Are there any sources you would recommend for Danton, especially any good biographies?

The best Danton book I know of is Danton: le mythe et l’histoire (2016). It is however not a biography but a series of essays on different parts of Danton’s political career. Danton’s private life is not touched upon at all as far as I’m concerned.

When it comes to actual biographies, I do know of a ton that can be accessed for free via Internet Archive (Danton (1914) by Louis Madelin, Danton (1935) by Hermann Wendel, Danton (1978) by Normann Hampson, Danton (1987) by Frank Dwyer and Life of Danton (1906) by Augustus Henry). Most of them I have however only interacted with when gathering information for an ask about Danton’s second wife Louise Gély, and in this instance, none of them were particulary helpful, each repeating the same claims regarding Louise without providing any sources to back it up with. I don’t know if they are the same when talking about Danton’s public life though, it after all being a subject they all probably had a bigger interest in. Of those listed, I would mainly recommend Danton (1978) by Normann Hampson, if not because it at the very least cites footnotes. I found it to be helpful when studying the lead up to the dantonist purge (mainly when it came to the alleged meeting(s?) he and Robespierre had in the weeks predating it), and the historian Marisa Linton described as an ”excellent biography” in 2014.

There’s also Danton, Mémoire sur sa vie privée (1865) by Jean François Eugène Robinet, that among other things includes a memoir written by Danton’s two sons, and Danton — Fragment Historique by Danton’s former colleague Alexandre Rousselin. Both are of course bias in his favour, but they’re still primary accounts.

Finally, I also know of the recent double biography Danton et Robespierre: Le choc de la Révolution(2021) by Loris Chavanette. However, I haven’t read it and therefore can’t say if it’s any good.

Production is underway in the UK on Joy, a Netflix feature based on the true story of the world’s first in vitro fertilisation baby, starring Bill Nighy, James Norton and Thomasin McKenzie.

The film is directed by the UK’s Ben Taylor, who has previously directed episodes of Netflix’s Sex Education; with a script by Bafta-winning writer Jack Thorne, who co-created the story with his wife Rachel Mason.

Joy is produced by Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey of the UK’s Wildgaze; with executive producer Cameron McCracken for Pathe. The film is a UK production, operating under Equity.

Spanning from 1968 to 1978, the film will follow three trailblazers facing opposition from the church, state, media and medical establishment, in their pursuit of the world’s first ‘test tube baby’, Louise Joy Brown. The three figures are a young nurse, a visionary scientist and an innovative surgeon, played by McKenzie, Norton and Nighy respectively.

“I am a lifelong Jack Thorne fan, and it has been such a thrill to work with him and Rachel on my first feature film,” said Taylor. ”As the proud father to two boys only made possible by IVF, this is a story extremely close to my heart. It’s an honour to bring to life the journey of this heroic trio, whose world-changing work was only achieved in the face of unimaginable opposition. So according to the Oz Wiki, a very reliable source for all things Wicked, some new, or should I say old, cast members are rejoining the Wicked cast. Now I know what you’re thinking. “It’s a Wikipedia page, anyone can edit it,” but this site is actually very reliable. Now while I would be stoked if Stephanie J. Block were to return as Elphaba, and I would jump at the chance to see her live, I’m hoping praying that these casting announcements are false. (Read why below the cut-off.)

IT PISSES ME OFF! THAT’S WHY! Not a single one of these people are fresh-blooded (meaning they haven’t done the show in any capacity whatsoever.) There are so many amazing women who would excel in the roles of Elphaba and Glinda, but the producers only recycle old cast members. It is getting really annoying. Especially because if they keep doing this all the amazing women who can play these roles will age out! The last fresh blooded Elphaba on Broadway was Lindsay Mendez in 2013 and for Glinda, it was Jenni Barber in 2014. For the 2nd US tour, Jessica Vosk was the last fresh blooded Elphaba in 2016, so they’re good, but for Glinda’s their last fresh blooded Glinda was Carrie St. Louis in 2014. Meanwhile, the last fresh blooded Elphaba on the West End was Louise Dearman in 2012, although current Glinda, Sophie Evans, is a fresh blood, so props to the West End.

I’m just very annoyed because, as I previously stated, there are so many talented women who could do these roles. In fact, in order to help the producers, I’ll state most of my dream Elphaba’s and Glinda’s below...

Having just plowed through a bunch of old Danton biographies to learn more about Louise-Sebastienne, I’d thought I’d host a little vote regarding which of these sentences make you the most uncomfortable so that you can share my pain.
