Kingdom of the Double Wides
A short fiction story
Kennedy Havnarek Rensselaer, also known as Ken, Ken-Ren, or Ken Ken, sat in his favorite green lawn chair, situated on a grassy knoll that presided over his thirty acres. These acres were all that remained of what was once a thousand-acre parcel of forested, rolling hills fringed with rich farmland. Over the years, Ken’s grandfather and father had sold off small parcels to various developers.
Most of the former Havnarek Rensselaer lands had been cut up into small two or three acre- plots, although there was still some active farmland now owned by a struggling local dairy. But most of the lots were decorated with large, modern homes encircled by sprawling, flowerless lawns, all well-manicured and maintained, plots that belonged to city people who needed to escape urban claustrophobia or who used them for vacation rentals. Investments. Portfolios. Revenue streams. Ken did not like this absentee owner trend. Not at all. And his phone never seemed to stop ringing.
The local real estate agents were eager to make a big paycheck. They were relentless. But Ken refused to sell the remaining Havnarek Rensselaer land to these so-called developers, even those who made promises that they had the local people’s needs in mind. His exact words were always, “go piss off.” He disliked developers, and even the notion of “development.” For Ken, “development” meant short-term profits for the very few and the far away, people who did not care what happened after “development.”
For thirty years now he had seen the whole county taken over by weekenders, mostly city people, vacation rental owners, house flippers, and the occasional squatter making meth. There was little left for local folks, people he had grown up with, fought beside, even cared about. And never mind young families looking for their first home! Yes, it was home that he thought of, not investments, not developments, not opportunities. And home meant family. And local families had been priced out, or worse, shamed out. And all the real estate agents ever did was bemoan “lack of inventory” and “title search” issues.
Real estate leeches, that’s what Ken called them. Predators in an increasingly predatory world. There was no thought of community in the hearts of those who scoured the landscape for commissions. His land was not going into their pockets.

Ken himself lived in the old family farmhouse; an Italianate structure believed to have been built in 1843 by John Cornelius of Albany. But Ken had never liked its location, low down in the valley, adjacent to the once wild creek and the old road that had connected the farmland to the old rail lines. He preferred to preside over his land from the grassy knoll, where he kept his lawn chair.
On a Tuesday afternoon in early June, Ken sat in that lawn chair on that grassy knoll, casting his eyes across the land, part of him content, part of him unsettled. He missed his wife, who had passed away two years before from a nasty form of colon cancer. And he missed his three sons, one of whom had moved to Alaska to do welding on some big job. He took a deep breath and let his thoughts roam freely, grazing here and there and then moving on.
Overhead, a flock of Canadian geese honked their way towards Howard’s pond. What a sight, he thought. It was then that he came upon his grand idea.

The following day, Ken called his youngest son, Travis, with an offer.
“Trav,” he said into the cell phone that he hated so much, “I got an idea. Why don’t you and your girl, what’s her name? Candy?”
“No, it’s Sandy. Short for Alexandra,” Travis replied.
“Why don’t you and Sandy move here? Into the old farmhouse. There’s plenty of work here for you now.”
“I don’t know, Dad,” Travis said. “Sandy likes having her own place.”
“It would be your own place.”
“Well, where are you gonna live? You’re not dying, are you?”
“No, I’m not dying. Why you always gotta ask that?”
“Well then where are you gonna live?”
“Let me tell you about my plan.”

