargo ship a couple miles down South. No goofing off," A pointed look at Elijah and Finn, "Keep a map on you, and if you lose it make sure you have a method of communication," Another look, directed at King, "If you come across a native of this planet, do not engage," A look at Kennedy, "and please, for the love of God tell me if you start randomly bleeding from any orifice in your body." A final look, this time directed at Quine. Which, honestly, was deserved.
When nobody had anything else to say, Auburn nodded. "¡Vamos, mi amigos! Riches await!" She turned and began the hike through the jungle, her crew following loyally behind.
"Oh, god, I hate the jungle." Finn whined, brushing another vine out of her face. "This shit blows ass."
Kennedy, holding their gun in case of danger, elbowed Finn. "We're all miserable here, shut your mouth."
Laughing at their struggle, Quine phased through the thick foliage, walking as if it were a flat plane. King scoffed, fanning himself with their map. "Don't act so high and mighty, Q. Just because you're used to hot temperatures and can walk through shit doesn't mean you're better than us."
"Actually, I do think it does." Quine gave him a smug smile, walking through a tree.
"You know you'll just hurt yourself if you do that the whole time, right hija?" Auburn piped up, looking back at them. "Take a break and keep yourself energized. We might run into trouble when we get there."
Grumbling, Quine began to trudge through the jungle like everybody else, getting themself laughed at by Elijah and King.
"Come on Quine, even Entropy is doing better than you!" Elijah snickered, Entropy strapped to his chest via one of those baby carriers. She looked very disgruntled, and meowed defeatedly.
Quine gave her a sympathy scratch on the head, her tail flicking in thanks. They repeated the gesture.
"Are we there yet?" Finn complained, crossing her arms. Auburn let out a groan.
"I swear to God, if you say that one more time, Finnegan Socks I will take out my gun and blow a hole right between your eyes," She said, pulling out her gun for emphasis. Finn didn't seem bothered.
"Fine, fine.." She grumbled, falling back into silence.
Soon enough, with minimal complaining (which isn't saying much), they reached the fallen cargo ship. It was busted to hell- half burnt to ash and pieces of metal littering the ground. It certainly looked as decrepit as described, having been there for months unmanned.
King found a way in almost immediately, and so they ventured inside the cargo hold. A lot of the crates were damaged, but some were salvageable.
Quine left the others to keep searching the cargo ship. They tried to use as many holes as they could, but sometimes they did have to phase through walls in order to get places.
Eventually, though, Quine found themself in the cockpit. They shined their flashlight around the room, seeing a few corpses laid on the floor. They scrunched up their nose and kicked them away, searching the room more thoroughly.
Sat up against a wall was a half-broken tablet. Quine picked it up and pressed the power button, finding it still had a 72% charge. It was password protected of course, but that could be easily changed.
They put the tablet inside their inner jacket pocket as their walkie-talkie crackled to life.
"This is Captain Cabrera paging Histledon, come in Histledon, over."
Quine picked up the walkie-talkie and held down the button, speaking into it. "This is Histledon, Captain Cabrera, over."
"Why are you two idiots talking like that over walkie-talkies? We all know each other." King's voice came through the walkie-talkie, sounding annoyed.
"Bowman, please shut up, over," Auburn said.
"Yeah, yeah, fine. Enjoy your little LARP."
Auburn sighed, "Quine, we're ready to leave. We've got the stuff, over."
"I'll be there in a minute, over and out." Quine clicked off the walkie-talkie, putting it back in its holster. They pat the broken tablet in their pocket.
Quine really hoped something on there would be useful.
'+'
Finn turned the tablet over in- Quine glanced at the pin- their hands, inspecting it and making a couple "hmm"s and "huh"s as they went.
"Yeah, it's a standard issue communication tablet. Nothing really remarkable about it." They powered it on, tapping at the screen. "It's locked, obviously. Most likely by fingerprint or facial recognition software. But this model has a convenient little bug in it, where if you pressed and held the power button long enough…" They paused, holding down the power button. "Then it would briefly bypass the lock!" Finn swiped up on the screen, and the tablet was open. They handed it to Quine, smiling. "Just make sure it doesn't go into sleep mode, or you'll have to get me to unlock it."
Finn stood up and stretched, leaving Quine to sit on their bed. "I'm gonna go see about those engine parts now, have fun with your tablet."
