Important news everybody!
So in Switzerland, there is not only @sbb-cff-ffs-official, there are lots of smaller regional railways, usually owned by one or more cantons. One of them is the Regional Bus and Railroad Company of Ticino, in the italian-speaking part of the country. Or as it is known in their native language: Ferrovie Autolinee Regionali Ticinesi SA, or in short…
FART.

Of all the acronyms chosen without a regard for people who know english, this is definitely takes the cake. Yes, the "POS" variant of the french TGV (paired with the MF variant of the german ICE 3) is also nice, but this rail and bus company is on a whole other level.
Their main rail line is the Centovalli line, a very scenic metre-gauge railway that connects the southern ends of the Simplon and Gotthard main alp-crossing routes. It's very nice, but often in the shadow of the more well-known lines like the Glacier Express, Bernina Express or Golden Pass Express. The Grand Train Tour of Switzerland, a marketing scheme that tries to organise the most scenic tourist-friendly train lines of Switzerland into a sort of coherent tour, includes a fucking bus from Tirano to Lugano in its main itinerary, but puts the Centovalli line (from Locarno to Domodossola) under "other nice lines". Don't get me wrong, the bus ride is actually a lot of fun, but it's absolutely not on the same level.
(By the way, half of the line is in Italy, operated by their italian partner company SSIF, but as their acronym is boring, we'll ignore them here.)
With that context out of the way, on to the news: The swiss portion of the Centovalli line is getting new trains! They already have some renders:

It's honestly not that exciting a train, a version of the standard train building kit that Stadler sells to all the narrow-gauge railroads in Switzerland. But what is important is that they will all get names. And they're asking the internet for ideas.
Now, they have some suggestions, all points of interest along the line, and for their free text option they ask that you pick something like that as well. And if you do find yourself compelled to participate in that survey, I strongly suggest that you do the same. Please do not vandalise the train name survey of this little Swiss rail line.
I just think that I would be failing in my duty to you, dear readers, if I didn't tell you that here's an official chance to Name That Fart.

Locarno, la ripartenza dei viaggi del Treno storico della Ferrovia delle Centovalli.   Il treno storico riparte festeggiando i papà il 19 marzo 2023 e propone un ricco calendario di uscite e tante novità: dalla cena con delitto al treno Soundtracks che sarà proposto in collaborazione con JazzAscona. “I viaggi con il treno storico sono proposti dal 2020, grazie alla collaborazione tra FART (Ferrovie Autolinee Regionali Ticinesi) e SEFT (Società Esercizio Ferroviario Turistico), allo scopo di riscoprire la storica linea ferroviaria tra Locarno e Camedo viaggiando su materiale rotabile storico” commenta Giangiorgio Helbling, Responsabile del Dipartimento Esercizio delle FART “una proposta che ha saputo riscuotere un successo sempre più ampio, anche grazie all’apertura del deposito treni di Camedo che ci ha permesso di abbinare esperienze sempre nuove a un viaggio già di per sé unico e suggestivo”. Il treno storico parte unicamente dalla stazione sotterranea delle FART a Muralto e viaggia in direzione di Camedo ad una velocità massima di 40 km/h, offrendo ai passeggeri ancor più tempo per ammirare il suggestivo e selvaggio paesaggio delle Centovalli. “La stagione ripartirà il 19 marzo, in occasione della festa del papà, con una formula rinnovata” commenta Monica Brancato Gliozzi, Capo servizio Marketing “ogni uscita proporrà infatti un’esperienza diversa e offrirà ai produttori locali una vetrina per presentarsi e proporre la degustazione dei propri prodotti. Il 19 marzo saranno presenti tre eccellenze di Intragna: la Macelleria da la Val, la Panetteria Pellanda e il Caffè Antico. All’interno del deposito saranno inoltre allestiti un angolo bar, gestito dall’Osteria Grütli e un’area dedicata ad attività ludiche per i bambini”. I viaggi con il treno storico saranno proposti con partenza alle 10.00 o alle 14.13 da Locarno-Muralto anche nelle seguenti date: lunedì 10 aprile con un’edizione dedicata alla Caccia alle uova, domenica 14 maggio in occasione della Festa della mamma, domenica 4 giugno e domenica 23 luglio con edizioni legate ai sapori locali. “Sono inoltre previste tre edizioni speciali per le quali stiamo ancora definendo gli ultimi dettagli” conclude Monica Brancato Gliozzi “proporremo la Cena con delitto (sabato 17 giugno) e il Brunch del primo agosto ma la vera sorpresa della stagione sarà il treno Soundtracks organizzato in collaborazione con JazzAscona che viaggerà sabato 24 giugno regalando un’atmosfera davvero unica”. 21 April 2021 - the unfortunately named train that could, to the CH-IT border like it should
Grüezi Mitenand!  Bonjour!  Buongiorno!  Hi everyone!
