"Her Majesty looks put out." Lady Jersey's voice was audible to all around her. "They say the King is madder than ever, and our fat friend is going the same route." But a ravishing older woman with an eye for the Prince stopped Jersey abruptly with a formidable glare. She went directly to Colonel McMahon- "God Forbid the Prince ever hear HER words... A two-faced snake has no place amongst his friends, I hope he'll have the good sense to expel such an insufferable creature from his circles.."

“I’m sure he will, dear lady,” the colonel replied dryly, “if you advise him to do so. His Royal Highness is always attentive to the wisdom of his female friends.” 

He had no intention of taking sides in such matters. Lady Jersey, after all, had a great deal of influence with the Prince and McMahon was loath to anticipate the vagaries of his master’s affections. He was certain, however, that the Prince’s recent reconciliation with Mrs Fitzherbert would be of a very limited duration. His Royal Highness was, as Mr Sheridan was fond of saying, too much a ladies’ man to be the man of any lady.