Quine waved goodbye as Finn exited their room, door clicking shut behind them.
Turning their attention to the screen, they found it was some sort of news article. A quick skim told Quine all they needed to know about it. It was some sort of hit and run car crash. Boring.
Nevertheless, they clicked on the video at the top of the screen just for shits and giggles.
"Hello and good afternoon, this is Shandra with TNBL 4. I'm here reporting live at the scene of a two car hit-and-run crash. The victim is at the hospital in critical condition, and the perpetrator has not been apprehended. If anybody sees a red Nissan Pathfinder with a yellow bee bumper sticker, please contact this number."
The video cuts to an interview with an elderly man, standing outside a Taco Bell.
Quine noted the red terrain around the scene. It looked similar to how Arieala looked when they first got revived.
"I was walking out from Target, I was. I was getting flowers for my wife, we've been married 57 years now." The interviewer aww'ed. "Thank you. But then I saw this red blur hurtling down the street, and I thought, "wow, that guy's gonna kill someone!" Then I saw this little sedan leaving the parking lot, and wham! Plowed right through it, and then he had the audacity to le-"
Quine paused the video, feeling their skin prickle with energy.
There, in the background. A little smudge. A little blue smudge. It was standing outside the door of the Taco Bell, with some sort of bird on its shoulder. It was talking to someone on the phone.
They would've almost believed it was someone else if not for that hair. Those stupid two horn-like curves of that little stupidhead's hair.
M̴̢͇̮̰͚̹̝̐ͅË̷̩̤̞́̔̐̽̎͂̃̀͛̽R̴̰͚͓̲̲̦̊̌̿̈́̇̂C̶̛̹̙̼̱̲̣̫̬̑̔͗̎̎͛̕ͅU̴̪̫̘̪̎̊͗͂̊̽̓̚͝R̶̛̦̦̾̈́̊͒̽̅͠Y̴͙̲͚͉̩̻͑̐͑̈́̃͋̑͛̾.
Breath coming short, Quine pressed play again, muting the video.
Mercury was on the phone with someone, talking animatedly. She seemed concerned, but then hung up. For a brief moment, he faced the camera, and any doubts Quine may have had were washed away. The bowtie, that vest, those gorgeous golden eyes, it was her.
He floated away from the camera. That tail, it was theirs, it was theirs! Mercury was okay. Mercury was okay!
A loud purr rumbled in Quine's throat and they pressed the tablet to their face. Mercury was safe. They'd be able to find her and bring her home and show him La Buscadora and they would be wary at first but she'd grow to love it just as they had and their crew could add a new member and they'd finally get married and go on adventures together and be happy!
Something in Quine spasmed painfully, making them drop the tablet and clutch their stomach. They hissed in pain, golden tears pricking at the corners of their eyes.
Growling, they pushed themself to their feet. No painkillers would help this kind of pain, but Quine didn't have to ride it out alone.
They debated picking up the tablet, but even standing was making them nauseous, so Quine elected to leave it for now.
Hobbling out of their room, Quine made it to the kitchen. Elijah was sitting at the table, scrolling through his phone. He looked up when he heard someone come in.
"Oh, hey Qui- Quine?!" He stood up sharply, practically sprinting over to them. Elijah steadied them with his hands, worry plastered all over his face. Quine shivered at his touch, leaning into it desperately. They felt Her power crackling in their gut, eating them alive. If it had been anyone else, they would have died.
Alas, their body was cursed into a neverending state of death and revival until Mercury met his eventual fate.
"Hey, hey Q, look at me." Elijah tilted their head up, searching for something in their eyes. "Your eyes are purple, shit, okay. You're gonna be okay. You've done this before, hermosa, you'll be okay. Let's get you somewhere more comfortable."
Elijah hefted the Grea'esi into his arms, carrying them into their makeshift living room. It was just a couch with a cool rug and a flat screen TV, but it was theirs.
He set them down on the couch, pulling them close as Quine's body was wracked with tremors. Pulling out his phone, he typed a bit before sighing.
"The others will be here soon, alright?" Elijah rubbed his hand across their back. Quine felt their skin ripple where he touched them. "You're not alone, Quine."
Quine didn't know how long it had been- time felt like it was imploding- but eventually they were wrapped in strong arms, pulled into the world's greatest cuddle pile.
