As the spraying of herbicides becomes more frequent as farmers are now experiencing with Roundup, the surrounding weeds could also develop a resistance. This would naturally cause a further increase in the Roundup dosage and frequency or maybe a change in herbicide to another more hideous toxin surely in development. No one is yet sure whether the pests resistant characteristic of these GMO crops could be adopted into the surrounding weeds causing strains of them to become resistant and much more prolific. It can even get way more Convoluted and Scary Since the insect-resistant plants can cause increased death of it's familiar pest, couldn't that eliminate competition for the minor pests to then have them become a major problem? Or, maybe couldn't insect-resistant plants cause their familiar pest population to shift to another plant crop that was once unthreatened by them? These unintended effects could multiply out much further. A study of Bt crops showed that will unfortunately beneficial insects who prey on familiar crop pests were also naturally exposed to harmful quantities of Bt. We could now understand realistic possibilities for the effects to continue to reach further up the food web to eventually influence plants and animals consumed by humans.

Robinhood is very easy to navigate and use, but this has to do with its overall simplicity. Robinhood’s initial offering Faring was a mobile app, followed by a website launch in November 2017. As a result, Robinhood’s application and website are similar in appearance and experiences. Both making it easier to invest through the interface.

Withdrawing money from Robinhood
Withdraw money from Robinhood is very easy. You drag the main menu. Select Banking, then select Transfer to your bank, write the amount, confirm, and you’re done. Money can deposited into your bank account within 1 to 2 business days depending on the time of day your bank and the day you start transferring in simple steps.
Other answers are true, but they leave out the most important piece of information:
Let’s say you have an investment of $ 1000 in stock, and it makes a profit of $100. You want to sell all your shares and for whatever reason, and you want to transfer $1,100 to your bank account. However, it’s not immediately available for transfer to your account.
You must first wait for Robinhood to “reconcile your transaction” so that your “cash” can be labeled “withdrawable cash. I assume it’s 5 trading days or 7 calendar days (or 8 calendar days with holidays).
After this period, your $ 1,100 becomes a “withdrawable cash” that you can eventually transfer to your bank account. In the meantime, Robinhood has accumulated some interest on the idle money lying in your account when they “settle your transaction“.
After you transfer, it may take one or two days for the cash to make into your bank account.
So if you ever need some actively invested money to go through the process of transferring from Robinhood to your bank account. Make sure you give yourself 7-10 calendar days in advance!

The Experiment: Ch. 2
A few familiar gems make appearances in the new colony.

The list was long. Many demands were made.
That was of course because they needed many things.
But of all the supplies they needed for an experiment at this large of a scale, they needed more gems.
The infants had to grow in a similar environment as the humans for this experiment to continue. That meant every infant gem had to have at most two gems watching over its progress.
They needed gems who could help produce and create the supplements the infant gems needed to consume. So much work had to be done to raise them.
Finally, they needed a gem in charge of training and education.
Citrine was sure her list was comprehensive and simple. The gems could be volunteers for all she cared, as long as she got results. She adjusted her visor and glanced around the grand hall of their ship.
None of the gems aboard were volunteers. In fact, Citrine wondered if the Diamonds sent the defects and oddities just to get them off home world.
Regardless of whether they were volunteers or not, every gem on the ship now had a purpose. She looked down at the infant gem still in her arms. He would one day have a purpose.
Citrine gasped when she saw a gem she never thought she’d see again.
He carried a data pad with an unamused expression and stepped in front of a small podium, clicking the heels of his boots together. The oddly shaped gem on his chest shined in the light.
“All right, listen up everyone.” He said loudly. Nobody bothered paying attention. He growled and summoned a fiery whip and cracked it in the air. All eyes were turned to him.
“I am Red Agate. I’ve been assigned to make sure everything goes smoothly in the colony. Now introducing Citrine...” the agate glance down down at his pad, “Snee.” Citrine groaned and ran a hand through her curly hair.
“Cut 5 facet NE3.” She said softly, chuckles rising. She walked to the podium.
He raised an eyebrow at her. Something was familiar about that citrine.
“When we arrive at the colony, you’ll have your assignments and be given one of our infant gems. The pod they are in will monitor their embryonic growths. In nine months they will be ready to be removed, but not ready for education and training. Those gems in charge of nutritional supplementation will be tasked and creating a consumable substance helping their growths.” Citrine pused allowing everyone to take in everything.
“This experiment will take time, but I can assure you, the praise of the Diamonds at its success will be worth it.” Citrine said joyfully. Everyone cheered.
