With all respect, does the hope for a latina Sophie mean hopes for her to have travelled from central/South America like Kate came from India?

I just wonder if the hopes for a latina Sophie are looking at the show with too much of an American view when the leads thus far have all been exclusively British/Irish. Finding a British actress with latin roots could be exceptionally hard given they are such a tiny demographic in the UK, unless the show hires outside the UK and gives her a migration backstory - a la Kate from India or Lady Danbury from Africa.

wanting a Latina Sophie literally just means 'portrayed by actress of Hispanic ethnicity'. This is the show that as you rightfully pointed out had an INDIAN family travelling trough Britain as tho there was no British occupation in said country. We all know they can do whatever they want and just gloss over the explanation like they did with the disappearance of the Duke of Hastings.

Sophie could come from Mexico and Bridgerton would be like ' yeah she's an immigrant, shit happened in her motherland' and proceeded to brush it over with the Queen Charlotte deux ex machina wig of ' we changed society with love'. Canonically Sophie's name in the book is Sophia Maria, it's hinted that her mother was a Singer. For all we Singer could have been Guatemalan, with a little bit of the kind of editing that gave us Papa Sharma. Was Guatemala even a country in 1800?, who cares, if the show doesn't go out of it's way to point it out, I certainly wont.

But all jokes aside, Sophie is most likely going to be black, it's Shondaland, who are we kidding. Lets play a little game of probability shall we? take a look at the actors in Scandal, Grey's Anatomy and How to Get Away with Murder ( just off the top of my head) And, without counting anyone Caucasian, compare the amount of Black actors hired for speaking roles, with the amount of indian, asian, and Hispanic actors overlapping for speaking roles in the same season. Then come back and tell me what odds I'm looking at for a Latina Sophie, do it, I'll wait.

Don't get me wrong, I'm perfectly fine with whatever ethnicity Sophie ends up being, but personally when I say I support a Latina Sophie its because Latinos are possibly the only community that so far has had no speaking roles in Bridgerton. In 3 seasons of diversity and poc blind casting, that's a problem that should be addressed. They made up a reason why interracial marriage was acceptable in the show, make up a reason for a Latino to have the Gunningworth title, it's not that hard.

But hey that's just my opinion.

“Ben, you’re 4 o’clock is here!”

“Coming!” Benedict called back to Eloise, wiping his hands and huffing at the sketch before him. It was passable and his client would like it, but it was just missing…something.

 He came to the front desk of the parlour and stood in front of it, peering over the computer.

“Who’s my 4.00 again?”

Eloise sighed and shuffled her A-Level textbook and notes that she had crammed onto the thrifted desk. “A Miss SB. Didn’t give her full name, asked for a private session. Cash.”

“Ooh a fun one.”

A commonplace practice, normally for rebellious teens or men in three-piece suits who dared to dip their toe in their dark side.

“She’s over there—hasn’t sat down. Considering her attire, she is probably wondering if the sofas are contaminated,” Eloise whispered. Benedict snorted.

“Are we talking St Trinians or Wild Child?”

“Wild Child—the snooty ones at the beginning of the movie who can barely breath because their noses are so upturned.”

“Be nice.”

“I’m sure you will be—she’s a pretty one.”

“You say that about every girl that comes in,” Eloise shrugged at his comment and adjusted her purple hair. “Luckily for me I get to make her beautiful.”

“Or ruin her.”

“Whichever is more fun.” He batted back with a wink.

“Gross.” Eloise shoved him away and he chuckled.

“You love me.”

“Ugh, don’t even look at me.”

She pushed him away and he was still chuckling as he turned to face the client.

And he stopped.

“Um, hello.” The girl fiddled with the strap of her little handbag, her French manicured nails glinting. “I’m…I’m Ella—I mean Sophie.” She held out her hand, her nervous little smile only making her features more enchanting—such as her evergreen eyes. “I’m Sophie Beckett. I’m here to get a tattoo?”

sophie grew up on the countryside in east anglia . she’s the illegitimate daughter of richard gunningworth , earl of pennwood and a maid who died at childbirth . until she was three , she was raised by her grandmother until she died and was taken in by the earl  the earl never really acknowledged her as her daughter, instead he claimed her to be a ward and the orphaned child of a friend . however, she enjoyed the benefits of sometimes traveling with her father and wearing fine clothes as well as receiving lessons such as  french and latin lessons. most of the time, she was lonely as her father never acknowledged her as his daughter or left her to be alone . sophie spent most of her time with the staff , so when she found out about the earl’s marriage to araminta ( her stepmother ), she hoped her loneliness would vanish by their presence. especially since she’d two daughters , posy and rosamund . however, her hopes were crushed and her stepmother and stepsister rosamund did not treat her kindly. and matters became worse when her father passed away and araminta made sophie their maid. eventually, she ended up being kicked out by her stepmother, with no possessions. to make a living, she continued working as a servant for other families as they did not want to hire her as a governess. eventually, she ended up working for the bridgertons by whom she felt very welcomed as she’d never been treated so kindly by anyone before . in fact, she kind of views them as a family , however, she tries to deny that thought as she fears of ending up being hurt as she doesn’t know how long her employment might last.

when she has time she likes to read what she calls “silly” novels. of course, she does enjoy them  her accent and speech is that of someone from a higher upbringing and is unusual for someone who claims to be a servant  she knows how to speak latin and french  she’s aware of her status , yet sometimes she catches herself being envious of these of higher status as they remind her of the life she could have  she wishes nothing but to have a family and children. however, she knows that that dream probably would never come true  she’s very secretive of her past and does not like to talk about it. especially, thinking about her stepmother or thinking about having to see her again, frightens her to the core.

Yess, Sophie Baek for the win (I feel like it just makes sense for her character. I'm using that for my fic too.) We are manifesting East Asian/SE-Asian Sophie for season 4!

Hmmm. With my edits I have too many I like but I think my Bridgerton Magazine one is iconic! It was a really big project and I definitely have learned a lot about layout and design since then!

I’d have to say one of my favorites is my Legitimate Sophia au (Lady Sophia Maria Gunningworth). It’s my baby rn and I wish I had more time to write it, but spring semester is kicking my ass and I have to use so much time to work on assignments 😭

I have so many tabs opened and edits ready but I can’t share them bc I don’t have the time to write :( The next chapter is about halfway done and maybe will come out soon (no promises).

My passion for the show/fandom has also dipped in all honesty. With the culture of production, fans, treatment of actors (especially bipoc ones) it’s hard to make something for it. I haven’t said goodbye but I definitely don’t think about it 24-7 anymore!
