As an autistic monster fucker and a furry (stay with me) I feel confident in saying Laios is not a monster fucker. Laios hyperfixates on monsters like irl people hyperfixate on dinosaurs. Not once have I seen him interested in a monster sexually. He is all about fun facts and recipes.

He is, however, definitely a furry and I'd bet money he's got a fursona and a monstersona.

There's an initial one-sidedness to Kabru's initial... concerns... about Laois, and his attempts to. Well. Play 5-D mind chess. And it is pretty funny, to be fair.

Still, memes and jokes that flatten characters take off pretty regularly and become a flanderised fanon character, and the 5-D mind chess/me eating his pieces jokes do flatten both Laois and Kabru quite a lot.

1. Laois is smart. He's not socially intuitive, but I wouldn't even say his social intelligence is low - more his awareness. He takes social cues at face value and does not infer implied meanings, but once he is aware, his understanding can be pretty deep.

A lot of Kabru's social maneuvering is water off a duck's back because he just doesn't notice it, because he's busy doing his own thing, because he's just being genuine and doesn't have reason to expect that Kabru is not being genuine.

This does throw Kabru, who is sometimes... picking up something he expects to be much heavier than it is, and losing his balance as a result.

Which brings us to 2. Kabru is literally nice.

He doesn't actually want to be playing mindgames, going toe to toe with Light Yagami or whoever would not be fun for him. It would be stressful - although a kind of stressful that he understood and could cope with, that was draining and bad for him in the long run.

His expertise in social management comes from - spoilers - needing to manage his elf mum's feelings, her control and her refusal/inability to recognise his genuine feelings or anything that isn't framed in the very specific way that she wants from him, and the way that that relationship reflects the tallman/elf relationship.

This is what he's learned he needs to be.

What he wants is to solve social inequality and protect people. He shoves himself into the role of chess master in order to try to fix... everything, because he takes a lot of weight onto his own shoulders. He thinks he alone can be smart enough and socially adept enough to solve all social ills, and all bad things that happen, all bad choices that people around him make, are his personal responsibility and failure.

Laois failing to meet his expectations as a mind-game opponent is a relief. Those expectations come from pessimism.

Learning to accept who Laois really is, and to trust him, is him learning that sometimes other people are also smart and kind and know what they're doing, and even that they might know things he don't and understand the world differently than him and still be right. It's learning that he doesn't have to do everything alone, doesn't have to control everything or else the world will surely be doomed.

It's a relief. It's a good thing. He's happy about it. He's healthier for it.

Anyway this has been my ted talk or whatever. Go ahead and keep making eating his pieces while he's not looking jokes, it's pretty funny. Just don't forget about the deeper stuff, is all. OK bye 👋