Ken’s plan was simple. It was cost-effective. It was, in his mind, brilliant. He would buy himself a double wide trailer home and park it up on the grassy knoll. Travis and Sandy could live in the farmhouse. The only issue now was getting the town to give him permission for a new well and a new septic system. There was only one hiccup: the town building inspector, a one Caleb Jones with whom Ken had had an ongoing feud centered on a flat bottom fishing boat kept at the reservoir and painted with the number 72.
Caleb Jones had laid claim to the boat, in error. But he never accepted his error and continued to tell people that Ken had painted that 72 on the wrong boat. The disagreement had never been settled, and now neither one of them used the neglected boat. It had remained chained up to a pine tree for almost two decades.
Ken sat on his grassy knoll, chewing over how he could get around Caleb, who was known to take personal grudges all the way to court. And that was when Ken had the most spectacular idea of all. But he needed to run it by someone he trusted, someone who would be honest and who wouldn’t blab it all over town.
He took the hated cell phone out if his shirt pocket and dialed his eldest son, Marshall, a lawyer in practice in Binghampton. Ken often found Marshall to be a little too buttoned up. Square, that’s the word that Ken had always applied to Marshall. He had that old Dutch hard-headedness. His world was black and white, whereas Ken’s was kaleidoscopic in comparison. But as a lawyer, he was the right man for the job.
“You want to do what where?” Marshall asked.
“I want to put up a few doublewides and make a little development up by the old lookout,” Ken said.
“Double wides?”
“Look, people here need housing. I got land. Got some money. Got thirty acres. Why not?”
“Caleb still giving you grief?” Marshall asked.
“Nah, I don’t really cross paths with him these days. I think he’s angling to run for town supervisor.”
“He’ll never win. He has too many enemies.”
“Yeah, you got that right. He’s got ‘em in spades.”
“So, what do you need?”
“A fool proof plan.”

Three years later, Ken presided over his foolproof plan from the grassy knoll where his own double wide home now sat. On the gentle slope below him, half a dozen double-wides cascaded down the gentle slope, each with its own patch of land for a parking spot, garden, fire pit, and summer terrace. Ken had also made sure to plant some beech and birch trees and elderberry bushes along the newly paved driveway that snaked up the hill.
Each afternoon, Ken would sit in his lawn chair, now situated on the porch of his double wide, and would gaze out across his land, his thoughts drifting cloud-like across the sky. The place was really beginning to take shape.
The plan, Ken’s plan, was beautiful in its simplicity. He had land. People needed homes. They didn’t need mansions or summer getaways or luxury digs. They needed homes, refuges from the increasingly complex and sour-tasting world. They needed to feel like part of something, like there was a real community there for them, one that cared and wasn’t just trying to ratchet money and blood out of them.
It’s not that Ken was trying to recreate past times, back when the towns and villages he knew so well flourished. He knew that they would never go back to those days. Nowadays, cheap air travel took vacationers to the Dominican Republic, where a dollar still went a long way. Nor did he believe that, somehow, cottage industry would return, or that big companies would again build factories. Those ships had long sailed. All he wanted was for local folks to live locally and to have an affordable community of their own. Not that Ken was some liberal-leaning do-gooder on a crusade for affordable housing. No. Ken was too practical a man for any of that kind of thinking. From his perfect perch on the grassy knoll, he was on the cusp of realizing a mythical community that had been living in his head for decades. It was something that he had often thought about at night before falling asleep: a community of like-minded folks who were not interested in one-upmanship or showboating, people who deserved and appreciated decent homes in a decent place surrounded by decent people.

On a sleepy Tuesday afternoon, after Ken had mowed the grassy knoll, he sat in his lawn chair and gazed out across the county highway, where a large McMansion presided over a once Jersey-filled pasture. The owners of the McMansion were seldom around. It seemed a shame to him that such a gorgeous property provided enjoyment to no one. And that was the moment that his foolproof plan evolved once again. He made a few phone calls.
“Roy, this is Ken,” he said into the cell phone.
“Hey there Ken-Ken, how’s that double-wide working out for you?” Roy asked.
“Yeah, good,” Ken said. “I wanted to run something by you. Now, we got those six homes set up, and that’s all going real good. So, what I’m thinking is that what we need here are a couple dozen more. Now, what can you tell me about kits?”
Roy was a businessman, and in general a good one. And he had known Ken since the old county fair days, when they competed against each other for the best hog. They both still had a thing for the county fair and for hogs, although county fairs had changed over the years. It was now all about fried food.
“I can tell you a whole lot. When do you wanna talk.”

