Rant about the book Jom is reading

The book Jom is reading from is Khan Chang Khan Phaen, a Thai literary classic. It is folklore from Siphon Buri and was only written down long after it was conceived.

The story by modern standards is quite problematic, I have summarised the story below but there is a TL;DR below this paragraph;

Khun Phaen (previous name, Phlai Kaeo), Wan Thong (previous name, Pham Phi La Lai) and Khun Chang were childhood friends, Shun Chang is handsome whilst Shun Phaen is balding. Wan Thong would fall in love with Khun Phaen and Khun Chang would fall in love with Wan Thong and they marry but he was sent to command an army to Ching Mai. During his absence, Khan Chang came up with a scheme to get Wan Thong to marry him, by lying that Khun Phaen was killed in action, it worked and Wan Thong was unwillingly married to him. When Khun Phaen came back, he found what happened and tried to get Wan Thong back, despite him finding a wife in Chiang Mai already. He kidnap Wan Thong from Khan Chang, getting a 3rd wife in process. Each side would kidnap Wan Thong back and fourth a couple times which led to a trial by Phra Phanwasa (meaning the Queen mother), the matriarch of the Kingdom, which ended in Wan Thong being executed for not wanting to commit to either men.

TL;DR a woman gets stuck in a love triangle between a man she loved which betrayed her trust and a man she didn't love who treated her well but their relationship was based on lies. In the end she was executed for not committing to a relationship. (Who could blame her to be honest)

Parts of this epic is actually mandated in Thai schools (I had this for one of my Thai midterms, lol) and in the education system, they focus on the literary rather than the historical context behind the epic.

Many scholars such as Sujit Wongthes believe that this epic is actually a story about a fictional hero of the Suphannaphum Kingdom, one of the kingdoms that would become Ayutthaya in the 14th century. The Suphannaphum dynasty would rule Ayutthaya for much of its early history, which might explain how the story is so widespread.

Sujit believes that many aspects of the epic is representative of the early history of the Suvarnabhumi (not the airport) region, such as

Khun Phaen being a name for the Hindu god of creation, Brahma

Khun Phaen's magical sword, the "Fa Fuen" is named after an ancestral god of the Nan and Luang Prabang region.

When presenting the "Fa Fuen" to Phra Phanwasa, she placed it next to the Chai Si sword, which is representative of the Lao-Khmer origins of Ayutthaya.

All in all, Sujit argues that this folklore is more rooted in the ruling classes than the popular folk. This analysis of Khun Chang Khun Phaen is not present in the episode though, as this would ruin the mood of it so much.

But its inclusion even though it seems out of place (Suphan Buri is in the central parts of Thailand whilst the story is set in the north), is actually not that weird. In the period of the series, Bangkok has just had a major reforms to local administration, ditching the Mandala system in favour of western style centralisation based on colonial administration in the Dutch East Indies. This had the effect of Bangkok suppressing Lanna culture and a "Siamisation" of Lanna. Yai's family who I presume is local administrators sent from Bangkok shows this very cleary, he doesn't try to blend in with locals, he speak the central (Siamese) tongue and reads Siamese literature.

The inclusion of this epic rather than using something most Thai people already know to create the scene, it also creates the historical backdrop in which the series is set.

Xiong was born in 1973 in Phab Kheb, Laos, one of 11 children in a family that fled the country in 1975 and spent four years in a refugee camp in Thailand before emigrating to the United States, according to Sahan Journal. He grew up in St. Paul and was valedictorian of his class at Humboldt High School in 1992.

Xiong graduated with a political science degree from Carleton College in Northfield in 1996 and began traveling around the country as a motivational speaker, storyteller and rap artist, billing himself as the country's first Hmong comedian.

Xiong helped organize the first Hmong Minnesota Day at the Minnesota State Fair in 2015, and was named a Bush Fellow in 2019 to earn a master's degree in public affairs.

With Xiong's death, the Hmong American community in the Twin Cities has lost a true leader, "consummate organizer and cultural interpreter," said longtime friend Pakou Hang. In his presentations and writings, she said, Xiong was a teacher who tried to show people how to be kind, generous and do the right thing.

Xiong connected people across generational, cultural and political lines who traveled the United States to speak at schools, colleges and businesses, Hang said. As a friend, he could inspire laughter in every conversation, she said.

A highly regarded Hmong American activist, speaker and comedian from the Twin Cities was found dead Monday in Medellín, Colombia, after kidnappers demanded $2,000 in ransom from his family.

Tou Ger Xiong, 50, was killed while on a vacation to Medellín. His brother, Eh Xiong, confirmed his death Tuesday morning on Facebook.

"The pain of his loss is indescribable. We extend our deepest gratitude to all who have offered their condolences, thoughts, and prayers," Xiong's family wrote in the Facebook statement.