Almost everyone. The red agate crossed his arms and turned away. His fingers brushed against his gem.
The ship approached Earth.
The colony was cloaked and under a mountain. The nearest entry was for the ship to fly through a darkened cave. Red Agate went to the cockpit to look out the window. The peridot flying was careful to avoid any and all rocks.
“Are we there yet?” Red Agate asked
“In one moment Red.” The peridot answered. The front of her clothes was pulled upward and she was held nose to nose up to Red Agates face.
“It’s Mr. Agate or Red Agate. Never just Red.” He growled
“Y-yes Mr. Agate.” The peridot stammered
Something beeped. And they saw nothing. Peridot handled the controls and sent a code to the colony. A giant white dome appeared in front of them.
As they disembarked, gems were paired up and given smaller pods holding infant gems. Red Agate supervised as Citrine and the other scientists handed them out. Citrine still held the premature peridot in her arms.
“Those are going to get bigger?” He questioned, raising an eyebrow at the small gem.
“In time, yes.” Citrine answered, handing out the last pod.
“Oh, I guess... that’s it then?” A blue agate asked.
Red Agate looked at her, and found he couldn’t look away. Large spots of blue were patterned all over her, like him with his red spots. She was beautiful. He shook his head, trying to hear what was going on. Unable to catch on, he lifted his chin and looked down on the smaller gems.
“It seems you have everything under control, Citrine.” He said, “I’ll go survey the colony. If anything needs to be fixed, you’ll find out.”
“Very well Red Agate.” Citrine nodded her head
Red Agate walked through the colony. It was a simple enough set up.
Housing for rest and leisure filled up most of the space. False foliage similar to Earths own were scattered around. Made the colony feel bigger. In the distance were skyscrapers to handle business. Whatever kind of business has yet to be decided. Small domes closed off the science and research district. A few gems were heading that way.
“Move it!” A short watermelon tourmaline said, shoving past Red Agate.
And in the center of the colony were buildings arranged to form a diamond. This was meant to be the education center. Agate would oversee everything. He looked down at his data pad. There was an arranged list of gems who would assist in the education.
And the blue agate he saw earlier would be there assisting in the supplementation.
Something fluttered in his gem.
He shook his head.
The darn thing always made him feel things. Sometimes, he heard whispers that he was sure were caused by his gem, and sometimes, he didn’t feel like himself. The gem weighed heavy with the burden of his duties. Duties he wasn’t sure he wanted to do. An accident that nearly shattered him ruined his gem. At least he could still summon his whip.
At least he was still useful to someone.
Some...one...
Red Agate continued his survey of the colony. He looked up at the simulated sky. Then he stubbed his toe.
“Ack! Oh!” He growled, ready to remove whatever cause during him such pain.
It was a warp pad. It was dusty but it might work still. He made a note on his datapad to rest it at a later date. Beyond the warp pad is where he saw it.
A crack in the dome.
He pushed to make it bigger for himself to climb through. His gem glowed to shine his way in the dark cave. A pinpoint of light was far ahead, the entrance he assumed. The colony was perfectly camouflaged. If anything came into the cave, nobody would be the wiser. He walked further down the cave, letting the light from the colony fade behind him.
He stopped at a spot that felt flat and level. He could see dusty marks from old footprints, two small footprints, then one larger pair that walked away. Was this where a fusion occurred? Although he never had been to Earth before, something felt familiar. He put a hand to his gem.
There was laughter
Come on Red!
Aggy, slow down!
They reached out to each other.
A loud boom echoed through the stony space. Red Agate turned around and ran back to the colony. The ship was on fire. Everything was unloaded, but without the vessel, they were stranded. Red Agate pushed his way to the front of a crowd that had gathered.
“How did this happen?” He asked as calmly as he could. He sensed the gems surrounding the smoldering ship step back away from him. Not receiving an answer, he turned around. His red spots glowed red.
“WHAT HAPPENED?!” He demanded
“We don’t know! Everything was going fine, until,” a ruby started, not daring to look in his eyes.
“We unloaded the ship, but then something beeped, and poof!” An amethyst finished, holding another amethyst gem in her hands. “It exploded.”
“Y-you mean... we’re stranded?!” A pearl cried out
“Calm down everyone!” Red Agate yelled
He pulled out his datapad and scrolled through the list of gems. He knew there was at least one here in the colony. Just had to find her on the list to be sure.
