An open letter to the President & U.S. Congress
Stop trying to defund the DOJ antitrust division!
843 so far! Help us get to 1,000 signers!
I’m writing to urge you to provide enforcement agencies with the resources they need to rein in corporate lawbreaking. Alongside the FTC, the Department of Justice Antitrust Division plays a critical role in holding illegal, monopolistic behavior accountable. Despite this important responsibility, the Division has long been deprived of the resources it needs to police anti-competitive behavior. This is why I am alarmed by proposed appropriations language released this week that would unravel the Merger Filing Fee Modernization Act enacted by Congress in 2022. I am adamantly opposed to this and all efforts to undermine the Division’s budget and urge all parties in negotiations to restore the Division’s full access to merger filing fees. While Congress has made little progress on antitrust priorities in recent years, the passage of the Merger Filing Fees Modernization Act was a bright spot and represented an important bipartisan success in supporting antitrust policy and enforcement. And it was a welcome departure from recent decades, in which Congress failed to give the Antitrust Division adequate resources to combat monopolistic actors even as corporate concentration sharply increased. As noted by Jonathan Kanter, Assistant Attorney General for the Antitrust Division, the Division employed some 230 fewer staffers as of February 2023 than it had in 1979. Despite insufficient resources, the DOJ Antitrust Division has still worked tirelessly to rein in anti-competitive behavior across a variety of sectors, including airlines, publishing and the tech sector. At a time when American consumers are reeling from high prices, it should be a bipartisan priority to promote competition and prevent monopolistic behavior. American consumers need relief from unconstrained corporate concentration, and it would be a major mistake for Congress to roll back progress on reinvigorating antitrust enforcement. I once again urge the White House and congressional lawmakers to stand in opposition to the proposed appropriations text and accompanying conference report, and enhance funding for antitrust enforcers to do their jobs. Thanks.

How snake disrupts Ondo Assembly proceedings
Tumblr media
The Ondo State House of Assembly was on Thursday thrown into confusion as a live snake dropped from the roof of the chamber during plenary. The house presided over by the Speaker, Bamidele Oleyelogun, was about to commence legislative activities when noise from frightened lawmakers and the audience at the gallery sent everyone scampering for safety and ending the sitting. Reacting to the incident, the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Olugbenga Omole, expressed worry over the development and promised that the legislative building would soon be fumigated in order to avoid a recurrence. Omole, who said the snake did not bite anyone because of the quick intervention of some staff of the assembly, added that it was eventually killed and burnt. “Again, we were at the plenary when the ceiling caved in beside the speaker,” Omole said. “When we were about to enter into plenary, a big snake just ran out of the chamber which disrupted our sitting and we had to hurriedly leave the chamber “We are about to seat again today when a ceiling caved in directly where Mr. Speaker was sitting, the whole house was agitated and when we look around we saw the damage the termite had done to most of the woodwork in the ceiling. “At that point, we had to call ourselves and adjourned the sitting. That chamber is no longer safe for legislative business and because of that, we decided to adjourn indefinitely. The house will be going on an indefinite recess. “We need to intimate the state governor Rotimi Akeredolu about this development and we have decided to meet him on this. The chairman said proper fumigation would begin at the complex on Friday ahead of a general renovation. Read the full article

Dead Roaches
It is interesting that Pelosi can ear a copy of a speech in half and talk about 400 bills passed by the House and everyone forgets that she is a reactionary pro Government Powers Politician.   Please note that 115 Bills passed by the House had NO problem being introduced into the Senate and signed into law by the President.
McConnell and Pelosi have a great Abbot and Costello act going on, they have us believing they are at loggerheads while they carefully lay down exactly which bills T^ump wants to see and shepherd them straight through, then they stand up  do their WWE “Grudge Match”, and exit the arena.

An open letter to the U.S. Congress
Pass the Democracy Restoration Act, (S. 1677 / HR 4987)!
768 so far! Help us get to 1,000 signers!
As a voter and your constituent, I’m urging you and your colleagues to cosponsor the Democracy Restoration Act, (S. 1677 / HR 4987) which would restore voting rights in federal elections to people that have been released from incarceration and are back living in their communities. In every election since 2000, nearly 5 million Americans have been disenfranchised by state laws that prevent people with felony convictions from voting. An even greater number don’t vote because they mistakenly think their voting rights have been stripped away as a result of conflicting and confusing state laws. The result is that millions of Americans have no say in the policies that affect them and their families. It's up to you to change that. Our democracy is stronger when everyone has a voice, and people who have completed their prison sentences are no exception. I'm urging you to stand up for the right for formerly incarcerated Americans to vote by cosponsoring the Democracy Restoration Act. Thanks.

An open letter to the U.S. Senate
The Senate must not pass the TikTok “ban” bill!
2,544 so far! Help us get to 3,000 signers!
I strongly oppose the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, a bill that could ban TikTok in the US. First, it violates our free speech. Second, it targets one social media company over others that have the exact same issues. A better way to safeguard our data would be to create comprehensive consumer-privacy laws that would require apps like TikTok, as well as American companies like Facebook, to face more restrictions on how they handle user data. If the Senator supports this bill they will lose my vote. Thanks.

