Film after film: Ghosts of Mars (dir. John Carpenter, 2001)

I remembered it as a slog, but this time I really enjoyed this late Carpenter. I am more of a fan of the idea of being Carpenter's fan than I am his fan: I've never really fully engaged with any of his films. This one is entertaining mostly thanks to finely-tuned acting from the "Martian police unit," especially Grier, Cassidy (who squeezes in her signature laughter), and DuVall, as well as Henstridge, who is a good lead, surprisingly, maybe, given her signature starring role in Species. There are some funnily outdated visual touches: a Power-Point-presentation-like screen change, slow-motion overlays of images, and a red filter signifying the presence of the titular ghosts. The reveal of Kingi's and Lupo's characters ("they used to be miners"), with the ritual of cutting heads off and impaling them on super-fake-looking sticks, makes for a great campy moment.

Léna n'est pas une jeune fille comme les autres. Elle est la fille de la Reine Juliette Finz d'Acosta et du Roi Philip Finz d'Acosta. Depuis des générations, sa famille incarne la royauté de ce pays. Depuis le décès de ses parents, Léna se retrouve orpheline. Elle est sur le point de devenir Reine depuis que ses parents sont morts dans un accident de voiture. Enfin... Accident c'est ce qu'ils disent. La Princesse refuse le titre de reine, car elle refuse de prendre la place de sa mère dont elle n'arrive pas à faire son deuil. Son tuteur légal est son major d'homme qui la protège et s'assure de son bien-être. 

Cependant, Léna, en refusant de se faire couronner malgré son devoir, risque de se faire remplacer et pas nécessairement par une bonne personne. En plus de se battre pour sa liberté qu'on lui refuse. Léna veut découvrir ce qui est vraiment arrivé à ses parents. Cependant, voilà, la jeune femme découvre avec le temps que sa famille est loin d'être celle qu'elle connaissait et y trouve de nombreux ennemis inconnus. 

Au fond d'elle, la jeune Léna veut trouver une vie normale. Sortant le soir en douce pour découvrir la liberté, elle essaye cependant de rester la plus discrète possible, troquant ses belles tenues par un simple pantalon et un pull à capuche. Si on venait à reconnaître la Princesse en ville, rien ne pourrait garantir sa sécurité et surtout, mettre probablement un certain nombre de personnes en danger. Cependant, son rêve et ses désirs sont de découvrir le monde normal, loin des bons hommes bien placés. 

Je ne précise pas la ville dans laquelle elle habite pour faciliter les jeux. Cependant, elle se joue bien à l'époque d'aujourd'hui et non pour des jeux médiévaux. 

Je ne fais aucun jeu avec le contexte surnaturel pour Léna inutile de demander. Pour ce qui est arrivé à ses parents, je laisse le choix, un membre de la famille éloigné pour que leurs enfants prennent la place de Léna sur le trône ou simplement des gens pas recommandable comme la mafia par exemple qui aurait voulu faire un coup dur peu importe tant que l'idée est originale. La cause de décès n'est pas obligée d'être la même dans tous mes jeux. 

Côté caractère rien de bien particuliers à signaler. Elle est plutôt du genre naïf. Elle croit en l'amour bien que sa condition ne lui permet pas d'aimer n'importe qui. Sensible et attachante, elle est également d'une grande curiosité et à soif de vérité. Surtout en ce qui concerne l'accident qui est arrivé à ses parents. Elle sait que c'est quelqu'un à qui on peut souhaiter le mal et qui peut rapporter beaucoup d'argents, mais pourtant, elle n'hésite pas à se mettre en danger pour découvrir la vérité.

Eleanor is the third child and only daughter of King Simon and Queen Helena. Her older brother, Robert is three years older than her and her twin brother, Liam. Growing up, she was cherished by her older brother, Robert, and she looked up to him. The twins were always close to each other and looked out for one another when they were young. And, though her relationship with her father was good, her relationship with her mother was contentious to say the least.

As the third child, Eleanor never had the pressure of the throne on her shoulders, so, she was the wild child of the family: partying, drinking, and indulging in more illicit substances. She had a reputation and she played up to it brilliantly.

After Robert was killed in action, she spiraled in her grief and guilt over having been partying when she was meant to call him. This led her to be in a position of being blackmailed by someone who became her bodyguard. He used her to get what he wanted from her, and manipulated her into thinking he genuinely cared.

Unfortunately, it wasn't long after Robert died that her father, the king, was murdered, leaving Liam to become king sooner than any of them expected. This left Eleanor more alone than ever.