“Sapphire, cut 18 Facet MM 1.” He read to himself.
Now he just had to find her.
Gems stayed out of his way. Charred footsteps followed him. He stormed the living quarters. That sapphire had to be here somewhere. He stopped at the door labeled with her numbers. He banged a fist on it. A voice came from within before any sound could leave his open mouth.
“I’m coming Rutile. I told you that the equipment was wor-” the door slid open the sapphire froze, her eye traveling upwards to the red agate.
Red Agate was surprised by her appearance. He had seen many kinds of sapphires, but not a green one.
“Red Agate.” She said with a curtsy, despite not wearing a skirt like most, “I’m sorry for yelling, I was expecting the rutile down the hall. Please come in.”
Red Agate stepped inside. It was modest. He assumed all quarters were like this. A main room for discussion and work with a few chairs and a couch, a couple closets, and a smaller room for rest.
Something struck him. The green sapphire stepped in front of him.
“You weren’t expecting me?” Red Agate asked
“I was expecting someone. Just... not you.” The sapphire said, crossing her arms.
“Do you even know what I’m doing here?” He asked, spots starting to glow again.
“Oh uh, y-well... I.... I’m not that kind of sapphire.” She admitted sheepishly
Red Agate groaned loudly, letting himself collapse on one of the seats.
“Figures. The one sapphire in the colony and she has no clarity.” He said, spots dimming.
“I have clarity!” Sapphire said indignantly. She shrank under Red Agates glare. “It uh, it just works the other way.” Red Agate sat up and raised an eyebrow.
“You can see the past?” He asked. The sapphire nodded. “Then can you see what happened to our ship, before we flew here, before the mission, before the explosion?”
“...uh...” the green sapphire looked down. She clasped her hands together and focused.
“A bomb was detonated. Weight activated, it went off when the last crate was removed, but an amethyst was still on board.” She said
“Bomb?” Red Agate whispered to himself.
“Before that, we flew, and before that everything was being loaded, an-... I see something. A gem, no there was more than one. The others were discussing plans of loading. She attached the bomb as she was surveying the ship. She said.... oh no.”
“Who was the gem? Is she still here?” Red Agate asked
“You’re not going to like it.” Sapphire said fearfully, backing away. “I might not see the future, but I know when people are going to get mad because of the past.”
“Who was the gem?” Red Agate asked again, annoyed and frustrated.
“She’s on homeworld. You can do nothing about her here.” Sapphire said, still backing away.
Red Agate summoned his whip and pulled her back. She cried out at the burning ropes that pinned her arms to her sides. She felt her gem in the center of her back heat up. Red Agate leaned closer and moved her hair out from her eye.
“Who was the gem?” He asked a final time in a deep growling voice.
“IT WAS YELLOW DIAMONDS PEARL! They sent us to Earth because of a creature called the Cluster that will destroy the entire planet! They sent all of us defects and off colors here to die!!!” Sapphire yelled, tears leaking from her eye.
Red Agate stared at her numbly, unsure of how to react.
Of course they would send gems like her and him here. It should have been obvious this was a death sentence. He never did like the Diamonds. Perhaps him raising his voice against him during a new gem training session was overheard. But how dare they get rid of them?
Unknowingly, he started to pull his whip tighter and tighter, until,
Poof!
A green sapphire gemstone clattered to the floor. Red Agate sighed as he made his whip disappear.
“The Diamonds have forsaken us. They don’t care whether we live or die on this planet.” He muttered. He picked up the gem and made a bubble around it. It was red tinted with an odd dark red spot on it. He put it on one of the seats and left the quarters.
“Rutile?” He called out, closing the door behind him. Down the hall emerged a gem from her quarters. She was surprised by the agate.
“Green Sapphire doesn’t want to talk to you for a week. Then you can go back to her place.” He said
The gem was shocked by this news. She glanced down the hall at the sapphires room, tears in her eyes. Red Agate walked away, a sadistic grin spreading across his face.
Least he found something that made him smile on this gem forsaken planet.

