The next brand we would like to showcase is Aimé Leon Dore. Aimé Leon Dore has quickly become one of the most original streetwear brands to come out of the Big Apple. It is often dubbed as New York’s answer to A.P.C. Founded by Teddy Santis in 2014, Aimé Leon Dore is a menswear fashion and lifestyle brand based in Queens, New York.  Aimé Leon Dore gets its inspiration from vintage, New York nostalgia with garments that illustrate a story immersed in Queen’s heritage. The brand has mainly focused on cool, clean basics that are of high quality and easy-to-wear. Aimé Leon Dore’s garments consist of color-blocked rugby shirts, nylon windbreakers, plain t-shirts, pique polos, oxfords with floral embroidered “A” logos, and a handful of collaborations, like New Balance 997s and a few New Era Yankees caps. The mash-up is a little preppy, a little retro, a little sport, and never overworked.

Teddy Santis was born and raised in Queens, New York by immigrant Greek parents who believed in hard work and making sure we never forgot where we came from. Santis had no fashion background prior to starting Aimé Leon Dore and apparel was never the main initiative. Aimé Leon Dore’s exploration of sophisticated streetwear reaches a level of luxury not commonly seen from independent design outfits. It is for this reason why the brand has developed such a strong fan base.

Chip Games

Over the years, potato chip companies gave away many promotional items.  This blog will focus on some of the games.  One of our followers, Katherine Cox from Oklahoma, provided the attached photos of the Kitty Clover Car Capers (also known as car bingo) game.  Katherine estimates the age to be from the 1950's and is trying to figure out whether they were included in tins.  Despite a lot of research, I have not yet been able to ascertain how this game was distributed.  Can you help her?  The game was made to avoid boredom during long car trips.  As a kid, we played tracking out of state license plates.  As you can see, this game tracks a much broader selection of items. 

  I previously wrote a blog about Kitty Clover and the history of the company can be found under "Kitty Clover" under the "Building an Industry" link on my TogaChipGuy.com website.  Recently, I had the chance to speak with various members of the Lippold family.   In 1932, Harold J. Lippold, then 18 years old)  purchased Kitty Clover and its equipment shortly after it was founded for $150 to $200.  In this depression era, most companies only hired married men with kids to help them survive the tough economic conditions.  Since Harold was single, purchasing a company was a means of employment.  The original owner had created the logo with the cat in the circle.  Harold's father was one of six sons and all of his uncles worked for Kitty Clover.  Harold's Dad was a pharmacist.  Without a car, Harold frequently borrowed his Dad's car.   Harold purchased his Dad's car in exchange for 60 percent of the company stock, 40% to his Dad and 20% to his Mom.  Harold's Dad married and divorced.  He later asked out the telephone operator at the company and they ended up being married for about fifty years.  Once they married, Harold's wife stayed home to raise her family.    

Harold built a factory that was located on a railroad spur in Omaha, Nebraska.  Growing up, Harold's son, Terry remembers a 3 foot wide metal conveyor belt and a salter.  Terry would eat the chips directly off of th conveyor belt.  A glass wall separated the office from the factory.  All of Harold's Uncles had their offices on one wall and they all used their first two initials on the doors to their offices.   In 1954, all of the executives were paid the same amount, $12 thousand a year.  The company purchased its potatoes from Idaho.  Kitty Clover chips were known for their flavor.  When Harold was asked the secret, he would explain that he only used three ingredients, potatoes, salt and corn oil. His son Terry believes that the corn oil generated the flavor.  The oil was changed frequently.  The company used a secret code each month to determine the age of the chips.  The chips were consigned to stores and displayed on wire racks.  When the chips were 10 to 14 days old, the company picked them up from the sellers and these chips were then sold to farmers for pig feed.  Employees collected the company's share of the sales proceeds and replenished the chips.  The company served nine states and at one time was the world's largest chip manufacturer.  Harold didn't expand further to maintain control.  The company had 25 route trucks and at one time had a plant in Kansas City, Mo.  The building was 80 thousand square feet and the company had 150 employees.

Harold had two sons and two daughters.   I recently spoke to his son Terry, his granddaughter Teri (daughter of Harold's  daughter Pat, Denny) and Denny's widow, Judy.  In that timeframe, women were not as valued in business as men and rather than pass the company down to his sons for fear that the siblings would quarrel, even though they got along well. Harold, his wife and his parents sold out.  They used some of the sales proceeds from the company to set up his two sons in their own businesses which were Dairy Queen franchises. 

    When Fairmont Foods purchased Kitty Clover in 1955, they fired all of Harold's relatives and replaced them with college graduates who were non-informed of the techniques the Lippolds used in building their potato chip business.   Fairmont wanted to diversify outside of the dairy business and had expansion plans for Kitty Clover.  A lot of the company's knowledge disappeared with the firing of the Lippolds and the company went out of business within two years.  Harold died in 2006 at the age of 90.   On a recent trip to an antique store in Connecticut, I came across another game that was distributed by Smith's Potato Crisps.  Crisps is the name that the British use to describe to potato chips to distinguish them from what we call french fries to which they refer to as chips.  The game requires the player to "mount two jockeys on the two Horses without bending, cutting, or in any way mutilating the cards.  The logo of Saratoga Springs, NY, the purported birthplace of the potato chip, is Health, Horses and History as depicted in the attached photo, so the combination of horses and potato chips drew my attention.

At one point, Smith' Potato Crisps dominated the UK market.  You can read about how the company lost its strong position because while serving the pubs, it ignored the emerging grocery stores and incorrectly assumed that barrier costs of entry were sufficiently high to prevent a new competitor.  The new competitor, Golden Wonder, used television to market to teenagers and children.  After a series of acqusitions, Smiths's was eventually purchased by Pepsico which phased out the brand.