Auburn, their mamá, carded her fingers through their hair, singing a soft lullaby in Spanish. King placed the emergency first aid kit on the table, just for these situations. Kennedy held their hand and ran their hand up and down Quine's arm, their blunt nails tingling pleasantly on their hypersensitive skin.
Finn laid their head on Quine's shoulder, almost wrapped entirely around them. Elijah and King had a brief discussion, which was interrupted by a pained gasp from Quine.
Shimmering, violet blood leaked out of their nose and pooled out of their mouth. Elijah brought over a purple-stained bucket and held it under Quine's head, Auburn angling then so that the blood dripped down into the bucket.
Several cuts opened themselves on Quine's skin, hot to the touch as their body was destroyed from the inside out. King simply wiped them clean and stuck colorful bandages on them. If they were deep enough, King stitched them up and wrapped them in colorful gauze. After all, they had said, what was the point of injuries if you can't look like a clown for getting them?
Eventually, the storm brewing inside of Quine ebbed. They groaned, peeling themself away from Auburn just enough to vomit into the bucket.
"Are you alright, hija?" She asked, rubbing their back. Feeling dead on their feet, Quine nodded. "That's good. Do you want to be alone or do you want us to stay?"
"Stay," Quine croaked out. "I need- I-" They coughed, hacking up more violet blood.
"Try not to talk, Qi." King advised, packing up the first aid kit.
"No," they groaned, "Mercury.."
Elijah sighed, setting down the bucket. "Mercury isn't here." He looked regretful, a melancholy smile on his face. Quine shook their head.
"I found him.." They coughed, and this time nothing came back up. "The tablet.."
Finn stood up. "I'll go get it, wait here." They jogged off in the direction of Quine's room, coming back with the slightly more cracked tablet Quine had dropped.
Everyone gathered around it as Finn unlocked it.
"Rewind.." Quine muttered, eyes half-lidded with exhaustion. Finn tapped the left side of the video twice, rewinding it by ten seconds. They pressed play.
"That blue fella in the back, right?" King asked. Quine mumbled out an affirmative, leaning back against Auburn's chest.
Finn picked up the tablet, giving Quine a self-satisfied look. "Well then, I suppose I'd have to do a bit of digging into where this was filmed." They walked over to Quine, ruffling their hair. "We'll find her, I promise."
Quine smiled sleepily at them, Auburn chuckling. "Why don't you get some rest, cariño. You've had a long day."
They nodded, relaxing into their mamá's hold and falling asleep instantly.
'+'
Kennedy knocked on Quine's door. They knew it was them by the cadence of the knock, a simple one-two staccato beat on the metal door.
Quine opened their eyes, feeling a bit different. One look in the mirror revealed their appearance had once again changed, now sporting white hair and glowing white freckles. A few coal black stripes were present on their face and the tips of their fingers, almost like they had frostbite.
"Come in, Kenny!" They called, blinking away the last remnants of their meditative state. The door slid open and Kennedy walked in.
"We've got some information we think you'd wanna know," they said. Without explaining further, Kennedy turned and walked out of the room. Quine didn't hesitate to follow them into the kitchen.
Auburn gestured for Quine to take a seat. "Well, hija, we think we've found your guys."
Quine learned forward, bristling. "Yeah? You think so?"
The captain nodded, an evil smirk on her face. "Yep. Finny did a bit of digging and found out that the video was taken on Mars, in the Solar System." Auburn chuckled, drumming her fingers on the table. "And guess which military faction is in charge of that, mi amiga?"
When Quine didn't answer, Auburn continued. "The Freelancers. A bunch of unruly, violent imbéciles known for disobeying planetary guidelines and leaving untold amounts of destruction in their path." She slid a folder over, which Quine opened. It was a basic synopsis of Freelancer Incorporated.
With every sentence read, more things clicked into place. As they finished reading, Quine slammed the paper down on the table, growling.
"They thought they could get away with slaughtering my people. They thought they could kill me and steal my Mercury." Quine laughed, angry and edging on crazed. "Well not anymore! I'm going to fucking murder them for what they did to me!" Their voice twisted and echoed, dripping with divine power as their anger brought forth Rue's energy. Quine looked at their crewmates, their familia, and grinned with suddenly too-sharp teeth. "What are we waiting for? Let's get my Mercury back."
There were cheers from around the table as they pointed their weapons in the air. Auburn climbed up onto the table, holding her prized knife in the air.
