Fashioning a Future in the Face of War
It has been 12 months since Russia began a brutal invasion of Ukraine, forcing millions to flee the country and devastating the local economy, including the budding Kyiv fashion scene. The war is the reason that Ukraine Fashion Week came to London this season, with three designers — Ivan Frolov, Ksenia Schnaider and Julie Paskal — presenting new fall collections on Feb. 21, the final day of shows…

Meduza's The Beet: How Ukraine’s fashion industry went to war
Hello, and welcome back to The Beet!
I’m Eilish Hart, the editor of this new email newsletter from Meduza covering Central and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. With four issues of The Beet under our belt, I’m happy to report that our subscriber base is growing steadily, so thank you! If you’re not a subscriber, it’s never too late to sign up. Some of our feature stories — like this fascinating dispatch from Gagauzia — are now available on Meduza’s website, but subscribing is the only way to make sure you never miss out.
This coming Monday marks eight months since Russian soldiers flooded into Ukraine in a full-scale invasion. Needless to say, Vladimir Putin’s blitzkrieg “operation” hasn’t gone as planned. But apparently “irrecoverable” military losses totaling some 90,000 troops aren’t enough to make him admit defeat. Instead, Russian forces continue to terrorize Ukrainian civilians, attacking residential areas of Kyiv with “kamikaze” drones and knocking out energy infrastructure across Ukraine, just in time for winter.
Nevertheless, Ukrainians remain undaunted. Even after eight months of brutal war, the vast majority favor fighting until victory. So it’s no surprise that the civilian population continues to mobilize in support of Ukraine’s defense, all while defiantly trying to go about their “normal” lives. This new normal is precisely what this week’s feature is all about. Writing for The Beet, journalist Katie Marie Davies reports on how Ukrainian designers have rallied to help the war effort, proving that fashion isn’t just a peacetime luxury.
How Ukraine’s fashion industry went to war
By Katie Marie Davies
When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Lena Yastreb’s business ground to a halt. Her brands Yastreb Jewelry and Cote Jeunot, painstakingly built over the past decade, were put on hold while she fled to Germany with her grandmothers and nephews. For four weeks, she heard nothing from her customers. Then, she started to receive orders for wedding rings.
“At first, I thought the war was the end [of everything] — but it wasn’t. People need beauty in their lives,” Yastreb told The Beet. She eventually moved back to Kyiv in the summer, and she’s been working there ever since. Yastreb has been crowdfunding to buy drones for the Ukrainian army and recently released a new collection inspired by the metal fragments of Russian artillery shells fired at Ukrainian cities. “When the fear stopped, people were left wanting to do beautiful things for the people they love. It’s not about the metal; it’s about the inner meaning,” she explained.

Designs from Lena Yastreb’s wartime collection. Inspired by shrapnel from Russian missiles, these pieces were created in metal and as NFTs, with the proceeds going to charities supporting Ukraine’s defense and reconstruction.

Over the past decade, Ukraine’s fashion scene has slowly blossomed into an up-and-coming style powerhouse. Brands such as Sleeper, Ksenia Schnaider, and Ienki Ienki have quickly built their profiles at major fashion weeks and on celebrity Instagram feeds.
Now, in the face of ongoing Russian aggression, those same designers are joining the war effort. Labels that previously crafted luxury garments are sewing balaclavas and protective vests for Ukrainian troops. Others are releasing new collections that are still gracing global catwalks — with a percentage of the proceeds being donated to help defend Ukraine.
Cynics may see this wartime fashion revival as a frivolous luxury. When Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and First Lady Olena Zelenska appeared in American Vogue in July, some were quick to criticize the politician as out-of-touch and self-indulgent. But Ukraine’s fashion brands firmly believe that life should continue despite Russia’s invasion. Many see continuing work as simply the most practical way to support Ukraine’s defense.
‘War is war, but they need to eat’
Musician and designer Nata Smirina founded her label, Hochusobitake, in her hometown of Kharkiv. When the full-scale war began in February, she fled west to Lviv, where she could organize the evacuation of her older family members. In the first weeks of the invasion, Smirina’s mother watched the fighting from her apartment block, calling each day to say her final farewells.
But as Ukrainian troops pushed back the invading soldiers, Smirina’s mother was able to rescue what was left of the brand’s stock. They donated practical items like coats to local residents, putting the rest up for sale online alongside new designs. The label’s latest offerings include boxy down vests and belted jewel-toned sweatshirt dresses. Ten percent of all the brand’s sales goes straight to organizations supporting the Ukrainian army.

