7 Tips to Succeed at An MBA Career Conference (like NSHMBA)
With hundreds of top employers in one place, an MBA Career Conference can be a great way to find a job as an MBA student. In this post, I will share the seven things that I wish I had known before I went to the great NSHMBA career conference in Philadelphia this semester. Before I get to the tips, I will also give some background on Nashik MBA college career conferences in general.
What is an MBA Career Conference?
MBA career conferences started several decades ago as a way for companies to recruit top MBA candidates from various backgrounds. National Society of Hispanic MBA (NSHMBA) and National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) began as platforms to recruit candidates from Latin America and Africa. Today, these two conferences are the largest (think of hundreds of employers and more than five thousand jobseekers) and allow candidates from all ethnic backgrounds to participate. There are many other career conferences for MBA students that are smaller but more focused on inviting only candidates with different backgrounds. For example, there is an MBA Veterans Conference for those who have served in the US Military, the Reaching Out Conference for the LGBTQ Community, and Women's MBA Conference. Although these conferences may be more selective (requiring proof that you are connected to the LGBTQ community or have served in the military, etc.), the basic idea is the same: a number of employers are setting up stalls in a large hall where they continue their computer work and interview for internships and full-time jobs. The following tips should help you make the most of an MBA Career Conference.
Tip # 1: Make sure that attending an MBA conference is right for you. Before buying a flight ticket and reserving hotel rooms for a conference, make sure it makes sense to attend an MBA conference. Here are a few things to keep in mind. 1) Are your target companies employed at the conference? At almost all conferences, you can view a list of participating companies before deciding to attend. 2) What is the recruitment on campus? Most of the top 15 MBA college in Nashik programs (such as Michigan, Kellogg, and Stanford etc.) have such strong recruiting on campus that there is no need to invest time and money in an MBA career conference. Similarly, the A.C. Nielsen Center in Wisconsin has enough recruiting on campus that it makes no sense to send people to conferences, especially in the first year. 3) If you focus on marketing, finance, HR or supply chain, these conferences will be particularly relevant.
Tip # 2: Research and apply long before you arrive. Make sure that you know each company that you are interested in, 1) the locations of the different offices, 2) the type of products offered, and 3) why you prefer this company to other companies in the industry. Ideally, try talking to alumni or others currently working in this company. The names dropped shows that you are well connected and much more serious about the position than other candidates. In addition, in many companies, you can apply online several weeks before the start of the conference. Make sure you apply early, as many interview spots are already filled before the start of the conference!
Tip # 3: Visit your top companies as soon as the conference starts. When the conference is open, go to the company that you know 1) that interviews you for a role that interests you, and 2) that you can not access through your alumni network. Time is important as many companies fill out all their interview slots on the first day, sometimes within the first three hours of the conference. You do not want to be the person who first visited a less important company, only to find that your favorite company has already filled in their interview spots and cannot consider you.
Tip # 4: Keep your elevator pitch to less than 30 seconds. No one has time to hear a 1-minute elevator pitch: try 15-30 seconds. Basically, you just say 1) name 2) MBA student in 1st or 2nd year 3) a relevant fact (either past internship, work experience or personal connection to the company) and 4) the role you are looking for. For example, one could say, "I'm Stephen Griffiths, a second year at the University of Wisconsin, I recently completed an internship at Procter & Gamble and am interested in a full-time Consumer Insights role in your business."
Tip # 5: Focus on networking, not just interviews. Although interviews are important, do not stop them. Even if a company fills its interview slots, try hiring the HR recruiting manager or someone who works in your role. Share information, make sure they remember you and then link to LinkedIn. As other jobs open up in the future, these contacts are invaluable in giving your CV to decision makers. I got an interview with the head of my role, just following an HR contact career conference - I'm glad I did not give up just because they did not interview for my position at the time! MBA college Nashik
Tip # 6: Go to information sessions, they are golden networking opportunities. In addition to standing in line and with representatives at each booth, some companies will hold a one-hour briefing during the conference. These sessions share important company information that you should know for future interviews. Not only will you learn more about the company when attending an informational event, but you will also have the opportunity to network and have a good time after the information session. As an added bonus, ask smart questions during the info session and you'll be amazed at how recruiters will remember you. The amount of face time you get at these info sessions is much better than hitting a recruiter for 30 seconds at one of the career levels.
Tip # 7: Do not give up if you are rejected at first. Sometimes you have to visit a stall several times to get the right answer. A friend was turned down online when he applied, but then he went to the booth and got the first interview. I went to several booths where I was initially released slightly. I came back a few hours later and talked to another person who appreciated my background and was willing to link to LinkedIn and tell me how best to promote the company.
