It's been a while since I've posted anything, but I finally got around to planting my 40 gallon! The last of the plants came in today and immediately went in~
The Amazon swords from my 40 gallon long moved into this tank, they were stopping my angelfish from moving around the tank freely so I needed to make room for him.
There's some limnophila sessiliflora clippings from my other tanks in here in the back right corner, then a nice bunch of anubias that I also moved from my 40 gallon long.
I wanted the bottom to look natural so I used a bunch of different sizes of rocks and pebbles collected from the beach. Planted amongst the rocks are some dwarf sagittaria and lilaeopsis brasiliensis that im hoping will carpet inbetween the rocks. There are also a couple of red tiger lotus as well as some cryptocoryne wendtii planted here and there.
On the left side I have some Java fern and another little clump of anubias. Both were in my 10 gallon which has a BBA outbreak, but the siamese algea eater in here is cleaning them off nicely. They were much worse!
Then finally along the back from left to right, there is a small bunch of rotala rotundifolia, next to that in the middle is vallisneria asiatica. Beside that is a couple cuttings of bacopa, then just beside that peeking out of behind the rock is a small bunch of ludwigia palustris 'super red'. Just in front of the bacopa I have the very last clipping of water wisteria I own. Hoping it'll come back so I can have more of it again. The limnophila shaded it out and killed almost all of it off in my other tank unfortunately.
As for livestock at the moment there is a siamese algae eater, a gold barb, a cherry barb, a zebra danio, about 10 endlers, and about 10 ramshorn snails. The barbs and the danio were given to me by someone who didn't want their aquarium anymore, that's why they're not in proper groups. I plan on getting more fish for this tank but I'm going to wait for the plants to grow in more. I'm thinking smaller nano fish like furcata rainbows or CPDs. Also planning on getting some honey gourami for this tank at some point~
Also the wood that's floating is going to be incorporated into the scape once it sinks!

After that story I simply must hear more about Slice and Hickory. (please?) Also, could I hear more about this Lilaeopsis whom Slice was bellowing for? Thank you!
But of course! (Especially since I wouldn’t have Hickory or Lilae without you :D)
In order of request!
Slice:
1) Slice is the first son born to his parents who really, really wanted strong offspring to carry on their line. 1a) Slice isn’t an only child. 1b) Slice has only one sibling who wasn’t sent to serve the Plaguebringer.2) Despite being born in the Shifting Expanse, Slice’s parents were very devout Plague dragons and he was raised in the Wasteland to worship and revere the Plaguebringer.3) Slice is kind of a giant ass who acts like a hatchling even though he’s not. (Most of his arguments come down to slightly more sophisticated versions of NU-UH! And no, he is not above name calling.) And like most ill behaved, poorly socialized, terribly adjusted hatchlings, the more shit Slice gives you, the more he probably likes you. (Slice heartily disagrees with this assessment, both in that he’s “More mature than anyone! Not like a hatchling at all! Hatchlings are dumb, so dumb!” and “IF ‘M GIVIN’ SOMEONE A HARD TIME SCAUSE THEY SUCK AND DESERVE IT!”) Bonus Fact! Slice is not literally the worst, but he’s a pretty close second.
Hickory:
1) No one has actually ever heard Hickory speak. He does vocalize, but not in any form that resembles words. Hickory can produce a deep thrumming bellow (alligator bellow) that travels well underwater. (Lilae and Strigops know why he does this. No one else in the clan does.) 1a) Yes, when Hickory bellows the water around him ripples and jumps and if his back is close enough to the surface, the water over his back “dances”. (Alligator bellows are seriously cool.)2) Hickory has double rows of very sharp, serrated teeth. 2a) His canine teeth are not doubled on the top or bottom. Instead they’re long and curved like a cobra’s. 2b) Hickory sheds and regrows his teeth like a shark. 3) Those antlers aren’t decorative and they don’t come off…mostly because they’re part of his skull. (Hickory does not approve of people tugging on his antlers to see if they’re real. Tugging on his antlers is very, very ill advised because of fact #2.)Bonus Fact! Hickory loves chin scratchies.
