i have been getting kind of interested in the idea of family abolition lately but i dont really know anything about it. i know its something that you’re pretty into so do you have any recommendations of things to read to start learning about it?
MY AGENDA YAAAY. ok ill list out the main couple of works that concern themselves with the abolition of the family - i've not read them through properly yet, but i'll try to include some choice excerpts for each:
friedrich engels - origin of the family, private property and the state, 1884
one of the first analyses of the changes of familial structures throughout society following economic developments, though not without its flaws in its anthropological terms. it details the mechanisms through which private property and thereby inheritance would become a driving force in creating what we recognize as the patriarchy today. less of a direct call for abolition than the next two but still very concerned with understanding and analysing the family as a tool through which capitalism reproduces itself.
"The original meaning of the word “family” (familia) is not that compound of sentimentality and domestic strife which forms the ideal of the present-day philistine; among the Romans it did not at first even refer to the married pair and their children, but only to the slaves. Famulus means domestic slave, and familia is the total number of slaves belonging to one man." (p. 31)
in general i'll always refer to marx or engels as the starting point for analysis of a lot of things, so you can also just take this as a blanket recommendation for their works. marxist feminism in general lays the foundation for family abolition, so i'd also recommend you read up on reproductive labour and other general feminist theory.
sophie lewis - abolish the family: a manifesto for care and liberation, 2022
a very comprehensive introduction to the concept of family abolition, with a lot of references to other authors and works to sink your teeth deeper into. i went to a talk about this book this summer with her as one of the speakers, so although i haven't read it yet, i can say that she presents the topic in a very engaging way. she stresses the intersectional nature of family abolition, discussing race and queerness and how these factors tie into family abolition and the tensions that can arise due to the family's role as a safety net and community.
If the family is a combined-and-uneven form of thriving, denied to some, while being a combined-and-uneven mechanism of violence, concentrating power in the hands of others, it is foolish to imagine that there is an interpellative strategy we could “safely” choose that would also be adequate to the magnitude of the problem that is the family. One option is to specify, when we talk about abolition of the family, that we mean the white, cisheteropatriarchal, nuclear, colonial family. This might feel safer, but might actually pose more dangers in its invitation to excuse or romanticize the political character of all nonwhite, mixed, gay, and/or indigenous homes, while neglecting most people’s family-abolitionist needs and excluding them from family abolitionist politics!
m.e. o'brien - family abolition: capitalism and the communizing of care, 2023
a general run-through of a. the violence enacted through and within the family, and how the idea of the family as a private household serves to reproduce capitalist society, b. the history of the family and its forms throughout capitalist society, and c. speculations on how an anti-capitalist revolution would necessitate a total rethinking and restructuring of how we approach care and the labour that is currently being done within the family rather than through communal efforts or larger systems.
"Family abolition is the horizon of collective love. We place vast hopes and desires in the family: for care, for sex, for consistency over time, for unconditional support, for material aid, for entertainment, for providing stability in daily life. At these, the family is generally a catastrophic failure and often an alienated disappointment. Our available alternatives are rarely any better. These positive human needs can only be fulfilled in the overcoming of the family and all the institutions of capitalist society. It is only through our collective emancipation that we can forge the relationships of love and care that we all yearn for, that we all desperately need." (p. 250)
m.e. o'brien has also co-authored a speculative fiction book together with eman abdelhadi called everything for everyone, which takes place in a near future after a revolution and the establishment of a commune in new york city. from the excerpts i've read it seems like a very interesting take on how communal care could look like in a modern society.

Grieving for Loss of Life: The Untold ME/CFS
In silent darkened rooms where millions lie, the world turns unaware of profound loss of life. Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is not just a disease it takes lives. While the stories that make the headlines often feature young, beautiful women whose promising lives are cut short, there is a vast ignored population of older sufferers whose lives have been equally devastated for much longer. Their stories too, deserve to be heard and acknowledged.
Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E.) is a long-term (chronic), fluctuating, neurological disease that causes symptoms affecting many body systems, more commonly the nervous and immune systems. M.E. affects an estimated 250,000 people in the UK, and around 17 million people worldwide.
Ruth’s Story: A Lifetime Stolen
Ruth will turn 60 next year. As a runner and cyclist with dreams of becoming a marine biologist, her life was irrevocably altered at the age of 14. After contracting glandular fever, her future became decades of debilitating illness. For 45 years, Ruth has endured the relentless grip of ME/CFS, a fluctuating disease not only widely misunderstood but often dismissed as psychosomatic. Her journey through the healthcare system is marked by disbelief, misdiagnosis, and neglect. From being prescribed antidepressants to treatments like Graded Exercise Therapy (GET) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) that worsened her condition, Ruth's story is the reality of systemic failure of a system that millions of ME/CFS sufferers face.
In 2018, at the age of 54 Ruth's condition deteriorated to the point where she could no longer sit up or eat, or to tolerate light or sound. Hospitalized, she received no meaningful treatment or advice. Sent home, her plight continued in isolation, a common reality for many with ME/CFS who are forced to endure appalling symptoms alone, away from a medical profession that often gaslights and stigmatizes them.
The Contrast: Young Faces in the Media
The media gravitates understandably towards stories of young, beautiful women whose lives are suddenly and tragically halted by ME/CFS. The striking before-and-after images of vibrant dancers, skiers, and fashionistas transformed into small, grey shapes confined to darkened rooms evoke immediate sympathy and empathy. These narratives are powerful and poignant, and shed light on the severe impact of the disease.
However, this focus leaves out a significant part of the ME/CFS community: the older women and men who have battled this illness for decades, whose stories are equally heartbreaking but never told. They were once young, vibrant people too, with dreams and aspirations that were crushed by ME/CFS. Their lives should not be diminished in value by age.
A Collective Grief
Ruth is not alone. Her story is typical of the unseen majority who retire to darkened rooms. Most sufferers learn to avoid seeking medical help, having learned first that there is none and second that disbelief and cruelty are often the response to their suffering. Decades of terrifying symptoms are borne in apparent silence. The energy required to protest or even ask for help is something many sufferers do not have. The advent of the internet has provided a valuable platform for shared experiences and hedge treatments. The voices of the voiceless are now there to be read.
The loss experienced by those with ME/CFS is colossal. Not only do they lose their health, but they also lose the ability to participate in life’s joys and important milestones. Birthdays, weddings, and funerals pass without their presence, replaced by their daily struggle for survival. Families grieve for the lost potential of their loved ones. Alongside the loss of life of the carers who devote time, energy and resources sometimes for decades.
Ruth lost the children she decided not to have as she was not well enough to look after them. She lost her career in marine biology as she was not well enough to go to university. She lost friends, a husband, and even a sister who eventually said, "I believe you believe you are ill." This is a profound loss of a life.
The Scandal
This is not just a medical issue; it is a profound scandal. Benefits are often withheld, and those with ME/CFS are left to navigate their debilitating condition with little to no support. Their poverty causes further physical suffering.
Dr. Nancy Klimas, a renowned expert in the field, says: “There’s evidence that ME/CFS patients experience a level of disability equal to that of patients with late-stage AIDS, patients undergoing chemotherapy, or patients with multiple sclerosis. The only difference: NO treatment for ME/CFS!” How much clearer could the need for recognition and action be made?
The Call for Justice
Forty-five years after Ruth became ill, and even after a global pandemic highlighted the long-term consequences of viral infections, the architects of neglectful policies are often unchallenged. Even when they wilfully ignore NICE guidelines. Meanwhile, lives continue to be lost in the shadows, as those affected by ME/CFS and now Long COVID endure their lives half-lived.
The parallels with other public health disasters are striking. Like the Horizon scandal, the contaminated blood scandal, and the Grenfell tragedy, the plight of ME/CFS sufferers is a humanitarian crisis that demands accountability.