Thank you for joining me on the third day of the April 2001 journey.  I had arrived on 20th April in Milano Malpensa and took the historic Postal Bus service called "FlyCar" to Lugano where I had been since.  Today we will go to Bellinzona (cantonal capital of the Ticino, with many castles near downtown), Locarno, and a couple of other places reachable by regional train.
The day started chilly, but unlike north of the St. Gotthard pass, there was little to no snow.  I woke up about 7 AM, used my ensuite shower and went downstairs to the breakfast room.  I was asked my room number and whether I wanted coffee or tea.  I was served at my seat, a couple of breadrolls, a plate of cold cuts and cheese and jams, including a pinky finger sized tube of liver sausage paté.  I ate and then let the hotel know I was going to be in Bellinzona most of the day.  I walked to the bus stop at Via Cattori (where I also took the bus on the 17th September 2000) to the FFS rail station.  I had a Swiss Pass that was valid for eight consecutive days, so I did not need to fill in the days for validation.  I just needed to go to the rail station ticket office, show my passport and rail pass, and let the staff validate the rail pass.  The difference between a Swiss Rail Pass and a Eurail Pass that includes Switzerland, is that the Swiss Rail Pass is valid for 99% of all public transit in Switzerland, the major exception being the section from Brig VS to Chur GR.  Postal bus fares are for the most part included.  
The 9:50 AM train to Bellinzona arrived at Track 3.  That is where most northbound quality trains board from, Track 2 is for the same trains southbound.  For example, just as the express train to Bellinzona arrived, there was a Cisalpino train arriving for Milan via Chiasso at Track 2.  Track 1 is for the local trains.  The train went on what I refer to as the "Pre-Ceneri-Base-Tunnel" route.  It arrived in Bellinzona about 10:25 AM.  Walking along Viale Stazione towards the Municipio di Bellinzona (city hall), the road was closed from Via Claudio Pellandini (goes to Hotel Unione at Viale Portone) to Piazza Nosetto.  As the day was Saturday, Piazza Nosetto was set up as a weekly farmer's market and second hand market.  As I happened to have my Panasonic CD player with me, I tried to find some interesting music, sadly there was nothing interesting enough or anything that I did not already have.  Instead I went to the Manor department store, in the bargain bin I found a CD, namely Cock Robin's greatest hits, including "Just around the corner".  Years later, Belgian singer Kate Ryan would make a French-language cover version of Cock Robin's "Promise", also on the CD.  
I walked around Bellinzona for a while to get to see the castles, for example, Castelgrande, Castello di Montebello and Castello di Sasso Corbaro which can only be seen from a distance.  About 12 PM it was time to go to the second city, so I took the 12:20 PM train to Locarno.  The route is basically flat all the way to Locarno.  While filming the train ride, I took a cable to connect the CD player to my camera, and I could play a CD over the camera microphone sound.  I did something similar on the 28th April with the train's onboard audio.  
When I arrived at Locarno about 12:30 PM, I did not want to immediately explore the city itself, I would do that a little later.  At the Locarno FFS station, there is also an underground station for an unfortunately named local train that serves between Locarno and the Swiss-Italian border.  The two trains that serve the underground station, are FART (Ferrovie Autolinee Regionali Ticinesi) and SSIF (Società Subalpina Imprese Ferroviarie) that goes to Domodossola.  The former makes more stops than the latter.  The train reached Camedo, the last station before the Italian border, at 1:35 PM.  I spent maybe half an hour walking around Camedo before returning to the train for Locarno.  The train took about 45 minutes to arrive at Locarno.  After leaving the rail station, I walked towards Lago Maggiore and Casino di Locarno.  About 3:30 PM I took the train to Giubiasco and caught another train to Lugano.  I took the funicular train from Lugano FFS to the old city.  After a half hour, I decided to take a train to Mendrisio.  I arrived at Mendrisio about 5:30 PM, and took the postal bus to Fox Town, which was still open.
