New Pakistan!
Millions of Pakistanis around the country and some even abroad made an effort to be there to exercise their right and civic duty. With few technical glitches (Election Commission tried using an app for recording final tally but as with many things in Pakistan, they didn’t anticipate the load correctly) official results are still pouring in since 24 hours after it initially started.
Few things which have made me hopeful;
Pakistan once again proved that hardline religious leaders can obviously garner street power and 9000 odd votes in constituencies but they will never get the popular vote.
All the political parties and some journalist who are calling foul play are the same who reminded everyone else in 2013 to let the democracy work, it will only make things better.
Khyber Pakhtunkawa province which borders volatile Afghanistan has a history of never voting the same party in again, but they have made first change in that trend in last 70+ years by selecting PTI again.
Establishment friendly “Jeep” has failed miserably.
Karachi has finally voted not on ethnic grounds, but then again that can be down to MQM London boycotting.
In times when you have Modi in India, Trump in USA, and people like Duterte in Philipines - you do need a leader like Imran Khan making a mark. I also sincerely hope we have a strong and vocal Opposition this time around so PTI is kept in check and on right path.
Now for a reality check. Pakistan is not magically going to become something else in next 5 years. There will be no Naya (New) Pakistan. Next five years are being given to a new political party with a record national debt and unprecedented challenges; economic and social. Most probably not all of our ideas will materialise and we will be disappointed a lot many times. However, it is remarkable to see results of this two decades of tireless effort!
Congratulations Pakistan. Democracy won, you’ve won.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa – the other side of the picture
“Gone are the days when law and order would keep the investors away from investment in particular area,” said Raziuddin, CEO of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Oil and Gas Company.
“Chinese are working in Karak, a southern district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa rich with oil and gas. Thanks to video-conference facility, Beijing and Karak are in touch and doing business,” said Mr Raziuddin while talking about the rich oil and gas prospects of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in an event held recently. Security concerns may have been hurdle to the full exploitation of the potential of the area, still 10 companies are working in Southern districts rich with oil and gas, he said.
“Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is not as dangerous as Siberia or other countries in Africa where companies are working in oil and gas fields,” he said.
While he talked of how with just 10 million dollars any one could invest in oil and gas as the KPOGC was going to help with all the formalities, some investors from Gulf already seemed to have started taking interest. (more)

Young Entrepreneur Changes the U.S. Cell Phone Market
People who overturn the apple cart don't ask for permission. But it takes more than audacity for a 26-year-old to challenge an entire industry. For Ahmed Khattak, it was personal: He couldn't buy a phone. An international student from Peshawar, Pakistan, Khattak arrived at Yale in 2004 at the age of 18 with no social security number and no credit history. That meant no one would sell him a cell phone.
He was appalled at the barriers the U.S. cell phone industry threw in front of consumers at every turn. Restrictive two-year contracts? (complete)

Ancient tombs discovered in Pakistan's Swat (AFP)
Italian archaeologists say they have discovered a cemetery that reveals complex funeral rites dating back more than 3,000 years in Pakistan's Swat valley, recently controlled by the Taliban.
The Italian mission began digging in the 1950s at Udegram, a site of Buddhist treasures in Swat, the northwestern district formerly known as the Switzerland of Pakistan for its stunning mountains, valleys and rivers.
Archaeologists were aware of a pre-Buddhist grave site in Udegram, but only recently discovered the collection of almost 30 graves, tightly clustered and partially overlapping.
"Some graves had a stone wall, others were protected by walls and enclosures in beaten clay," Luca Maria Olivieri, head of the Italian mission, told AFP.
"The cemetery... seems to have been used between the end of the second millennium BCE and the first half of the first millennium BCE," he added.