Xiong, who lived in Woodbury, was kidnapped Sunday after a date with a woman he met on social media, according to the Colombian newspaper El Colombiano.

A group of men contacted his family demanding $2,000 — the equivalent of $8 million in Colombian pesos — and killed him a day later without collecting the money.

Three American tourists, including Xiong, have been murdered in the last month, El Colombiano reported.

Kidnappings in Colombia are on the rise, according to authorities. In the first few months of 2022, 35 people were abducted in the country, and that figure is more than double this year for the same period.

Early last month, the father of a Colombian soccer star was freed after he was held for around a week by a guerrilla group.

Former state Sen. Mee Moua of St. Paul, for whom Xiong worked as a volunteer coordinator in her successful 2002 campaign, said in a statement that she was "weighed down with grief for my friend," and called Xiong "a one-of-a-kind modern-day hero."

U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum, D-St. Paul wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that Xiong's death was "devastating news" and that his work as a comedian and activist "touched many lives in the Twin Cities and beyond."

Hang said Xiong would perform skits based on his own stories growing up as a refugee and other lessons from the larger Hmong community. She recalled him bringing older Hmong women onto the stage to demonstrate how they would pick corn or fetch water as children, setting it to music and transforming it into a dance.

Xiong sought to connect first-generation Hmong American kids with classmates of other races, and strengthened intergenerational relationships with their families by making them proud to be Hmong, she said.

Xiong and Hang worked together on many community causes, including the formation of the Coalition for Community Relations, a group that traveled to rural Wisconsin from the Twin Cities in 2004 to "bear witness" at the trial of Chai Soua Vang, a Hmong American man eventually convicted for killing six hunters.

"We're not here to defend Chai," Xiong told the Star Tribune at the time. "We're coming together to accentuate the positives in the Hmong community."

Xiong also brought media attention to a hunger strike in Northern California in 2021 after a Hmong cannabis farmer was killed by police, Hang said. He flew to California to lead a march and gather stories. Discriminatory ordinances passed by Siskiyou County were later ruled unlawful.

"We don't have anyone else in the community like that," Hang said.

Ngồi sau lưng anh Be đi đường SG đêm tới quán mà cảm xúc một năm ùa về, cũng khoảng thời gian này năm ngoái đang còn thích anh chủ quán lắm, anh vì bận nên ngày làm ở công ty tối muộn mới lên quán rồi ngủ lại luôn. Muốn gặp anh thì chỉ có giấc 1-2h sáng thì mới có thời gian riêng cho hai đứa.

Mình cũng lì, lúc đó chẳng có gì ngoài cái liều cái gan, gặp được người mà mọi tiêu chuẩn mình đặt ra đều có, cứ thế lao vào, thời gian, tiền bạc cũng không eo hẹp gì để mà khó khăn với cảm xúc của mình. Thích thì làm, mình sợ mình bỏ lỡ người "hợp" với mình vậy, kệ người ta có đối đáp với mình ra sao. Vậy đó, nên mới có cuộc sống "bình yên" như giờ.

Lâu lắm anh mới gặp mình, sau cái hồi đó mình cũng ghé và gặp anh một lần, những lần sau không gặp được vì mình đi sớm về sớm. Không phủ nhận quán của anh rất dễ gắn bó, nó có tất cả chứ không riêng gì việc có anh. Mình đi giấc hôm đó cũng trễ, nên việc anh thấy mình bước vô cũng bất ngờ dữ. Lúc đó, anh lo chỗ ngồi, nước uống cho mình. Anh vẫn vậy, vẫn nhẹ nhàng, vẫn ga lăng, vẫn chu đáo và vẫn tỉ mỉ với mình. Cẩn thận xếp áo khoác cho mình, canh đỡ sợ mình say ngả ngớn rồi bật ngửa ra sau, thấy mình ngồi chấm mút mấy cục bột phô mai thì sẽ hỏi mình ăn gì nữa không, đói không.

Luôn vậy, ân cần đến lạ kì. Ân cần đến nỗi, cái cách anh cho mình tất cả ngoại trừ tình cảm của anh, khiến mình thấy cảm giác như "được bao nuôi" dày vò mình thế nào. Vậy nên sau một khoảng thời gian náo nhiệt, mình rời bỏ khỏi cuộc sống của anh một cách lặng lẽ, bằng một tin nhắn dốc hết tâm sức. Và đoạn tình cảm theo đuổi đó vẫn được kết thúc một cách ân cần, nhẹ nhàng giữa hai đứa mình.