For the next two years, all went well with Ken and with the residents of his growing community. The place was looking good, and Ken really liked how the cascade of doublewides reminded him of those pastel-colored marshmallows. And he loved hearing the voices of children playing and people laughing and music playing. It was, in his opinion, the best little community around.
And then one day, a young man with a handlebar moustache, ginger curls, and tight wool pants exited a Volvo that had slowly ascended the hedge-lined driveway. It was a sunny albeit brisk autumn afternoon.
Ken, dressed in his best camo and reading a copy of Caesar’s Commentaries on the Gallic War, had been sitting in his lawn chair, watching the Volvo and its occupant, wondering what on earth the mustached-man wanted. He did not look like the double-wide type.
“Are you Ken Rensselaer?” the young man asked.
“Who’s asking?” he replied.
“My name is Borthwick Kay,” the man said.
“Borthwick?”
“Yes, Borthwick.”
“What brings you out here, Borthwick?”
“I am interested in this community you have going on here.”
“In what way interested?”
“I am just curious to see what it’s all about. My cousin, Jay MacLeod, told me about a little community out here and well, I am curious.”
“Curious how?”
“I mean, it’s kind of a novel thing you’re doing. You’ve got these homes that people can buy or rent, and you’ve put in these amenities, like that above ground pool with the deck, which looks great by the way, and you’ve got the volleyball and badminton spot, the darts area, oh, and the target shooting area.”
“That’s for archery, not guns.”
“I see,” Borthwick said. “And you have a communal fire pit. And a bandshell. And it looks like a skating rink. What’s it all about?”
“All about? Does it have to be about something?”
The young man smiled and looked down at his feet, putting his hands in his pockets. “I mean, what is your reason for doing all of this?”
“Son, you look like you’re the type who talks about ‘quality of life’ and whatnot. We’re just out here, living quality lives. There’s no about. There’s just people, doing their things.”
The young man chuckled and touched his mustache to ensure it’s symmetry. “I mean, why did you build this development?”
Impatience was building a stairwell in Ken and was about to breach his voice box. “You say you’re Jay MacLeod’s cousin. What’d he tell you?
“He said you’re building your own kingdom of double wide trailer homes. I was curious.”
“Why the curiosity? You looking to buy one, or are you here to gawk at the working class?” With that, Ken made a sweeping motion towards the McMansion across the road, “You here to complain about the view? ‘Cause I don’t give a rat’s ass about the damn view.”
Borthwick took a step backward and let go of his mustache. “No, I am just curious as to why you would go to all this expense, and, well, work.”
“And you’re thinking, ‘for free.’ Am I right?”
“Well, yeah.”
“Listen, son. This is a community. A real, in the flesh, can smell each other kind of community. It’s not some virtual bullshit. What do you call it? A hive mind? It’s not some ‘development.’ It’s a community. We help each other. You wanna live here? We help you get the kit. We help you set it up. We help. Got that? It’s a community. We have our ‘quality’ of life, just like that McMansion over there has its ‘quality’ of life. The only difference is that we don’t call the county authorities and complain that someone is ‘spoiling’ our view. We actually live here. There are families here. The school bus stops right down there. We got ten kids getting on that bus every day. It’s a community. Not a luxury getaway. Not a commune. A community.”
“If I did want to live here, what would the process be?”
“Process? Son, you gotta change your vocabulary. You don’t even see it.”

On a rainy Tuesday the following April, Ken was making coffee and staring out the kitchen window of his double wide, watching two squirrels battling over territory. He had a few minor things on his mind, like the gulley that had formed alongside the driveway as it joined the road below, and the hedges that had been partially uprooted by an errant plow truck. Nothing major. Typical post-winter issues that everyone had to deal with. But as he watched the squirrels battle, something began to bother him. He just didn’t quite know what.
He poured himself a cup of coffee and sat down at the breakfast nook, looking at the mail from the day before. Time to write some checks, he thought. He stood up, prepared to get his checkbook, when his cell phone rang. He didn’t recognize the number.
“Hello?” he asked into the phone.
“Hello. Is this Ken Rensselaer?” a voice asked.
“Yes, who’s this?”
“Oh, hello, this is Pete Meeks from the Times Herald. I’d like to know if I could ask you a few questions about yesterday’s New York Time’s article.”
“What article?”
“The article about your community of the double wides.”
“What article?”
“Oh, you didn’t know?”
“No, I didn’t.”
It did not take long for Ken to find out just how many people had read the New York Times article, nor what their opinions of him were. In fact, the whole double wide community was now the subject of much ink and speculation.

“A Community of Separatists”
“The Rich Need Not Apply”
Ken’s community had been ‘outed’ in an unfair and uninvited way. It was hurtful to see how his words had been twisted by some stranger wearing tight pants. And online, there were the slings and arrows of people he had never met, people who had never asked a question but who seemed to have all of the answers. And now people he had known for years seemed to want him to fail. And then there were accusations about the children and whether or not they were in danger. He set his jaw tight, determined to rise above the fray.