Lilaeopsis:
1) Unlike Slice and Hickory, Lilae wasn’t born in Harbor Home. She came from Twisted Trees (thank you!) to find her sister who had previously gone to join the clan. 1a) By the time she reached the clan in the Wastelands, her sister Helianthus had already gone to serve the Plaguebringer. Or so Mother told her. 1b) No one knows for certain if Helianthusand her mate, Joro, actually went to join the Plaguebringer. There was some cagey behavior from the council who used to rule the clan as far as the subject of Helianthuswent.2) Lilae has the same canine fangs as Hickory, cobra like, but the rest of her teeth are small and pointed like little needles. (And by little I mean cute, not diminutive. Her teeth would be about the same bore as the needles used for taking blood donations. She, however, does not use her teeth for taking blood donations.) 2a) Lilae does regrow lost teeth, but she does not regularly shed her teeth. She only sheds her teeth if they’re damaged. 3) Lilae spends a great deal of time floating through the swamp. With her arms and legs dangling down under the water and her wings spread flat, she’s hard to see. At first glance, it’s easy to mistake her for a floating log, if you see her at all. She’s very well camouflaged. 3a) Lilae isn’t being lazy. She is one of the clan’s hunter/gatherers. She catches fish, insects, and even birds by being still and being almost invisible. She also digs up underwater roots with her little busy feet.Bonus Fact! Lilae is getting an almost complete regene. This is not ‘canon’. Lorewise, she has always been Jaguar/Striation.
There are scars on Hickory’s jaw, along his muzzle, across his face. Dragons who came to the clan after the exodus from the Wasteland assume these scars are from battle, hunting, Hickory’s own confrontational and unpredictable nature. The dragons who came with the clan from the Wasteland know better, but they don’t speak of it. Once, Slice started to correct the assumptions of a newcomer. He did not finish his explanation.
Lilaeopsis did not allow him to.
It is a forbidden topic. She is as immovable as a mountain when it comes to discussing where Hickory’s scars came from. The rule is simple. The rule is absolute. We do not speak of Hickory’s scars. There is a second rule, one more easily observed thanks to Hickory’s own nature. We do not mention Hickory’s scars to him. In general, most of the clan does not mention anything to Hickory, but in the past, when some unknowing newcomer who had not yet learned the rules has mentioned the scars to Hickory, the result has always been the same.
For days, no one will see him. For days, he will be a ghost.
Eventually, he will return. Eventually. And by the time he does, the newcomer will know the rules.
We do not speak of Hickory’s scars. We do not mention Hickory’s scars to him.
But not speaking of it does not remove the scars, nor does it make any of the Wastelanders forget where they came from. Nor does it prevent the newcomers from wondering. Lilaeopsis cannot control those things, no matter how she might wish to. Were it up to her, were it in her power, she would take those scars from Hickory, both the ones seen and the ones unseen. But it isn’t in her power. And it never will be.

some of my Ideas were on offer in my local online very friendly aquascaping shop, and since my filter is almost done cycling and i can soon go back to the pet store and hope they’ve got another betta for me, i jumped right in
*NOTE: This was for a picture, it is not a suitable home for live fish!
I thought this would make for a bit of a fancy photo op, but the medaka disgreed and decided to be shockingly hard to photograph.
But the indoor pond pots are coming along nicely, the lilaeopsis has really taken to the lava rock and I’m hoping it’ll send up some runners soon! The duckweed exploded in population pretty much the day after it was added, so hopefully it’ll work as a ready supply to treat the goldfish with!
The medaka are really spectacular, you can literally see them from across the room, their back stripe is so bright! Hopefully they’ll enjoy their actual home in the garden.
Hi there could you please tell me what the "grass" plant in your ranchu tank is? I've been trying to get a similar look for my Ryukins for ages but they keep eating my experiments! It seems like your fish ignore your plants enough that it doesn't all get eaten, would like to try it on my fish. Thanks :)
Hello 😊The plant is called Lilaeopsis brasiliens. It needs good light to grow. I hope it can grow with your fish. I had luck my fish do not eat the plants
sometimes on fish forums the posters will wish each other well by saying something like "keep your sleeves wet" because sometimes you have to reach into the tank to adjust things and also just generally water. I'd never gotten my sleeve wet until this morning, a little piece of lilaeopsis that I moved yesterday floated up from the substrate, so i pushed up my sleeve and replanted it. I must have not pushed it up far enough though because for the first time I got my sleeve wet and I feel like I'm Part of Something now
Well I tore down the old tank and set up this one. See what I mean about crazy silicone colours lol
It took me a while to catch all the fish and separate the males that were close to being mature. There were only 4 males out of the bunch the rest are all little ladies.
But yeah, I can't wait for this tank to fill in! Especially the vallisneria asiatica at the back. There is also a small portion of lilaeopsis brasiliensis that I'm hoping will fill in between the dwarf sag and give a varied texture. We shall see how it all goes!
