When Spider-Man hits, it hits (issues 29-33)

We start with some meh issues, and work our way up to one of the best Spider-Man issues yet (if not the best outright).

‘“Never Step on a Scorpion!” or… “You think it’s easy to dream up titles like this?”’ is one of the issues of all time. There’s nothing too novel to talk about here, aside from the full title and the upside-down speech balloon on page 10. Scorpion still looks ugly as sin with his thick worm tail and derpy face mask.

“The Claws of the Cat!” has an adorable inner cover rendition of its title. Hiss! It’s also got some fun interactions with the rest of the Spidey cast, which we will discuss in lieu of the plot.

Flash might actually be a meathead. This is like the third time Peter’s laid him out in one hit, and I don’t think he learns. Maybe Peter is giving him brain trauma.

After many issues of limping along in a progressively worse, less interesting state, Betty x Peter meets its end.

That’s tragic, it is. We’re well past the point where regular goons can threaten Spidey, so now I just kind of feel sad for them.

As a standalone issue, “If This Be My Destiny…!” doesn’t work. It ostensibly introduces Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborn to the Spider-Man mythos, but if you asked me to tell you anything about their characters I’d only be able to respond with an “uh” and a “hm” and a couple more verbal pauses. The plot is also kind of tired: Peter is in college but learns that Aunt May is ailing, she’s in the hospital for an unspecified dire condition and Peter can’t make money, so he’s too stressed to make any friends in college. Also, Peter fights some nameless SCUBA-equipped nuclear tech robbers who fight with sleep gas.

Two notes of interest:

Although the “Peter worries over Aunt May’s ailing state” plots are getting stale, at least we get this really nice art to capture Peter’s stress.

Peter majored in science, lmao. Y’know how it is.

NOW we get to the juice.

(Spider-)“Man on a Rampage!” takes the setup of the prior issue and improves remarkably - most importantly by turning Aunt May’s illness from chance kismet to a source of guilt/motivation for Peter. He steals her blood sample and tracks down Dr. Connors (the scientist he saved from being irreversibly transformed into the Lizard by his own experimental tissue regeneration treatments) to help.

Spider-Man and Dr. Connors work on the treatment, but require a radioactive element from a lab across the country… and coincidentally, our SCUBA robbers are targeting radioactive tech, so it gets intercepted by them.

Pressed for time, Peter approaches J.Jonah Jameson’s underworld mole Frederick Foswell for help, as well as roughs up every gang hideout he can find in the vain hopes one of them knows where the SCUBA robbers are hanging out. Once he inadvertently discovers the hideout himself, he bowls over the robbers and meets their master, who turns out to be Doc Octopus. They fight, Spidey is so furious it scares Doc Ock, and he’s also so careless he ends up demolishing the load-bearing pillars of the underwater hideout.

See, this is the kind of Parker Luck I like. Random bad events happen to him and make him have a bad day, whatever. This is entirely his own doing. Even though it made perfect sense for him to give Aunt May a blood transfusion issues and issues ago, even though it made perfect sense for him to rage recklessly at the thieves of the ISO-36 he and Dr. Connors need to save her life - sometimes the right moves are still the wrong ones. What greater exhibition of flawed humanity and realistic struggle? What greater challenge to overcome aw fuck I’m starting to talk like Stan Lee now

“The FINAL CHAPTER!” is an iconic issue. At the end of last issue, I was thinking “wait, is this the thing Tom Holland’s rubble-lifting scene in his first Spider-Man movie is homaging?”, so I went and looked it up. Yes, yes it is.

It takes him four pages to lift it off himself, to build the tension, to introduce the slowness and agony of the lift into an ordinarily non-temporal medium, and to express Spider-Man’s character in truest fashion. As loathe as I am to do this, I think there isn’t any way to recap the lift that doesn’t cause the mojo to leak out, so:

Peter gets another can’t quit, won’t quit moment later while fighting Doc Ock’s goons, but the above sequence is the better exhibition of what makes him him by far. Peter helps brew the cure to Aunt May’s condition and delivers it, you know how that goes. He then also helps Foswell out by giving him the credit for the bust, manages to finally get Betty to lose romantic interest in him so she’s free to date Ned, and negotiates a hard price with Jameson for pictures to keep the Parker household solvent.

The biangles were designed by activist Liz Nania in 1985 in order to represent bisexual pride. Using a pink triangle to represent homosexuality, a blue triangle to represent heterosexuality, and a purple overlap to represent queerness. I hate when Peter and Mary Jane's relationship is reduced to "nerd got the hot girl". It shows that even though I have a special place in my heart for the Raimi films (they are what got me into Peter Parker before the comics); they have, in some ways even more than the MCU, have done damage to the public perception of Peter Parker in being viewed as a white nerd power fantasy. What are your thoughts, Traincat?