I took a postal bus to Melide but did not go into the miniature museum, instead I waited for a train to Lugano.  While waiting, I looked toward Campione on the other side of Lago di Lugano.  I saw a Cisalpino train pass by, but took a local train to Lugano.  From there I took the funicular to the old town, and to the Manora restaurant close to Piazza Alighieri Dante.  They were still open but were going to close at 9 PM.  I was able to pick my own ingredients for the pizza.  They cooked it in an oven that customers can plainly see.  I was not able to eat it all, so I took the rest of it to the hotel.  I took the bus back and went to bed.  I recorded maybe a couple of hours of Rete Otto and DRS 1.  One song I remember from that recording was "New Train" by the late John Prine (d. 7 April 2020).  
Tomorrow it will be very cold, so be ready for interesting landscapes, along the pre-Gotthard-Base-Tunnel route.  Monday at 6 PM is going to be the big show.

As the 27 Times Cinema programme comes to an end, we had our last panel discussion, Festivals and Markets, where Jean-Christophe Simon and Teresa Cavina talked about the journey a film makes since entering the open calls for festivals, getting through the selection process and also how it is later sold and distributed world-wide.
Teresa Cavina has been part of the programming team for festivals such as the Venice Film Festival (1989-1997) or the Locarno Film Festival, which she later also co-directed from 2001 to 2005. In 2006 she launched the Rome Film Festival, working as a Co-Artistic Director until 2008. She has been Artistic Director of FIPA Biarritz (2009-2012) and Programming Director of Abu Dhabi FF (2009-2014). Currently, she collaborates in the programming of the Venice Days, El Gouna FF and Busan IFF.
As she has a lot of experience in one of the most renowned film festivals in the world, I was curious to find out more about her personal experience as a programmer and artistic director and what drives her to want to be part of initiatives such as Sarajevo Talents and Locarno Open Doors.
I know you have been part of the programming team for many renowned film festivals, so I wanted to ask you what makes a good film? One that you take into consideration when you are programming for a film festival.
I think that something very important to underline is that the selection of a film festival is a question of taste. At the end of the day, there is somebody who signs the selection, even if it’s the result of many people who are doing research and watch the submitted films, there is somebody responsible for the final decision. Just like first time artistic director Gaia Furrer has made the final decision on the Giornate degli Autori selection. If it had been my selection maybe it would have been the same or different but it comes down to the sensitivity of the programmer.
As far as I am concerned, the most important thing is that a film takes you somewhere, it doesn’t matter where, it could be a trip inside the mind, a trip in the universe or an exciting trip in a gripping story, but I need to go somewhere. If at the end I realise that I haven’t had any emotional, intellectual or aesthetic involvement then the film is not for me.
When you make the selection for a specific section, do you think of it as a whole, so you have different films that all work together, or do you only think about the films themselves?
I think about the films in the first place, but of course I am aware of the origin because a film section has 15-20 films maximum, so if I already have 2-3 films from the same country it’s a bit unbalanced. In the end all might be selected, but I am aware that I am making an exception because they all have exceptional ideas. There is something that always happens to me which is very curious: I always end up having like 3 slots left and 5-6 films that I like a lot, but I wonder which ones deserve to take the last places and all of a sudden the selection makes the decision for you. You see which ones are right because it’s like a dialogue that establishes itself among the films without you being aware of it. When this doesn’t happen, I keep checking and rechecking my selection to understand what is not working, because if the selection is done well it should work. In the end you are just looking for good cinema, not certain themes or subjects, and then you see that there is a fil rouge (red line) that was hiding itself and came up without you being aware of it.
I know that film festivals like Locarno have a reputation for its avant-garde and cutting-edge selection, and other film festivals have a certain profile as well. Do you sometimes feel that when you are making the selection you have to follow the profile of the festival?
No, you follow the audience of the festivals. In Locarno, for example, it would be a scene to go traditional, and people are free to like or dislike what they see. The public is also vocal when they don’t like a film, but I have never seen an empty theatre or a scarcely occupied one even for the most daring or avant-garde film. I have been programming for several years for Abu Dhabi, and of course you should try to build bridges so what I was doing in Abu Dhabi was to push a little bit the envelope, but not too far because it’s very different to program for Abu Dhabi than Locarno. But in the end, if you really want to be a good programmer you have to go to the theatres and check the reaction of the audience and learn from them. See what they like and then make the audience grow. In Venice and Giornate degli Autori, that carved its own space of freedom, you are not so related to the local aspect of the festival as it’s very international, but Sarajevo is a fabulous window for the Balkan Cinema, so of course the programmers of Sarajevo have always been more interested in finding great Balkan films to show to their own audience. Also other programmers go especially to Sarajevo to discover the best films of the area.
