Happy Halloween, Age of Sail Tumblr! I hope everyone spent it doing Battle of Trafalgar activities (kissing the homies & getting pickled).
Image on the right found credited to unknown artist on the blog of @ltwilliammowett, the real admiral of Boat Tumblr.

for my mutuals interested in my England Exploits…. finally got to the national maritime museum today (saved the best for last), made a beeline for the nelson’s navy exhibit, and felt like I was seeing a celebrity
my takeaways:
it never really struck me how small of a person nelson was… it was such an experience to realize I was essentially standing at eye level with him while I was looking at his uniform
there was, however, a disappointing lack of Homoerotic Detail during the entire section dedicated to his death (which is to say they entirely failed to mention Kiss Me Hardy). they also just didn’t mention the gruesome fate of his body between his death and his funeral (which is to say they skipped the fun part)
I have so many mixed feelings about this man. what a guy
the 1787 uniform remains my favorite pattern but the 1795 pattern is a very close second
james clark ross’s sword! the one he held in the Hot Portrait!!

Today, the 21st of October is Trafalgar Day.
On this day in 1805, Vice-admiral Horatio Nelson of the Royal Navy commanded a fleet of British warships to defeat a combined force of French and Spanish vessels off the Cape of Trafalgar in Spain.
Lord Nelson gave his life during the fighting. While commanding his fleet from the quarterdeck of his flagship H.M.S Victory, he was hit by a sniper's bullet and fatally wounded, dying during the battle.
Trafalgar was one of Britain's biggest contributions to the Napoleonic Wars, and was a serious blow to French naval power.

It's me again! This time I have a question for you, Atty:
If Nelson and Castlereagh were drowning, who would you save?
- 🍵
I mean can’t Nelson swim?
But he doesn’t have an arm… that makes it more difficult…
…
…
I’d probably save Castlereagh
I need someone that can reach the highest cabinets

Letter written on Nov. 16, 1799, by Lord Nelson to Sir John Acton, Prime Minister of Naples, requesting Russian financial assistance to salvage the British situation in Malta. Nelson here styles himself "Bronte Nelson"; one month prior, he had been granted the dukedom of Bronte by Ferdinand III of Sicily as thanks for preventing the French conquest of that island. The letter is now in the Malta Postal Museum, Valletta.
