#<- a brick #beepbeep.txt #finally read through all her short story collections (at least the fan translated ones)#might post my thoughts on each of them because they're really really good and i hope more people read them #they're a lot more ambiguous and a little more grim than dunmeshi which is perfect for me #'the dragon's school is on top of the mountain' especially.#everytime i finished a chapter i had to put my phone down and stare into the middle distance #it's also interesting thinking about the themes she dwells and elaborates on over the course of her work. the theme of (mis)communication;#of what it means to be a hero; of empathizing with the monstrous and/or bestial; of struggling to think outside of a system that made you #it's good stuff!

i don't really like when people say dungeon meshi is accidentally good autistic representation, because while i understand not wanting to make conclusions without explicit confirmation from the author, there's always the weird assumption that non-western authors somehow don't know about things like neurodivergency/queerness/etc. (on top of the assumptions that east asian authors are somehow more naive or oblivious to "western" social issues).

given that dungeon meshi started being published in 2014, it's not really a "work belonging to its times"—it's as contemporary as any other media we discuss on this site, which means it should be fair to assume it engages with contemporary topics (and at the very least, you shouldn't say that the representation is accidental with so much confidence)

but anyways, the chapter "perfect communication" in ryoko kui's "terrarium in a drawer" is some of the most straightforward autistic representation I've seen, and from now on I'm going to assume that laios's character writing is absolutely intentional in that regard:

okay very preliminary thoughts on mitski's new album BUT i think there's something with how "laurel hell" felt like a goodbye to the music industry (can't find the source but i remember reading that it was intended to be her last album under her contract) like i'm sorry anthony fantano but if you interpret the back half of "laurel hell" as being generic breakup songs you're missing like 80% of the context. to me TO ME it feels so clearly about her negotiating her relationship with fame, how she can't love her fans the way they love her, and how she feels like she sold her soul to her job, so the only thing to do is step away. but THEN "the land is inhospitable and so are we" was created after mitski decided to renegotiate her contract, specifically because she loved making music enough to deal with the negative aspects of the work. and then all the songs are about the ghost of love she can leave behind, despite the present pain or emptiness, and like. do you see it. do you see it.

#THE NARRATIVE.#beepbeep.txt #mitski #like you can definitely interpret everything through the lens of personal romantic relationships BUT. i think its even better #envisioning that she is speaking to her actual audience. the love they have for her and the love she is trying to communicate to them #i mean especially “i don't like my mind” just feels like a response to “love me more” where she begs to keep her job #specifically so she doesn't have to be alone with all these thoughts. so she can be witnessed #but then i feel like “the deal” and “when memories snow” are responses to “working for the knife” and “everyone” where her job leaves her #feeling emptied out of all this pain and love simultaneously. hence the ghostliness of the whole album #and her coming to terms with this feeling of emptiness. or actually. the loneliness of having no witnesses at all. after the music.#being king of her own land. if one would like to use that turn of phrase #IS ANYONE ELSE GOING INSANE OR.

i think the internet could be greatly improved if we just assume that OP is always talking to someone who is not you. if the post is not personally applicable or relevant, cool, this isn't a conversation you're in. this is a strangers' conversation that you're eavesdropping on.

#especially on tumblr where most people treat their blogs like a diary. and posts that escape containment were never meant to be read as #all-encompassing. but also sometimes i see twitter posts that are like hm. this seems weirdly hostile. and it turns out the original contex #was that the op was mad at a very specific person. and it just got spread around because people assumed op was mad at them and decided to #argue. it's fun being part of the larger internet dialogue of course but few people post like they're making a presidential speech #and honestly if they do they either have enough reach that this kind of verbal-editing is necessary. or they're a theatre kid.#beepbeep.txt #weeeeeee i love saying opinions on my blooooog #inspired by two separate people on my dash complaining about random people arguing with them over an accidentally popular post

okay all of the reviews for "severance" by ling ma said it was a hilariously deadpan satire on the post-apocalypse — and maybe that was true in 2018 — but now that i've read it i can say i probably laughed Once and felt a bone-deep nihilistic dread Constantly. the bit about the protagonist's company gifting her a self-care kit of 2 N95 masks, a nutrient bar, and an expanded insurance plan in response to a worldwide pandemic isn't really funny post-2020, it's just realism.

#good novel i felt actually insane reading how many parts of the 2020 pandemic ling ma accidentally predicted #and then felt insane experiencing Everything Else #idk i just love works about corporate gothic and alienation and shame and isolation. and severance hit like every beat #also i think the way the protagonist's immigrant experience tied in with her behaviours and the plot was just really clever #that she is essentially saved by and doomed by her lack of home. her severance from society if you will. ba dum tss #i figured out i can check out books from my library through a phone app. and then stole all my friends' library card information. im balling #beepbeep.txt #literature

started playing frostpunk and. interesting how coal thumpers just create piles of coal and don't actually add it to your stockpile. so forcing all your workers to do overtime at the coal thumping factory, without anyone to gather it, very much does nothing. interesting. very interesting.
