I started reading Dungeon Meshi. I'm very confused. Are their names Lyos and Chilchalk. Does this change.
So, the manga was translated before official English spellings were released. Their names in Japanese are ライオス (Raiosu) and チルチャック (Chiruchakku). "L" doesn't exist in Japanese, it's almost always replaced with "R" or omitted entirely. So what they did was take the Japanese names and try to pronounce them in a more western way:
Raiosu -> Lyos (R -> L, cut the "u" out because it's barely voiced). Then the official English came out, and it was Laios. Same pronunciation, the official just didn't change ai -> y.
Chiruchakku -> Chilchalk (R -> L, cut the "u" like for Laios. Chalk is because "chakku" has the "a" as a short "o," like in "hop," whereas if you wrote Chilchak, English readers would read it as rhyming with "track"). Official English has him as Chilchuck, which is similar to how "chakku" sounds in Japanese. Two different directions in transliteration made by two different teams.
It gets corrected about 2/3rds through, because that's when the English spelling came out.

Are the names in the Dungeon Meshi manga different than the anime? I haven't watched the anime but Laios is Lyos and Marcille is Marshil in my manga translation

Hello! A note about Dungeon Meshi: the English translation bungles the names a bit. Despite whatever it says, the character names are Laios, Falin, Chilchuck, Marcille, and Senshi
So not Lyos and Farlyn then? Got it
