So I see a lot of posts going around explaining common writing pitfalls and how to avoid them. And one of the tips I see a lot is regarding miscommunication as a plot device. And how if everything could be fixed if your character just talked to someone, then you need a better plot device. And while I think this is very true for people trying to publish their work professionally, I just want to shout something out to any of the fic writers that are feeling nervous about that tip.
I personally LOVE miscommunication as a plot device.
And you know why? Because it is SO relatable. Do you know how many situations I have let drag on for weeks, months, even YEARS just because I was avoiding a specific conversation? How many times I have landed myself in hot water because I said something just to end a conversation or avoid conflict? (none of which I am saying is good, just that it happens)
So if you want to write a story where EVERYTHING snowballs just because your main character didn’t want to ask another character for clarification and just assumed something-- PLEASE DO! I will eat it all up and bite my nails as I wonder just how long they will let it go on, knowing that I would be doing exactly the same in their shoes.
#fanfiction#fic tropes#seriously i just love this trope so much#partly because of how easily everything could be solved#i love it when all the conflict is created by the character themselves#because again#Relatable#so write whatever you want#someone out there wants to read it!
