September

This far north, the harvest happens late. Rooks go clattering over the sycamores whose shadows yawn after them, down to the river. Uncut wheat staggers under its own weight.

Summer is leaving too, exchanging its gold for brass and copper. It is not so strange to feel nostalgia for the present; already this September evening is as old

as a photograph of itself. The light, the shadows on the field, are sepia, as if this were some other evening in September, some other harvest that went ungathered years ago.

Dorothy Lawrenson writes: Landscape is the ostensible subject-matter for a lot of my work, whether visual art or poetry. For some time I had been wanting to write about that end-of-summer-but-not-quite-autumn time of year. So when my weekly poetry class was given the task of writing something using the passive voice, without the use of the word ‘I’, the subject was to hand and this poem was ready to be written.

Pride Month Movie 14: Runs in the Family

This 2022 South African film directed by Ian Gabriel has A Lot going on. An Indian former con man travels with his trans son across South Africa to collect his son's mother from rehab. I don't want to give too much of the plot away, because it is unhinged, but the ending is both surprising and satisfying. The most interesting part is the relationship between father Varun (Ace Bhatti) and son River (Gabe Gabriel, who also wrote the film). Varun is very enthusiastic and supportive of his son, if sometimes in a "he a little confused but he got the spirit" kind of way.

River claims he is going on this trip for Varun, but the actual bulk of the story is about what Varun has done and continues to do for River. Honestly, is a little self-absorbed at some points, and early on I thought this was a flaw in the writing. But halfway through the movie a woman named Christine (Kathleen Stephens) gives the two a ride to the clinic, and she comments on the same dynamic I noticed between them. River is young and has the high aspirations and vulnerabilities that come with youth, and sometimes even the most supportive of parents can bear the brunt of that. Christine's scenes, and he arrival of River's mother, Monica (Diaan Lawrenson) bring out a depth and nuance in the main characters that is is not present in their early scenes. This is a rare film where the middle is the most interesting part.

I will say that the ending is convoluted. I think I could understand it better on rewatch, but for a movie billed as an adventure comedy, that's a little off-putting. The ending also feels a bit rushed; pacing is an issue throughout. Still, this was a fun and heartwarming father and son movie, and I do recommend it on that score. It would be a good one to watch on Father's Day, but I have another pic for that day, and it will likely be my favorite film from this month. It also happens to be my favorite film of all time!