HOCHUSOBITAKE
“Every Ukrainian is trying to do everything in their power to bring our victory closer,” Smirina told The Beet. “This is what I could do. We are a small brand. We can send around 30,000 hryvnias [$800] each month [to the army]. For some people, it might seem like nothing, but it’s what we can do. It’s an obligation — something unspoken.”
For labels such as Smirina’s, each garment sold supports Ukraine’s war effort in practical ways. Aside from providing military equipment and financial support, brands that continue operating also provide a stable income and a sense of normality for their employees. Women working from home, where they can sew whenever and wherever it’s safe to do so, produce many of the items being made for Ukrainian labels. Their wages are another small cog in the wartime economy.
“I wanted to support my team — all the girls who are dear to my heart,” Smirina said. “They have children. War is war, but they need to eat something.”
‘Ukraine is a very creative nation’
Ukraine’s fashion scene was never just about clothes. For companies and consumers, the industry is inexorably linked with the country’s national identity. The growing importance of Ukrainian design on the global stage has mirrored a society that increasingly saw itself as far less within Russia’s looming sphere of influence, even before the February invasion.
The arrival of publications such as Vogue Ukraine back in 2013 (a title that hit shelves long before local competitors Vogue Poland and Vogue Czechoslovakia in 2018) marked the evolution of Kyiv as a cultural hub, no longer reliant on Moscow as a regional center. As the 2010s went on, the publication’s increasingly daring editorials marked the Ukrainian fashion scene as progressive and forward-looking, particularly when compared to the predictable commercial and generally stagnating covers of Vogue Russia.
Vogue Ukraine launched a Ukrainian-language version of its website in 2017, while publications such as Marie Claire Ukraine led the media field in switching from Russian to the Ukrainian language in 2021.
Ukrainian consumers have always held local brands in high esteem. Now, the hunger to support domestic designers has never been greater. As Ukrainians are forced to cram their lives into backpacks and hunt for safety, many are looking at their clothes with new eyes — and grasping for traces of home.
Sustainable fashion brand Tuba-Duba restarted its operations in March, after weeks of sewing balaclavas for the Ukrainian army. The company continues to donate 20 percent of its profits to groups supporting Ukraine’s defense, while also hosting flash sales to raise money for specific pieces of equipment, such as thermal goggles, for Ukrainian troops.
The label says its sales have remained steady, but clients’ attitudes have changed. “When you need to run away with a single bag in the middle of the night, you don’t need a lot of dresses and suits,” said Ira Mysnyk, Tuba-Duba’s customer support manager. “You need things with value. You might need one dress, but it has to be high-quality. […] People know that we have that quality.”
“Ukraine is a very creative nation. Even in war, fashion exists whether we want it to or not. People need to wear something. We need beauty now to support us,” she added.
Tumblr media
TUBA-DUBA
Smirina has also seen an increased demand for meaningful pieces. “I’ve started to receive hundreds of messages from our customers with their stories. They tell me: ‘I took only my [Hochusobitake] hoodie [when I left]; I lived in it in the bomb shelter, it was so warm and I felt all the love within it.’ The feedback was so emotional,” she recalled.
Ukrainian designers are dedicated to creating these small pieces of home. But as the country’s economy continues to suffer under Russian violence, they also hope that their craftsmanship will also be in greater demand abroad, to keep bringing vital funds into the economy.
“All Ukrainian brands are looking for connections to the world. There is a huge economic collapse here, with all the people who have moved away,” Yastreb said. “People talk and connect through fashion. It’s an opportunity and we should use it.”