"For far too long these criminals have gone unpunished for the atrocities they've committed!" Auburn spoke, leaning down to look every single one of them in the eyes. "They've murdered billions just for what? For fun? For some sick joke?!" She laughed once, wiping away a fake tear. "THAT'S NOT GONNA FLY WITH THE CREW OF LA BUSCADORA! WE'RE GONNA TAKE THE FIGHT TO THEM AND STRIKE THEM DOWN WHERE THEY STAND!"
Another round of cheers, and Auburn hopped off the table, a devious glint in her eye. "I'll set a course for Mars. We have a couple Freelancers to visit."
Quine had never wanted to see thick, red blood staining the ground as much as they did in that moment.

Hey there :) I'm going to ask you 16/17 and 19 for the storytelling game
ooohh hiii!! 🤗 thank you for the ask! hmm, let's see.
16. what about the process do you enjoy?
i really love seeing a scene come together. the finished product is pretty rewarding, especially when it's something that i wasn't too sure i would be able to pull off. so far, everything i've envisioned has worked out so that's been such a relief. but this part of the process is also what keeps me from setting up a scene/post (aka procrastinating) bc i'm always nervous that it isn't going to come together.
17. what about the process do you hate?
aw man, i hate looking for poses. well, i don't hate it, sometimes i can get lost in it and a bit carried away. sometimes i'll search for days with no luck on exactly what i'm looking for. so for a lot of my story i use as many gameplay animations that i can, but sometimes a pose just helps the story come across better. if i had the time to create poses i most certainly would. but when i DO find poses that are perfect it's like a holiday.
19. choose a song that reminds you of (insert character here)
i meant to do that OC playlist challenge that was floating around a few months ago and never got around to designing the posts. i picked the songs, so here it goes for everyone, with honorable mentions for todd and rosie from my LP rosie in the city because i had songs that were perfect for them too so i had to include them lol.
sami - outkast, funky ride
trent - dom kennedy, my type of party
todd - dom kennedy, still callin
rashad - drake, own it
lotus - niecy blues, ways
sage - quin, who am i
rosie - doja cat, rules
tanisha - ari lennox, shea butter baby

Walter Matthau and Audrey Hepburn in Charade (Stanley Donen, 1963) Cast: Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Walter Matthau, James Coburn, George Kennedy, Ned Glass, Dominique Minot, Jacques Marin. Screenplay: Peter Stone, Marc Behm. Cinematography: Charles Lang. Art direction: Jean d'Eaubonne. And it has a near-perfect supporting cast, including three actors at turning points in their careers: Walter Matthau, James Coburn, and George Kennedy. All of them would move out of television and into the movies after Charade, and all three would win Oscars for their work. And in Stanley Donen it had a director whose lightness of touch had been honed in MGM musicals, including the greatest of them all, Singin' in the Rain (1952).

The new Tegan and Sara album Hey I’m Just Like You, Out September 27. Pre-save now at TeganAndSara.lnk.to/PreSave!
Last year while writing our new memoir, we came across two cassette tapes with dozens of songs we wrote in high school. Defiant and melodramatic, the songs captured the exultation and grief of first loves, first losses, ecstatic kiss-offs, and psychedelic tributes to the friendships we had as teenagers. It had been over twenty years since we had heard the songs and quite honestly, we both expected to listen once, cringe, and bury them for another couple decades. But they were good. Like, really good. They were raw, and in some cases the lyrics were hard to decipher. But the melodies, the honesty in the words, and the joy listening to them after all these years was undeniable. We decided immediately that those songs were the demos we’d use to build the new Tegan and Sara record. Hey, I’m Just Like You has twelve songs, but in making those twelve songs we pulled sections from nearly twenty of those lost high school demos. We kept the original lyrics where we could, and we only wrote four new sections. In some cases, Sara sings songs I wrote, and in other cases I sing songs she wrote. For the first time ever, we share vocal duties on a handful of songs making them the first truly “Tegan AND Sara” songs. Alex Hope produced the record in Vancouver, where we recorded this past April and May. It is also the FIRST Tegan and Sara album produced, performed, engineered, mixed, and mastered by a team of all women.
Produced by Alex Hope Engineered by Rachael Findlen Mixed by Beatriz Artola Mastered by Emily Lazar Assistant engineering by Annie Kennedy
