The Archbishop of Sri Lanka's Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Colombo resides at St. Lucia's Cathedral. The cathedral is situated on 18,240 square feet of ground in Kotahena, which is northeast of Colombo. It has its roots in a modest place of worship constructed under the Dutch period.

A statue of the Madonna and Baby Jesus known as "Our Lady of Kotahena" was presented to the parish in 1938. Every year in the month of May, a procession carries this monument through the streets of Kotahena. The cathedral is regarded as Sri Lanka's oldest and biggest parish cathedral. It is named after and devoted to the virgin and martyr saint Saint Lucy. The front is embellished with seven sculptures and supported by large Ionic columns. The cross on the concrete lantern atop the cathedral's dome may be seen silhouetted against the sky.

Person arrested with Rs 25 mn worth heroin

A person has been arrested last night (17) while in possession of heroin, stated the Police Media Spokesperson.

Reportedly, the arrest has been made in Kotahena area.

Police have seized 2.79 kg of heroin on the suspect, stated the police.

According to the police, the value of the apprehended haul of heroin is estimated to be nearly Rs 25 million.

At least 280 people were injured when multiple explosions hit three churches in Sri Lanka on Sunday as worshippers attended Easter services, officials and police said.

The blasts occurred at around 8.45 a.m. (local time) as the Easter Sunday masses were in progress, police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera said.

Police and emergency vehicles blocked the entrance to the Shangri-La Hotel in Colombo, where there’s visible damage, including shattered windows, above the main entrance where a cafe was located.

One of the blasts hit St Anthony's Church in Kochchikade of the capital, Colombo.