IBFAN is one of the longest-surviving single-issue organisations, and it was founded on 12th October, 1979 after the joint meeting of WHO and UNICEF on Infant and Young Child Feeding. IBFAN-ICDC LAUNCHES THE CHINESE ANNOTATED COMPILATION OF CODE AND WHA RESOLUTIONS
Breastfeeding rates in China are low and ever declining, the current exclusive breastfeeding rate is at 19%, and continued breastfeeding rate is 8%. 4 out of every 5 children in China are denied the full benefits of breastfeeding. It is not a coincidence that China also has the largest market in the world for formula milk products. Valued at $17,783 million, it accounted for 46% of milk formula market in 2015, and is forecasted to increase by 100% by 2019. In 2016, China took a big retrogressive step by repealing its 1995 law (which was weak to begin with) without any replacement, thus eliminating all forms of legal protection from inappropriate marketing of breastmilk substitutes. All facts point to the dire urgency for China to implement the International Code (and relevant WHA resolutions), which have also led IBFAN-ICDC to launch 国际母乳代用品销售守则及世界卫生大会相关决议: 汇编和注释 – the Chinese version of the Annotated Compilation of Code and WHA Resolutions, with the support from UNICEF EAPRO.

CODE TRAINING FOR MALAYSIAN BREASTFEEDING PEER COUNSELLORS

From 23- 24 February 2019, ICDC’s team comprising of our Director, Annelies Allain, Legal Advisor, Yeong Joo Kean and Junior Legal Officer, Jane Tang were in Bangi, Selangor to provide training to members of the Malaysian Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Association (MBfPCA). Noreen Fazila, Senior Assistant Director, from the Nutrition Department of the Ministry of Health gave a presentation on Code implementation in Malaysia. The participants of this training comprised of mothers and health professionals, including trainers from MBfPCA. They are all passionate about breastfeeding and keen to learn more about the Code and how it could improve their role as peer counsellors.[Read more]
ICDC CONSULTANTS IN TIMOR-LESTE FOR A SECOND VISIT TO PROMOTE CODE IMPLEMENTATION
Timor Leste ready to give effect to the International Code to protect breastfeeding.
Subsequent to the first visit in November 2018, ICDC consultants made a second visit to Dili, Timor-Leste from 11 to 15 February. The purpose of the mission was to provide technical support to the government and UNICEF on giving effect to the International Code in ways that fit the social, economic, political and legislative framework of Timor-Leste. ICDC KICKING OFF THE NEW YEAR IN DHAKA BANGLADESH

Invited by IBFAN’s country group in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Breastfeeding Foundation (BBF), ICDC’s Legal Advisor, Yeong Joo Kean and Programme Manager, Constance Ching were in Dhaka to provide training on the implementation and monitoring of the Bangladesh BMS Act (Act No. 35 of 2013) from 20 to 22 January, 2019. 13 years after the last visit, ICDC was delighted to be invited to train on a revised, better and stronger law; one which WHO/UNICEF and IBFAN classified as a “Category 1” law – which means, the 2013 BMS Act, read together with its 2017 Regulations, has managed to fulfil most international recommendations. Participants of the training consisted of BBF Health Workers and Programme Managers, as well as officials from the Institute of Public Health Nutrition (IPHN). An online monitoring tool was developed at the end of the training to make reporting more convenient for monitors as well as for BBF to share data with relevant government agencies.[Read more]
25 COUNTRIES ISSUE ALERTS AND WITHDRAWALS OF CONTAMINATED RICE-BASED FORMULAS AND BABY FOODS
Powdered infant formulas are NOT sterile products.
Packaged baby milk and foods in powder form are not sterile products and can become contaminated by harmful bacteria during the production process. Many parents, care-givers and health professionals are aware that the water used to prepare powdered infant and follow-up formulas and cereals may be contaminated by bacteria. But few are aware that bacteria such as Salmonella, Enterobacter/ Cronobacter sakazakii and Bacillus cereus can be introduced during the manufacturing stages of these highly-processed products. These bacteria thrive in warm milk and can multiply rapidly when the powder is mixed with warm water, causing serious illness in infants and young children. Even though all labels of powdered formulas must include texts to warn that these are not sterile products, whether they are milk-based, rice-based or soy-based; the reality is that very few manufacturers include the warning or labels or instructions for preparation to reduce the risk to infant health. Also, sometimes it takes a while to make the connection between the contaminated products and cases of food poisoning in infants and young children. “We believed that the essence of life was a dead molecule, DNA, and that we could improve life by changing this molecule in the lab … and that a single genetic change would always have one intentional effect only.”

There are also indirect consequences. The chemical compound used in the RNA manipulation process is one that also combats plant pests, and if the fruit’s ability to fend off pests is impaired, growers will end up having to use more pesticides.