Ken did manage to find and read the New York Times article, which wasn’t really an article about him. It was about the Borthwick mustache man and his rural roots and how he was effecting “change” in his childhood stomping ground. It made Borthwick sound like some wise creature, some seer of future things, some mover and shaker with a non-profit behind him. But all that Borthwick had really done was inflame the already tense situation between local folks going about their day and the demanding weekenders who smirked at the lack of matcha lattes and vegan options at the local eateries, many of which struggled to stay afloat.
Grouchy and antagonistic, that was what Borthwick had called him. “The last stand of a colonial land legacy” was what Borthwick wrote about the double wides, dubbing them “the Kingdom of the Double Wides” and calling Ken their king.
“Colonial lands?” Ken grumbled to himself. He wanted to react, but he knew how that would go down. There was no way to win against Borthwick and the Times. It would be a drain circling endeavor, the sort of demise that Ken had witnessed more than once since the advent of so-called “social media.” He wasn’t going to give in to the monster.

After a few months, the furor died down, mostly. But Ken did not drop his guard, nor did the double wide community. No. That sour tasting modern life, the one that existed only in digital form in those handheld devices called smart phones, became all the more unpalatable. He knew that, once released into the “digital universe,” stories never really died down. They just fell out of rotation. Until someone needed ad revenue. Someone like the mustached Borthwick. It was only a matter of time, and Ken wasn’t going to be taken by surprise again.
He called Marshall, who offered to send a cease-and-desist letter to Borthwick. But Ken felt that would only re-invigorate the story and let Borthwick play the victim.
“I can’t hit back at the behemoth that is the New York Times. I need something better,” he said to Marshall.
“Better? In what way better?”
“The right way.”
“The right way?”
Yes, the right way.”

Ken, despite his flannel shirt and pistol permit, was a student of history, specifically military history. He had read actual books. And his right-way plan was a three-pronged approach that included a local historian, a travel writer, and a poet.
Marshall was confused.
“So, I get the travel writer. But the poet?”
“Never underestimate the power of words. What’s it they call it? Triggers?”
“I guess so, but how’s this gonna help anything?”
“Borthwick had already written his story in his head and then he found me and made me out to be some sort of ridge-runner bumpkin huckle-buck who can’t read and write.”
“Well, he didn’t exactly say that, but …”
“He didn’t have to say it. He had all his words lined up like empties at a shooting range. Ping! Ping! Ping! He wasn’t looking to learn a damn thing or find, what was it? Oh yeah, ‘better understanding.’ It was an eye poke. He was looking to make himself into something important. Relevant is the word they use. He has to stay ‘relevant.’”
“Perhaps, but, still. I don’t get the poet part.”
“You will.”

A secret that Ken had kept all through school was that he loved epic poetry, especially the Iliad and the Odyssey. It was his mother, a high school Latin teacher, who had brought those stories to life, although she had left out some of the more graphic details. But he had loved the idea of singing the histories of places. And he loved classic country music with its great story telling and pathos. He wasn’t too fond of the current country cross over pop and their fluffy stories.
“Pathos,” Ken said to the poet, “is what I am looking for. Pathos. In hexameter.”
“Borthwick Kay,” Ken said to the local historian, “has his own colonial roots. His mother is a Vandergrift. They didn’t show up here last week as part of the tired and the poor. They used to feud with the Rensselaers over that one stretch of Krumkill. These lands go back to Dutch times. And these farmhouses, lots of them are pre-Civil War. And then you got all these Revolutionary War sites. This place is the history of America. And these doublewides and McMansions are a part of it.”
“There’s a lot to see besides McMansions and double-wides,” Ken told the travel writer. “It’s one of the most beautiful parts of the country. And a lot of us here keep it nice for tourists and sports enthusiasts.”
Ken had put things into play and was willing to wait and see what happened.

