"Super Tamade On Changhua Road"
You shouldn’t play with your food, but what about when it comes to presenting it in art? Or trying to sell it on supermarket shelves? Surely there’s a bit more room for creative freedom and leniency for the juices to flow? Edible objects have appeared in artworks for centuries and the many approaches to showing flashy appetites is interesting to say the least. Imagine what sumptuous still life innovator Jan Davidsz. de Heem’s shopping list would’ve looked like when it came to creating Still Life with Ham, Lobster and Fruit. Chinese artist Zhang Huan donned a suit made of raw meat as part of his public performance My New York in 2007, which was included in the Whitney Biennial. Rirkrit Tiravanija’s own immersive style of inviting audiences in with his installations involving cooking such as Untitled (Free) in 1992 is also worth thinking about. Films, on the other hand, have had a great knack of showing food in an entertaining creative light with moving images over the years. Everyone remembers the imaginary dinner scene in Disney’s 1991 Hook classic. The meal turned into a full-on food fight with the characters throwing what looked like colorful paint at each other. What about Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory in 1971? We all wanted a golden ticket after seeing that movie. In real life in China, religious people love to leave food offerings to the gods at temples such as Longhua and nearby Jade Buddha in Shanghai but do the opposite in shops. Anything to get one over on the fellow consumer and while the first bird may well get the worm the second mouse gets the cheese so it depends on your bargaining skills. One thing that’s for sure in Asia though is that an appetite for everything showy is almost always on the menu so enjoy the entrée, just don’t overcook it.

"My-Self_My-Generation",2022;
Tumblr media
Chalk, recycled paper (old travel diaries) video;
Variable size, loop;
Tribute to: eva and franco mattes
This project started as a research on self-portrait led me to reflect not only on my person but also on the context in which we are living, our generation, the generation of posts, the generation of digital natives accustomed to this continuous dialogue with the technological world and the speed with which everything is in constant evolution and mutation.
We are the generation without the strong points of reference but able to adapt, we are post evrything: post internet, post social, post 900, post pandemic, post industrial, post organic, post human ... and now?

"Takoyaki Delicious"
**Available**
The Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife is a famous woodblock-printed design by Japanese artist Hokusai that presents a female shell diver being preyed upon by a pair of octopuses. The larger of the two feeds on the woman’s genitals as its younger offspring focuses on her mouth while caressing her left nipple. The piece has become Hokusai’s most famous shunga design – sex sells, after all – and is just one of the many representations of octopuses in Japanese art. In more recent culture, the eight-limbed sea creatures have migrated to another kind of woodblock to become the hunted on chopping boards. In 1935, street food vendor Tomekichi Endo discovered the Osakan snack takoyaki, or octopus dumplings, and the dish has been widely consumed ever since. Typically made with diced or minced octopus, tempura scraps, pickled ginger and green onion, the filling is covered by a wheat flour-based batter and cooked in a special molded pan. Sauce and mayo is then added as well as green laver for connoisseurs to chow down on. Imagine taking Endo for some takoyaki today. Being told about the people he saw come and go at his booth over the years and things he overheard would be as appetising as the cuisine. Despite the somewhat graphic nature of that Girl Diver artwork, getting down and dirty with a few octopuses doesn’t seem all that extreme anymore. Now there’s food for thought.

"ALIENS" (外星人)
Giorgio A. Tsoukalos said, “Knowledge is the currency of the universe,” and how right he was. But now, we live in an age of post-knowledge. In this post-information age, some suggest that we live in an era of personality, where charisma and gusto can get you anywhere regardless of the truth of what you’re doing or why (all of this with the world’s knowledge at our fingertips!). Today it can seem obvious that the man matters more than his view, and his wallet more still. Yet others believe that this is an era of experiences. In this experience age, it becomes more important to show rather than to tell. The rise of emojis, stickers, and entire social media platforms dedicated to personal photographs is exemplary of this. Perhaps we’ve inherited a blend of these two theories. Maybe our age is defined by egos presenting and misrepresenting their experiences, creating space invaders of a different sort. This is most observable in the types of television shows that cropped up in the early 2010s, when we moved away from documentaries and riveting dramas, and toward a sort of pseudoscientific, conspiracy-theory-driven media. A bunch of malarkey!
Unique Edition.

"All Along The Wires" (沿着电线)
We assume that uncaged birds are free. What if we are wrong about that? Cities, cats, windmills, airplanes—they all seem to hold down the bird that wishes to fly unfettered. If birds are limited by their environment, what about people? Søren Kierkegaard wrote that “either/or” isn’t really a choice. For Kierkegaard, the point is more about preserving possibilities. Share bikes allow us to have a free-range attitude, giving us the best of both worlds. We can ride to our heart’s desire and just dump the bike when we feel like it. Applying these ideas to the artworld reveals a unique situation. Contemporary art is predicated on two ideas: that possibilities abound, and that artists and viewers have free will. But most artist-viewer relationships are mediated by institutions like galleries and museums which reward artists and viewers for participating correctly. Everyone involved has been totalized by the institution, conditioned to processes artworks into a set of either/or dichotomies. The easiest key to success here? Self-censorship. Careful, methodical nothingness wins treasures. But going against the grain wins hearts. Go ahead and break the spell, give us a clap.

Picture this: thinly sliced meat, vegetables, mushrooms, tofu, and dumplings simmering in a spicy Sichuan broth. Hungry yet? Hot pot or huoguo (火锅) is more than a popular Chinese dish you must try, it’s like an immersive experience, that is heightened when shared with close friends. What better way to get to know someone on a more intimate level than by sharing a spicy broth? It’s believed it all started more than 1,000 years ago during the time of the Jin Dynasty. Legend has it Mongolian horsemen (who preferred to pack light), would use their helmets as pots to simmer broth over open fires, and their shields were used as a frying pan to cook meat! Traditionally this dish would be eaten during the harsh cold winters, due to its consistent warmth. Over the years this dish moved and morphed, adapting to different regions with local ingredients and flavors. The most famous variation is the Chongqing style, consisting of a dark red broth filled with 20 spices, chili peppers and of course the famous mouth numbing Sichuan pepper or huā jiāo (花椒). In present day, hotpot is a quintessential dish and is eaten year-round for its delicious flavor and because it’s seen as a social event. For the piece “Chuan Chuan Hot Pot”, the artists were inspired by this culinary tradition. The painting was made using a photographic reference from a street in Jing'an District, inspired by a real hotpot restaurant located at Shan Xi Bei Lu. This piece embodies the signature touch of our art collective, everyday street scenes illuminated by sparkling LED lights, resulting in a truly magical piece!

Winter is finally here! And dried sausages adorn windows, clothes racks, and electrical wires like festive lights announcing the coming of the new year!
Lachang (臘腸) is a special type of dried sausage, made from pork fat and innards, smoked and seasoned with rose water, rice wine, and soy sauce. It’s also a common sight to see chicken, duck, fish, and even eels hanging outside people’s homes during the coldest months of the year. This type of dried meat is collectively known as lawei (腊味) or cured meat and is consumed to celebrate the Spring Festival in China. The meat is heavily salted to draw out moisture and marinated for many days in huangjiu (黄酒) or yellow rice wine before being hung up for three to four weeks of wind drying. Cold curing is a traditional and natural process for preserving perishables, even in a modern city like Shanghai this ancient tradition is kept alive!
A lot of Liu Dao artworks focus on the grey area between tradition and modernity. The artists love the everyday street scenes like hanging laundry & cold dried meat along the shop fronts and sidewalks. The LED girl playing with the clothes is a reminder of how the everyday tasks can become whimsical and bright!
