Hide and Seek

For those lost in time and memory, the hunt never ends.

The oracle Athena has known tragedy since she was born; with her home destroyed, loved ones gone, and a former moirail that harmed and abused her, she's learned to lose her fight before the fight loses her. That is, until she's exiled to the Safari: a ruthless land full of criminals and exiles who pride themselves on pillages and murder. She falls under the ownership of the fearsome warlord Hidelord, though their relationship comes to grow more complicated and codependent by the day.

When Athena's brother sends a bounty to rescue her, she'll have to relearn to let her guard down and not without the help of the ever charming and quirky prophet of a god of life. But she'll soon find herself with a choice to make: to love life because she is a part of it, or to love life because she can control it. It's a decision she'll have to make soon, for the Hidelord won't sit still for long.

Summery

The nature of a card is to be used in the game of life. Each kingdom plays by a different set of rules. A thousand year old curse forces each of the Kingdoms to draw from the game of war. Leaving the flaws to fester in each kingdom. A wild card that goes by the name of Gilbert is introduced to the world, will his shenanigans force the others to show their hand?

What is Cardverse?

Cardverse is a card art concept made by Hidekaz Himaruya for the series of Axis Powers Hetalia. The fandom has taken the card art concept and developed multiple Alternate Universes. This is just my take on the AU.

These are the official designs and I’ve taken some liberty on them. Just google Cardverse and all sorts of maps and designs will be shown.

Are the kings and queens married to eachother?

For this on the Au only the King and Queen of hearts are married. ( Kiku and Ludwig)

the others just have titles, but doesn’t mean that they are married or in a romantic relationship.

What are Jokers?

Jokers are considered wild cards or cards that deviate from the card hierarchy structure. They are imp like in nature and often seen in a negative light.

Jokers are often made due to unfortunate circumstances and taken before their time or by giving up ones suit.

i don't really like when people say dungeon meshi is accidentally good autistic representation, because while i understand not wanting to make conclusions without explicit confirmation from the author, there's always the weird assumption that non-western authors somehow don't know about things like neurodivergency/queerness/etc. (on top of the assumptions that east asian authors are somehow more naive or oblivious to "western" social issues).

given that dungeon meshi started being published in 2014, it's not really a "work belonging to its times"—it's as contemporary as any other media we discuss on this site, which means it should be fair to assume it engages with contemporary topics (and at the very least, you shouldn't say that the representation is accidental with so much confidence)

but anyways, the chapter "perfect communication" in ryoko kui's "terrarium in a drawer" is some of the most straightforward autistic representation I've seen, and from now on I'm going to assume that laios's character writing is absolutely intentional in that regard:

Ages of Ruin, A new Dawn, 4

The next morning the Blizzard had died down, but it was still snowing heavily. Weather like this was quiet dangerous, but the Group didn't really have a choise. The rations were running low and if they stayed here, they'd risk beeing snowed in. They breefly discussed Dunes most recent dream, before heading out into the cold.

They felt a bit uneasy leaving the hut, but the road was still long and the weather was only getting worse. Luckily the forests were denser up here and they provided some shelter from the snow. The forests themself were eerily silent, the snow swallowing any sound and the days were getting short. The journey had already taken months and it could take month more.

As dangerous as the weather was, other dangers were rarely encountered. There weren't many Pokémon that lived up here, no clan had made it's home north of the Coronet Mountain range and the nearest city was down in Kanto, even Roamers were rare up here and many had probably left the north during fall to spent the winter months in the warmer south.

Though this realative scarcity of Pokémon had let to an abundance of Animals up here. Most Pokémon were Omnivores and mainly lived of of berries and the occasional fish. Hunting other Pokémon was quiet the risk after all and even the weakest Mons had some tools to harm even the toughest fighters, so why risk it when a Sitrus or an Oran berry could do the job as well and arguably better.

On top of that berries had additional properties that were quiet helpful in many situations even outside of providing sustinace. Still some of the more carnivourus Pokémon couldn't survive well on berries alone. And so from time to time Pokémon had hunted eachother for food, but something mysterious had happened after the first cataclism.

There had always been non Pokémon living in the world, the main example being Humans, but beside them the only animals inhabiting the Pokémon world had been fish. But after the 1st. cataclism, suddenly more variants had begun to emerge. To this day it wasn't clear were they had come from, but some belived that the world was trying to make up for the lives that had vanished with humanity.

Regardless, these Animals offered a safer meat source for Pokémon then other Pokémon, as they couldn't use moves which made it hard for them to get past a Pokémons Hp-barrier. So naturally, an absence of Pokémon in an area lead to the animal thriving. The good part about that for our heros was that even when berries were hard to come by, they still had a reliable food source.

Snowpoint was located at the most northern point of Hisui. It was a total mystery why humans had established a settlement up here in the past and since not much of that was left today, some even questioned if they ever did at all. But, despite what somemon belived, some ancient ruins in the area painted an obvious picture, as Pokémon didn't build their own structures that far in the past. They had only started doing so after the 1st. cataclism.

It had taken the group another two weeks to reach this point after they had left the hut after the bizzard. The land up here was wild, humans had never settled much of Hisui as a whole and even fewer had vetured past the Coronet Mountains, as a result the Pokémon up here had never ecountered many of them and after they disappeared the land returned to it's wild state quickly.

Now the Group stood at the shores of Lake Acuity. Dune had fequently seen this lake in her dreams and so they'd figured they could start the search here. But right now they were the only living beings at the lake, it's surface was still in the fridgid cold, but even with the temperatures way in the negatives, the lake had not frozen over. A strange and powerful energy was emanating from it.

The group stood in scilience and awe of this mystical place. The sun stood low on this cold winter day, for the first time in days no cloud was seen in the sky. The water of the lake was so clear that one could see the lakes bottom and the snow glistend beautiful under the suns warming rays.

As the group was taking in this otherworldy sceen, they could hear a scream followed by the sounds of a fight, comming from the direction of snowpoint temple. The exchanged shocked lookes and then ran in the direction the sounds were comming from.

This was quiet the different page, but I wanted to experiment with a more distant writhing style and this journey to the north was a good opportunity for that. We'll return to the mor charakter focused storytelling next page.