Mình nhìn căn gác ở đó, luôn bảo với bạn mình rằng cái máy chiếu trên đó, hàng ghế được sắp xếp chỉn chu với một mức nhiệt độ máy lạnh vừa phải được đặt ra là vì mình. Tụi mình luôn coi phim, những bộ phim cũ mèm nhưng có ý nghĩa và ăn khuya mấy món siêu ngon, mình sẽ hỏi anh những tình tiết trong bộ phim một cách tập trung vì mình muốn gần anh hơn, rồi tụi mình deep talk với nhau về cuộc đời, về những góc đen của anh, nghe anh tâm sự một cách rất flexing nữa. Trời sáng là khi mỗi đứa một cái sofa, ngủ gật trong tiếng nhạc buồn.

Mình nghe bạn mình bảo, hồi mình rời khỏi cuộc sống anh, anh cũng có một giai đoạn khá suy. Nhưng mà là chuyện mãi sau này, khi mà anh đã gặp nhiều người anh nghĩ rằng anh thích họ, và rồi dù anh có dát lên tay người ta mấy cái iphone 15 promax đi nữa, vẫn không ai thật lòng thích anh một cách khờ dại như mình đã từng.

Con người ta là luôn thế, mất đi rồi mới biết cái mình bỏ rơi là thứ tuyệt vời ra sao.

Mình đã không còn thích anh như mình đã từng, người bên cạnh mình hiện tại không phải là người giống với bất kì ai đã bước qua cuộc đời mình trước đó. Anh ấy cũng có cái vụng về của mình, cái hoàn cảnh của anh cũng không tuyệt vời nếu so sánh với nhiều người khác.

Nhưng mà mình không cần cố gồng lên vì những bộ phim mình không hiểu, chịu đựng những cư xử không ra gì hoặc lắng nghe mấy câu nói tích cực nhưng độc hại.

Mình tự nguyện uống bia, ăn gà hấp và coi đá bóng với anh ấy, dù mình có hỏi 100 lần việt vị là gì ảnh vẫn sẽ từ tốn giải thích mình nghe, khóc cười làm gì cũng rất thoải mái. Người bên cạnh mình hiện tại, không khiến mình phải cố gắng hoà hợp.

Nhưng mà, để có thể dũng cảm chọn người hiện tại. Mình đã có những quá khứ buồn vậy, buồn một cách đau lòng khi nhắc đến thế.

Người ta có can đảm thử, mới có gan rời bỏ.

Để mà nắm lấy thứ mà ông Trời sắp xếp cho ta.

HUANG MAO-TS’AI says, “What the world calls fame is something external. And yet people abandon their bodies to fight for it. What the world calls wealth is unpredictable. And yet people sacrifice their bodies to possess it. How can they know what is vital or precious? Even if they succeed, it’s at the cost of their health.”

SSU-MA KUANG says, “Which is more harmful: to gain wealth and fame and lose one’s health or to gain one’s health and lose wealth and fame?”

LU HUI-CH’ING says, “Heroes seek fame and merchants seek wealth, even to the point of giving up their lives. The first love fame because they want to glorify themselves. But the more they love fame, the more they lose what they would really glorify. Hence, the cost is high. The second amass wealth because they want to enrich themselves. But the more wealth they amass, the more they harm what they would truly enrich. Hence, the loss is great. Meanwhile, those who cultivate Virtue know the most vital thing is within themselves. Thus, they seek no fame and suffer no disgrace. They know the most precious things is within themselves. Thus, they seek no wealth and encounter no trouble. Hence, they live long.”

LI HSI-CHAI says, “If we love something, the more we love it, the more it costs us. If we treasure something, the more we treasure it, the more it exhausts us. A little of either results in shame. A lot results in ruin. And regret comes too late. People who are wise are not like this. They know that they have everything they need within themselves. Hence, they do not seek anything outside themselves. Thus, those who would shame them find nothing to shame. They know their own limit, and their limit is the Tao. Hence, they don’t act unless it is according to the Tao. Thus, those who would trouble them find nothing to trouble. Hence, they survive, and surviving, live long.”

HO-SHANG KUNG says, “Excessive sensual desire exhausts our spirit. Excessive material desire brings us misfortune. The living keep their treasures in storerooms. The dead keep their treasures in graves. The living worry about thieves. The dead worry about grave robbers. Those who know contentment find happiness and wealth within themselves and don’t exhaust their spirit. If they should govern a country, they don’t trouble their people. Thus, they are able to live long.”

HUAI-NAN-TZU says, “Long ago Chih Po-ch’iao attacked and defeated Fan Chung-hsing. He also attacked the leaders of the states of Han and Wei and occupied parts of their territories. Still, he felt this wasn’t enough, so he raised another army and attacked the state of Yueh. But Han and Wei counterattacked, and Chih’s army was defeated near Chinyang, and he was killed east of Kaoliang. His skull became a drinking bowl, his kingdom was divided among the victors, and he was ridiculed by the world. This is what happens when you don’t know when to stop.”