How to Avoid GMO Potatoes
Based on Rommens testimony it would seem wise to steer clear of the GE Innate® potato. To avoid them:
Avoid any potato sold under the Simplot Innate® brand
Avoid White Russet™ potatoes, as well as any other white russet potato, as contamination between GE and non-GE varieties could be a problem
Check the potatoes for spots. GE varieties will not have spots
Check the potato for browning once peeled or cut in half. Non-GE varieties typically start browning within two minutes (see video above)
Avoid processed foods made with potato ingredients, such as frozen dinners, powdered potatoes, soup with potatoes and potato chips, as processed foods typically use GE ingredients. Also avoid ordering russet potatoes when eating out, unless they’re guaranteed non-GMO or organic

Beware of GMO Potatoes
Any product made with potato will henceforth be subject to added scrutiny before it can receive The Non-GMO Project’s verification stamp.1 The reason? The now widespread prevalence of genetically engineered (GE) potato in the U.S. food supply.
The first-generation GE Innate® potato, developed by J.R. Simplot Co. and branded simply as White Russet™, was approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in 2014 and entered the U.S. marketplace the following year.2 Canada approved it in 2016.3
The Innate® potato has been modified using RNA interference (RNAi) technology to inhibit blackspot bruising and browning by reducing levels of asparagine and certain enzymes in the potato. In addition to white russet potatoes, ranger russet, russet Burbank and Atlantic potatoes have also been modified in this way.
The Non-GMO Project has also announced4 the marketing of a new high-oleic acid GE soy variety, engineered with TALEN gene editing technology. It too has been added to the Project’s high-risk list and is ineligible for The Non-GMO Project Verification label. According to Megan Westgate, executive director of The Non-GMO Project:5
“The supply chain risks we’re now seeing from new GMOs are unprecedented in the decade we’ve been verifying products. Not only are new GE techniques being used, but in some cases biotechnology companies are using unscientific arguments to deceive the public into thinking their products are non-GMO.”
GMO Potatoes Hide Spoilage
J.R. Simplot claims the nonbrowning potatoes benefit consumers, farmers and the environment by cutting down on food spoilage waste and reducing water use and greenhouse gas emissions.6 Trials have shown the Innate® potatoes result in farmers discarding 15 percent fewer potatoes due to bruising and spotting.7
“Another great advantage of Innate® potatoes is that they can be cut, peeled or diced in advance. With Innate’s reduced browning benefits, potatoes can be prepared ahead of time, and stay fresher-looking longer.
In addition to reducing waste, nonbrowning potatoes give foodservice operators and restaurants options for labor savings and off-site peeling or dicing,” Simplot’s website states.
However, as noted by Westgate,” browning is nature’s most visible way of letting you know a product is rotting. GMOs that use RNAi to mask the signs of bruising could lead consumers to unknowingly ingest an unhealthy, toxic product.”
According to Simplot, however, by reducing asparagine, which creates acrylamide, a probable carcinogen, at high temperatures, the Innate® potatoes lower the potential health hazards associated with baked, fried and roasted potatoes.8
Second generation Innate® potatoes are currently under regulatory review. In addition to being nonbrowning, these second generation crops are also engineered to be blight resistant. According to a February 28, 2017, press release:9
“[T]he United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have completed their independent reviews and granted registrations and clearances for three varieties of Simplot’s second generation of INNATE® potatoes.
The three varieties have already been deregulated by the USDA so these new agency registrations and clearances permit these proprietary bioengineered potatoes to be grown and sold in the United States.
The INNATE® Gen. 2 Russet Burbank, Ranger Russet and Atlantic varieties contain significant benefits to growers, processors and consumers with reduced bruising and black spots; reduction of the natural chemical compound asparagine; protection from late blight pathogens; and enhanced cold storage capability.”
Creator of GMO Potatoes Reveals Danger
How can we know Innate® potatoes are a health risk? Because their creator, a genetic engineer named Caius Rommens, former director of researcher and development for the potato program at J.R. Simplot Co. and a former team leader at Monsanto, wrote an entire book about it.
In “Pandora’s Potatoes: The Worst GMOs,”10 released October 7, 2018, Rommens reveals these and similar GE potatoes contain “unstable traits, two of which appear to have been lost already (or are in the process of being lost).”
