Five live-action female superheroes most fans haven’t heard of... #2: Mega Mindy
Mega Mindy was a highly popular childrens tv show from Belgium, originally produced by Studio 100 in Dutch for the Ketnet channel, and subsequently dubbed for other European markets. Starting in 2006 the series ran to 56 regular television episodes over six seasons, plus various tv specials and several theatrically released movies. The franchise also span out into music albums, comicstrips, and a number of musical stage shows.
Free Souffriau plays the lead role of police officer Mieke Fonkel, whose grandpa is secretly a madcap inventor responsible for all manner of crime-fighting gadgetry. Chief amongst these is a chamber that can transform his granddaughter -- for a limited period only -- into the purple-clad superheroine known as Mega Mindy.
Following the well-worn superhero love triangle format, Mieke has a secret crush on her work colleague, the amiable but not very bright Toby (Louis Talpe), but Toby only has eyes for her alter ego, Mega Mindy.
In her Mega Mindy guise, Mieke is super strong and athletic, and thanks to her ingenious grandpa she has the ability to teleport between locations. Her powers don’t last forever, however, and at the conclusion of each adventure the control gauntlet of her costume beeps the countdown that heralds Mega Mindy’s reversion back to Mieke. Typically this happens just as Mega Mindy is about to finally kiss Toby, leaving the hapless romeo puckering up to thin-air as Mega Mindy teleports out of sight before the transformation occurs.
As befits a children's show there's plenty of comedy, and the villains are very much in the classic pantomime style. Nevertheless the show packs in the occasional exciting and dangerous situation to challenge its heroine, and Mega Mindy’s plans don’t always play out as expected.