What type of jeans are in fashion for 2022?
Types of jeans are in fashion for 2022
1. Upcycled Jeans
'With women’s apparel the ascent of natural mindfulness, center around round design and supportability, the upcycled and repaired jean is an unquestionable necessity in 2022,' Harrington tells ELLE UK.
'Genius and thriftiness remains inseparable with make and Do-It-Yourself feel: upcycle deadstock denim, fix up classic Jeans and get innovative. Or on the other hand, put resources into a round plan with Ganni x Levi's, B Side Jeans, Basscoutur, Offspring of Conflict, Ksenia Schnaider or E.L.V. Denim.'
How to style them? You have two options: let the Jeans communicate everything and match back all the other things or, similar to mold star Susie Lau, example and surface conflict to your
2. Very Loose Jeans
'As our homes have turned into the new office, we're presently focusing on looser fits for solace and our ability,' Harrington makes sense of.
'A casual outline can be creased at the midriff or clamped with a belt. Settle on loose wide fits like the Work day Pro High Jeans, RAEY Additional Crease Wide Leg Jeans or Shut Shine down Delicate Stretch Jeans.'
'There has been a colossal change in our way to deal with denim since last year as we embraced a more loosened up fashion instinct,' Page concurs.
'Startling fashioners, for example, The Column, Peter Do and Loewe are excitingly utilizing denim all the more every now and again in their assortments, offering easy and loosened up 1990's shapes across Jeans, shorts and coats. I love the cool dressed-down denim vibe consisting of blurred washes, wide leg shapes and low-threw waistlines.'
How to style them? Like Jeanette Madsen, we figure you ought to go full 1990s grit with Vans kicks.
3. Light Jeans
'Simple, layerable and trans-occasional. The nonpartisan jean is normally colored or undyed and can be matched as a co-ord with matching things as a head to toe apparent look,' Harrington says. 'It's a staple piece, and a simple method for lifting your denim assortment. My top choices are from Bottega Veneta, Isabel Marant, The Line and Shut.'
'There's something super stylish about white denim - it's an extraordinary option when you really want a revival and ideal for any moderate that lean towards their denim somewhat more pared back,' Page tells ELLE UK.
'It's all in the styling here - Totême's grayish pair look ravishing joined with a straightforward naked vest, and Agolde's somewhat trimmed rendition styled with calfskin sliders can help total your "off the clock" daytime look.'
How to style them? While Harrington is correct - regular and white denim looks perfect as a head-to-toe group - we're likewise shifting focus over to Kat Collings' look which blends a couple in with more obscure prints and materials for a definitive winter-suitable outfit.
4. Straight Leg Jeans
'This go-to fit and staple in each woman's closet isn't set to go anywhere,' Harrington notes of straight leg Jeans. 'Search for new brands that pay attention to manageable and planet-accommodating washes and textures like Innocent and I AND ME.'
'From trimmed and longer-seamed styles, one thing we as a whole love about denim is its never-ending quality,' Page says of straight-leg Jeans.
'It's a commonsense ordinary closet staple and keeps on being an exemplary that can be worn for each event while offering the most extreme solace. A portion of our legends come from any semblance of Residents of Mankind, Casing, Mother and Cloth and Unresolved issues of a couple, and we are cherishing them now like never before.' Now a days jeans are also part of Indian traditional dress for ladies.
How to style them? We love the delightful way Camille Charrière rocks her extra lengthy straight leg Jeans with a matching denim coat, white vest and dark boots. You can also style them with Women kurta.
5. Erupted Jeans
'The pattern for nostalgic denim keeps on getting momentum,' Harrington tells us. 'Think low waisted 1990s flares and high-waisted 1970s boot cuts with matching tank tops. Take motivation from Charlotte Knowles' pant shapes and shop Mother's The Weekender or Wynn Hamlyn's stone wash Denim flares.'
How to style them? On account of Gucci, you can truly take erupted Jeans to a higher level. Very much like María Bernad, you can layer up your flares with dresses and stages are an unquestionable requirement.