On the one hand, I understand why the Raimi films made the choices they did with Peter and MJ's characterization and relationship. I'm not the world's biggest fan of the Raimi movies (I think they're fine, they just don't really do anything for me) but I can recognize that they're well put together and tell a coherent, complete story -- and to do that with Spider-Man required a certain amount of compressing. Spider-Man comics are a soap opera; they're a sprawling story with a huge cast and interweaving plotlines and relationships. You can't really do that in a two hour movie, so you have to make cuts somewhere. And I do think Raimi did a really good job presenting his version of Spider-Man, and obviously it resonated with a lot of people. It's just not my version of Spider-Man, and the simplification of both Peter and Mary Jane as characters and of their dynamic is a big part of that.

For example, I understand the decision to make both Peter and the audience immediately aware of MJ's abusive home life, but I don't find it as compelling as the comics, where Mary Jane, like Peter, wears a mask -- she's the fun-loving party girl without a care in the world, and Peter falls for it entirely. Meanwhile, Peter thinks he's getting away with everything and that no one knows he's Spider-Man, but Mary Jane discovered it years ago, before Peter even knew who she was, and she hid that information from him for years.

Mary Jane's an inversion of the "girl next door." She doesn't even really live next door! Her aunt lives next door; MJ ran away from home (if you can call having to constantly move between relatives home) and slept at the Y so she'd have money for eyeliner. Initially, Peter doesn't even want to meet her because he thinks she'll be ugly -- Aunt May told him she had a "great personality," after all. (Kill him.) Also, unlike Raimi's Peter, 616 Peter already has a love life. He falls head over heels for JJJ's pretty secretary, Betty Brant, and she reciprocates, while his blonde rich girl classmate Liz Allan also schemes to get Peter's attention all for herself. (Spider-Man! It's love triangles all the way down.) Johnny Storm's girlfriend at the time, Dorrie Evans, also thinks Peter is cute and smart, and once he gets to college, Peter and Gwen Stacy almost immediately begin a mildly antagonistic mutual attraction. So it's not like he's lived next to MJ all his life and he's been in love with her the whole time, this unattainable beautiful girl to his sad nerd. 616 Peter has girls fighting over him.

So that there's already a romantic history is very important, I think -- MJ isn't Peter's first love, and in a way that grounds the relationship. He's even put off by her at first, after his initial attraction. She's beautiful and vivacious, but he finds her flighty, and he's more invested in Gwen because of that. (Hate that I have to say this but I'm not interested in discussing whether MJ or Gwen is "better" for Peter. I ship both, as well as GwenMJ, and I think they're both interesting and compelling.)

(ASM #96 and #97) He finds the fact that she flirts with him while she's also seeing Harry to be actively off putting. It's not love at first sight for him. (It's, debatably, terror at first sight for her.)

(ASM #258) Unlike Raimi's depiction, it's not Spider-Man that holds the attraction for Mary Jane. She's not intrigued by the masked man who kisses her in the rain. Peter being Spider-Man terrifies her, and it's something she'll struggle with on and off throughout their relationship. One of the things I really love about 616 Spider-Man is that all the character relationships feel realistic. People get scared, they get messy, they hurt each other and apologize and run away and come back. Mary Jane's a traumatized person. She's had an abusive childhood, she's grieving, she's using this persona as a shield, and Peter falls for it, because Peter isn't looking beneath the exterior. He doesn't know how to do that with her yet. He has to learn.

(ASM #292) And so does Mary Jane, who keeps everything locked up so tightly inside of her. Incredibly funny sidenote: I cannot stress enough how much they were not in a serious relationship before Peter proposed the second time. They were not seriously dating and he just went "let's get married." I love it.

(And before some nerd yells at me, yes, they had previously been in a serious relationship, but they were not at the time of this proposal.)

And none of this is to say Raimi Peter and MJ are bad characters. They're just a different adaptation, for a wildly different form of media where brevity is needed, as opposed to the serialized nature of comics. Stuff that works in comics doesn't necessarily work in movies, and vice versa. But I do think the shift in format kind of allowed this idea of Peter the Nerd/MJ the Popular Girl to flourish in public consciousness, and that then evolved on itself. I don't think Raimi's entirely at fault so much as the tendency to see like, a vaguely schlubby or unassuming white guy (Raimi's styling choice on Peter) and a pretty girl and apply those labels to it. I also don't think the Raimi's more gentile approach to Peter helped, either. (It should be noted that, as goyish as his Peter comes off, Raimi himself is Jewish.)