He also claims the GE potatoes “suffer a significant yield drag and reduction in size profile, conceal bruises and potentially spread diseases, may be grown and stored in ways that maximize disease and pest pressures … [and] are also likely to contain new toxins. If it were up to me, the creator of these potatoes, I would call them Pandora’s Potatoes. They are the worst GMOs ever commercialized.” Rommens also discusses his concerns in an interview with Sustainable Pulse, in which he says:11
“I had my potatoes tested in greenhouses or the field, but I rarely left the laboratory to visit the farms or experimental stations. Indeed, I believed that my theoretical knowledge about potatoes was sufficient to improve potatoes. This was one of my biggest mistakes …
It is amazing that the USDA and FDA approved the GM potatoes by only evaluating our own data. How can the regulatory agencies assume there is no bias? When I was at J.R. Simplot, I truly believed that my GM potatoes were perfect … I was biased and all genetic engineers are biased …
We test our GM crops to confirm their safety, not to question their safety. The regulatory petitions for deregulation are full with meaningless data but hardly include any attempts to reveal the unintended effects.
For instance, the petitions describe the insertion site of the transgene, but they don’t mention the numerous random mutations that occurred during the tissue culture manipulations.
And the petitions provide data on compounds that are safe and don’t matter, such as the regular amino acids and sugars, but hardly give any measurements on the levels of potential toxins or allergens.”
Genetic Engineers Know ‘Just Enough to Be Dangerous’
Rommens says he left J.R. Simplot, where he was in charge of up to 50 scientists, once he realized there were significant problems with his creation. “Looking back at myself and my colleagues, I believe now that we were all brainwashed; that we all brainwashed ourselves,” he says.
“We believed that the essence of life was a dead molecule, DNA, and that we could improve life by changing this molecule in the lab … and that a single genetic change would always have one intentional effect only.”
Indeed, science reveals it simply doesn’t work that way, and that even minor modifications can trigger a cascade of unintended effects. Here’s just one case in point: Researchers decided to search for unintended mutations using research data from a study that used CRISPR-Cas9 to restore sight in blind mice by correcting a genetic mutation.12
They sequenced the entire genome of the CRISPR-edited mice, and in addition to the intended genetic edit they found more than 100 additional deletions and insertions, along with more than 1,500 single-nucleotide mutations.
“We were supposed to understand DNA and to make valuable modifications, but the fact of the matter was that we knew as little about DNA as the average American knows about the Sanskrit version of the Bhagavad Gita,” Rommens tells Sustainable Pulse.13
“We just knew enough to be dangerous, especially when combined with our bias and narrowmindedness. We focused on short-term benefits (in the laboratory) without considering the long-term deficits (in the field).
It was the same kind of thinking that produced DDT, PCBs, Agent Orange, recombinant bovine growth hormone, and so on. I believe that it is important for people to understand how little genetic engineers know, how biased they are and how wrong they can be.”
How GMO Potatoes Stack Up Against Conventional Potatoes
According to Rommens, his GMO potatoes had a number of problems. Their growth was stunted and the plants frequently died. The tubers were also frequently misshapen, and the leaves pale yellow rather than bright green, a condition known as chlorosis, caused by insufficient production of chlorophyll.
Sterility and necrosis, where the plant’s tissues turn brown or black as a result of cell degeneration and death, were other problems noted by Rommens. Necrosis is typically the result of nutrient deficiencies. According to Rommens, one of the reasons his GE potatoes are so inferior has to do with the fact that they’re derived from somatic cells, and somatic cells are only meant to survive for a single season.
“These cells don’t have the genetic integrity to create new plants (like pollen cells and egg cells),” he explains. “So, by transforming somatic cells, we created GM potatoes that contained hundreds of genetic mutations, and these mutations compromised yield. Additionally, the genetic modifications often have ‘unintended’ effects that negatively affect both the agronomic performance and nutritional quality of a crop.”
Rommins claims he was even wrong about the potatoes’ bruise resistance. The potatoes bruise just as easily as normal potatoes, he claims; you just cannot see the bruises because the discoloration has been deactivated.
And this, Rommons says, is actually a significant problem, because the melanin — the compound that causes the dark coloration14 — is actually a protective compound that helps prevent entry by pathogens when the potato is damaged. What’s worse, these now-invisible bruises may actually accumulate toxins.
How Does RNAi Gene Silencing Work?
RNAi is also known as post transcriptional gene silencing. The two scientists who discovered RNAi — Andrew Fire and Craig Mello — received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2006.15 In a 2015 MIT Technology Review article, Antonio Regalado describes the RNAi gene silencing process thus:16
“The cells of plants and animals carry their instructions in the form of DNA. To make a protein, the sequence of genetic letters in each gene gets copied into matching strands of RNA, which then float out of the nucleus to guide the protein-making machinery of the cell.
