Upcoming at Wailoa Center: Call to artists for “Plein Aire”
Wailoa Center and Hawaii Island Art Alliance announce the open call for artists for the second annual statewide juried exhibition “Plein Aire,” which will open Feb. 5, 2021.
This exhibit is open to residents of the state. The definition of Webster’s “plein aire” is “of or relating to painting in outdoor daylight. The quality of light and atmosphere out of doors, especially this quality as rendered in painting.” Artists who want to enter this exhibit will need to go to the callforentry.org website for more information and to submit their entries.
Richard Rochkovsky is this year’s juror and is based in Kona. Rochkovsky graduated with a bachelor of architecture with a minor in art from the University of Virginia in 1972. He has architectural works in Washington, Virginia and Hawaii.
“For me, painting furiously and intensely for three hours, trying to capture the ever-changing moods and character of a scene, is the culmination of everything that I’ve done and know — the challenge, of course, is to forget all of that and just paint — after all, it’s just light, right?” says Rochkovsky. “Many people find Hawaii to be a peaceful and restful place, while I find painting here to be loaded with energy and excitement. My paintings are filled with adjacent complementary colors and warm shadow work that reflect the vibrancy of the scene and the excitement of the moment.”
The deadline to apply for “Plein Aire” is Jan. 15, 2021. See additional details for entry by visiting callforentry.org and search “Plein Aire: 2nd Annual Hawaiʻi Statewide Jury Exhibition.”
If you need help navigating the entry process, a “HELP DAY” is scheduled for 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Jan. 6. Reservation are required. Artists needing help should call 933-0416 or email to [email protected].
