Godzilla 3: The Planet Eater (2018)
Tumblr media
The animated Godzilla trilogy has been an interesting experiment. After the post-credit sequence in Godzilla 2: City on the Edge of Battle, we heard a familiar name whispered: Ghidorah. We've seen King Ghidorah how many times now?! Are these filmmakers afraid of taking chances? Well, the three-headed monster does come to fight the King of the Monsters once again but this is an entirely different take on the character. It’s so different I think many who come in simply craving wanton kaiju-sized destruction may leave disappointed but there’s a lot to like in the story’s exploration of theological themes and sci-fi ideas. It's the best of the three films.
Mechagodzilla City has been destroyed, causing the alien Bilusaludo to turn against their fellow survivors. In this time of weakened defenses, the humans' other allies, the Exifs, begin indoctrinating those around them in their death-cult religion, hoping to summon the "golden death", Ghidorah, to our world. To convince mankind that their god is worthy of worship, Methphies (voiced by Takahiro Sakurai) needs the help of now emotionally devastated Haruo (Mamoru Miyano).
This story put the “God” in “Godzilla”, a novel idea I’m surprised hasn’t been explored previously. We’ve had magical creatures in the long-running series and some of the monsters have been worshipped as deities (Mothra, for example) but never like this. This film directs its energies almost exclusively on inner struggles rather than monster action. The Exifs prey on the humans who, after facing yet another defeat, are looking for any way to fight back against Godzilla. Methphies goes in-depth into the logic of his race’s religion and it’s fascinating stuff. Blending alien concepts with the supernatural like this is something we don’t often see. We kinda knew they were twisted and evil early on but finally getting all of the details reveals them to be even more unsettling.
It builds to a climax that incorporates all sorts of wild concepts. It's a unique plot - not just within the Godzilla canon. In many ways, it reminds you of Evangelion; the later chapters of the series which focussed on the characters uncovering deep personal secrets and blending science and religion together to uncover a storyline which put not just the world, but all of reality in peril. It's also the only Godzilla movie I can think of which has sex in it. Who'dve thunk?
While some issues from the first two films return - the just-average animation and sometimes clunky dub, too-similar character designs - and a couple of developments are a bit unclear (perhaps due to the dub), this conclusion to the story makes it all worthwhile. Sometimes, giving the first pieces in a bigger story the benefit of the doubt pays off and Godzilla 3: The Planet Eater is one of those examples. I wasn't very familiar with Godzilla itself, but I felt that making an anime featuring Godzilla or a beautiful girl were fundamentally not that different, so it didn't matter much to me.

The Movie Maestro's Reviews: Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters (2017) dir. Hiroyuki Seshita & Kobun Shizuno A futuristic Godzilla story is one that I have been wanting to see for awhile (no, I'm not making that up--it really is a concept I looked forward to seeing for years), and Toho finally delivered with this first installment in a planned trilogy of animated films, checking off another great idea long awaited: a kaiju anime. Planet of the Monsters is not without its faults, but should please most kaiju fanatics who are eager to see what new filmmakers will do with the Big G. This film takes place in an indeterminate future, after the survivors of humanity leave the planet in a generational starship to escape the ravages of kaiju and, not one, but two alien arrivals. After 11 years of fruitless searching for a new home, the crew returns the ship to Earth with the help of an alien warp engine, to find that the planet has evolved 20,000 years in their absence, home now to radioactive plant life, monstrous animals, and of course, the still-living Godzilla. The plot then takes a turn for the simplistic, focused on the hellbent efforts of main character Haruo, a first-hand survivor of Godzilla, to kill the monster and returning the human race to its home planet. It's your basic revenge story, nothing special, but it does the job to provide the action goods. While I'm not too big of a fan of the CG-smooth character animation, the action pieces are quite thrilling, depicting Godzilla doing battle with all sorts of futuristic weaponry. There are numerous easter eggs to other Toho productions, and the ease with which they are woven into the early prologue signals to me that those nods will not be contained to the first film. All in all, while I do believe Shin Godzilla and the 2014 Monsterverse film better exemplify what can be done with the concept of the Big G, POTM is wicked good fun, sure to please any fan of the King.

I thought it was... okay! Honestly, I think a second viewing is in order for me to be able to take it all in; could win me over. Godzilla really does feel like a product of the earth, and I think the concept of him becoming the dominant organism on Earth is really interesting. Very glad to have another Godzilla film, though!

THE DEVILS REIGN: DAIKAIJU
The submission deadline has passed, but uploads are still being taken this week if you are running behind. The submission form is still active. We are very pleased with the hundreds of pieces submitted for the book and exhibition coming from HOWL towards the end of this year. We’ll be making selections over the the coming weeks. Daikaiju fans are in for a real treat!
Here’s to celebrating our new golden age of giant monsters! We salute Gareth Edwards’ evocative GODZILLA, and Jordan Vogt-Roberts triumphant KONG: SKULL ISLAND, as well as upcoming Legendary MONSTERVERSE productions GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS by Michael Dougherty and Adam Wingard’s GODZILLA VS. KONG. And of course Toho’s victorious SHIN GODZILLA by Hideaki Anno will soon be available on home video, as well as the beginning of Kobun Shizuno’s futuristic anime trilogy, GODZILLA: MONSTER PLANET.
I look forward to what will surely be vital additions to the giant monster genre.
And here you’ll find my thoughts on why Godzilla remains a powerful symbol and my detailed, two part examination of Edwards’ 2014 film, GODZILLA RENEWED.
