An open letter to the U.S. Congress
Pass the Democracy Restoration Act, (S. 1677 / HR 4987)!
768 so far! Help us get to 1,000 signers!
As a voter and your constituent, I’m urging you and your colleagues to cosponsor the Democracy Restoration Act, (S. 1677 / HR 4987) which would restore voting rights in federal elections to people that have been released from incarceration and are back living in their communities. In every election since 2000, nearly 5 million Americans have been disenfranchised by state laws that prevent people with felony convictions from voting. An even greater number don’t vote because they mistakenly think their voting rights have been stripped away as a result of conflicting and confusing state laws. The result is that millions of Americans have no say in the policies that affect them and their families. It's up to you to change that. Our democracy is stronger when everyone has a voice, and people who have completed their prison sentences are no exception. I'm urging you to stand up for the right for formerly incarcerated Americans to vote by cosponsoring the Democracy Restoration Act. Thanks.

Local TV Licenses Set for Decade Renewal

A New Era for Local TV In an era where digital platforms and global networks dominate the media landscape, the UK government has taken a decisive step to ensure that local television does not get left behind. With the decision to extend the broadcasting licences for 34 local TV stations for the next ten years, the future of regional broadcasting looks brighter than ever. The Importance of Local TV Local TV stations, from London Live to Notts TV, have become cornerstones of regional news, offering a unique blend of local programming that caters specifically to the interests and needs of their respective audiences. Beyond news, these stations play a crucial role in fostering community pride, delivering local insights, and providing invaluable training for aspiring journalists. Government's Commitment Following a thorough public consultation, the government confirmed its plans to renew the individual local TV licences until 2034. This move is contingent on each station demonstrating to Ofcom, the media regulator, their ability to maintain current service levels and meet the evolving needs of local audiences for the forthcoming decade. Renewal Process and Ofcom's Role Under the new guidelines, Ofcom will meticulously review each station's long-term strategy to ensure they can continue producing relevant and distinctive shows. Stations that secure Ofcom's approval will not only retain their licence but also enjoy a prominent spot in regulated electronic TV guides, like Freeview. This process underscores the government's and Ofcom's commitment to preserving the integrity and vitality of local TV broadcasting. The Multiplex Licence The renewal plans extend beyond individual stations to include the local TV multiplex licence. Additionally, this technical yet critical aspect ensures that local TV services are bundled efficiently and transmitted digitally, keeping them accessible to viewers free-to-air. Furthermore, this strategic move underscores the government's holistic approach to safeguarding the future of local TV. The Role of Local TV in the Community Local TV serves as more than just a source of news and entertainment. It is a platform for social engagement, local journalism, and community development. Media Minister Julia Lopez highlighted the enduring value of local TV, stressing its role in delivering trusted news, supporting local journalism, and nurturing community spirit. Legislative Path Forward The government's strategy includes moving forward with secondary legislation to facilitate these changes. In doing so, they aim to complete the Ofcom-led renewal process by year-end. This legislative effort reflects a clear and structured plan, ensuring that local TV stations have a robust framework to continue serving their communities effectively. The Future of Local TV As technology evolves and viewing habits shift, the preservation and promotion of local TV are more critical than ever. This renewal initiative not only secures the future of local TV for the next decade but also reaffirms the importance of regional content in the national media landscape. A Vital Step for Regional Broadcasting The government's decision to renew local TV licences is a testament to the enduring value of regional broadcasting. Moreover, by supporting local journalism, enhancing community engagement, and ensuring the continued delivery of distinct local programming, this initiative promises to keep local TV relevant and vibrant in the digital age. Furthermore, it's a clear signal that in the ever-changing media world, local TV remains an indispensable part of the UK's cultural and journalistic fabric.