An open letter to the U.S. Congress
Authorize at least 20K more Special Immigrant Visas for our Afghan allies!
224 so far! Help us get to 250 signers!
I’m writing to ask Congress to immediately authorize at least 20,000 more Afghan Special Immigrant Visas as part of the must-pass spending bills being worked on right now. America’s messy exit from Afghanistan in 2021 created an urgent moral need: Ensuring that we were not abandoning the Afghan allies who had helped U.S. forces during the two-decade war to slaughter at the hands of the triumphant Taliban. The Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program, which Congress enacted under the Afghan Allies Protection Act of 2009, provides a path to the United States for Afghans who worked with the U.S. government for at least one year. But the program has a hard statutory cap. Congress has authorized the issuance of 38,500 visas; of those, only 8,000 slots remain. Yet 130,000 applications still need to be processed, and more applications come in daily. At the current pace, the government estimates that limit will be hit by August. Given the gridlocked state of Congress, the pending round of must-pass spending legislation may prove the only viable vehicle to raise that cap in time. Please use it! The Biden-Harris administration has repeatedly requested Congress authorize 20,000 more Afghan SIVs to stand with those who stood alongside our troops, diplomats, and development professionals during 20 years of war in Afghanistan. We are on track to use all remaining visa numbers this Fiscal Year and need Congress to act. The SIV program enjoys 89 percent support from the American public, and 75 percent of Republicans support it. More importantly, it’s the right thing to do. Please listen to Americans across political parties and authorize these additional visas now!

An open letter to the U.S. Senate
Pass S.3548 - the Health Care Prices Transparency Act!
1,036 so far! Help us get to 2,000 signers!
I strongly urge you to prioritize and pass S.3548 - the Health Care Prices Revealed and Information to Consumers Explained Transparency Act, to end over-charging for health care and to give Americans clear hospital prices. For too long, people like me haven't been able to get an upfront accurate price for the health care services we need. With health care prices rising, we are shouldering more of the cost out of our own pockets. So it's more important than ever to be able to find clear prices in dollars and cents. Two years ago hospitals were required to list their prices, but too many posted them in hard-to-understand formulas and using complicated digital files. We need hospital prices in dollars and cents rather than unreliable estimates or hard-to-use formulas. We need to have clear pricing for health care treatments before we receive them. Please vote to require hospital price transparency to improve competitive pricing between facilities, and to institute site-neutral payments to eliminate unnecessary over-charges in doctor's offices. The House has already passed health care price transparency legislation—it’s time for the Senate to do their part. Thanks.

An open letter to the U.S. Congress
Pass the Break the Cycle of Violence Act (H.R 5003/S. 2638)!
783 so far! Help us get to 1,000 signers!
Every 11 minutes, someone’s life is lost to gun violence in the United States. In an average year, this public health crisis claims more than 40,000 lives and wounds twice as many. For the lives lost and the loved ones left behind, there is no way to capture the true cost of this epidemic, but every year, the United States chooses to spend $557 billion on the consequences of gun violence rather than stopping it before it happens. Gun violence is not normal, and Americans do not need to accept it as such. We have the tools, strategies, and people to prevent these daily tragedies, but for too long, the federal government has dramatically underspent on proven community-based programs that address the root causes of gun violence, while allocating billions of dollars to reactive interventions that have historically failed to keep Americans safe. The status quo isn’t working. That’s why we need the Break the Cycle of Violence Act (H.R 5003/S. 2638). The Break the Cycle of Violence Act would provide $5 billion in federal grants for community violence intervention programs and $1.5 billion in workforce initiatives that are proven to reduce gun violence. These programs make communities safer by investing directly in the people and communities most affected to stop gun violence before it happens. Grants funded by the Break the Cycle of Violence Act will support local programs that use proven strategies to reduce community violence without contributing to mass incarceration. Communities that have invested in these interventions have seen reductions in gun homicides by as much as 60 percent, saving taxpayers up to $41 in emergency services for each dollar spent. These much-needed resources will also expand economic opportunity to communities grappling with trauma, systemic neglect, divestment, and long-standing hardships.

📨 An open letter to the U.S. Congress
⚖️ Fix the Insurrection Act so that no President can abuse it
✍️ 1,130 so far! Help us get to 2,000 signers!
I’m deeply concerned about the potential abuse of the Insurrection Act, especially if Donald Trump regains the Presidency. He has indicated he plans to do just that, and it’s crucial that Congress act now to fix the law.
Utah Senator Mike Lee introduced an amendment in 2021 that would have limited a president’s ability to declare insurrection. It would restrict proclamations to 30 days unless Congress approved an extension, with a maximum of one year. This is a great step!
Additionally, the law needs to be reformed to clarify what constitutes an insurrection and tighten the definition of a militia. Right now, the law is vague and open to manipulation.
Please take immediate action to ensure that no President can abuse this outdated law for their own purposes.

An open letter to the U.S. House of Representatives
It’s time for Supreme Court term limits!
408 so far! Help us get to 500 signers!
I’m writing as your constituent to urge you to cosponsor the Supreme Court Tenure Establishment and Retirement Modernization Act of 2023 (H.R. 5566, TERM Act), re-introduced by Rep. Hank Johnson. The United States is the only major constitutional democracy in the world that doesn’t have term limits for our top justices. It’s a flaw in our system that must be corrected. Rep. Johnson’s TERM Act would introduce fixed 18-year terms for current and future Supreme Court justices and establish regular nominations of justices in the first and third years of each presidential term as the sole means of Supreme Court appointments. This reform is supported by 7 in 10 voters, including myself, and would put an end to the partisanship that surrounds Supreme Court vacancies, and return the Court to a body that is representative of the values of the American people. Help restore trust in America’s highest court by cosponsoring the TERM Act! Thanks.