You are also involved in initiatives such as Sarajevo Talents and Locarno Open Doors. Why is it important for you to help young filmmakers?
I love Sarajevo deeply; I am a mentor for a script platform of the talent campus. I really like it because it’s a very creative and inspiring moment when a script is being born and I like working on it with the director. In a way, I only give technical service, I try to be like a midwife, I just want to give possibilities when the director is stuck, but not influence them in the storytelling, because when you write and rewrite a script you need an external eye to see why you are stuck and try to imagine how the situation can evolve. A trick that I use to help is that, if you have a scene with your main character but they are talking to somebody else, you should try to imagine the situation from the perspective of the other person. Then you can see what works, what doesn’t work and what is missing from the scene.

  Una proposta insolita, un po’ vintage, con il tempo giusto per godersi il panorama, forse anche il fascino di un tempo…
Viaggiare su un treno a vapore lungo le sponde del Lago Maggiore, per scoprire Camelie Locarno, la manifestazione che si terrà nell’elegante cittadina ticinese del Lago Maggiore.
Per l’occasione, domenica 25 marzo, il Verbano Express, il museo ferroviario del Verbano, proporrà un viaggio su un caratteristico treno d’epoca a vapore.
La corsa speciale partirà da Luino alle 12,42 per arrivare a Locarno alle 13,45, mentre il rientro avverrà con partenza da Locarno alle 18,15 e arrivo a Luino alle 19,18.
Il costo del viaggio sarà di 20 euro a persona per gli adulti, mentre i ragazzi da 6 a 12 anni pagheranno 10 euro.
Per l’ingresso ai luoghi della mostra ci saranno possibili diverse soluzioni, tutte da pagare sul posto, per solo il Parco Camelie Frs 5, per l’esposizione presso il Palazzo della Sopracenerina Frs 8, combinato il Parco e la Sopracenerina Frs 10.
La manifestazione, fra le principali rassegne mondiali dedicate al fiore simbolo della primavera, si terrà in due luoghi, collegati fra loro da un bus navetta gratuito, con partenze al trentesimo minuti di ogni ora dalla stazione FFS e ai minuti 15 e 45 nella tratta di ritorno, e una fermata intermedia in via della Pace.
Oltre al panoramico viaggio in treno a vapore, arrivando nel cuore storico di Locarno, la visita all’esposizione permetterà di osservare il mondo di questa specie floreale, nelle sue più belle tonalità di colore.
La vecchia rimessa locomotive del 1882 di Luino, ora sede del Museo Ferroviario del Verbano, è anche un’officina, oltre ad essere sede di mostre, diorami e punto di riferimento per turisti e appassionati di ferrovia.
Accanto alle prestigiose E 428 e alla veterana Gr 625.116, si può ammirare l’imponente locomotiva tedesca BR 50 3673, costruita nel 1941, tutt’ora funzionante e acquistata dalla Verbano Express per l’effettuazione di percorsi a vapore.
A rendere particolarmente importante il Museo Ferroviario non è solo la sua esposizione, infatti, si è creato intorno alla stazione di Luino un polo storico-culturale e una solida comunità legata dalla passione per il mondo dei treni e delle ferrovie.
Il museo luinese è soprattutto un ambiente che conserva una parte del patrimonio storico locale e ha cercato di valorizzarlo al meglio coinvolgendo gli amanti del settore.
In questo luogo periodicamente sono promossi eventi e iniziative, tra cui i viaggi d’epoca che l’associazione organizza verso la vicina Svizzera, sul treno trainato dalla mitica BR 50 3673, ad esempio, è diventato realtà già da un paio d’anni.
I visitatori che hanno preso parte all’evento sono partiti ad Arth Goldau (CH) e hanno percorso tutta la linea del San Gottardo sul treno a vapore.
Dopo il viaggio, la locomotiva è rimasta a Luino nella collezione del Museo Ferroviario del Verbano, pronta a riprendere il via in una nuova occasione.
Tra le varie iniziative promosse in occasione del ventesimo anniversario dell’Associazione c’è stato anche l’arrivo di un treno ETR 150 Flirt della società Tilo che adesso porta il nome di Valli del Luinese.