I think the tendency that a lot of people have to use Peter as a self-insert is ultimately the problem, and that while the Raimi movies may be a gateway for a lot of young (and not so young) white nerds to do that, the tendency comes from within, it doesn't originate on the screen. "Peter Parker is an everyman" and "Peter Parker is just like you" combine with "I deserve to get with the hottest girl" and that becomes the problem. It always circles back to the fact that a lot of people, even people who proclaim themselves to be diehard Spider-Man fans, don't consider Peter to be an actual character, with well defined personality traits that they may not personally share. The same with Mary Jane -- she's Spider-Man's Love Interest, and Spider-Man's love interest just has to be a beautiful redheaded supermodel who is in love with him. She doesn't have to be a person with her own personality and backstory. And I find it hard to entirely blame Raimi for that because, even though they're not my picks for Peter and MJ characterization, those characters do have their own personalities and traits. Am I just blaming the fandom? I don't know, maybe. It's a complicated situation. When does a character get so famous that they stop being their own character? When do they become this image that fans can mold into whoever they want him to be? A sad average nerd power fantasy? A perpetual teenager, the Avengers baby? Something else? When does Spider-Man stop being Spider-Man?

It's something I think about a lot. I don't have a concrete answer.

Anyway, it's not really relevant, but as iconic as the upside down Spider-Man kiss has become, I personally prefer Peter and MJ's first kiss in the comics.

• Kid immediately noticed that something was wrong with you and took you out before you even entered.

• He will definitely take you home (There's no way he's taking you to Dr. Stein) and on the way he will scold you for coming to school sick, endangering yourself and others.

• "What if you fainted from exhaustion?" "Next, send your meister/weapon to me to tell me you're not feeling well." "You have a fever?!"

• But then he will apologize to you for scolding you, but he was just worried about you and didn't want anything to happen to you.

• I think Kid is even good at taking care of sick people, for example when Patty and Liz were sick (but has a softer spot for you and will be with you 24/7).

• If you have a fever you are dead. Kid will personally make sure you take your medications and eat well.

• Doesn't take no for an answer.

• Kid hates germs and diseases but for you he will try to help you.

• You'll end up wrapped like a burrito in a blanket.

Kid sat down in his seat and waited for class to start until he saw his girlfriend enter the classroom not looking too good. She had bags under her eyes, her hair was a mess and same her clothes. Kid quickly packed his things, knowing that he wouldn't come back to class after seeing your condition and moved towards you.

"Oh! Good morning-" You couldn't finish your sentence as Kid led you out of the classroom, the confusion visible on your face.

"You're sick, I'm taking you home." Kid took your bag so you wouldn't have to carry a heavy bag like this.

"But-" "No buts. What if something happened to you?"

"Then-" "Please, next time tell your meister/weapon to inform me about such things." Kid kept interrupting you, you wanted to punch him lightly so you could finally say something, but then he placed his hand on your forehead.

"You have a fever?!" Ah fuck.

It ended up that when you got to your house, you were sent to bed and he wrapped a blanket around you, making you a burrito. You thought that after he took you home he would go back to school, but surprisingly he stayed and went to the kitchen to make you food.

Later, he entered your room, in his left hand he held a plate with triangle-shaped sandwiches and in his right he held water and some pills.

"It's nothing special but at least you will have a full stomach, then take the pills, they should help you." Kid set the plate and water aside to help you sit up, even though you could have done it yourself. After eating, he went to take your plate to the kitchen, you felt like going to the bathroom so you got up and headed towards the bathroom but suddenly Kid appeared and scared you a little.

"What are you doing out of bed? Go back." He said as he tried to take you back to your room. You swear your little illness made this boy so soft but you didn't mind.

"I just wanted to go to the bathroom."

When you came back from the bathroom, you immediately lay down on the bed, wrapping yourself in a blanket for warmth. Kid was sitting in your chair, reading a book.

"You know, since you're so worried about me, maybe a little kiss and a hug will heal me a bit?" You teased him, when he smiled you thought he would agree but then he shook his head, closing the book and looking at you.

"Why nottttt???"

"Because you're sick and I don't want to be sick too." You leaned back on your pillows and crossed your arms, pouting slightly. For a moment you forgot that your boyfriend hated germs, but that's okay because he ended up staying anyway and he didn't even have to, it made you smile, knowing you meant a lot to him.

"And don't worry about your lessons, you'll catch up on them thanks to me."

"Thanks, Kid. I love you." You could see a little redness on his cheeks, but he smiled slightly and nodded.

"I love you too, [Name]."