Conclusion
As we grieve for the lifetimes lost to ME/CFS, action must be taken. It’s time to bring this tragedy into the light, to demand that the medical community, society, and policymakers address the suffering of millions. Only then can we begin to heal the profound wounds inflicted by decades of disbelief and neglect. The loss of life caused by ME/CFS is a tragedy that must no longer be ignored.

In 2010, K.Ramakrishnan College of Technology (KRCT) founded the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), which attained NBA accreditation in 2020, reaffirming its dedication to excellence. In 2023, the Department successfully underwent re-accreditation, reaffirming its sustained dedication to quality education. Further, the department offers a wide range of courses and equipped with research laboratories. Also, the department provides students with a holistic learning experience, preparing them to excel in the dynamic field of electronics and communication.

Audits
Firstly, Key deliverable audit conducted by CC coordinator of Allied courses Domain on 18.01.2023. Also, CDP, CAP and CAM were verified and approved by CC Coordinator.
At the same time, Key deliverable audit conducted by CC coordinator of Applied Electronics Domain on 18.01.2023.CDP, CAP and CAM were verified and approved by CC Coordinator.
Further, the key deliverable audit for II Year subjects was conducted by the Course Committee Coordinator.
For the Communication Domain, Dr. S. Suganthi, Professor of ECE, oversaw the audit for the subject "ETW."
In the Applied Electronics Domain, Dr. M. Kavitha, Professor of ECE, led the audit for the subjects "Control Systems" and "Analog Circuits."
Campus Activities
Alumni Interaction with final year placed students by Mr.Lakshman raj of (2012-2016) batch on 24.01.2023. The event was successfully organized and conducted by Ms.S.Geerthana AP/ECE /Alumni coordinator.
Students of ECE participated and exhibited their talents in 74th Republic Day parade on 26.01.2023 organized by KRGI.
Faculty members and students of the ECE department came together to plant saplings in observance of National Science Day.
A seminar and hands-on practice session on PCB design and fabrication were conducted for the II-year ECE A section students.
Insightful Talks at Electronics and Communication Engineering Department
Mr. S. Amarnath and Mr. S. Bharath from the III Year shared the insights they gained during the Ideation Camp of TNSI-2023, organized at University College of Engineering, BIT Campus.
On February 23, 2023, Mr. V. Ramkumar, Assistant Professor in the Department of ECE, delivered a value talk on Project Deliberation to the students of III/ECE.
An Invited Talk on "Career Opportunities in Multi-National Companies" was delivered by Mr. G. Dinesh, an Automation Test Engineer at Wipro Technologies, Chennai. Mr. Dinesh, an alumnus from the 2013-2017 batch, shared insights and experiences regarding career paths and opportunities in multinational companies.
Participations/Innovations
Students from III/ECE and II/ECE visited Kerala Electrical and Allied Engineering Co.Ltd. on both March 4, 2023, and March 11, 2023. During these visits, students acquired valuable knowledge on general engineering concepts, including the intricacies of coil winding in transformers.
Also, on March 21, 2023, students of III ECE presented their idea pitch for Olimayam 2.0 KIT.
Furthermore, students of ECE showcased their innovation at the CSA conference.
In addition, students of ECE attended a Boot Camp at KIOT organized by Olimayam 2.0.
Seminars
Additionally, The Department of ECE, Institution of Engineers, in collaboration with the NDLI club at KRCT, organized a seminar on "Structural Integrity Evaluation using Electrical Strain Gauge Sensor." The event was presided over by Dr.N.Raju, Additional General Manager at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (Public Sector).
Moreover, The Institute of Engineers Student Chapter, in collaboration with KRCT NDLI Club and the National Digital Library of India Club, organized a seminar on "Introduction to System C and Its Career Opportunities in the Semiconductor Industry" on March 31, 2023.
Faculty Success
Above all, Dr.V.Ramkumar, Assistant Professor in the Department of ECE, successfully defended his thesis and completed his Ph.D. viva voce examination.