One Sunday, the bold headline on the pullout section of the Times Herald read “Feuds Old and New,” with photos of the Kingdom of the Double Wides, Ken dressed in camo, and Borthwick with his mustache slightly askew. A two-hundred-word epic poem, broken up into sections, dovetailed with the local historian’s recounting of local history and modern times.
“This is a community just as deserving of respect as any other,” Pete Meeks wrote. “But they have been met with derision, in fact digital shaming.”
“No one should shame us for the poverty foisted upon us by the circumstances of our times. We didn’t ask to have all our cottage industry yanked out from under us. Whose fault is that?” he quoted Ken as saying.
“Yes, my family also has colonial roots. And no disrespect, but these people eschew the modern world and resist the social changes that have to – and will - happen. They’re fighting a losing battle. I’m not saying that they’re wrong. I’m just saying that they can do better. My non-profit understands affordable housing and its challenges more than they ever will.”
Ken sat in his lawn chair, smiling to himself as he gazed out across his kingdom. He had had his say and did not care one whit what Borthwick or anyone else thought. He had realized his dream. The grassy knoll had never felt more like home than it did in that moment.
He closed his eyes and let the sun warm his face. The community was thriving, in fact growing, and the online attacks and name calling had, for the most part, died down. All the local villages had weighed in and had praised his defense of their existence. But he hadn’t done what he did in order to get praise from anyone. He did what he thought needed to be done.
A few bees buzzed around his head, and he waved them off. But they were persistent. He opened his eyes and watched them as they tried to descend into his open can of Saratoga cream soda. A glint of sun on metal caught his attention and he looked out towards the road to see a car turn onto the driveway. He recognized the car. It was Borthwick.
Ken stayed put, watching the Volvo navigate the roadway. “What the hell does he want now,” Ken mumbled to himself.
Borthwick parked next to Ken’s perch and slowly took himself out of the Volvo. He was wearing another pair of tight pants, these a shade of salmon pink. His mustache was gone and his curls were more wild.
“Hello,” a sunglass-bedecked Borthwick said as he approached Ken.
“I got nothing to say to you, so you can turn around and go back to your desk and write more bullshit about me.”
Borthwick looked down at his sandaled feet and shook his head.
“No, I’m not spoiling for a fight.”
“Then why are you here, with all of us poor folks and our inability to move forward in life?”
“Look, I should have been honest with you. And I should have been fair.”
“Yeah, well, you weren’t. And guess who had to deal with that. I’m not talking about me. I’m talking about all these people here. And their kids. I don’t know what you thought would happen after what you said about kids being unsafe here. You think kids are safe in housing projects? In houses with no heat? Living in some firetrap shack? You spent all of five minutes here. Five minutes.”
“I don’t blame you for being angry.”
“Angry? I passed angry a long time ago. You’re lucky I’m too old to jump out of this chair and clean your clock.”
Borthwick smiled, his head tilted to one side as he removed his sunglasses. “Yeah, I get that. Touche on the article in the Times Herald.”
“Yeah, well, it didn’t quite have what you call the ‘reach’ that the Times has.”
“I don’t want to have a war going on out here,” Borthwick said. “I came to offer an olive branch. I want to help.”
Ken waved a few more bees away from the cream soda. “Help how? By making fun of this community? Look, I don’t really care that someone in Brooklyn called this a redneck Valhalla. I really don’t. But to mock us like you did. To say that we deserve what has happened to us, to our livelihoods? No, I can’t shake hands with that.”
“I didn’t say you deserved the …”
“You certainly implied it. Colonial lands and all. And what about you? I know your mother and her family. Why didn’t you mention that? Hypocrisy.”
“You’re not wrong. And I am sorry about that. I should have said something. Should have thought it through.”
“What you want, anyway, Borthwick? A selfie?”
“A truce.”
“Truce? I said my piece. If you want to help, isn’t that what you said, that you know so much, so much more than we do, then help. Go and help someone.”
A breeze scented with freshly cut grass swirled around them and then moved on. Borthwick let out a heavy sigh.
“I misjudged you, and all of this,” Borthwick said as he looked around. “I’m sorry about that.”
“It’s a runaway train,” Ken said as he took a sip of cream soda, “all this judging and hating. You want to help? Fix that.”
A dog barked nearby, drawing their attention. A woman’s voice called out for the dog and a child laughed.
“Thanks for not clocking me,” Borthwick said.
“Well, I wasn’t going to.”
“Thanks,” Borthwick said. “I think we both learned something here.”
Ken smiled as he picked up the can of cream soda and took the last sip. “Yea we have. We certainly have.”