Dislyte Chinese Names

alright strap in i made an entire informational post just for a thing that made me laugh and im gonna explain it

fun fact time: chinese naming convention is usually [surname-given name]

an overwhelming majority of surnames are single character surnames, with about less than 5% of surnames being compound surnames (the surname is a compound word usually associated with noble rank or is non-Han Chinese e.g Mongolian/Bhutanese surnames) or double-barelled surnames (when you mash two existing surnames together) How can you tell what's a surname or not? idk man, if it is, it is. You can check wikipedia for the top 100 chinese surnames but otherwise you're on your own. Note: common chinese surnames are a lot more common than anglophone surnames relative to population (there's gonna be a lot more Lee, Wang & Zhangs relative to population than Smith, Jones & Taylors).

Chinese Given Names depend on region:

Anecdotally Single Given Names are more common in Mainland China/Taiwan/Shanghai while most of the South East Asian diaspora usually go for double given names. It's kind of reflected in how the Dislyte team (who are based in Shanghai) name the espers, with a majority having only single surname-given name combos.

Double Given Names usually have similar middle or last characters for siblings or cousins to identify generation, though it's not always the case, this is usually in reference to their Jia Pu (Note: Jia Pu 家谱 or Chinese Geneaological Record, a lot of families still have theirs in one form or another). It depends on personal preference/local culture how double given names are written in English, rule of thumb is clarity so Xie Chuyi, Xie Chu-Yi etc are perfectly acceptable.

that being said, the whole reason i wrote this post is cause amongst the non-chinese Espers, some of their sino-nized names are perfectly serviceable chinese names that follows chinese naming conventions, like Biondina 翁迪娜， Djoser左塞尔 and Lewis 刘易斯. It's funny cause Liu 刘 (unlike 翁 and 左) is the 4th most common chinese surname.

TL;DR so im proposing that Tang Xuan and Li Ling take Lewis' surname when they get married to become Liu-Tang Xuan and Liu-Li Ling

I'm bored so I'm starting a Tumblr polling tournament to determine the ultimate fighting game character!

I chose eight trademark fighters from the eight most popular fighting game series.

Do note that these are not my personal favourite characters, just eight characters I think represent their respective franchises well enough so recurring characters who have appeared in most of their respective series' games were obviously favoured compared to more recent additions that may still be popular and well loved enough.

1.     Vì sao phải rửa tiền chứ không mua trực tiếp? Vì các giao dịch hàng ngày như mua máy tính, điện thoại, lên bar không tốn nhiều tiền như vậy. Ai mà có tiền bẩn thì bản thân phần tiền sạch họ kiếm đã đủ trang trải cho cuộc sống hàng ngày rồi. 2.     Việc sử dụng giải độc đắc xổ số để rửa tiền như trên bắt nguồn từ việc công nghệ trước đây chưa đủ để quản lý tất cả các giao dịch của tất cả tài khoản của mọi người. Cuộc sống độc thân ở trọ một mình của mình bây giờ cũng thú vị mà.

Một tuần làm việc đầy mệt mỏi và rút cạn năng lượng, ngày chủ nhật sáng dự định là ngủ nướng cho khét lẹt đến trưa, nhưng cuộc đời là hai chữ ĐM, 6h30p mắt mở sáng không ngủ thêm được, quen giờ thức????. Tắm rửa giặt giũ xong lao dọn nhà tắm, rồi lại hì hục hí hoái lau cái phòng trọ bé tí. Chả ai nhắn tin, cũng không biết làm gì, chọn cái váy mình thích mặc nhất, xỏ đôi giày và đeo cái balo nhỏ đón xe bus đi siêu thị lượn lờ mấy quầy kệ mỹ phẩm. Cũng đẩy cái xe to to chứ trong xe đựng có mấy miếng mash, chai sữa rửa mặt, mấy chai nước ngọt... Lượn đến quầy hoa cây cảnh đứng ngó, ngắm mãi hết chậu cây này đến chậu cây kia, đọc tên hoa này hoa nọ, mãi chẳng chán. Hôm nay chủ nhật mọi người đi chơi, mua sắm đông lắm, đa số đi cặp, đi đôi, mình cũng chạnh lòng, nhưng thôi, kím gì ăn, cũng trưa rồi í. Ngồi ăn uống nhìn mọi người mình tự hỏi, mình như thế này nữa đến được bao giờ, rồi mình sẽ làm được gì thời gian sắp tới, liệu mình có gục ngã chìm xuống không?...

Mình cứ lượn lờ ở trong Siêu thị đến 1h45p, mình đi cả buổi sáng và sang trưa, nhưng chẳng có ai tìm mình, cũng không sao. Đi chơi một mình, đi ăn một mình, đi làm một mình, cuộc sống tự do tự tại này mình chọn mà... :(
