ALBERT OEHLEN Tramonto Spaventoso
June 10–August 7, 2021 Gagosian at the Marciano Art Foundation, 4357 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles __________ Gagosian is pleased to present Albert Oehlen’s Tramonto Spaventoso (2019–20). This is the first time that Oehlen’s provocative and personal response to the Rothko Chapel in Houston is being exhibited in its entirety; the first part was shown at the Serpentine Galleries, London, in 2019–20, the second at Gagosian Beverly Hills earlier this year. The paintings are installed in a custom-built octagonal structure in the Grand Theater Gallery of the Marciano Art Foundation, reflecting the layout of the original chapel. Oehlen uses abstract, figurative, and collaged elements—often applying self-imposed strategic constraints—to disrupt the histories and conventions of modern painting. While championing self-consciously “bad” painting characterized by crude drawing and jarring coloration, he infuses expressive gesture with Surrealist attitude, openly disparaging the quest for reliable form and stable meaning. In the eight large-scale paintings that constitute the Tramonto Spaventoso project, Oehlen variously interprets and dramatically transforms John Graham’s Tramonto Spaventoso (Terrifying Sunset, 1940–49), a painting by the Russian-born American modernist that Oehlen discovered in the 1990s and has been fascinated with ever since.
In a startling act of creative homage, Oehlen interprets Graham’s puzzle-like image in myriad ways across multiple compositions. Using acrylic, spray paint, charcoal, and patterned fabric on canvas, he reworks various motifs from the original, including a mermaid and a man sporting a monocle and a Daliesque moustache. Combining graphic brushstrokes, deliberate “painterly” drips, and textural obfuscations, he tests the limits of coherence and legibility, challenging the viewer with unexpected aesthetic and thematic shifts. The work is illustrated in the catalogue recently published on the occasion of the Beverly Hills exhibition. Albert Oehlen was born in 1954 in Krefeld, Germany, and currently lives and works in Switzerland. Collections include the Broad, Los Angeles; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Art Institute of Chicago; Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, FL; Cleveland Museum of Art; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museo Jumex, Mexico City; Tate, London; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Germany; and Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Exhibitions include Museo di Capodimonte, Naples, Italy (2009); Réalité Abstraite, Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris (2009); Terpentin, Kunstmuseum Bonn, Germany (2012); Malerei, Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien, Vienna (2013); 55th Biennale di Venezia (2013); Die 5000 Finger von Dr. Ö, Museum Wiesbaden, Germany (2014); Home and Garden, New Museum, New York (2015); An Old Painting in Spirit, Kunsthalle Zürich (2015); Behind the Image, Guggenheim Bilbao, Spain (2017); Woods near Oehle, Cleveland Museum of Art (2018); TRANCE, Aïshti Foundation, Beirut (2018); Cows by the Water, Palazzo Grassi, Venice (2018–19); Unfertig, Lokremise Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, Switzerland (2019); and Serpentine Galleries, London (2019–20). _____ Albert Oehlen, never sleep again / at the steering wheel a man is a man / starter – turn me on, 2019, charcoal and acrylic on canvas, in 3 parts, overall: 145 7/8 × 245 7/8 inches (370.4 × 624.3 cm) © Albert Oehlen. Peter Prange, Author / Triptych, Martina Rall
Photography, Triptych Limited Edition 1 of 1 From the series ARTISTS IN ACTION 120 x 40 cm (3 squares à 40 cm) Digital C-Print on Photo Paper behind 2mm Acrylic Glass, mounted on Alu-Dibond-Plates. Hand signed on the back. With a certificate of authenticity. Limited Edition of 1 + 1 AP © 2012 Martina Rall. All rights reserved. Please note that this artwork ships within 10 working days, as it is printed on demand. In 2012 I portrayed the German author Peter Prange for “Artists in Action”. I photographed him at work on location at the University Library, during a book presentation and at home in his office in Tübingen. Peter Prange is a bestselling author. His historical novels are translated in numerous languages and the most popular “The Amber Amulet” has even been turned into film. Peter Prange decided to be part of my series, when he saw Mirella Leone’s triptych in my studio. Mirella the firework! But how different are the portraits of an author at work! The creative process is barely visible to the outside. It takes place in the inside. I made two triptychs with Peter Pranges portraits. One while he is thinking, reading and writing. And the other to show the moment of illumination. ARTISTS IN ACTION Since 2010 I am focusing on a photo series about “Artists in Action”, portraying European artists from various fields: musicians, authors and actors at work, in order to explore the creative process and the fascination of art. This series started with the artist portrait of Mirella Leone, a very talented and expressive young Italian soprano singer. In 2011 I realized a triptych photocollage of HSH Karl Friedrich, Prince of Hohenzollern as well as the groovy German jazz musician, known as "Charly”. In 2012 I portrayed the German bestselling author Peter Prange during his work in his home office, at the University Library Tuebingen and during a book presentation. From 2013 – 2015 I have been working on an artists portrait of the Swiss actor Roland Koch. In November 2013 I photographed him during the filming of the popular German crime series "Tatort" in Constance/Germany, in June 2014 during his work as theatre director at the "Lokremise" in St. Gallen/Switzerland and in January 2015 in Vienna/Austria at the famous Burgtheater, where Koch since 1999 is part of the ensemble, and at the Max Reinhardt Seminar, where he is working as an acting teacher. In 2015 I photographed the American Conductor Myron Romanul, Conductor at the Nationaltheater Munich, Germany, Principal Conductor of the Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra and Guest Conductor at His Majesty's Theater in Perth, Australia, and the Opéra national du Rhin, France. Recently I also began writing about my exciting meetings, that became more intense with Roland Koch, approaching the person behind the artist and reflecting the creative process in portraying, published in the first issue of APP, a magazine about art, photography and poetry. For my "Artists in Action" series I chose the form of the triptych, because it allowed me to portray various facets of the artistic expression and because in this way results a kind of motion portrait. With this series I intend to picture movement in the still. I also like the tension curve which is built up in the triptych and leads to a central expression, a kind of quintessence in the middle part. And, by the way, I consider triptychs, with their original religios connotation, ideal for portraying personalities. Because many of them are worshipped and adored like Gods. I am realizing the prints in high gloss, so that they result like mirrors in confront of the viewer. To express that these artists are identification figures, first of all to me, but also for the public. Albert Oehlen at Gagosian Beverly Hills

ALBERT OEHLEN Tramonto Spaventoso
April 22–June 5, 2021 456 North Camden Drive, Beverly Hills __________ Gagosian is pleased to present Tramonto Spaventoso, an exhibition by Albert Oehlen comprising the second part of his version of the Rothko Chapel in Houston as well as other new paintings. The first part of the project—consisting of four paintings that mirror the imposing scale of the Color Field compositions in the Chapel while opposing Rothko’s contemplativeness with their frenetic energy—was exhibited at the Serpentine Galleries, London, in 2019–20. Both parts make up the work Tramonto Spaventoso (2019–20). Oehlen uses abstract, figurative, and collaged elements to disrupt the histories and conventions of modern painting. By adding improvised components, he unearths ever-new possibilities for the genre. While championing self-consciously amateurish “bad” painting, Oehlen continues to infuse expressive gesture with Surrealist attitude, openly disparaging the quest for reliable form and stable meaning. In the large-scale canvases on view at the Beverly Hills gallery, Oehlen employs acrylic, spray paint, charcoal, and patterned fabric to interpret and transform John Graham’s painting Tramonto Spaventoso (Terrifying Sunset, 1940–49), a work by the Russian-born American modernist painter that he discovered in the 1990s and has been fascinated with ever since. Using Graham’s puzzle-like painting as a vehicle for repeated interpretation, Oehlen reconfigures elements in diverse and absurdist ways across multiple compositions. The exhibition, which goes by the same title, is therefore in part an homage to the earlier, lesser-known artist.
Reworking motifs from Graham’s original, including a mermaid and a man sporting a monocle and a Daliesque handlebar moustache, Oehlen improvises on his source. In explosive abstractions in acrylic and spray paint, he combines graphic brushstrokes, deliberate “painterly” drips, surprising color combinations, and textural obfuscations to test the limits of coherence and legibility. Oehlen’s paintings are characteristically disparate, challenging the viewer with unexpected shifts in aesthetic and thematic direction. To accompany Tramonto Spaventoso, Oehlen commissioned music by Steamboat Switzerland, the experimental jazz ensemble with whom he also collaborated at the Serpentine Galleries. Played at intervals throughout the day, the recorded composition draws connections with Oehlen’s own visual strategies. A fully illustrated catalogue, featuring a conversation between the artist and curator Mark Godfrey, will be published on the occasion of the exhibition. Albert Oehlen was born in 1954 in Krefeld, Germany, and currently lives and works in Switzerland. Collections include the Broad, Los Angeles; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Art Institute of Chicago; Museo Jumex, Mexico City; Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, FL; Cleveland Museum of Art; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate, London; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Germany; and Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Exhibitions include Museo di Capodimonte, Naples, Italy (2009); Réalité Abstraite, Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris (2009); Terpentin, Kunstmuseum Bonn, Germany (2012); Malerei, Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien, Vienna (2013); 55th Biennale di Venezia (2013); Die 5000 Finger von Dr. Ö, Museum Wiesbaden, Germany (2014); Home and Garden, New Museum, New York (2015); An Old Painting in Spirit, Kunsthalle Zürich (2015); Behind the Image, Guggenheim Bilbao, Spain (2017); Woods near Oehle, Cleveland Museum of Art (2017); TRANCE, Aïshti Foundation, Beirut (2018); Cows by the Water, Palazzo Grassi, Venice (2018–19); Unfertig, Lokremise Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, Switzerland (2019), and Serpentine Galleries, London (2019–20). _____ Image: Albert Oehlen in his studio, Ispaster, Spain, 2020. Mirella Leone, Soprano Singer / Triptych, Martina Rall
Photography, Triptych From the series ARTISTS IN ACTION 120 x 40 cm (3 squares à 40 cm) Digital C-Print on PVC high gloss adhesive film, mounted on Alu-Dibond-Plates. Hand signed on the back. With a certificate of authenticity. Limited Edition 1 of 1 + 1 AP © 2010 Martina Rall. All rights reserved. Please note that this artwork ships within 10 working days, as it is printed on demand. I photographed Mirella Leone in March 2010, during an Opera Concert in my hometown Tübingen in Germany. Mirella has been a real firework on stage. Her performance absolutely electrifying. Her voice effortlessly filled the entire concert hall. With her energy, passion and virtuosity she enchanted and fascinated the audience. A profound, full and resounding performance of of Italian opera arias, making absolutely credit to its family name Leone. Mirella has been the first artist at work I portrayed.
