A slightly more somber note.
Yesterday I went to the actual Grand Canyon. It would be a little odd not to while I'm in the area. I didn't stay terribly long relative to what I could have, beginning at Desert View and ending at Yavapai Point.

Desert View is a significant place for aviation history. It is the location of the memorial to the 1956 Grand Canyon mid-air collision. United Air Lines Flight 718, a Douglas DC-7 registered N6324C and named "Mainliner Vancouver", and TWA Flight 2, a Lockheed L-049A Super Constellation registered N6902C and named "Star of the Seine", collided in mid-air in the area visible from the Desert View observation point. All 128 people on both aircraft were killed. It was the deadliest commercial crash in US history, and the deadliest crash on US soil. It is still the deadliest crash in Arizona.
More than just the staggering number of deaths, though, this crash is meaningful because of how many lives it has since saved. Air traffic control in 1956 was essentially nonexistent, unrecognizable to someone living in the modern day. This crash forced reforms that essentially ended the conditions which allowed it to happen. Today, the idea of taking it on faith that pilots will always notice other planes and taking no other steps to prevent collisions is entirely unthinkable, and something like this is more or less impossible. This crash was also a major catalyst in the replacement of the Civil Aeronautics Administration with the FAA that we know and...know, by a congressional act in 1958.

The crash site itself is inaccessible, but in 2014 it was declared a National Historic Landmark. It is now commemorated by an plaque and informational board in the shadow of Desert View Watchtower, where you can easily see the place where two planes collided over a half-century ago. It wouldn't stand out unless you knew what you were looking for, but it's there, nearly unchanged from what it was when 128 people lost their lives amid its breathtaking scenery.

Turbo Connie by Lockheed Martin Via Flickr: Four Lockheed R7V-1 Super Constellation transports ordered by the U.S. Navy (Bureau Numbers 131630/131631 and 131660/131661) were modified during assembly as experimental turboprop-powered R7V 2s with four 5,550 shaft horsepower Pratt & Whitney YT34-P-12A engines turning three-bladed propellers with squared off tips. Design of the R7V-2 began in 1951 and the aircraft was first flown in September 1954. Lockheed leased one of the R7V-2s back from the Navy to serve as a testbed for the Allison 501 turboprop engines used to power the L 188 Electra airliner. Nicknamed Elation (derived from combing Electra and Constellation), that aircraft was later delivered to the US Air Force as a YC-121F.

Things Have Gone Sideways: mysterymanjoseph and ifashootingstarcouldtalk
Joseph had taken a trip to London to see about consolidating a few European branch office into this single one. After several meetings, a few modifications to the plan, things seem to be coming together. He goes back to his small rental place he is staying, white knuckles on the steering wheel of the Range Rover he had been provided to drive while on this venture. After arriving, he checks back with corporate h.q. on his laptop, using a secure satellite link to get a connection. There was a priority message from Janet, his executive assistant, who has been with the corporation since Joseph's grandfather's time running the business. Seems the cyber security division has detected something, 'troubling', going on, U.S. cyber security branches have detected the same thing, and they are almost in a near panic. Reading the message a few times over, he thinks, "Maybe I should cut this trip short, head back home?" He picks up his cell, getting in contact with his pilot, instructing him to get the crew to the airport and the plane ready to go. It was his grandfather's old 'business aircraft', an updated Lockheed Super Constellation, the queen of the air in her time. The place was modified to be able to fully function without any computer chips controlling any systems, a precaution Joseph's grandfather insisted on during the last refit and upgrades. Joseph starts packing, thinking, "This was something the old man prepared for, but, prayed every night would not happen." As he carries his bags out the door, he thinks, "I'll send a message to the local office that meetings are canceled, that they should prepare for 'trouble' of some sort, best thing I can do for them I suppose."

airsLLide No. 12985: 53-0554, Lockheed EC-121T Warning Star, US Air Force, Pima Air & Space Museum, Tucson, March 25, 1997.
Located at the South end of the huge storage and aircraft recovery sites of Davis Monthan AFB, the Pima Air & Space museum is an absolute must-see eldorado for aviation aficionados. Among many other rare - or shall we say, extinct - military and commercial birds, it hosts three different variants of the famous Lockheed Constellation family, such as the electronic reconnaissance EC-121T Warning Star which is a derivative of the civilian Lockheed 1049 Super Constellation.
Another well preserved Connie early off the produciton line hides in the background, namely a former TWA L-049A Constellation. But she'll be posted later, guys & gals.
